Yamuna floodwater caused massive traffic jams in several key stretches of the national capital on Thursday, bringing vehicular movement to a crawl at multiple points, including Kashmere Gate, Ring Road, Outer Ring Road and the Kalindi Kunj area.
The sudden inundation disrupted morning rush-hour traffic, leaving commuters stuck for long hours.
Several people took to social media and reported bumper-to-bumper traffic, saying that even short distances like two kilometres were taking hours to cover. Many said they had to leave their vehicles at home and shift to Delhi Metro to reach offices on time.
Traffic police said heavy congestion was reported along stretches near the Yamuna river, with several points submerged.
"Traffic jams were witnessed at Kashmere Gate, along the Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, and around Kalindi Kunj where floodwater accumulated on carriageways. Diversions had to be made to regulate movement," an official said.
To manage the situation, the Delhi Traffic Police issued an advisory for commuters, specifically urging those travelling from Chandgi Ram Akhara towards Rajghat to use alternate routes.
According to the advisory, vehicles have been asked to move through Signature Bridge, then take Pusta Road and Raja Ram Kohli Marg before proceeding towards Rajghat and other destinations. "This arrangement has been made to ensure smoother vehicular movement and to avoid congestion," a senior traffic police officer said.
Authorities urged commuters to avoid such flooded stretches altogether and instead use Delhi Metro, which remained unaffected.
Meanwhile, Public Works Department (PWD) officials attributed the accumulation to seepage issues rather than fresh water flowing in from the Yamuna. "This is only rainfall water that is occurring due to poor seepage conditions in the area. It is taking more than usual time to clear out this water as the outlet to Yamuna is closed," a PWD official claimed.
However, residents and commuters on social media shared videos showing Yamuna water flowing onto the road along the Mudrika Marg (Ring Road), stretching from Majnu Ka Tila through Chandgi Ram Akhara up to Nigam Bodh Ghat.
"Waterlogging has brought traffic to a standstill. We are moving at a snail's pace for more than an hour," wrote one commuter on X.
A motorist near Kashmere Gate said, "I was stuck for nearly two hours just to cross a short stretch. Police were diverting traffic, but there was no clarity. Eventually, I parked my car and boarded the metro." Another commuter in the Kalindi Kunj area said waterlogging had completely blocked one side of the road, forcing all vehicles onto a single lane and worsening the jam.
Traffic snarls also had a cascading effect on neighbouring areas, with long tailbacks reported on stretches leading to Wazirabad, ISBT, Sarai Kale Khan and Ashram.
For now, the traffic police have asked commuters to keep monitoring real-time updates on its official social media handles before stepping out.
"Please cooperate with police and avoid flooded stretches. Opt for metro services wherever possible," another police officer said.&nbsp;

After overnight rain, residents of several parts of Delhi woke up to waterlogged streets and flooded homes. Areas such as Mayur Vihar and nearby localities in the Trans-Yamuna region were among those affected.
Officials said the Yamuna was flowing at 205.80 metres at the Old Yamuna Bridge (OYB) at 8 am, above the danger mark of 205.33 metres.
According to an update shared at 8 am, the river received a discharge of 1.76 lakh cusecs from Hathni Kund Barrage, 69,210 cusec from Wazirabad Barrage, and 73,619 from Okhla Barrage Authorities have been making announcements from boats, asking people living near the riverbanks to evacuate.
"We are constantly urging residents to vacate areas at risk of flooding. All district magistrates have been directed to remain prepared for any flood-like situation," an official told PTI Video.

The level rose further to 205.80 metres at 8 am with the inordinate discharges from the three barrages.

