Relations between China and the United Kingdom might hit a fresh bump, with a UK court hearing a petition on the situation in the Chinese region of Xinjiang.
The Xi Jinping government has been accused of severe human rights violations against Xinjiang's Uyghur community, which is mostly Muslim.
The High Court in London is set to hear a case in which the UK government has been accused of failing to block the import of cotton products from Xinjiang. This might be the first time that a foreign court hears legal arguments from the Uyghurs over the issue of forced labour in Xinjiang.
The case has been filed by the Munich-based World Uyghur Congress and the Global Legal Action Network, a non-profit human rights group.
It might be an attempt to make European nations follow the example of the United States of America which has banned cotton products suspected of being made in Xinjiang as punishment for Beijing's forced labour policies.
Researchers say Xinjiang produces 85% of cotton grown in China, constituting one-fifth of the world's cotton.

The Uyghur issue particularly gained international attention after the release of a UN report in 2018 which was followed by the UN human rights chief&rsquo;s visit to the region, leaks of classified government documents such as the one published by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists famously known as the &lsquo;China Cables&rsquo;, investigations by human rights activists, and most importantly testimonies from members of the community themselves. &nbsp;
The alleged detentions, forcible training as well as abuses inside enclosed government facilities have been described by the government of the United States, parliaments of the UK as well as European Union nations and many international groups as a form of &ldquo;genocide&rdquo;. But mystery still shrouds the region and the so-called detention centres that China calls Vocational Education and Training Centers (VETCs) as no media or human rights observers have been given unfettered access to them.&nbsp;

Located in the northwest, Xinjiang covers more than 1.6 million sq km and is the largest region of China. It is rich in oil and natural gas besides its natural beauty.&nbsp;

It also has the country&rsquo;s largest coal reserves, an estimated 40 percent of the national total, and the largest natural gas reserves, according to the Chinese Ministry of Land Resources. China is eyeing to capitalize on these energy reserves to power its cities and industries.&nbsp;

The term Xinjiang translates to &lsquo;new frontier&rsquo; or &lsquo;borderland&rsquo;.&nbsp;
Xinjiang has a long history of cross-migration by different minority groups owing to its location along the ancient Silk Road&mdash;a major trade route active from the second century to the mid-15th century.&nbsp;
The region has been declared independent twice. In 1933 and 1944 an independent East Turkestan was declared by the then-majority Uyghurs. Once the Uyghurs were defeated by nationalist Chinese and the second time by the Chinese communists with help from the erstwhile Soviet Union.&nbsp;
China believes it has an ancient claim to Xinjiang and considers it an &ldquo;inseparable part of the Chinese nation&rdquo;.&nbsp;
Uighurs, however, disagree. They argue that the region&rsquo;s borders have been drawn and redrawn by the dominant powers over centuries.&nbsp;
Who are the Uyghurs?&nbsp;
There are about 12 million Uyghurs, mostly Muslim, living in Xinjiang, which is officially known as the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR) also called East Turkestan by the Uyghur community.&nbsp;
The language spoken by the Uyghurs, which is of the same name, has Turkic roots.
The community culturally and ethnically doesn&rsquo;t identify with the Han Chinese--the largest ethnic group in the country.&nbsp;
The Uyghurs have been practising Islam for centuries, tracing their religious influence to the Karakhanid, a Turkic fiefdom that ruled Central Asia from the 9th to the 13th century. Prior to this, they followed other religions including Zoroastrianism and Buddhism.&nbsp;
Uyghurs pitted against Han Chinese?&nbsp;
Other ethnic groups residing in the region include Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Mongols, Tajiks, Uzbeks and Tatars but of late, Xinjiang has allegedly witnessed the mass migration of members of the Han Chinese community to the region. &nbsp;
Many have accused the state of encouraging the resettlement to allegedly change the demography and dilute the minority population that makes up less than half of the Xinjiang residents.&nbsp;
Beijing has also allegedly stepped-up security measures in Xinjiang in recent years in what it calls an effort to combat separatism and Islamic extremism it thinks stems from the different ethnic and religious identity of the Uyghurs in the region.&nbsp;
In 1953, the Uyghur population was spread in more than 75 percent of the region, according to a census cited in the UN report while the Han Chinese accounted for seven percent. That number now stands at around 42 percent.&nbsp;

