Child Found Alive in Suitcase on New Zealand Bus: Woman Arrested

Wellington, Aug 4 (AP) — Authorities in New Zealand have taken a woman into custody on charges of child neglect after an alarming discovery was made on a bus this past Sunday. A two-year-old girl was found alive inside a suitcase stowed in the luggage compartment, officials report. Detective Inspector Simon Harrison has stated that a bus driver became aware of movement within the luggage during a scheduled stop in Kaiwaka, north of Auckland. This occurred after a passenger requested access to the luggage area. Upon opening the suitcase, the driver found the young child, who appeared to be extremely hot but otherwise physically unharmed. Details regarding the duration of time the child spent in the luggage compartment or the bus route are not being disclosed. The child was subsequently taken to a hospital, where she remained on Sunday night. The woman facing charges of child ill-treatment or neglect is expected to appear in court on Monday; her identity has not been released by authorities. InterCity, the bus company involved, has confirmed the incident took place on one of its services. InterCity allows children under the age of three to travel free when accompanied on an adult’s lap.
