Both Congress and NCP, which are allies under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in Gujarat, had extended their support to the opposition presidential candidate Yashwant Sinha.

During the presidential polls on Monday, Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) MLAs went against the party line to vote in favour of Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) nominee Droupadi Murmu.
From NCP, Kandhal Jadeja, the sole MLA of the party in the Gujarat Assembly and Jharkhand MLA Kamlesh Singh, voted for Murmu.

Congress&rsquo; Mohammed Moquim, an MLA from Odisha, said voting for Murmu was his "personal decision". "I am a Congress MLA, but I have voted for NDA's presidential candidate. It is my personal decision as I have listened to my heart, which guided me to do something for the soil," he was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. In addition, Haryana Congress MLA Kuldeep Bishnoi, who also cross-voted in the Rajya Sabha polls held last month, indicated that he had voted for Murmu. &ldquo;Like in Rajya Sabha, I have cast my vote in this election too as per my conscience.&rdquo;
Both Congress and NCP, which are allies under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) in Gujarat, had extended their support to the opposition presidential candidate <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/president-election-aap-reveals-whom-it-will-vote-for-droupadi-murmu-vs-yashwant-sinha-1657960006066">Yashwant Sinha</a>.

If elected, Murmu will become the first person from a tribal community and the second woman to hold the country&rsquo;s top constitutional post.

Yashwant Sinha&rsquo;s political career has come full circle, from being a fierce critic of the Congress party and the Left while being in the BJP for over two decades to being a presidential candidate with the support of those very parties.

Yashwant Sinha, the bureaucrat-turned-politician, has been named as the joint Opposition candidate for the President's post that goes to the polls on July 18.
While Sinha's candidature may have united the Opposition, the balance is tilting towards National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) Droupadi Murmu, especially in the backdrop of the recent political developments in Maharashtra.
The Opposition seems to bank on Sinha's 'veteranism' as an asset against the NDA nominee as it attempts to mount an ideological contest against the BJP.
Early life
Born in Patna on November 6, 1937, Sinha was the ninth of 11 siblings. At the age of 23, he joined the Bihar cadre of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). During his 24-year-long stint in Administrative Services, he held multiple posts in the Finance and Commerce Departments. He was First Secretary (Commercial) in the Indian Embassy in Bonn, Germany in the early 1970s.&nbsp;
Political journey
In 1984, Sinha quit his service and joined active politics as a Janata Party member. Two years later, he was appointed the party's all-India general secretary and was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1988. In 1989, Sinha co-founded the Janata Dal and took charge as the party&rsquo;s general secretary. He later joined the BJP and held important portfolios in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government but finance was known to be his forte.&nbsp;
In 2015, the senior politician received Officier de la Legion d'Honneur, the French government's highest civilian award.
An ardent critic of Narendra Modi and his government's policies, Sinha quit the BJP on April 21, 2018.&nbsp;
In 2021, he joined the Trinamool Congress as its vice president and quit last month to contest the presidential election.
Legacy as FM
Sinha was known as the &lsquo;rollback finance minister&rsquo; for rolling back fuel price hikes. His 1998-99 Union Budget was the first to have been presented in the morning, breaking the colonial-era tradition of presenting Union Budgets in the evenings. He is also credited with expanding the highway network across the country and undertaking the Golden Quadrilateral project - the largest highway project in India and the fifth-longest in the world. He made this possible by increasing the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) funds through a petroleum cess. He also de-regularised the petroleum industry.
No love lost between Sinha &amp; BJP
In 2018, Sinha quit the saffron party alleging that the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre was undermining democratic institutions and declared that he would be severing all ties with the BJP and announced his retirement from active politics.
Since then Sinha has been a vocal critic of the Modi government and its policies such as the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) in the years to follow, &nbsp;Sinha launched a 3,000 km Gandhi Peace March demanding the withdrawal of the CAA. Along with fellow BJP critics &ndash; former Union minister Arun Shourie and Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan &ndash; Sinha filed a joint petition in the Supreme Court seeking a review of its clean chit to the Modi government in the Rafale case. The apex court, however, dismissed all the review petitions.
Sinha&rsquo;s political career has come full circle, from being a fierce critic of the Congress party and the Left while being in the BJP for over two decades to being a presidential candidate with the support of those very parties.

Presidential Polls 2022: Droupadi Murmu leading after first round of counting

NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu is leading after the first round of votes were counted in the 2022 presidential polls on Thursday. Of the total 748 votes cast by the MPs, Murmu clinched 540 while Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha got 208. 

If elected, Murmu, the former governor of Jharkhand, will be the first tribal woman to be the President of India, and the second woman to occupy the top constitutional post after Pratibha Patil.&nbsp;

NDA presidential candidate Droupadi Murmu is leading after the first round of votes were counted. Of the total 748 votes cast by MPs, Murmu received 540, while joint Opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha bagged 208 votes.
Going by the support extended by various regional parties, Murmu has a clear edge over Sinha in this election. If elected, Murmu will become the first tribal woman to occupy the top constitutional post in the country.
Voting for the Presidential polls concluded on Monday with over 99 per cent of 4,796 eligible electors.

