Chinese President Xi Jinping has departed Beijing for Washington to meet US President Donald Trump amid ongoing tensions between the world's two largest economies.

Xi Jinping Heads To Washington For Trump Talks As US-China Trade, AI And Taiwan Tensions Loom

Chinese President Xi Jinping has departed Beijing for Washington to meet US President Donald Trump amid ongoing tensions between the world's two largest economies.

China's leader Xi Jinping departed Beijing on Wednesday, bound for Washington where he will meet with US President Donald Trump, state media said.
The highly anticipated talks come as the two countries confront rising fears about increasingly capable artificial intelligence systems, and as both sides look to ease tensions on trade.
Xi "left Beijing by special plane", accompanied by his wife Peng Liyuan, his right-hand man Cai Qi, and foreign minister Wang Yi, among others, state broadcaster CCTV said.
Trump is due to personally meet Xi on his arrival at Joint Base Andrews, before their meetings on Thursday, according to the White House.
The US leader was greeted by China's vice president when he landed in Beijing for his state visit in May.
Xi and Peng will attend a ceremony at the White House on Thursday morning, which will include a military flyover.
The two leaders are due to hold talks and Trump is set to host Xi for a state dinner at the White House in the evening.
The visit will wrap up on Friday morning where the two presidential couples will have tea at the White House then visit the National Archives to round out the trip.
The White House said that the visit marks "a significant milestone in the relationship between the two countries."
But the meeting between the two leaders could touch on multiple points of tension, with Trump telling reporters that he will be "discussing almost everything" with Xi.
Trump's Iran war casts a long shadow, as China seeks to avoid US sanctions against countries dealing with Tehran -- despite reports that Beijing supplied Tehran with intelligence for a strike on US troops.
A trade war is of even greater concern and the world's two largest economies are still seeking to mitigate the fallout from Trump's global tariffs.
The threat of war over the island of Taiwan -- which China claims as its territory -- looms large as well.

Analysts, however, have tempered expectations by cautioning there might not be many concrete deals announced.
Preliminary talks between US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and his Chinese counterpart He Lifeng discussed creating a communication channel for AI concerns, but released little in the way of detail.
Bessant said at the time that the two sides discussed setting up a way to communicate about AI issues called the "US-China AI dialogue."
"The US has proposed that we have a notification mechanism between the two countries," Bessent said.
The son of jailed Hong Kong pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai made an appeal to Xi from Washington that his 78-year-old father be released.
Trump said in May, however, that he had discussed Lai's fate with Xi and his release was unlikely.
But Beijing did release the founder of an underground church, Ezra Jin, after Trump raised his case with Xi.
China's negotiating arsenal includes its dominance in the supply of rare earths, critical materials used for high-tech products that are vital to US manufacturers.
Beijing successfully pressured Washington to back down from its sky-high tariffs last year after imposing stringent controls on exports of rare earths.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing to boost trade ties, discuss human rights, and tackle national security concerns.

UK PM Keir Starmer Seeks Stronger Ties with China Amid Global Challenges

Keir Starmer's Diplomatic Mission to China

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing to boost trade ties, discuss human rights, and tackle national security concerns.

