US President Trump and China's Xi Jinping conclude under-two-hour meeting in South Korea, with trade, nuclear testing, and geopolitical issues dominating discussions.

Crunch talks between US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping focused on their trade war wrapped up in under two hours Thursday with no immediate public comment from either leader on whether progress was made.
Trump headed straight to Air Force One in Busan, South Korea after the first face-to-face meeting in six years with Xi, waving and pumping his first as he boarded the plane. The jet took off minutes later.
Xi was seen boarding his limousine outside the closed-door meeting, which lasted around an hour and 40 minutes.
Ahead of the talks, Trump complimented a smiling Xi as a "very tough negotiator" as they shook hands.
Minutes before they met the US leader said he has ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing on a level with China and Russia.
"We'll have a great understanding," Trump said, predicting a "fantastic relationship for a long period of time".
Xi acknowledged before the meeting began in earnest that both sides did not always see eye to eye, but should strive to be "partners and friends".
"China and the US can jointly shoulder our responsibility as major countries and work together to accomplish more great and concrete things for the good of our two countries and the whole world," said Xi.
Sitting opposite each other each leader was flanked by senior officials including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury chief Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Xi's team, which arrived from Beijing shortly before -- the US side was already in South Korea -- included Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao and Vice Premier He Lifeng.
The US leader's latest missive on nuclear weapons testing broadened the stakes for his talks with Xi.
 - 'Even in five years' -
Minutes before meeting Xi, Trump wrote on Truth Social that "because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis".
Trump added that in terms of nuclear weapons stockpiles, China was a "distant third" behind the United States and Russia "but will be even in 5 years".
The comments came a day after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, in defiance of US warnings.
Trump did not provide details or respond to a question from a journalist about his surprising nuclear announcement before the crucial meeting with Xi.
The world's two top economies' trade tussle -- encompassing everything from rare earths to soybeans and port fees -- has rocked markets and gummed up supply chains for months.
Following productive preparatory talks by top officials, Trump said on Wednesday on his way to South Korea that "a lot of problems are going to be solved" in a "great meeting".
Trump indicated that the agreement would include lowering 20 percent tariffs on Chinese goods related to fentanyl, which has killed tens of thousands of Americans.
Of particular importance to Trump -- with an eye on US farmers -- is whether China will resume purchases of American soybeans.
Another major issue is export controls on rare earths announced by Beijing this month that prompted Trump to call the Xi summit into question.
Beijing holds a virtual monopoly on these materials, which are essential for sophisticated electronic components across a range of industries.
"The easiest wins could include removing port fees for ships or lifting some fentanyl-related tariffs, which fall fully under presidential authority. China, in turn, could agree to purchase more US commodities to show goodwill," Yue Su at The Economist Intelligence Unit told AFP.
 - Crowning achievement -
The meeting is taking place on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit of 21 countries in Gyeongju including the leaders of Japan, Australia and Canada.
It is the final stop on an Asia tour that saw Trump showered with praise and gifts, including a replica of an ancient Korean golden crown.
In Japan, new Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she would nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize and gave him a putter and a gold-plated golf ball.
However, Trump's hopes of a re-run of his 2019 meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at the Demilitarized Zone frontier appear to have dashed.
Trump said though that they would meet in the "not too distant future" and that he would like to "straighten out" tensions between North and South Korea.
On Thursday, he hailed the military alliance with South Korea as "stronger than ever" and said he had given the green-light for Seoul to build a nuclear powered submarine.
One surprise in the talks could be if Xi brings up Taiwan, with speculation that Beijing might press Trump to water down US backing for the self-ruled island.
Since 1979, Washington has recognised Beijing over Taipei as the sole legitimate Chinese power, even though the United States remains Taiwan's most powerful ally and its main arms supplier.

US President Donald Trump said Thursday he had ordered the Pentagon to start nuclear weapons testing on a level with China and Russia -- just minutes before opening a high-stakes summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The move comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow had successfully tested a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, in defiance of Washington's warnings.
"Because of other countries testing programs, I have instructed the Department of War to start testing our Nuclear Weapons on an equal basis," Trump wrote in a social media post that specifically referenced Russia and China.
Trump also noted the United States has more nuclear weapons than any other country, praising his own efforts to do "a complete update and renovation of existing weapons."
He added that "Russia is second, and China is a distant third, but will be even within five years."
The International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) says nine countries possess nuclear weapons: Russia, the United States, China, France, United Kingdom, Pakistan, India, Israel and North Korea.
Of the roughly 12,331 nuclear warheads ICAN counts, more than 5,500 belong to Russia while the United States owns 5,044.
Trump offered no details of the precise nature of the testing to be undertaken, but said the process would "begin immediately."
Putin announced on Wednesday the successful testing of a nuclear-capable, nuclear-powered underwater drone, the second weapons test in days.
In televised remarks broadcast from a military hospital treating Russian soldiers wounded in Ukraine, Putin said there was "no way to intercept" the unmanned drone torpedo dubbed "Poseidon."
He said Poseidon can travel faster than conventional submarines, dive deep and reach any continent in the world.
After a first test of a cruise missile on Sunday, Trump chided Putin saying he ought to end the war in Ukraine "instead of testing missiles."
Last week, a planned summit between Trump and Putin in Budapest was scrapped.
Between 1945 -- with the first ever atomic bomb test in New Mexico on July 16 -- and 1992, the United States has conducted 1,054 nuclear tests and carried out two nuclear attacks on Japan during World War II.
The last US nuclear test explosion was in September 1992, with a 20-kiloton underground detonation at the Nevada Nuclear Security Site.
In October 1992, then-president George H.W. Bush imposed a moratorium on further tests, which was continued by successive administrations. Nuclear testing was replaced by non-nuclear and subcritical experiments using advanced computer simulations.
Trump is in South Korea to meet with Xi, as the leaders of the world's top two economies come face-to-face for the first time in the Republican president's second term.

