The Opposition BJP staged a walkout from the House, claiming that presence of its members in the Assembly when the motion was being read out would "tantamount to supporting corruption cases".

In a fresh flashpoint between the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal and the BJP government at the Centre, the Bengal Assembly on 13 March 2023 passed a motion against "misuse of central agencies".
The TMC accused the Central government of targeting party leaders via investigation agencies.
The Opposition BJP staged a walkout from the House, claiming that presence of its members in the Assembly when the motion was being read out would "tantamount to supporting corruption cases".
The motion was introduced by senior TMC MLA Tapas Roy, under Rule 185 of the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly.
Referring to Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari&rsquo;s assertion that minister Partha Bhowmik will be put behind bars within a month, Roy said the country, since 2014, has been witnessing rampant misuse of central agencies for harassing political leaders.
Bhowmik had moved a privilege motion against Adhikari.
"We have seen how the leader of opposition threatened the members of the state's ruling party, including ministers, with dire consequences," Roy said.

As the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) lost the Sagardighi bypolls in West Bengal, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the results unearthed the "unholy alliance" of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress and CPI(M) adding that TMC can alone fight the three forces.
Congress candidate Bayron Biswas won the Sagardighi bypolls by a margin of 22,986. In her reply to ANI over the setback in Sagardighi Assembly bye-election, the Trinamool supremo said there was an "unholy" alliance.
She said, "We have lost the Sagardighi bypolls, but I do not blame anyone for the defeat. In democratic elections, there can be some minus and plus. However, there is an 'unholy alliance' between the Congress, Left and BJP, which we strongly condemn."
Banerjee said BJP vote share was shifted to the Congress and Left in the combine. West Bengal CM said Congress and Left parties should not call themselves antiBJP claiming that Congress and CPI(M) took BJP's help to defeat TMC.

Despite contesting on less than half the seats in Tripura, the Trinamool Congress has tried to make a big impact among the voters.
The campaign has been led by party supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, amid claims of being the only party which can oust the BJP from both the state and the Centre.
The TMC appears to have taken a leaf out of the BJP's book, by basing its pitch on the "Bengal model of development". Here's that the TMC is promising in Tripura, to make the most in the 28 seats where it is contesting.
The TMC is saying that it would create 2 lakh new jobs in 5 years, with 50,000 of these in the first year itself. It would give ₹1,000 every month to 1 lakh jobless youth, and also to the 10,000 sacked teachers unless the matter reaches a legal resolution.
To woo the tribal vote, the TMC has promised an additional secretariat in north Tripura for tribal council work.
A main feature of the party manifesto is introduction of schemes already implemented in Bengal. Farmers in Tripura would get ₹10,000 every year. Poor families would get ₹2,000 as funeral assistance. Female heads of households would get income support. ₹25,000 would be given to impoverished families at the time of daughters' weddings.
On the education front, the TMC has promised a ₹1,000 annual scholarship for SC/ST students in classes 4 to 8. The party said it would set up a skill university, and issue student credit cards for easy education loans. Students would also be given bicycles.
Startup incubators would be set up in all 8 districts of the state.

In a concerning incident, soldiers of India's Border Security Force were attacked by more than a hundred Bangladeshi villagers. The attack took place on 26 February 2023 along the India-Bangladesh border in Berhampore sector in Murshidabad district.
BSF said that its jawans had stopped Bangladeshi farmers from bringing their cattle to Indian fields for grazing. Subsequently, Bangladeshi villagers crossed onto Indian territory, and attacked BSF soldiers with sticks and sharp-edged weapons, the paramilitary force said.
Two jawans were seriously injured, and their weapons were snatched by the Bangladeshis.
BSF later called for a flag meeting with its Bangladeshi counterpart BGB to recover the weapons, and seek prevention of such incidents.

Union Minister of State for Home Nisith Pramanik's convoy faced a hail of stones after it was attacked allegedly by a TMC-backed mob in West Bengal's Cooch Behar on Saturday.&nbsp;
The mob attacked Pramanik's SUV with sticks and hurled stones damaging its windshield and making the minister run for his life. Pramanik is a MP from the area.
Footage shared by ANI shows Pramanik surrounded by supporters while a mob with sticks tries to break the barrier created by security personnel.&nbsp;
Speaking with the news agency, the minister slammed the ruling TMC and said "Democracy in the state has collapsed. If a minister is not safe in the state then just think of the common man's plight."

