China had earlier said that the balloon was not for spying, but a civilian airship meant for research. The Xi Jinping government said that destroying a civilian airship was a "clear overreaction" and violative of international practice.
The balloon incident prompted US Secretary of State Antony Blinken to cancel a weekend trip to China that was aimed at dialling down tensions that were already high between the countries.
The Pentagon said that the balloon, which was carrying sensors and surveillance equipment, was manoeuverable and showed it could change course. It allegedly loitered over sensitive areas of Montana where nuclear warheads are siloed, leading the military to take actions to prevent it from collecting intelligence.
A US Air Force fighter jet shot down the balloon on the afternoon of 4 February off the Carolina coast. Television footage showed a small explosion, followed by the balloon slowly drifting toward the water. An operation was launched to recover its remnants.

A threat alert was sounded in USA as an alleged Chinese spy balloon was spotted over American airspace.
The Pentagon on 2 February 2023 said that the government was tracking the high-altitude surveillance balloon which is as big as 3 buses. Officials said that immediate action was taken to prevent collection of sensitive information by the balloon.
"NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) continues to track and monitor it closely," Pentagon Spokesman Brigadier Gen Pat Ryder told reporters. US President Joe Biden has been briefed about the incident, a senior defence official said, adding the Pentagon is exploring various options.
The Pentagon added that the balloon does not pose a threat to commercial air traffic as it is flying at a higher altitude. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen Mark Milley and US Northern Command Gen Glen VanHerck have recommended not to "take kinetic action&rdquo; because of the potential risk to the safety and security of people on the ground from the possible debris field, officials said.
The development came days ahead of US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's trip to Beijing.
&ldquo;Currently, we assess that this balloon has limited additive value from an intelligence collection perspective. But we are taking steps nevertheless to protect against foreign intelligence collection of sensitive information," said a defence official.

China, which followed a strict one-child policy for decades, has reported its first overall population decline in recent years.
China had 8.5 lakh fewer people at the end of 2022 as compared to 2021, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. The count excluded the populations of Hong Kong, Macao, foreign residents, and Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its territory.
That left a total of 1.411.75 billion, with 9.56 million births against 10.41 million deaths, the bureau said at a briefing on 17 January 2023.
Men also continued to outnumber women by 722.06 million to 689.69 million, the bureau said, a result of the now-abandoned one-child policy and a traditional preference for male offspring to carry on the family name.
China has long been the world's most populous nation, but is expected to soon be overtaken by India.
The last time China is believed to have recorded a population decline was during the Great Leap Forward at the end of the 1950s, Mao Zedon'g disastrous drive for collective farming and industrialization that produced a massive famine killing tens of millions of people.

As India takes over the G20 presidency, it has a chance to make a big impact on the global diplomatic stage.

The G20 meet in Indonesia this week saw world leaders navigate two important conflicts. The Russia - Ukraine War looms large over all international spaces, but also of note in Bali this year was the thawing of relations between the US and China. PM Modi attended the conference in person, and had a packed schedule, holding bilateral talks with many world leaders in the wake of India&rsquo;s growing importance as an economic centre of power, in an increasingly bipolar world.
Established in 1999 after a series of major international debt crises, the Group of 20 aims to unite world leaders around shared economic, political and health challenges.
China and the US have been competing as two major global power centres for the past few years. This competition has, at times, got ugly. The world's two largest economies were locked in a bitter trade battle that saw them impose tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of one another's goods. They are also embroiled in conflict over the self-ruled country of Taiwan, which China considers an integral internal region, while the US is invested in the country&rsquo;s independence due to its significance in the semiconductor manufacturing industry.
Tension over Taiwan has frozen much of China-US talks over the last few years. At G20, however, US President Joe Biden and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping broke the ice, and met for nearly three hours to hash out some of the thorniest issues in their relationship, including the question of Taiwan, the economy and a return to climate negotiations.
Although the reconciliatory comments from both leaders have gone a long way to resume normal ties, they remain competitors in the global arena. Both countries are vying for influence over the Asia Pacific region. Joe Biden took the opportunity of an Indonesia presidency for the G20, to announce a series of initiatives in the region, including efforts to promote electric vehicle use, improve clean-water access and support female entrepreneurs.
However, despite China&rsquo;s slowing growth, many ASEAN countries maintain close economic ties with the country. At the conference, ASEAN countries reiterated their strong ties with China while taking pains not to upset Biden.
The US is increasingly placing India at the centre of its ambition to detach global supply chains from the clutches of China. The Biden administration&rsquo;s top economic diplomat, Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen, emphasised that point on a visit to New Delhi.
PM Modi had a packed schedule at the conference, where he took over the G20 presidency from Indonesian President Joko Widodo. He held bilateral talks with many leaders of constituent countries, including his first in-person meeting with new Indian-origin Prime Minister of the UK, Rishi Sunak. The two leaders discussed ways to increase commercial linkages, raise the scope of security cooperation in context of India&rsquo;s defence reforms and make people-to-people ties even stronger.
The other leaders PM Modi held talks with included French Prime Minister Emmanual Macron, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, and the newly elected Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni.
India will host the conference next year, and the Prime Minister said that the world is looking to India&rsquo;s leadership of this premier economic forum with &lsquo;hope&rsquo;.
India&rsquo;s presidency of the G20 also coincides with its increasing role in the global diplomatic arena. Speculation has been rife that New Delhi could emerge as a mediator in the Russia - Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Modi has repeatedly called for talks between Moscow and Kyiv, and emphasised that this is not a time for war. The G20 Presidency offers New Delhi an opportunity to expand its diplomatic clout amid grave international threats.&nbsp;