Britain's Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Chinese leader Xi Jinping stressed the need for closer relations between their countries in order to face geopolitical headwinds, as the two met in Beijing on Thursday.
Starmer's visit to China is the first by a British prime minister since 2018 and follows a slew of Western leaders seeking a rapprochement with Beijing recently, pivoting from an increasingly unpredictable United States.
The leaders met at the opulent Great Hall of the People, with Starmer telling Xi during their meeting that China is a "vital player on the global stage".
"It's vital to build a more sophisticated relationship where we identify opportunities to collaborate, but also allow a meaningful dialogue on areas where we disagree," Starmer told Xi.
Xi also stressed the need for stronger ties with a "long-term view" in the context of what he called a "complex" international situation.
"China and the UK need to strengthen dialogue and cooperation, whether it is to maintain world peace and stability or promote the economies and livelihoods of both countries," Xi told Starmer.
Xi also noted they would need to overcome difficulties in order to move forward but that cooperation would unlock a "new chapter" in their relations.
"Good things often come with difficulties... Leaders will not shy away from difficulties and will forge ahead bravely," he said.
"Cooperation between our two countries will surely take the lead and open a new chapter in China-UK relations and cooperation."
The two leaders will also have lunch together after their meeting.
Starmer, who is in China until Saturday, also met the country's third highest-ranking official Zhao Leji in the morning and is expected to hold talks with Premier Li Qiang in the afternoon.
Zhao said relations were on "the correct track to improvement and development" while Starmer called the visit a chance to "find positive ways to work together".
Britain and China are set to sign a cooperation agreement targeting supply chains used by migrant smugglers, according to Downing Street.
The issue of irregular migrants is highly sensitive for Starmer, who has promised to crack down on people smugglers and stem a wave of arrivals that has fuelled rising support for the far right.
Starmer will also travel to economic powerhouse Shanghai on Friday before making a brief stop in Japan to meet Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
 - Repairing ties -
London and Beijing enjoyed what they described as a "Golden Era" a decade ago but relations deteriorated from 2020 when Beijing imposed a national security law on Hong Kong and cracked down on pro-democracy activists in the former British colony.
Starmer is expected to discuss the case of Hong Kong media mogul and democracy supporter Jimmy Lai, 78, who is facing years in prison after being found guilty of collusion charges in December.
Human rights abuses, alleged spying and cyber attacks, and China's perceived support for Russia's war in Ukraine have also strained ties.
Nevertheless, China -- the world's second-largest economy -- remains Britain's third-largest trading partner, though UK exports to the Asian giant plummeted 52.6 percent year-on-year in 2025, according to British government statistics.
The visit by Starmer, who took the helm in 2024, follows finance minister Rachel Reeves's trip to Beijing last year, as the centre-left Labour government looks to improve trade relations and fulfil its primary goal of boosting UK economic growth.
He is accompanied by around 60 business leaders from the finance, pharmaceutical, automobile and other sectors, as well as cultural representatives, as he tries to balance attracting vital investment and appearing firm on national security concerns.
Starmer's trip also comes as Britain faces a rift with its closest ally, the United States, following Trump's bid to seize Greenland and his brief threat of tariffs against Britain and other NATO allies.

US President Trump and China's Xi Jinping conclude under-two-hour meeting in South Korea, with trade, nuclear testing, and geopolitical issues dominating discussions.

Trump-Xi talks end without immediate breakthrough amid nuclear tensions

US President Trump and China's Xi Jinping conclude under-two-hour meeting in South Korea, with trade, nuclear testing, and geopolitical issues dominating discussions.

Crunch talks between US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping focused on their trade war wrapped up in under two hours Thursday with no immediate public comment from either leader on whether progress was made.
Trump headed straight to Air Force One in Busan, South Korea after the first face-to-face meeting in six years with Xi, waving and pumping his first as he boarded the plane. The jet took off minutes later.
Xi was seen boarding his limousine outside the closed-door meeting, which lasted around an hour and 40 minutes.
Ahead of the talks, Trump complimented a smiling Xi as a "very tough negotiator" as they shook hands.
Minutes before they met the US leader said he has ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing on a level with China and Russia.
"We'll have a great understanding," Trump said, predicting a "fantastic relationship for a long period of time".
Xi acknowledged before the meeting began in earnest that both sides did not always see eye to eye, but should strive to be "partners and friends".
"China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world," said Xi.
Sitting opposite each other each leader was flanked by senior officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury chief Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Xi's team, which arrived from Beijing shortly before -- the US side was already in South Korea -- included Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The US leader's latest missive on nuclear weapons testing broadened the stakes for his talks with Xi.
 - 'Even in five years' -
Minutes before meeting Xi, Trump wrote on Truth Social that "because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis".
Trump added that in terms of nuclear weapons stockpiles, China was a "distant third" behind the United States and Russia "but will be even in 5 years".
The comments came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, in defiance of US warnings.
Trump did not provide details or respond to a question from a journalist about his surprising nuclear announcement before the crucial meeting with Xi.
The world's two top economies' trade tussle -- encompassing everything from rare earths to soybeans and port fees -- has rocked markets and gummed up supply chains for months.
Following productive preparatory talks by top officials, Trump said on Wednesday on his way to South Korea that "a lot of problems are going to be solved" in a "great meeting".
Trump indicated that the agreement would include lowering 20 percent tariffs on Chinese goods related to fentanyl, which has killed tens of thousands of Americans.
Of particular importance to Trump -- with an eye on US farmers -- is whether China will resume purchases of American soybeans.
Another major issue is export controls on rare earths announced by Beijing this month that prompted Trump to call the Xi summit into question.
Beijing holds a virtual monopoly on these materials, which are essential for sophisticated electronic components across a range of industries.
"The easiest wins could include removing port fees for ships or lifting some fentanyl-related tariffs, which fall fully under presidential authority. China, in turn, could agree to purchase more US commodities to show goodwill," Yue Su at The Economist Intelligence Unit told AFP.
 - Crowning achievement -
The meeting is taking place on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit of 21 countries in Gyeongju including the leaders of Japan, Australia and Canada.
It is the final stop on an Asia tour that saw Trump showered with praise and gifts, including a replica of an ancient Korean golden crown.
In Japan, new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize and gave him a putter and a gold-plated golf ball.
However, Trump's hopes of a re-run of his 2019 meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone frontier appear to have dashed.
Trump said though that they would meet in the "not too distant future" and that he would like to "straighten out" tensions between North and South Korea.
On Thursday, he hailed the military alliance with South Korea as "stronger than ever" and said he had given the green-light for Seoul to build a nuclear powered submarine.
One surprise in the talks could be if Xi brings up Taiwan, with speculation that Beijing might press Trump to water down US backing for the self-ruled island.
Since 1979, Washington has recognised Beijing over Taipei as the sole legitimate Chinese power, even though the United States remains Taiwan's most powerful ally and its main arms supplier.