CM Mamata had recently criticised university authorities for accusing Nobel laureate Amartya Sen of occupying 0.13 acres of its land illegally. She also gave Sen some land documents, saying that no one can question him in the future.
"Allegations of land grabbing against him (Amartya Sen) are baseless. It is an attempt to tarnish his reputation. No one has the right to insult him. We won't tolerate it," Banerjee said as the economist sat beside her at his home.
The CM said her government would decide on the next course of legal action once she is back in Kolkata.

In a serious case of alleged negligence, several school children in West Bengal's Birbhum fell sick on 9 January 2023.
Around 30 students were rushed to hospital after eating mid-day meal food in which a snake was allegedly found. A school staffer reportedly claimed that the snake was found in a container with lentils.
All the students, except one, were discharged by the next day.
Meanwhile, the students' guardians allegedly vandalised a two-wheeler belonging to the school headmaster.
Block Development Officer Dipanjan Jana told reporters that complaints have been received from several villagers about children falling sick after eating the mid-day meal. "I have informed the district inspector of primary schools who will visit on January 10," Jana said.

Kolkata Police registered an FIR against state BJP president Sukanta Majumdar and 10 journalists for claiming that the second incident of stone-throwing on Vande Bharat Express took place in West Bengal giving the state a bad name, an officer said on Monday.
The incident had happened in Bihar when the Howrah-New Jalpaiguri semi-high-speed train was passing through that state on January 3.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee earlier said that legal action will be taken against those who spread "fake news" that the incident took place in this state.
"An FIR has been lodged against BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar and 10 journalists. The event actually had happened in Bihar. This has harmed West Bengal's reputation. Hence, they have been booked under specific sections of the Information Technology Act," the police officer told PTI.

Trinamool's campaign has been designed to cover six core sectors that are essential for the care and sustenance of human life and ensure that all residents can avail of benefits from the listed 15 welfare schemes of the state.

Claiming that 99 per cent of the people of West Bengal were covered by state government schemes, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday launched a new mass outreach campaign of Trinamool Congress to check if people get benefits from the projects.
Under the "Didir Suraksha Kavach" (Didi&rsquo;s Protective Shield) initiative, around 3.5 lakh volunteers of the ruling Trinamool Congress will reach out to approximately 10 crore people of the state in 60 days starting January 11.
The party also launched a mobile app, &lsquo;Didir Doot&rsquo; (Didi&rsquo;s messenger), to record feedback from beneficiaries of the projects ahead of the panchayat polls due this year.
"We have covered around 99 per cent of the people through our welfare schemes. &lsquo;Duare Sarkar&rsquo; has resolved many of the existing issues. The government will do its job, but some complaints have also been received at the party level,&rdquo; Banerjee told a press conference here.

&lsquo;Duare Sarkar&rsquo; is an initiative of the state government for delivery of specific schemes at the doorsteps of the people.
This "Didir Suraksha Kavach" initiative will help leaders connect with the people and hear their problems, she said.
"There is a possibility that some family members may not know how to apply. Our workers will assist them," she said.
The TMC boss, however, asserted that the campaign was not planned with an eye on the panchayat election but the Opposition parties criticised Banerjee over the new outreach programme, claiming that the ruling party is trying to fool people ahead of the panchayat polls.

The Vande Bharat Express connecting Howrah and New Jalpaiguri, the gateway to the northeast, as well as several development projects, was virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday.
Later, after a metro rail ride, Railway minister Vaishaw downplayed the incident while speaking with newspersons at Taratala and said the chief minister had been invited with "aadar" (affection) and "samman" (respect). The death of a person accused in the March 2022 Bogtui violence appears to be snowballing into a big controversy.
After accused Lalan Sheikh was found dead while in CBI custody, the West Bengal CID has reportedly been ordered to investigate the matter, and a murder case has been filed against CBI officials.
Lalan Sheikh was found hanging on 12 December 2022 in the washroom of the CBI's camp office in a guest house. The central agency claimed that he died by suicide.
Sheikh's family said that CBI officers had earlier threatened to kill him.
The central agency, however, rejected the allegations as "baseless".
The Birbhum district police had already started a probe into the custodial death of the accused person in the Bogtui massacre.
At least 10 people were killed in arson and violence that followed the murder of local Trinamool Congress leader Bhadu Sheikh on 21 March 2022. The CBI is investigating the case on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

The prime accused in the arson and violence in Bengal's Bogtui village, which had in March claimed at least 10 lives, was found hanging on Monday in a temporary office of the CBI, a source in the central agency said.
Lalan Sheikh, arrested earlier this month from a hideout along the Bengal-Jharkhand border, died by hanging himself with a 'gamcha' (thin cotton towel) in the washroom of the office that the agency has set up in a guest house in Rampurhat area of Birbhu, district, the source said.
His family members, however, alleged that his "death resulted from the torture" that he was subjected to in CBI custody.