The warning mark for the city is 204.5 metres, while the danger mark is 205.3 metres, and evacuation starts at 206 metres. The Old Railway Bridge serves as a key observation point for tracking the river's flow and potential flood risks.
"The increase in the water level is mostly due to a large volume of water being released from the Hathnikund barrage every hour," an official from the central flood room said.
For the first time in this monsoon season, the discharge from the Hathnikund barrage in Haryana exceeded 50,000 cusecs, peaking at 61,000 cusecs around 6 am.
"Since then, 50,000 cusecs of water has been released from the Hathnikund barrage every hour," the official said.
Water released from the barrage typically takes 48 to 50 hours to reach Delhi.

Delhi contributes a staggering 76 per cent of the Yamuna's total pollution load despite accounting for just 2 per cent of its length, a newly published study states. In Delhi, the Yamuna flows for 52 kilometres, of which a critical 22-kilometre segment&mdash; from Wazirabad to Okhla &mdash;has become the focal point of multiple planning and policy efforts.
The study also states that untreated and partially treated sewage discharge remains the primary pollutant of the river.
"While the city generates 792 million gallons per day (MGD) of sewage, only 618 MGD is treated. Nearly 30 per cent of this treated water still fails to meet prescribed discharge standards," the study states.
The study by Primus Partners, published on World Environment Day, also states that over 500 unauthorized colonies and 160 villages still lack sewerage access.
"Currently, 37 of the city&rsquo;s sewage treatment plants (STPs) fail to meet discharge norms and several industrial areas continue to release hazardous effluents, compounded by a lack of environmental flow during lean seasons," the study added.
Highlighting the pollution generated by large drains, the study also states that the Najafgarh and Shahdara drains receive waste from Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
These together contribute an estimated 80 per cent of the river&rsquo;s pollution load within the city.
The study also includes voices from communities living along the river, like fishermen and boatmen.
"These community members shared how pollution has disrupted their daily lives and contaminated water sources. Despite their profound sadness about the Yamuna&rsquo;s condition, these communities still maintain a strong emotional bond with the river," the study says.
Earlier, the BJP government announced several initiatives to clean up the Yamuna.
The BJP-led Delhi government has plans to construct 40 new decentralized STPs, upgrade the overall sewage treatment capacity, install real-time water quality sensors, etc.
In the first budget of the new state government, the water and sewerage sector was allocated funds of Rs 9,000 crore.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta allocated Rs 500 crore for STP repairs in the budget.

Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva, BJP MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat and MLA Raj Kumar Bhatia also addressed the programme.
Sachdeva said that the programme aims to transform the objective of Yamuna cleanliness into a social movement to which all the political parties should contribute.

The incident occurred at 12.20 pm on Tuesday when the man, Vicky, a resident of Dhaka Gaon in Delhi, jumped into the river following a quarrel with his father, police said.
Beat patrol staff -- head constables Ajay, Om Parkash and Mula Ram -- were on duty near the area and witnessed the incident.
They immediately informed senior officers and a team coordinated efforts to rescue the man, a senior officer said.
With the help of private divers and a boat the officers managed to pull Vicky out of the river in semi-conscious state, he said.
Vicky was promptly given medical attention and his father was informed. He was later handed over to his family after necessary treatment, the officer added.

She challenged the Delhi Chief Minister to take a dip in the river, saying, "Arvind Kejriwal has turned the Yamuna River into a drain. Black, dirty, rotten water is flowing in Yamuna. The river is on a ventilator, while Arvind Kejriwal is in his palace and roams around in luxurious cars. Thousands of women from Purvanchal have come here to challenge him- he should not be so scared of women and should come out and take a dip in the dirty water of Yamuna and take a sip of that water."

