Childhood friends, separated during India-Pakistan partition, reunite | Watch

The India-Pakistan partition and the subsequent wars have left several scars on the families that were torn apart by the man-made boundaries, and displaced from their homes. But a moment of healing emerged recently, when two childhood friends separated by the border reunited in the United States.

A touching video of the moment the two met, after years of separation, has gone viral on social media.

32-year-old Megan Kothari recorded the reunion of her grandfather Suresh Kothari with his childhood friend, AG Shakir, that took place in October 2023.

Both the friends grew up together in Gujarat before they were separated in 1947 when they were 12.

The video, shared on Instagram, was captioned, ''When his friend reached Pakistan in 1947, he wrote to my grandfather that he had reached and shared his address in Rawalpindi (which to this day my grandfather has memorized). They tried to write to each other over the years, but the tensions between the two countries eventually made it impossible.”

The video showed the two friends shaking hands before sharing a warm embrace and spending the evening together.

''The love and respect they still held for each other, despite the geographical and political barriers that had separated them, is profound. It serves as a powerful reminder that the power of human connection cannot be extinguished by any government or border,” the Kothari further read.
