Beijing's population falls for the first time since 2003; here's why

Chinese capital Beijing's population fell for the first time in almost two decades, the new population figures have revealed.

As per official data, there were more deaths than births in the Chinese capital last year. This is the first time since 2003 that the population of Beijing has declined.

The decline in the population is reportedly attributed to more deaths than births along with the high cost of living and education as well as the legacy of the one-child policy.

China’s Communist party government is reportedly trying to reverse the trend and stave off the economic impacts of an ageing population.
