China Imposes Export Bans on 8 Taiwanese Military-Linked Firms

China Imposes Export Bans on 8 Taiwanese Military-Linked Firms

Taipei, Jul 9 (AP) China has implemented export controls on eight enterprises connected to Taiwan's military as the self-governed island launches its annual military exercises.

The Ministry of Commerce of China has placed eight Taiwan-based organizations, which include companies involved in aerospace and shipbuilding, on an export control list due to concerns over national and regional security.

The banned entities include Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC), a defense supplier; drone manufacturer Jingwei Aerospace Technology Co; and Taiwan's largest shipbuilding company, CSBC Corporation.

The newly enforced regulations, effective immediately, ban the export of "dual-use items" to these entities, referring to products that can be utilized for both civilian and military applications.

This move coincides with the commencement of Taiwan's annual Han Kuang military exercises, designed to simulate defenses against a potential Chinese invasion. This year's drills are expected to be the most extensive and longest to date, spanning approximately ten days—twice as long as last year's exercises.

China views Taiwan as a part of its territory and has not ruled out the use of force for annexation. Beijing has labeled Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te as a separatist and refuses dialogue with him.

Chen Binhua, a spokesperson for Beijing's Taiwan Affairs Office, stated that the export controls are essential for safeguarding China's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

“It is also a solemn warning to the Taiwan independence' separatist forces,” said spokesperson Chen Binhua.

He added, "Taiwan independence is a treacherous path. Enterprises, organizations, and individuals who act as agents for the separatist forces promoting Taiwan independence and contribute to national division will be strictly punished according to law.”

The United States, like most nations, does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country but is legally bound to provide the island with the means for self-defense. (AP)