He celebrated this achievement, stating, "Many congratulations to the people of Delhi. Our struggle bore fruit. The poisonous water that was being sent to Delhi has now stopped. The amount of ammonia in the water coming to Delhi has decreased from 7 ppm to 2 ppm. If we had not raised our voice and struggled, half the population of Delhi would not have been getting water today. We saved Delhi from a huge water crisis."
In the same post, Kejriwal also commented on a notice issued by the Election Commission, which had threatened him regarding his statements on the water crisis. He addressed the matter directly, saying, "The Election Commission has issued a notice and threatened me. My reply to the Election Commission."
Earlier on Friday, Kejriwal had sent a letter to the Election Commission, accusing Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini of being complicit in the water contamination issue.&nbsp;
In his letter, Kejriwal demanded that a criminal case be filed against Saini, claiming the ammonia levels in the raw water supplied to Delhi from Haryana had reached dangerous and unprecedented heights. He pointed out that ammonia levels began to sharply increase around January 15, with the contamination reaching 7 ppm shortly after.&nbsp;
Kejriwal further explained that Delhi&rsquo;s Chief Minister, Atishi, had contacted the Haryana CM several times in an attempt to resolve the crisis, but her efforts were unsuccessful.
In the letter, Kejriwal detailed that Delhi's Chief Minister had personally requested Haryana's CM in December to either reduce the ammonia levels or provide additional water to dilute the contamination. Although Haryana&rsquo;s CM assured action would be taken, Kejriwal claimed no meaningful steps were made, and eventually, the Haryana CM stopped answering calls from Delhi&rsquo;s CM.
Kejriwal alleged that there was a "deliberate conspiracy" on the part of Haryana's CM, a BJP leader, to influence the Delhi elections by sending highly polluted water to the capital.&nbsp;
He argued that the strategy was aimed at creating an artificial water crisis that would have blamed the AAP government in Delhi. This, Kejriwal claimed, would have led to severe public misery for millions of Delhi residents.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission held an urgent meeting with Arvind Kejriwal to discuss the matter, adjusting its schedule due to the ongoing election campaign in Delhi.&nbsp;
The Commission gave Kejriwal a chance to explain his claims regarding the water contamination and its alleged political motives.

In her letter, CM Atishi pointed out that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) water treatment plants are only designed to handle ammonia levels up to 1 ppm. She alleged that "the ammonia levels have steadily increased in the water coming from Haryana to Delhi via River Yamuna due to mixing of untreated sewage or industrial waste from Haryana, with levels rising over 7 ppm in the last two days, i.e., 700% beyond the treatable limit."

She further highlighted the serious consequences of these rising ammonia levels, stating, "These toxic levels of ammonia in water coming from Haryana have rendered Delhi's water treatment plants almost incapable of treating the water effectively, resulting in curtailment of water supply by 15 to 20% i.e. for approximately 34 lakhs people of Delhi. She said, "Despite knowing the toxic effects of releasing ammonia in raw water supply, the note of CEO of Delhi Jal Board leaves no doubt that it is due to the indiscriminate and deliberate dumping of untreated sewage and industrial waste from Haryana that is causing the present water supply crisis in Delhi. This is not an act of negligence; it is an act of water terrorism to deliberately impact the conduct of free and fair elections in Delhi."

Earlier, Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Saini criticized the AAP&rsquo;s allegations, stating that the AAP had failed to manage water distribution and was attempting to blame others.&nbsp;
He remarked, "It is his (Arvind Kejriwal) nature and thinking to allege and then run away. There's a saying, 'thooko aur bhago (spit and run)'. This is what Kejriwal does. I said that you send your chief secretary and I will ask my chief secretary to check the quality of water at Sonipat from where it (Yamuna) is entering Delhi," Saini said.

Three class 10 students drowned in the Yamuna river near the Burari area in Delhi on Tuesday while one of their friends is missing, police said.
The four boys, all residents of Rampark in Loni in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad, had gone to take a bath in the river, they said.
Burari police station received a PCR call informing that three people had drowned in the Yamuna, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) M K Meena said.
"A police team immediately reached the Yamuna bank and thereafter informed the Delhi Fire Services. After reaching the spot, the police personnel were informed that four boys, aged between 15 and 17, had drowned in the Yamuna," the DCP said.
According to preliminary inquiry, the four boys left home around 11 am. Their parents started searching for them when they did not return home, Meena said.
Their family members found their clothes at the riverbank, he said.
Subsequently, a rescue boat team and three fire tenders also reached the spot.
"The rescue boat team fished out three bodies from the river. A search is underway for the fourth boy," Meena said.