Xi held talks with Michel in Beijing on Thursday. In his talks, Michel &ldquo;pleaded for use of vaccines and then raised the question of China&rsquo;s measures and government measures,&rdquo; the Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post newspaper reported from Brussels.
European officials say Xi&rsquo;s comments during a meeting with Michel signal that he is ready to loosen controls further.
The Chinese leader is also reported to have said that the dominant Omicron strain is "less lethal", but expressed concern about vaccinating the elderly, the Post reported.
This is the first time Xi commented on the public protests, which were reported to have rattled his government. Following this, security has been stepped up in all main cities in China.

U.S. President Joe Biden told Asian leaders on Sunday that U.S. communication lines with China would stay open to prevent conflict, as the first of three summits of world leaders this week ended, with tense talks almost certain in the days ahead.

Biden also called on Myanmar's military rulers to follow a peace plan they agreed to with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), while condemning North Korea's missile launches and Russia's "brutal and unjust" invasion of Ukraine.

This would be their first in-person meeting after Biden became the US President in January 2021. The two leaders have spoken over the phone as many as five times.

US President Joe Biden would meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on November 14 on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Indonesia

This would be their first in-person meeting after Biden became the US President in January 2021. The two leaders have spoken over the phone as many as five times.

US President Joe Biden would meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping on November 14 on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Indonesia during which they will discuss ways to work together where their interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community, the White House announced on Thursday.
The meeting comes amid the fractious relationship between the two nations.
&ldquo;The Leaders will discuss efforts to maintain and deepen lines of communication between the United States and the PRC (People's Republic of China), responsibly manage competition, and work together where our interests align, especially on transnational challenges that affect the international community,&rdquo; White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.
&ldquo;The two Leaders will also discuss a range of regional and global issues,&rdquo; Pierre said.
This would be their first in-person meeting after Biden became the US President in January 2021. The two leaders have spoken over the phone as many as five times.
Xi&rsquo;s last face-to-face meeting with a US leader came in June 2019, when he reached a truce with former president Donald Trump that led to a trade deal six months later. The bilateral ties fell into a downward spiral as Covid-19 spread around the globe.

Biden and Xi discussed a possible face-to-face meeting during a two-hour call in late July.
Since then, tensions escalated over a visit by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. The White House called China's military exercises that followed an "unprecedented pressure campaign" for the self-governed island that China claims as its own.
China slapped sanctions against Pelosi and launched live-fire military drills around the island. But Beijing also blamed Biden for not intervening.
Xi cut off talks with the administration on a number of important issues, including counternarcotics and climate.
Biden has also raised Beijing's ire by suggesting repeatedly that the US will defend Taiwan if attacked by China.
The White House has repeatedly said the remarks do not represent a change in US policy, but China has not been satisfied.
The Biden administration also imposed sweeping curbs on the sale of advanced chips to China, a move designed to maintain the US&rsquo;s technological edge over Beijing.
&ldquo;Throughout his presidency, President Biden has made it a priority to keep lines of communication open with the PRC at all levels to responsibly manage the competition between our two countries,&rdquo; a senior administration official told reporters during a conference call.
The meeting will be a part of the ongoing effort to build and manage relationships with China. Biden believes there is no substitute for face-to-face diplomacy to carry these discussions forward, said the official.

