VVS Laxman, currently the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy has been among BCCI favourites to take up Team India's head coach role.&nbsp; His stint at the NCA ends in September and it remains to be seen how BCCI manages to retain him in the set-up. While BCCI secretary Jay Shah has clarified that they did not approach Ricky Ponting or Justin Langer for the job, their top contender remains Gautam Gambhir or any other senior Indian who knows the country's cricket system inside out.&nbsp;
Laxman seems to be the most obvious successor given that the stylish former from Hyderabad has been an interim India coach during his nearly three-year stint at NCA (National Cricket Academy).
But he hasn't applied for the post which will be both physically and mentally a taxing for next three and half years. The last date to submit applications is May 27.
Should he choose to apply, Laxman would be on strong footing owing to the goodwill he enjoys at the BCCI's High Performance Centre as the structural head of country's pathways cricket system (India A, Emerging, U-19, and junior women's cricket). A former BCCI office-bearer told PTI on conditions of anonymity, 'If he (Laxman) is not willing to work full-time, he can always be the consultant when India play marquee red-ball series in Australia this year and England next year.'
Recently, during a media interaction in Mumbai, Shah made it clear that there will be only one head coach for the national team. But there is a school of thought that Laxman's expertise in red-ball cricket could be put to use purely for the format.
If he does not accept the head coach's role, it is likely that Laxman will shift back to an IPL franchise along with commentating.&nbsp;

National Cricket Academy head VVS Laxman could be incharge of the Indian team for the five-match T20 International series against Australia, which will start within a week after the conclusion of the ODI World Cup.
Head coach Rahul Dravid's contract will run its course at the end of the World Cup and obviously the BCCI has the option of requesting the former India captain to reapply as the board will have to reinvite applications for the post following the norm.
It will be interesting to see if 51-year-old Dravid wants to continue as head coach of the national team, which involves extensive travelling and constant pressure. There is a possibility that Dravid, who has previously coached IPL teams like Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals, might return to the T20 league fold which has 10 teams.
But it is highly likely that Dravid, as well as the entire squad save Suryakumar Yadav, will be given much-needed rest after a gruelling campaign in which they had to travel more than 10,000 kms across the country.
"VVS Laxman has always been in charge when Rahul has taken a break and same thing is likely to continue for the series just after the World Cup," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
In case fresh applications are invited, Laxman could be a very strong candidate as BCCI has created a process, where the person in charge of NCA and knows the system and pathways inside out, is prepared for the role.
Most of the members in the T20 squad for the Australia series will comprise of players, who were part of the T20 series in the West Indies, Ireland and the Asian Games as the big boys like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah will be given a break to freshen up for the big ticket series against South Africa where India play three T20Is, as many ODIs and two Tests.
The five-match T20 series against Australia will begin in Visakhapatnam on November 23.&nbsp;

The BCCI brass will review India's underwhelming performance at the T20 World Cup with skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid on January 1, according to BCCI sources.
NCA chief VVS Laxman, who has been with the Indian team in Dravid's absence, is also expected to be part of the meeting.
England had hammered India by 10 wickets in the World Cup semi-finals, extending their barren run in ICC events since 2013 when they won the Champions Trophy.
'Head coach Rahul Dravid and NCA head VVS Laxman are expected to analyse India's performance with BCCI bosses. The roadmap going into 2023 World Cup is also expected to be discussed,' the BCCI source told PTI.

Samson could only play in 6 T20 International matches this year in which he scored 179 runs at a strike rate of 158. Further, the Kerala-based batter scored 284 runs at an average of 71 in 10 ODIs played this year.

Laxman also stated that India is blessed to have a strong depth of talent and bench strength. "It is about giving them opportunities and also informing them whenever they are not picked," the NCA chief further added.
Interestingly, Dravid himself was once in Laxman's shoes when the Indian Test team was in England with then head coach Ravi Shastri and Dravid performed this role for a Shikhar Dhawan-led side in a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka.

'All the players selected for the Ireland T20s are going home for a 3-day break and since some players are paying continuously since IPL, it is only fair that they spend some time at home, the BCCI official said. After the completion of their tour of Ireland, the selected Indian team will fly to London for the 3-T20I series against England which is set to begin from 7th July.