The water level of the Yamuna in Delhi breached the danger mark again on Sunday following a surge in discharge from the Hathnikund Barrage into the river after heavy rain in parts of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
Further increase in the water level of the river is expected to impact relief and rehabilitation work in the flood-affected low-lying areas of the capital, officials said.
Revenue Minister Atishi on Saturday said the Delhi government is on high alert due to discharge of over 2 lakh cusecs of water from the Hathnikund Barrage into the river and that some parts of Yamuna Khadar (floodplains) might get inundated if the water level rises to 206.7 metres.
The river water level had been hovering around the danger mark of 205.33 metres for the last few days after reaching an all-time high of 208.66 metres on July 13.
The Central Water Commission's (CWC) data showed the water level rose from 205.02 metres at 10 pm on Saturday to 205.96 metres at 9 am on Sunday. It is expected to reach 206.7 metres by 4 pm.
The India Meteorological Department has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand till July 25.

According to the CWC data, the flow rate at the Yamunanagar-located Hathnikund Barrage crossed the 1 lakh-mark at 9 am on Saturday and oscillated between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh cusecs between 10 am and 5 pm. Since then, it has remained between 1.5 lakh cusecs and 2 lakh cusecs.
"This significant volume of water poses a risk of mid-scale floods in the capital, which is still recuperating from one of the worst flood spells it experienced in the second week of July.
"The second spell of floods will likely see the Yamuna river reclaiming most of its floodplain in Delhi. Given the valuable insights gained from the last flood spell this month, city planners and policy makers must take note of the lessons learned. Citizens are counting on the swift response of authorities, expecting all the gates of the ITO barrage to be opened and fully functional. Additionally, immediate attention should be given to fix any breached sites and bunds," said Bhim Singh Rawat, associate coordinator of the South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers and People.
There have been marginal fluctuations in the water level over the last four to five days amid rain in the upper catchment areas, primarily in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.
Delhi Irrigation and Flood Control Department officials said heavy rains upstream of Delhi will impact rehabilitation of the affected families in the inundated low-lying areas of the capital and they may have to stay in relief camps for a longer period.
It could also impact the water supply in the city, which became normal only on Tuesday after being affected for four or five days due to the inundation of a pump house at Wazirabad.
The pump house supplies raw water to Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla treatment plants, which together account for around 25 per cent of the city's supply.
Parts of Delhi have been grappling with waterlogging and flooding for more than two weeks now.
Initially, a downpour caused intense waterlogging on July 8 and 9, with the city receiving 125 per cent of its monthly rainfall quota in just two days.
Subsequently, heavy rains in the upper catchment areas of the Yamuna, including in Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana, led to the river swelling to record levels.
At 208.66 metres on July 13, the Yamuna surpassed its previous record of 207.49 metres set in September 1978 by a significant margin. It breached embankments and penetrated deeper into the city than it has in over four decades.
The consequences of the floods have been devastating, with more than 27,000 people evacuated from their homes. The losses incurred in terms of property, businesses and earnings have run into crores.
Experts attribute the unprecedented flooding in Delhi to encroachment on the river floodplain, extreme rainfall within a short span of time and silt accumulation that has raised the riverbed.&nbsp;