US President Donald Trump directs Pentagon to begin nuclear weapons testing, following Russia's successful underwater drone test, signaling heightened global security concerns.

Trump orders US to start nuclear weapons testing

US President Donald Trump directs Pentagon to begin nuclear weapons testing, following Russia's successful underwater drone test, signaling heightened global security concerns.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday he had ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing on a level with China and Russia -- just minutes before opening a high-stakes summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, in defiance of Washington's warnings.
"Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis," Trump wrote in a social media post that specifically referenced Russia and China.
Trump also noted the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country, praising his own efforts to do "a complete update and renovation of existing weapons."
He added that "Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years."
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) says nine countries possess nuclear weapons: Russia, the United States, China, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea.
Of the roughly 12,331 nuclear warheads ICAN counts, more than 5,500 belong to Russia while the United States owns 5,044.
Trump offered no details of the precise nature of the testing to be undertaken, but said the process would "begin immediately."
Putin announced on Wednesday the successful testing of a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, the second weapons test in days.
In televised remarks broadcast from a military hospital treating Russian soldiers wounded in Ukraine, Putin said there was "no way to intercept" the unmanned drone torpedo dubbed "Poseidon."
He said Poseidon can travel faster than conventional submarines, dive deep and reach any continent in the world.
After a first test of a cruise missile on Sunday, Trump chided Putin saying he ought to end the war in Ukraine "instead of testing missiles."
Last week, a planned summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest was scrapped.
Between 1945 -- with the first ever atomic bomb test in New Mexico on July 16 -- and 1992, the United States has conducted 1,054 nuclear tests and carried out two nuclear attacks on Japan during World War II.
The last US nuclear test explosion was in September 1992, with a 20-kiloton underground detonation at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site.
In October 1992, then-president George H.W. Bush imposed a moratorium on further tests, which was continued by successive administrations. Nuclear testing was replaced by non-nuclear and subcritical experiments using advanced computer simulations.
Trump is in South Korea to meet with Xi, as the leaders of the world's top two economies come face-to-face for the first time in the Republican president's second term.

The 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit began in Tianjin with leaders including PM Modi, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin. The meeting focuses on future strategies, regional peace, and global cooperation.

PM Modi attends SCO summit in Tianjin

The 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit began in Tianjin with leaders including PM Modi, Xi Jinping, and Vladimir Putin. The meeting focuses on future strategies, regional peace, and global cooperation.