President Xi Jinping on Wednesday expressed "deep concern" over the security of Chinese nationals working in Pakistan on the CPEC projects and sought "reliable and safe environment" for them during his talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is in Beijing on his maiden visit to bolster the all-weather friendship.
Sharif, who arrived on Tuesday night on a two-day visit, met Xi and the two leaders held wide-ranging talks during which they agreed to strengthen the all-weather friendship and the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
"I am deeply concerned about the security of Chinese people in Pakistan and hope that Pakistan will provide a reliable and safe environment for Chinese institutions and personnel going to Pakistan for cooperation," Xi told Sharif in their meeting at the ornate Great Hall of People, according to an official statement.&nbsp;
Sharif is the first Head of the State to felicitate Xi on his recent record victory as General Secretary of the once-in-a-five-year Congress of the ruling Communist Party of China (CPC), a privilege accorded only to party founder Mao Zedong.
This is the second time in about two months Xi expressed concern over the recurring attacks on Chinese nationals working in Pakistan by the Baloch Nationalist Army and other militant groups that oppose the Chinese investments in the troubled province under the USD 60 billion China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
India has objected to China over the CPEC as it is being laid through the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
Sharif met Xi last month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit at Samarkand in Uzbekistan.
In his Samarkand meeting with Sharif, Xi had called for providing solid protection for hundreds of Chinese working on the CPEC projects.
With recurring attacks on its workers, China is reportedly pressing Pakistan to permit the Chinese security agencies to provide security for their personnel which, according to press reports, Islamabad is resisting as it meant boots on the ground for Chinese armed forces.
In his meeting with Sharif, Xi who is expected to be in power for his life like Mao and accorded priority to China's ties Pakistan in his last 10 years with the CPEC, said China and Pakistan are good friends, good partners and good brothers&rdquo; and they demonstrated "iron-clad friendship&rdquo; by supporting each other in a &ldquo;chaotic world&rdquo;.
"China has always viewed China-Pakistan relations from a strategic height and long-term perspective, and has always placed Pakistan in priority in our neighbouring diplomacy," he said.
China is willing to work with Pakistan to enhance all-round strategic cooperation, accelerate the construction of a closer China-Pakistan community of shared future in the new era, and inject new impetus into the all-weather strategic cooperation partnership between China and Pakistan, he said.
He said both sides should make good use of the mechanism of the Joint Cooperation Committee of the CPEC to promote the construction of the projects more efficiently and build it into a high-quality development demonstration project of the BRI.
Recent reports said China is deeply unhappy over the inordinate delays of the CPEC projects which Sharif says will be accorded priority to complete with new deadlines.
"We should accelerate the construction of supporting infrastructure of Gwadar Port, and give play to the role of the port in radiating and driving the development of regional connectivity," Xi said.
The CPEC connects Xinjiang with Pakistan's strategic Gwadar port in Balochistan.
"Both sides should make joint efforts to create conditions for the early implementation of the upgrading and reconstruction project of Mainline No. 1 railway line and the Karachi ring railway project," Xi said.
The Mainline No. 1 railway line refers to the Karachi-Peshawar rail line, which the previous Imran Khan government was not keen on as it was estimated to cost about USD 10 billion, increasing Pakistan's debt burden.

