Canada PM reacts to Indian family freezing to death near border with US

Following the tragic case of an Indian family freezing to death near the US-Canada border, Canadian Prime Minister reacted to the news.

Justin Trudeau called the deaths 'mind-blowing' and 'tragic'. He called the family of 4 a victim of human traffickers. Trudeau slammed smugglers who take advantage of 'people's desire to build a better life'. He said that Canada and America are working closely together to stop human trafficking. Trudeau also urged people to not cross the border illegally.

A day earlier, the Manitoba Royal Canadian Mounted Police had said that four bodies - including two adults, a teenager, and an infant - were found near the border with the US. The family died due to exposure to extreme cold. They are believed to have been a part of a group trying to illicitly cross the border into America.

Other members of the group were apprehended by US authorities after crossing over. 47-year-old Steve Shand of Florida was also arrested in connection with the case.

The Indian government had directed diplomats in the US and Canada to work with local authorities with regard to the tragedy.