India on Thursday abstained from voting on a draft resolution in the UN Human Rights Council on holding a debate on the human rights situation in China’s restive Xinjiang region.
Human rights groups have been sounding the alarm over what is happening in the resource-rich north-western Chinese province for years, alleging that more than one million Uyghurs had been detained against their will in a large network of what Beijing calls "re-education camps".
The draft resolution on “holding a debate on the situation of human rights in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China” was rejected in the 47-member Council after 17 members voted in favour, 19 members voted against, including China, and 11 abstentions, including India, Brazil, Mexico and Ukraine.
The draft resolution was presented by a core group consisting of Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, UK and USA, and co-sponsored by a range of states, including Turkey.
China director at Human Rights Watch, Sophie Richardson, said in a statement that for the first time in its history, the UN’s top human rights body considered a proposal to debate the human rights situation in the Xinjiang region of China.
“While the Council’s failure to adopt the proposal is an abdication of responsibility and a betrayal of Uyghur victims, the extremely close vote highlights the growing number of states willing to take a stand on principle and shine a spotlight on China’s sweeping rights violations,” Richardson said.
Richardson noted that “nothing will erase the stain of China’s crimes against humanity, laid bare” by a recent report of former UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet.
“We urge incoming High Commissioner Volker Turk to brief the Council on his office’s report, and we call on states, companies, and the international community to implement the report’s recommendations and hold Chinese authorities accountable for their international crimes,” Richardson added.
Serious allegations of human rights violations against Uyghurs and other predominantly Muslim communities in China were brought to the attention of the UN Human Rights Office and UN human rights mechanisms since late 2017.

It said the world must now pay "urgent attention" to the human rights situation in the Xinjiang.
The assessment brings the UN seal to many of the allegations about China's treatment of people in Xinjiang that have long been made by rights groups, Western nations and the Uyghur community in exile.
China's mission in Geneva hit out at the report and maintained its firm opposition to its release.
"Based on the disinformation and lies fabricated by anti-China forces and out of presumption of guilt, the so-called 'assessment' distorts China's laws and policies, and wantonly smears and slanders China, and interferes in China's internal affairs," it said.
"People of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang are living a happy life in peace and contentment. It is the greatest human rights protection and the best human rights practice," the mission insisted.

U.N. human rights chief Michelle Bachelet is undertaking a six-day visit to China that includes stops in Xinjiang, a remote northwestern region where the Chinese government has been accused of human rights violations and genocide against Uyghurs and other ethnic groups.  In her first interaction with media in China, Michelle Bachelet said on Thursday that Beijing can play an "important role" in discussions to help aid "meaningful progress" on key global human rights issues.  Bachelet arrived in China on Monday, kicking off the first trip by a holder of the office since 2005 amid concerns by the US and others that it could lead to an endorsement rather than scrutiny of China's rights record. US state department Ned Price called her visit a mistake.   Her trip has been long in the making after Bachelet said in 2018 she wanted unfettered access to Xinjiang. China said the visit should not be based on a presumption of guilt. Rights groups worry that if Bachelet does not press China hard enough, her post-trip report may not give a full picture and could be used by Beijing to justify its actions in Xinjiang. The World Uyghur Congress urged Bachelet in a letter to ensure that her team can move freely, access all detention facilities and have unsupervised contact with Uyghurs.  International scrutiny of the government's actions in Xinjiang heightened in 2018 after the United Nations said a million Uyghurs were held in "massive internment camps" set up for political indoctrination. China initially denied the existence of any camps, then later admitted it had set up "vocational training centres" with dormitories where people can "voluntarily" check themselves in to learn about law, Chinese language and vocational skills.

US President Joe Biden on Thursday signed into law a legislation that bans imports from China's Xinjiang region over concerns about Beijing's treatment of the Uyghur Muslim minority.
The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act is the latest in a series of attempts by the US to get tough with China over its alleged systemic and widespread abuse of ethnic and religious minorities.
It requires US government agencies to expand their monitoring of the use of forced labour by China's ethnic minorities. Crucially, it creates a presumption that goods coming from Xinjiang are made with forced labour. Businesses will have to prove that forced labour, including by workers transferred from Xinjiang, was not used in manufacturing the product before it will be allowed into the US.
The House and Senate each passed the measure with overwhelming support from Democrats and Republicans.
The United States says China is committing genocide in its treatment of the Uyghurs. That includes widespread reports by rights groups and journalists of forced sterilisation and large detention camps where many Uyghurs allegedly are forced to work in factories.

China has consistently rejected the genocide accusations. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian last week called allegations of forced labor in Xinjiang “a lie” and said the bill “is pure political manipulation with the intention to undermine Xinjiang’s stability and development under the pretext of human rights.”