According to reports from Pakistan, Sharif is expected to make a case for Beijing to provide more help for his government to shore up the balance of payments position to avert a crisis similar to Sri Lanka.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said Pakistan's total non-Paris Club bilateral debt currently stands at about USD 27 billion, of which Chinese debt is about USD 23 billion.
Pakistan's state-run APP news agency reported that in his meeting with Sharif, Xi announced 500 million yuan (USD 70 million) as relief for the victims of recent floods in Pakistan. China earlier announced USD 70 million in aid for flood relief.
Xi told Sharif that China deeply sympathizes with the Pakistani people who suffered from the devastating floods, and will provide additional emergency assistance to help Pakistan in post-disaster reconstruction.
Sharif told Xi that the world cannot live without China.
"The world cannot live without China, and no force can contain China's development in isolation. It is believed that President Xi Jinping's foresight will not only continue to lead China to create more brilliant achievements, but also lead the world to a brighter future," the Chinese statement quoted Sharif as saying.
"I am very honoured to be one of the first foreign leaders invited to visit China after the successful convening of the landmark 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, which fully demonstrates the deep 'iron-clad' friendship between Pakistan and China," Sharif said.
"On behalf of the Pakistani government and people, I would like once again to warmly congratulate President Xi Jinping on his re-election as General Secretary of the CPC. Over the past decade, under the wise leadership of President Xi Jinping, China has made great achievements in development that can be called the miracle of the times," he said.
He also said Pakistan firmly pursues the One-China Policy, firmly supports China's position on issues of core interests such as Taiwan, Xinjiang and Hong Kong.

After the talks, Xi held a welcome banquet for Sharif in the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People.
Sharif will also meet Premier Li Keqiang and Li Zhanshu, the Chairman of China's Parliament -- the National People's Congress (NPC) -- to discuss the all-weather ties.
During his visit, a number of agreements are expected to be signed, officials said.&nbsp;

Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will arrive in China on Tuesday on his maiden two-day visit to felicitate President Xi Jinping on his re-election, amid turmoil at home and Beijing's increasing concerns over recurring attacks against the Chinese workers in the country.
Sharif will be the first head of the government to felicitate 69-year-old Xi in person for securing an unprecedented third five-year term at the recently held Communist Party Congress, becoming the first leader after party founder Mao Zedong to continue in power after 10-year tenure.
All of Xi&rsquo;s predecessors retired after 10 years in office and considering his firming grip on the party and military, Xi like Mao is widely expected to continue in power for life.
"I would like to express my heartiest felicitations to my brother General Secretary Xi Jinping and the Communist Party of China for starting a New Era of China's progress; and I say with complete confidence that it heralds the dawn of a brighter era of China-Pakistan friendship," Sharif said in an article published in the state-run Global Times&nbsp; on Monday.
Sharif along with some of the world leaders is visiting Beijing to greet Xi.
Vietnam's Communist Party leader Phu Trong is the first guest of honour invited by Xi.
On Monday, Trong held talks with Xi who has announced plans to make China a modern socialist state.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz will arrive in China on November 4 to meet Xi while Samia Suluhu Hassan, President of Tanzania, will come ahead of him on November 2 to felicitate the Chinese President.
Besides Xi, Sharif will meet Premier Li Keqiang and Li Zhanshu, the Chairman of China's Parliament - the National People's Congress, to discuss the all-weather ties.
Both Li Keqiang and Li Zhanshu are set to retire after March next year as a new set of leaders and officials will take over the party and government headed by Xi in his third five-year term.
Ahead of Sharif's visit, Pakistan's Foreign Office said that the trip is also "expected to advance the wide-ranging bilateral cooperation agenda with the conclusion of a number of MoUs/Agreements in diverse areas, and consolidate the momentum of CPEC cooperation in the wake of the 11th meeting of the CPEC Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) on October 27, 2022." On Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian lauded Sharif&rsquo;s praise for the USD 60 billion China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the flagship project of Xi&rsquo;s pet initiative of the multibillion-dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
India has objected to the CPEC as it is being laid through the Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK).
"We highly appreciate Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's remarks. We believe they show the importance he attaches to the visit to China," Zhao said.
He also referred to the Kashmir issue in his article.
"We seek friendly relations with our neighbouring countries on the basis of mutual respect and spirit of cooperation, and desire peaceful resolution of all outstanding disputes including Kashmir issue through dialogue and diplomacy based on UN charter and resolutions," he said.
This will be Sharif's second meeting with Xi after he assumed office in April 2022. He met Xi last month on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Uzbekistan.
Sharif&rsquo;s visit is taking place amid political impasse in his country as former prime minister Imran Khan queered the pitch to press for elections with Long March and the deepening economic crisis.

