Japan's Former Emperor Akihito Hospitalized for Heart Treatment

Tokyo, Jul 14 (AP) Japan's former Emperor Akihito, aged 91, was hospitalized on Monday as doctors worked to adjust his heart medication, according to palace officials.

Diagnosed in May with myocardial ischemia, a condition marked by reduced blood flow from the coronary arteries to the heart muscle, Akihito has been on medication to enhance blood flow.

His treatment plan has also included avoiding excessive physical exertion and reducing liquid intake.

Akihito stepped down from the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, passing the title to his son, Emperor Naruhito. He now bears the title of Emperor Emeritus.

After two months of treatment, there has been minimal improvement in Akihito's condition, prompting doctors to initiate an additional therapy to ease strain on his heart, as stated by the Imperial Household Agency.

Monday's hospitalization aimed to ascertain the correct dosage of a new medication while minimizing potential side effects. His heart function will be closely monitored through electrocardiograms and other examinations, according to the IHA.

It is noteworthy that Akihito underwent coronary artery bypass surgery in 2012, and three years ago, he was diagnosed with right heart failure due to tricuspid valve insufficiency.

Witnesses observed Akihito sitting in the back seat of a palace car, wearing a white surgical mask and accompanied by his wife, Empress Emerita Michiko, as he was transported to the hospital.

Palace officials have not disclosed the expected duration of Akihito's hospital stay. (AP)
