Anutin Charnvirakul Elected Thai PM Following Key Vote

Anutin Charnvirakul Elected Thai PM Following Key Vote

Bangkok, Sep 5 (AP) Anutin Charnvirakul, a seasoned figure in Thai politics, secured the role of prime minister after a pivotal parliamentary vote on Friday. This development was broadcast live on television through an unofficial tally.

Anutin, who leads the Bhumjaithai party, managed to gather over 247 votes, surpassing the needed majority from the House of Representatives, which currently has 492 active members. The official certification of his total is pending upon the conclusion of the voting process. Following formal appointment by King Maha Vajiralongkorn, Anutin and his government are anticipated to assume office in the coming days.

Anutin steps into the position following the dismissal of Paetongtarn Shinawatra. She was removed from her role as prime minister by court order last week, following her conviction for ethics violations linked to a politically sensitive phone conversation with Cambodia's Senate President, Hun Sen.

Previously, Anutin served within Paetongtarn's Cabinet. However, he resigned from his role and withdrew his party from her coalition after the leaked phone call incited public outrage. (AP) RD RD