The summit meeting of the Heads of State of the 10-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) began in Tianjin on Monday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other leaders of the organisation began a day-long deliberation to chalk out the future course of the bloc.&nbsp;
Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed the leaders.&nbsp;
The 25th summit was formally kicked off here on Sunday night with a massive banquet hosted by Xi .&nbsp;
It was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This year's summit was stated to be the largest of the SCO group as China, which holds the Presidency of the organisation this year, has invited 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to attend the SCO Plus summit.
On Monday the leaders address the meeting enunciating their future vision for the organisation.
Modi's speech is being keenly watched for its content in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's tariff war and the Indian prime minister's meeting with Xi on Sunday, which was widely expected to provide a new roadmap for the ties.
In his welcome banquet address, Xi said the SCO bears greater responsibilities in safeguarding regional peace and stability, and boosting the development of various countries in a world of increasing uncertainties and accelerated changes.
Addressing the banquet, Xi expressed confidence that with concerted efforts of all parties, the summit will be a complete success, and that the SCO is certain to play an even bigger role and achieve more progress. He said it will make a greater contribution to boosting the unity and cooperation among member states, pooling the strength of the Global South and pushing for more progress of human civilisation.
Founded in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has expanded from six founding members into a 26-nation family of 10 members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.
With major emerging markets and developing countries such as China, Russia and India among its members, the SCO represents nearly half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.

It is Putin's first trip abroad since his March reelection, and the second in just over six months to China, an economic lifeline for Russia after the West hit it with unprecedented sanctions over its military offensive in Ukraine.

Xi, Putin hail ties as 'stabilising' force in chaotic world

It is Putin's first trip abroad since his March reelection, and the second in just over six months to China, an economic lifeline for Russia after the West hit it with unprecedented sanctions over its military offensive in Ukraine.

Leaders Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin framed their nations' ties as a stabilising force in a chaotic world as they met Thursday in Beijing, where the Russian president is seeking greater Chinese support for his war effort in Ukraine.
It is Putin's first trip abroad since his March reelection, and the second in just over six months to China, an economic lifeline for Russia after the West hit it with unprecedented sanctions over its military offensive in Ukraine.
Putin was greeted by Xi at a grand welcoming ceremony outside Beijing's Great Hall of the People, footage by state broadcaster CCTV showed.
In a meeting, Xi then told his "old friend" Putin that China-Russia relations were "conducive to peace".
"China is ready to work with Russia to... uphold fairness and justice in the world," Xi added.
Putin, in turn, told Xi the two countries' relations were "stabilising factors in the international arena".
"Relations between Russia and China are not opportunistic and not directed against anyone," Putin said, according to a Kremlin readout.
Following closed-door meetings, the two leaders then signed a joint statement on deepening their countries' "comprehensive strategic partnership", state news agency Xinhua said.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said that China "can't have its cake and eat it too" with regard to the West and Moscow.
"It can't have it both ways, and want to have (better) relationships with Europe and other countries while simultaneously continuing to fuel the biggest threat to European security in a long time," Patel said, referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
<h2>No 'further escalation'&nbsp;</h2>
The Russian leader's arrival came hours after he hailed his country's troops for advancing on "all fronts" on the battlefield in Ukraine, following a major new ground assault.
And the Kremlin said Russia and China had agreed to oppose "further escalation" of the conflict in Ukraine on Thursday.
China has dismissed claims it is aiding Russia's war in Ukraine and insisted that the West is exacerbating the conflict by sending arms to Ukraine.
Xi has also rebuffed Western criticism of his country's close ties with Moscow.
But their economic partnership has come under close scrutiny from the West in recent months.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China's support for Russia's "brutal war of aggression" in Ukraine had helped Russia ramp up production of rockets, drones and tanks -- while stopping short of direct arms exports.
China claims to be a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, which it has never condemned and in which it has sought to frame itself as a mediator.
And in a statement to the media following talks with Putin, Xi said the two sides agreed on the need for a "political solution" to resolving the war.
"China's position on this issue has always been clear," Xi said in footage broadcast by Russian TV.
That position included "respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries" as well as "respecting the reasonable security concerns of all sides", the Chinese leader added.
The remarks echo a paper issued by Beijing last year, which Western countries said could enable Russia to hold much of the territory it has seized in Ukraine.
China also "looks forward to the early restoration of peace and stability on the European continent", Xi said, promising Beijing would "continue to play a constructive role to that end".
Later Thursday, China's state news agency Xinhua reported that Beijing "supports the convening of an international peace conference recognized by Russia and Ukraine" in order to "push for an early political settlement."
Putin also referenced Beijing's complaints about growing security cooperation between the United States and its allies in Asia, warning of "harmful" military alliances in the region.
On Thursday afternoon, the Russian leader met Premier Li Qiang -- China's number two official -- who said Beijing was willing to "continue to deepen cooperation in various fields".
Putin and Xi then attended a ceremony celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Beijing, Xinhua said.
&nbsp;
- Transactions slow - &nbsp;
China-Russia trade has boomed since the Ukraine invasion and hit $240 billion in 2023, according to Chinese customs figures.
But after Washington vowed to go after financial institutions that facilitate Moscow, Chinese exports to Russia dipped in March and April, down from a surge early in the year.
An executive order by President Joe Biden in December permits secondary sanctions on foreign banks that deal with Russia's war machine, allowing the US Treasury to cut them out of the dollar-led global financial system.
That, coupled with recent efforts to rebuild fractured ties with the United States, may make Beijing reluctant to openly push more cooperation with Russia -- despite what Moscow may want, analysts say.
The Russian leader is due to travel to the northeastern city of Harbin for a trade and investment expo on Friday.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock labelled Chinese President Xi Jinping a dictator. Beijing quickly criticised the tag.