With the Presidential election kicking off on 18 July, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first to cast his vote.

One of the unique features of the election is a specially-designed pen meant to maintain the sanctity of the voting process. Voters in the Presidential poll will get the pens at the time of voting. These pens have violet-coloured ink to mark ballot papers. If a ballot paper is marked with any other pen, then it will be rejected under Rule 31(1)(d) of the Presidential and Vice Presidential Election Rules, 1974.
The logic behind the special pens is to make sure that the ballot papers look similar, and usage of a particular pen or ink does not reveal who the voter is. This will maintain the secrecy of voting as parties are not supposed to force their legislators to vote for a particular candidate in the Presidential election.

Former union minister Yashwant Sinha filed his nomination on Monday as the common opposition candidate against NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu for the July 18 presidential election, a contest described by his supporters as a “battle of ideologies”.
The 84-year-old, accompanied by his wife Nilima and flanked by leaders of at least 15 opposition parties including Rahul Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, Akhilesh Yadav, Farooq Abdullah and K T Rama Rao, submitted four sets of nomination papers to Rajya Sabha Secretary General P C Mody, who is the returning officer for the 16th presidential election.
The first set of nomination papers had Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge as proposers, while the second set had Trinamool Congress leader Sudeep Bandyopadhyay as a proposer.
The other two sets had DMK supremo Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav as proposers.
Each set of nomination papers was signed by 60 proposers and 60 seconders.
Sinha paid Rs 15,000 in cash as a security deposit for the presidential election.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao announced his support to Sinha hours before he filed the nomination. Rao's son and senior minister K T Rama Rao led a delegation of party leaders to be by Sinha’s side in Parliament.
There was no representative from the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), which had endorsed Sinha’s candidature but was mulling backing Murmu, a tribal leader belonging to the Santhal community.
Leaders of the Shiv Sena too were not present as they were busy with the political crisis in the party's home turf Maharashtra.
After filing the nomination papers, Sinha and opposition leaders offered floral tributes at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and B R Ambedkar on Parliament premises.
Addressing the media later, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi said all opposition parties were united in supporting Sinha’s candidature for the top Constitutional post.
“Of course, we support the individual, but the real fight is between two ideologies. One is the ideology of RSS, that of anger, hatred, and the other of compassion of all the opposition parties who are standing together,” Gandhi said.
Trinamool Congress leader Saugata Roy described Sinha as the best candidate to uphold the values enshrined in the Constitution.
“It is not a fight between two individuals only, it is a fight between two ideologies - between communalism and secularism, and authoritarianism versus democracy. I think under the circumstances, Yashwant Sinha is the best candidate,” Roy said while noting that he is a former IAS officer and a former union minister of Finance and External Affairs.
“On a person-to-person basis, Sinha is far better. All opposition parties are fully supporting him. The Congress, DMK, socialist parties and Left parties are supporting him. I think it is a rainbow-coloured coalition of best values,” the TMC leader said.
Sinha is likely to launch his campaign on Tuesday from Kerala followed by visits to Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Gujarat.
Top opposition leaders including Pawar, Gandhi, Kharge, Jairam Ramesh, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, TMC's Abhishek Banerjee and Saugata Roy, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, DMK's Tiruchi Siva and A Raja, former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah, CPI-M's Sitaram Yechury and CPI's D Raja were also present.
Rashtriya Lok Dal's Jayant Chaudhary, Rashtriya Janata Dal's Misa Bharti, Revolutionary Socialist Party's N K Premchandran and Indian Union Muslim League's Mohammed Bashir and NCP's Praful Patel were among the leaders who accompanied Sinha.

Yashwant Sinha, the common opposition candidate for the presidential election, on Monday said he would reach out to his former colleagues in the BJP seeking their support.
Addressing a press conference here, Sinha described the candidature of his rival NDA nominee Droupadi Murmu, a tribal, as part of "politics of symbolism" and insisted that he would contest the poll on the track record of the Modi government with regard to the welfare of backward communities.
Sinha, who filed his nomination for the July 18 election, hit out at the BJP saying that the saffron party under Prime Minister Narendra Modi lacked internal democracy.
"The BJP I was part of had internal democracy, the current BJP lacks internal democracy,&rdquo; he said.

Sinha served as finance minister and external affairs minister in the government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He had resigned from the BJP in 2018 and joined the Trinamool Congress in 2021. He quit the Trinamool Congress before his candidature was announced on June 21.
Sinha said he had reached out to Prime Minister Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh for support.
The veteran leader questioned the track record of the Modi government with regard to the welfare of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes.
"The current President also belongs to a particular community. Does it mean that the community has benefited," Sinha asked.
Sinha said the presidential election was a battle between the ideology of absolute power and that of freedom.