His trip to China comes at a time when cash-strapped Pakistan is making all efforts to arrange billions of dollars for payment of debts and bridge trade deficit. Pakistan owes Paris Club countries a combined sum of around USD 10.7 billion.
Sharif is expected to make a case for Beijing to provide more help for his government to shore up the balance of payments position to avert a crisis similar to Sri Lanka.

In his Samarkand meeting with Sharif, Xi had called for providing solid protection for hundreds of Chinese working on the CPEC projects.

China is also unhappy over the delays in the projects of the CPEC, which is the flagship scheme of Xi's multibillion-dollar pet project BRI, resulting in cost overruns and discontentment among Chinese investors.
Last month, Pakistan Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa held talks with Chinese Defence Minister General Wei Fenghe in a surprise visit to China ahead of his retirement amid reports that China is also concerned over Pakistan warming up to the US, the reported use of Pakistan air bases by American drones to conduct attack in Afghanistan.
Chinese observers say that China is also increasingly worried about the continued political turmoil in Pakistan resulting in the weakening of its public institutions, especially the erosion of the influence of its military, over which Beijing banked on to sustain the close ties.
About concerns over recurring attacks on Chinese in Pakistan, Sharif in the article said their protection is his top priority.

"Safety and security of Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan remains our top priority. The loss of precious Chinese lives in Pakistan is our loss. We would not let anyone damage our close friendship and strong economic partnership. My government would spare no effort to bring to justice the perpetrators of these reprehensible acts," he said.
He also praised the CPEC, saying it is a "game changer." "As a game-changer for Pakistan and subsequently for the broader region, the CPEC is the central pillar of my government's development agenda. Under its rubric, the successful completion of energy and transport infrastructure projects have set the stage for Pakistan's economic revitalization and for laying a solid foundation for cooperation in diverse sectors,&rdquo; he said.&nbsp;

The first day of the 20th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party saw a video of the Galwan clash between Indian and Chinese soldiers being played at the event. Brief footage of the violent brawl was reportedly played at the Great Hall of People on 16 October 2022.
Also present at the gathering was Qi Fabao, a Chinese military commander who had been injured in the clash which occurred in June 2020. Fabao is one of the 304 delegates from the People&rsquo;s Liberation Army (PLA) and the People&rsquo;s Armed Police who are attending the twice-a-decade meeting.
Speaking at the event, China's President Xi Jinping said that the Chinese military headed by him will intensify troop training and combat preparedness to &ldquo;fight and win&rdquo; besides creating a strong system of "strategic deterrence."

Jinping added that China would "become more adept at deploying military forces on a regular basis" to shape the country's "security posture, deter and manage crises and conflicts and win local wars".
While Jinping did not name any countries, China is currently engaged in a territorial dispute with many of its neighbours, including India.

Photos circulating in social media on Thursday showed two banners hung on an overpass of a major thoroughfare in the northwest of the Chinese capital, protesting against Xi&rsquo;s unpopular zero-Covid policy and authoritarian rule.
The banners read &nbsp;&ldquo;Food, not COVID test&rdquo;; &ldquo;Reform, not a Cultural Revolution&rdquo;; &ldquo;Freedom, not lockdowns&rdquo;; &ldquo;Votes, not a leader. Dignity, not lies. Citizens, not slaves&rdquo; etc.
The banners appeared to have rattled officials in China &ndash; where political protest is rare - as they hurriedly deployed police on numerous over bridges in Beijing to ensure that the protests are not spread, while mobile patrolling has been intensified in the city.
China's internet censors moved quickly to scrub any social media posts about the protest.&nbsp;
Images on Twitter, which is blocked in China, showed smoke spiraling up from a fire on an elevated roadway and banners calling for an end to the hardline zero-COVID policy and the overthrow of Communist Party leader and President Xi Jinping.
Posts containing the hashtags Beijing or Haidian were quickly blocked on China's popular Weibo social media platform. Some of the posts expressed support and praised the unidentified person's courage without referring to the incident directly.
Others said on Twitter that their accounts had been temporarily disabled on another major Chinese platform, WeChat, after they shared photos of the incident. A song named "Sitong Bridge," the name of the section of elevated roadway where the incident reportedly happened, was removed from online music platforms.
Xi, who came to power in 2012, is expected to receive a third five-year term as party leader at the end of the congress.
His government's strict anti-pandemic polices, which have placed millions of people under quarantine, have prompted small protests and confrontations with authorities.
