Devastating Earthquake in Eastern Afghanistan Kills 610

Kabul, Sep 1 (AP) An earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of at least 610 individuals and has left 1,300 others injured. The information was provided by a spokesperson from the Taliban administration on Monday.

The earthquake, measuring 6.0 on the Richter scale, struck late Sunday, affecting areas in the Kunar province near the city of Jalalabad located in the neighboring Nangarhar province. The quake devastated numerous villages and caused significant structural damage.

The tremor occurred at 11:47 pm and had a depth of only 8 kilometers. It's known that shallower earthquakes tend to cause more widespread destruction.

Abdul Matin Qani, the spokesperson for the Interior Ministry, confirmed the casualty numbers to the Associated Press, stating that the late-night earthquake resulted in 610 fatalities and 1,300 injuries in Kunar. Many homes were obliterated.

In Nangarhar, a smaller quake impact led to a dozen deaths and hundreds of injuries, according to Qani. (AP) GRS GRS
