&ldquo;After watching the video, I couldn't believe my eyes,&rdquo; President Lee Jae Myung expressed in a Facebook post on Thursday. &ldquo;That was an intolerable violation and clear human rights abuses of a minority person.&rdquo; During a subsequent Cabinet Council meeting, Lee reiterated his condemnation of the abuse and voiced concerns regarding South Korea's international reputation. He instructed government ministries to assess the human rights situation facing migrant workers and other minorities and to develop pragmatic steps to prevent such violations.
South Korean human rights activists released the video on Wednesday. The footage, filmed at a brick factory in the southwestern city of Naju in late February, was captured and provided by a fellow Sri Lankan worker.
The video depicts a forklift operator, identified as South Korean, lifting another worker bound with plastic wraps and tied to bricks. As the forklift maneuvers him around the factory yard, laughter from another individual is audible.
The 31-year-old victim, who arrived in South Korea in November, endured this abuse for approximately five minutes as a punishment by the South Korean forklift operator, dissatisfied with the victim's brick wrapping skills, according to Mun Gil Ju, a local activist involved in releasing the video.
Naju city officials stated that the factory head mentioned the event was organized as a prank. However, Mun emphasized that &ldquo;bounding a person with plastic wraps&rdquo; should not be trivialized as a prank.
The company employs about 24 workers, including seven from East Timor and Sri Lanka, in addition to South Koreans. According to Naju officials, the Sri Lankan victim continues to work at the factory.
The Labour Ministry announced on Thursday that it will launch an investigation into the factory and review whether foreign workers have been subjected to beating, bullying, and delayed wages.
Many migrant workers, predominantly from Southeast Asia and China, engage in low-paying or hazardous jobs at factories, farms, and other sites, where activists report frequent discrimination and mistreatment. (AP)

A tragedy occurred in a Jaipur jewellery factory where four workers died from toxic fumes while extracting metal from a septic tank. Two others are critically injured.

Four men who entered a septic tank in Sitapura Industrial Area here to retrieve gold and silver particles died of toxic fumes, police said on Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Monday night in a jewel factory in G-Block of the Jewellery Zone.
The deceased were identified as Sanjeev Pal, Himanshu Singh, Rohit Pal, and Arpit Yadav, police said.
Two more workers, Ajay Chauhan and Rajpal, were rushed in critical condition to the Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, while two others, Amit Pal and Suraj Pal, were discharged after primary medical care.
The workers had gone down a 10-foot-deep tank after which they allegedly lost consciousness.
Initially, the workers refused to enter the tank due to the intense heat and presence of toxic gases. However, the company management persuaded them with the promise of extra money, initial reports state.
Amit and Rohit, who were the first to descend into the tank, began gasping and calling for help immediately. The remaining six went down the tank quickly to help the first two out but also fell unconscious.
The septic tank allegedly contained a chemical sludge, believed to be carrying hold particles of gold and silver, residue from the jewellery manufacturing and cleaning processes, a police source stated.
The sludge is periodically cleaned to extract valuable metals, a practice not uncommon in jewellery units.
The Rajasthan State Human Rights Commission issued notices to the Jaipur Collector and Police Commissioner.
The Commission Chairperson Justice G R Moolchandani took suo moto cognisance and issued the notices.
"Notices have been issued to the District Collector and Jaipur Police Commissioner, expecting them to conduct an effective investigation in the matter, take immediate action against the culprits, submit its report to the Commission and ensure providing the required compensation amount to the dependents/family members of the deceased," the chairperson said in the order.
"Also, by issuing notice to Achal Jewelers Private Limited's owner Arun Kumar Kothari and CEO Vikas Mehta, the Commission expects them to provide compensation amount to the dependents/family members of the workers at their own level and send its compliance report and its reply to the Commission without delay," the order said.
Meanwhile, former chief minister Ashok Gehlot targeted the state government over such incidents in the state.
He claimed that in the last 10 days, 11 people have died while cleaning septic tanks and gutters in Deeg, Bikaner and Jaipur.
"It seems that the state government is not paying attention to the sanitation workers. The state government announced in the budget to buy machines but that announcement is still on paper. When will the government wake up?" he said in a post on X.

As per a survey coducted, 90% of workers expect a pay rise this year. Of them, close to 20% of the employees surveyed are anticipating an increase of 4-6%, followed by 19% anticipating a 10-12% hike. This is as per ADP Research Institute's report titled - People at Work 2023: A Global Workforce View.&nbsp;
The report revealed that in India, 78% of workers received a pay rise last year, and the hikes averaged 4-6%.
This year, even if there is an absence of salary hike in the country, a substantial 65% of employees express a desire for some form of merit bonus, paid holidays or travel compensation, it stated.
'Getting a pay rise has become increasingly important, particularly for those in lower- and middle-income brackets. With the rising cost of living, disposable incomes have been affected, and even higher earners are feeling the pressure. People are struggling to afford essentials and are unable to indulge in luxuries due to the financial constraints caused by increasing interest rates, higher rents, and food costs. Though inflation may have reached its peak, it appears that it will take a while for it to return to more manageable levels,'ADP India Managing Director Rahul Goyal noted.
The report, People at Work 2023: A Global Workforce View, by US-headquartered human capital management (HCM) solutions provider ADP is based on a survey among 32,000 workers in 17 countries, including 2,000 employees in India.
The report further revealed that demands for higher pay come after around six in 10 workers (62%) were given a pay rise last year averaging at 6.4%.
The findings come amid the ongoing cost of living crisis and as workers in many countries demonstrate a willingness to take industrial action in order to force their employers to be more generous on pay and conditions, it said.
Globally, more than four in 10 workers (44%) believe they're underpaid for their job, it added.