According to PTI, the Yamuna Kinara Road leading to the Taj Mahal also got waterlogged due to backflow from drains falling into the flooded river.
Officials have set up barricades on the river ghats around the Taj Mahal as a precaution.&nbsp;
Speaking to PTI, Yashvardhan Srivastav, ADM (Finance and Revenue) said, "The water level in Yamuna was 495.8 feet by 4 pm on Sunday. The low-flood level of this river in Agra is 495 feet. The medium flood level here is at 499 feet and high flood level at 508 feet." &ldquo;We are prepared to tackle a flood-like situation if it arises. Posts have been created and boatmen and divers are on alert. Locals in low-lying areas have been advised to remain alert,&rdquo; Srivastava said.
&ldquo;We have set up barricades on the river ghats from Kailash Temple in Sikandra till the Dusshera Ghat near the Taj Mahal,&rdquo; he added.
Arrangements have also been stepped up near the villages in the Agra district bordering the Chambal river, an official said.
Medical camps have been set at these places, the official added. &nbsp;According to the official, the rise in the Yamuna level here was caused by the release of water from two barrages in the last 24 hours -- 1,06,473 cusec water from the Okhla Barrage and 1,24,302 cusec water from the Gokul Barrage in Mathura, where all seven gates have been opened.
Ramesh Wadhwa, a senior citizen residing here, recalled the 1978 floods that ravaged Agra after the Yamuna level crossed the danger mark.

The river water level showed a slight increase on Monday due to rains in catchment areas upstream of the national capital.
According to the CWC's flood-monitoring portal, the water level is expected to drop to 205.15 metres by 7 am on Wednesday.
The Wazirabad water treatment plant, where operations were hit due to inundation of a pump house, has also started working at full capacity, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said.
A Delhi Jal Board (DJB) official said the water supply in the city is near normal.
"There is a shortage of only 10-12 million gallons of water per day (MGD) due to inundation of some tube wells in the river floodplains at Palla," he said.
The DJB extracts around 30 MGD from tubewells installed in the Palla floodplains.
The river has been receding gradually after peaking at 208.66 metres on Thursday. However, a minor fluctuation in the water level cannot be ruled out due to rain in the upper reaches. The inundation of a pump house at Wazirabad due to the swollen Yamuna had impeded operations at Wazirabad, Chandrawal and Okhla water treatment plants, leading to a 25 per cent drop in the water supply.
The Okhla WTP began operating on Friday, and Chandrawal on Sunday.
Kejriwal said in a tweet on Tuesday, "Wazirabad Water treatment plant has also started working at full capacity. Now all WTPs are working at full capacity. DJB worked very hard. Thank you DJB!" Parts of the city have been grappling with waterlogging and flooding issues for a week now.

Friday marked a turning point as the raging Yamuna and the resulting backflow of foul-smelling water from drains spilt into prominent locations such as the Supreme Court, Raj Ghat, and the bustling intersection at ITO.
Prior to the misery on Friday, the river water had already reached the rear ramparts of the Red Fort and inundated one of the city's major bus terminals at Kashmere Gate.
The Ring Road, constructed partially over floodplains, remained closed for three consecutive days near Kashmere Gate last week.
With the situation deteriorating every passing hour last week, Kejriwal had urged the Centre to intervene and the Delhi Police imposed Section 144 of the CrPC in flood-prone areas to prevent public movement there.
The Army was called in for the first time since the 2010 floods to repair a broken flow regulator at drain no. 12, the reason behind the flooding in central parts of the capital on Friday.
The consequences of the floods have been devastating with over 26,000 people evacuated from their homes. The losses incurred in terms of property, businesses, and earnings have amounted to crores.
Experts attribute the unprecedented flooding in Delhi to encroachment on floodplains, extreme rainfall occurring within shorter durations, and silt accumulation that raised the riverbed.
The low-lying areas near the river in the northeast, east, central, and southeast districts, inhabited by around 41,000 people, are considered prone to flooding.
A study on "Urban Flooding and its Management" by the Irrigation and Flood Control Department identifies east Delhi under the floodplain region and highly vulnerable to floods.
Despite this, encroachment and development have occurred at a rapid pace in the ecologically sensitive region over the years.
Letters exchanged between the Delhi Forest Department and the primary land-owning agency in the city, Delhi Development Authority, show that 2,480 hectares of land in the Yamuna floodplains have been encroached upon or developed since 2009.&nbsp;