The 25th summit was formally kicked off here on Sunday night with a massive banquet hosted by Xi .&nbsp;
It was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
This year's summit was stated to be the largest of the SCO group as China, which holds the Presidency of the organisation this year, has invited 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to attend the SCO Plus summit.
On Monday the leaders address the meeting enunciating their future vision for the organisation.
Modi's speech is being keenly watched for its content in the backdrop of US President Donald Trump's tariff war and the Indian prime minister's meeting with Xi on Sunday, which was widely expected to provide a new roadmap for the ties.
In his welcome banquet address, Xi said the SCO bears greater responsibilities in safeguarding regional peace and stability, and boosting the development of various countries in a world of increasing uncertainties and accelerated changes.
Addressing the banquet, Xi expressed confidence that with concerted efforts of all parties, the summit will be a complete success, and that the SCO is certain to play an even bigger role and achieve more progress. He said it will make a greater contribution to boosting the unity and cooperation among member states, pooling the strength of the Global South and pushing for more progress of human civilisation.
Founded in Shanghai in June 2001, the SCO has expanded from six founding members into a 26-nation family of 10 members, two observers and 14 dialogue partners spanning Asia, Europe and Africa.
With major emerging markets and developing countries such as China, Russia and India among its members, the SCO represents nearly half of the world's population and a quarter of the global economy.

"China is ready to work with Russia to... uphold fairness and justice in the world," Xi added.
Putin, in turn, told Xi the two countries' relations were "stabilising factors in the international arena".
"Relations between Russia and China are not opportunistic and not directed against anyone," Putin said, according to a Kremlin readout.
Following closed-door meetings, the two leaders then signed a joint statement on deepening their countries' "comprehensive strategic partnership", state news agency Xinhua said.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said that China "can't have its cake and eat it too" with regard to the West and Moscow.
"It can't have it both ways, and want to have (better) relationships with Europe and other countries while simultaneously continuing to fuel the biggest threat to European security in a long time," Patel said, referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
<h2>No 'further escalation'&nbsp;</h2>
The Russian leader's arrival came hours after he hailed his country's troops for advancing on "all fronts" on the battlefield in Ukraine, following a major new ground assault.
And the Kremlin said Russia and China had agreed to oppose "further escalation" of the conflict in Ukraine on Thursday.
China has dismissed claims it is aiding Russia's war in Ukraine and insisted that the West is exacerbating the conflict by sending arms to Ukraine.
Xi has also rebuffed Western criticism of his country's close ties with Moscow.
But their economic partnership has come under close scrutiny from the West in recent months.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken warned China's support for Russia's "brutal war of aggression" in Ukraine had helped Russia ramp up production of rockets, drones and tanks -- while stopping short of direct arms exports.
China claims to be a neutral party in the Ukraine conflict, which it has never condemned and in which it has sought to frame itself as a mediator.
And in a statement to the media following talks with Putin, Xi said the two sides agreed on the need for a "political solution" to resolving the war.
"China's position on this issue has always been clear," Xi said in footage broadcast by Russian TV.
That position included "respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries" as well as "respecting the reasonable security concerns of all sides", the Chinese leader added.
The remarks echo a paper issued by Beijing last year, which Western countries said could enable Russia to hold much of the territory it has seized in Ukraine.
China also "looks forward to the early restoration of peace and stability on the European continent", Xi said, promising Beijing would "continue to play a constructive role to that end".
Later Thursday, China's state news agency Xinhua reported that Beijing "supports the convening of an international peace conference recognized by Russia and Ukraine" in order to "push for an early political settlement."
Putin also referenced Beijing's complaints about growing security cooperation between the United States and its allies in Asia, warning of "harmful" military alliances in the region.
On Thursday afternoon, the Russian leader met Premier Li Qiang -- China's number two official -- who said Beijing was willing to "continue to deepen cooperation in various fields".
Putin and Xi then attended a ceremony celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations between Moscow and Beijing, Xinhua said.

- Transactions slow - &nbsp;
China-Russia trade has boomed since the Ukraine invasion and hit $240 billion in 2023, according to Chinese customs figures.
But after Washington vowed to go after financial institutions that facilitate Moscow, Chinese exports to Russia dipped in March and April, down from a surge early in the year.
An executive order by President Joe Biden in December permits secondary sanctions on foreign banks that deal with Russia's war machine, allowing the US Treasury to cut them out of the dollar-led global financial system.
That, coupled with recent efforts to rebuild fractured ties with the United States, may make Beijing reluctant to openly push more cooperation with Russia -- despite what Moscow may want, analysts say.
The Russian leader is due to travel to the northeastern city of Harbin for a trade and investment expo on Friday.

PM Modi upheld the &lsquo;many achievements&rsquo; of BRICS in the last one and a half decades and said the members have become an influential voice for the emerging economies of the world. He further added that the platform has also been useful for focusing on the priorities of developing countries.

Talking about the theme India has chosen for its presidency, PM Modi said it reflects the objective to ensure that BRICS is more productive in next 15 years.
The virtual meeting was also attended by Brazil President Jair Bolsanaro, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese President Xi Jinping were among those who attended.

Russia and China are expected to insist that the BRICS Bank extend aid to the war-torn country. However, India, Brazil and South Africa may not agree to this.