Talking to PTI, the CBI source said, "Sheikh was found hanging in the washroom of the guest house, where we have set up our temporary camp, around 4.30 pm. The two investigating officers (IOs) of the case were in the court at that time.
"One CRPF constable was outside the washroom, but the accused, despite his presence, managed to die by suicide. We have informed the police and the National Human Rights Commission of India about the incident. All necessary procedures are being followed," the source said.
The accused, following his arrest, was initially remanded in CBI custody for six days, and it was later extended by three more days, the CBI source said.
Claiming that Sheikh was "severely beaten up" in CBI custody, family members of Sheikh have sought a probe into the matter.
"My brother was brought to our village a few days ago (as part of the probe) and he told us that CBI officers had been beating him up in custody. He was scared of dying. We want action against the CBI officers who are responsible for my brother's death," Sheikh&rsquo;s elder sister told reporters.
A senior police officer of Birbhum district, when contacted, said a probe will soon be initiated.
"The reason behind the death is still unclear. We were informed by the CBI about the death around 4.40 pm. We will look into the case," he told PTI.
Meanwhile, TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh, taunting opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, sought to know if this was the "big revelation" that he was talking about.
Adhikari had last week asked people to "wait and see what happens on December 12, 14 and 21", refusing to divulge further details.
"Suvendu had been saying that he will reveal something big on December 12. Is this the big thing he was talking about? Today an important person in the investigation died in CBI custody. There are many skilled officers in CBI. Why did it happen? Was the accused killed?" Ghosh said.
BJP leader Rahul Sinha also demanded a neutral investigation into the case.
"There must be an investigation. We want to know if there was any conspiracy involved to protect a bigger culprit behind the Bogtui massacre," Sinha told PTI.
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, too, demanded an answer from the CBI over the custodial death.
"The CBI took nine months to arrest the prime accused, and now he died in its custody. The CBI is answerable for this. There must be a judicial probe into the death. Is it a truly a suicide or a murder?" Chakraborty told PTI.
At least 10 people were killed in the arson and violence that followed the murder of local TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh on March 21. The CBI is probing the case on the orders of Calcutta High Court.&nbsp;

The man was admitted to the Neuro Medicine Department of the hospital with neurological disorders on 30 November.

The body of a 55-year-old patient was found hanging in a bathroom of the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in north Kolkata on Monday morning, police said.
Ramchandra Mondal, a resident of Habra in North 24 Parganas district, was admitted to the Neuro Medicine Department of the hospital with neurological disorders on November 30, as per officials.
His body was found, by other patients of the hospital, hanging from the ceiling of the bathroom around 7 am.
"We have learnt from the hospital authorities that the deceased was depressed since he was admitted there. It seems to be a case of suicide. We can only ascertain the exact cause of the death after getting the post-mortem report," a police officer said.
An investigation is underway.

As per the police, the blast was so powerful that the mud house with a thatched roof was blown off in the incident.

At least two people were killed and several others injured in a blast near the venue of senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee's scheduled rally in West Bengal's Purba Medinipur district, police said on Saturday.
The incident took place in Bhupatinagar area, only 1.5 km from Contai town where TMC national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is scheduled to address a public meeting on Saturday, a police officer said.
"The blast was reported in a house around 11.15 pm on Friday and two bodies were recovered on Saturday morning. A few others are injured.
"The cause of the blast is yet to be ascertained and further investigation is underway but the impact was so powerful that the mud house with a thatched roof was blown off in the incident," the senior police officer of Contain sub-division said, adding a forensic team has reached the spot to collect samples.
BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh held the TMC responsible for the incident and said that "only bomb-making industry is flourishing in the state".

Senior CPI (M) leader Sujan Chakraborty questioned why was Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee silent on such incidents and demanded a statement from her.
TMC state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said it is very easy for the opposition to blame the ruling party in West Bengal without any evidence.