Speaking on a live show, German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock tagged Chinese President Xi Jinping as a dictator. Beijing was quick to respond to the comment, saying that the statement was &ldquo;open political provocation.&rdquo;
The German diplomat has often criticised Beijing, saying that it was quickly becoming a &ldquo;systemic rival than a trade partner,&rdquo; as per Reuters. Xi was also called a dictator by US President Joe Biden.
Baerbock, speaking to Fox News, made the statement while speaking about Russia&rsquo;s war in Ukraine. &ldquo; If Putin were to win this war, what sign would that be for other dictators in the world, like Xi, like the Chinese president,&rdquo; she asked.
The German Foreign Minister that China had disrupted the &ldquo;fundamentals of how we live together in this world,&rdquo; Reuters reported.
The news comes as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is heading to Russia for security talks after two days of meetings with US President Joe Biden&rsquo;s national security adviser over the weekend in Malta.

Chinese President Xi Jinping will not attend the G20 Summit in New Delhi this week and the delegation will be led by Premier Li Qiang, the foreign ministry announced in Beijing on Monday.
At the invitation of the government of the Republic of India, Premier of the State Council Li Qiang will attend the 18th G20 Summit to be held in New Delhi, India on September 9 and 10, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said in a brief statement.&nbsp;
Speculations were rife over Jinping's presence at the event as Sina-India relations have gone cold following the stand-off &nbsp;in Arunachal Pradesh in 2020.
Although, there have been a lot of high-level military talks between both sides and the talks ended without any fruitful results.

US President Joe Biden opened his virtual meeting with Chinese premier XI Jinping on Monday by saying their goal is to ensure competition &ldquo;does not veer into conflict.&rdquo;
The two leaders met by video amid mounting tensions in the US-China relationship. Biden has criticized Beijing over human rights abuses against Uyghurs in northwest China, squelching democratic protests in Hong Kong, military aggression against the self-ruled island of Taiwan, and more.
Biden would have preferred to meet Xi in person, but the Chinese leader has not left his country since before the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The White House floated the idea of a virtual meeting as the next best thing to allow for the two leaders to have a candid conversation about a wide range of strains in the relationship.
Xi, who called Biden his &ldquo;old friend&rdquo;, said the two sides need to improve communication. The two leaders traveled together when both were vice presidents and know each other well.
Relations between the superpowers plummeted during the presidency of Donald Trump, who launched a trade war with China while assailing Beijing's response to an international probe into the origins of the Covid pandemic in the Chinese city of Wuhan.

US President Joe Biden said on Thursday that his first phone call with Chinese leader Xi Jinping since taking office lasted two hours. "Last night, I was on the phone for two straight hours with Xi Jinping," Biden told reporters. It was an unusually long interaction for a US president. He challenged President Xi on human rights, trade and regional muscle-flexing during the call, which aimed at setting the tone for the US-China relationship.