After wreaking havoc on lives and livelihoods in parts of Delhi close to it, the swollen Yamuna on Saturday morning followed a downward trend, albeit at a slow pace of a few centimetres per hour.
However, it is still flowing over two metres above the danger mark of 205.33 metres.
The situation could worsen if weather predictions of more rain in the capital and upper catchment areas come true.
According to the Central Water Commission's flood-monitoring portal, the Yamuna water level declined to 207.62 metres by 7 am on Saturday from its peak of 208.66 metres at 8 pm on Thursday.
With the flow rate from the Hathnikund Barrage in Haryana's Yamunanagar decreasing over the past two days, further decline is expected.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD), however, anticipated moderate rain in the city over the next two days and "heavy to very heavy" rainfall over Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh during the next five days, raising concern about a rise in the water level in the river.
In the case of more rain in Delhi, experts said, stormwater may overflow and take longer than usual to drain out. Waterlogging could compound the situation further.

The Yamuna in Delhi swelled to 207.55 metres on Wednesday, breaching its all-time record of 207.49 metres set in 1978, government agencies said on Wednesday.
According to the Central Water Commission's (CWC) flood-monitoring portal, the water level at the Old Railway Bridge crossed the 207-metre mark at 4 am, the first time since 2013, and rose to 207.55 metres by 1 pm.
The river is likely to rise further, an official of the irrigation and flood control department said.
As a precautionary measure, the Delhi Police imposed section 144 CrPC in flood-prone areas of the national capital on Wednesday, officials said.
Section 144 CrPC prevents the unlawful assembly of four or more persons and public movement in groups.
Delhi recorded a rapid increase in the Yamuna water level over the last three days.
It shot up from 203.14 metres at 11 am on Sunday to 205.4 at 5 pm on Monday, breaching the danger mark of 205.33 metres 18 hours earlier than expected.
The river had exceeded the evacuation mark of 206 metres on Monday night, prompting the relocation of people residing in flood-prone areas to safer locations and a closure of the Old Railway Bridge for road and rail traffic.
Delhi water minister Saurabh Bharadwaj told the media that the city government was prepared to deal with the situation. "We are monitoring the situation and all possible steps are being taken," he said.
Embankments are being constructed in the low-lying areas to prevent the entry of floodwater into other parts of the capital in case the Yamuna water level rises further.
Major floods in Delhi occurred in 1924, 1977, 1978, 1995, 2010, and 2013. Analysis of flood data from 1963 to 2010 indicate an increasing trend for floods occurring in September, and a decreasing trend in July, according to research.
Bhim Singh Rawat, associate coordinator, South Asia Network on Dams, Rivers, People (SANDRP), attributed the unprecedented rise in the Yamuna water level in Delhi to riverbed elevation due to significant silt accumulation.
"Lack of dredging, more than 20 bridges and three barrages within the 22-km river stretch from Wazirabad to Okhla obstruct the flow, leading to deposition of silt in the riverbed and formation of a lot of mid-stream sandbars," he told PTI.
Locations of these sandbars include beneath the Signature Bridge, between the ITO barrage and Yamunabank, between ISBT Kashmiri Gate and ORB, and between ORB and Geeta Colony Bridge.
Rawat said that in 1978, the river reached a height of 207.49 metres in September after becoming saturated in the monsoon season and it coincided with a flow rate exceeding 7 lakh cusecs from the Tajewala Barrage.
The maximum flow rate this time was 3.59 lakh cusec on Tuesday. An official explained that the sharp rise in water level was due to continuous rainfall in the upper catchment areas and saturated soil from heavy precipitation in Delhi and nearby regions over the weekend.
People living in low-lying areas have been shifted to safer places at higher altitudes, the department said.
It said 45 boats have been deployed for awareness, evacuation and rescue work and NGOs have been roped in to provide relief to the evacuated people.
