Immediate relief extended to Poonch victims of cross-border shelling

Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch district rapidly responds to Pakistani shelling with financial aid, shelter setups, and service restorations, prioritizing community well-being and safety.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch on Thursday disbursed immediate relief and ex-gratia assistance from the district Red Cross fund to individuals and their families affected by Pakistani shelling, an official spokesperson said.
Thirteen people, including four children and two women, were killed and more than 40 injured in intense Pakistani shelling in Poonch district after Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border on Wednesday.
An ex-gratia amount of Rs 6 lakh each has been provided to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to those who sustained serious injuries and Rs 20,000 to individuals with minor injuries, the spokesperson said.
He said the relief has been extended in accordance with established norms to ensure timely support to the victims.
Poonch Deputy Commissioner Vikas Kundal reaffirmed the administration's commitment to public welfare and said all necessary assistance will continue for those affected.
The district administration is actively monitoring the situation and taking all measures to safeguard the wellbeing of the residents, he said.
Kundal also visited the district hospital to inquire about those injured in the shelling and admitted to the facility.
During his visit, the deputy commissioner interacted with the injured and expressed his heartfelt solidarity with the bereaved family members.
He assured them of comprehensive support and assistance from the administration amid this challenging time.
In a directive to the medical staff, Kundal emphasised the importance of providing the best possible treatment to the injured.
He also visited the blood bank to review the availability of blood and directed the staff there to ensure an adequate and uninterrupted supply to meet any emergency needs.
Later, the deputy commissioner visited the Government Polytechnic College Sathra, one of the nine designated shelter camps for the border residents of Mandi tehsil.
All necessary facilities, including food, power, water and sanitation, have been made available at the shelter camps, he said.
The deputy commissioner also convened a meeting to review the status of essential services and initiate measures to expedite the restoration of critical supply chains across this border district.
He directed the jal shakti and power development departments to ensure the restoration of water and electricity supplies within two hours in all affected areas, while the consumer affairs and public distribution department was asked to take immediate measures to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of ration, particularly in areas along the Line of Control (LoC).
The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all citizens, Kundal said.

Sri Lanka's Supreme Court on January 12, 2023 ordered ex-president Maithripala Sirisena and four top former officials to pay a total of 310 million rupees as compensation to the victims of the 2019 Easter attack for their negligence in preventing the country's one of the worst terror strikes despite having credible intel of an imminent attack.
In its verdict, a seven-member bench of the apex court ruled that the respondents named in the petitions for failing to prevent the 2019 Easter Sunday attack had violated the fundamental rights of the petitioners.
The court ordered the then president Sirisena, who was also defence minister and commander in chief of the armed forces, to pay a compensation of 100 million rupees (USD 273,300) from his personal fund.
It also ordered former police chief Pujith Jayasundara and former state intelligence services chief Nilantha Jayawardene to pay a compensation of 75 million rupees (USD 204,975) each, former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando to pay a compensation of 50 million rupees (USD 136,650) and former national intelligence service chief Sisira Mendis 10 million rupees (USD 27,330).
The court said top officials failed to act on the detailed intelligence information shared by India to avert the deadly suicide bombings.
They have been ordered to pay from their personal funds to the victim fund maintained by the office of reparations.
Nine suicide bombers belonging to local Islamist extremist group National Thawheed Jamaat (NTJ) linked to ISIS carried out a series of devastating blasts that tore through three Catholic churches and as many luxury hotels on April 21, 2019, killing nearly 270 people, including 11 Indians, and injuring over 500.

Almost 4 years later, the victim and her family are still living in fear. Despite police protection, they want a gun licence, and a house in a different location so they can live freely.
In October 2021, a local court had held 3 accused guilty, and acquitted 5 others, as per reports.

Speaking to editorji, the victim said, "We were given security cover 4 years ago. The Women's Commission had promised gun licence and another house. But that has not been provided yet. Police officials say that they will protect me and my mother, but not my father and brother, even if they get shot. I want a gun licence for my family's security."
The victim's father said, "Five of the culprits are from the same village. We come face-to-face with them multiple times. I want to shift my family somewhere else so that they are safe. Three of the culprits were punished. (inaudible) They say they will finish off our entire family since punishment for killing us will run in concurrence with their current jail term."

A shocking case has been reported at West Delhi's Rajouri Garden where a housemaid was allegedly assaulted by the couple on Sunday. According to the police the 48-year-old woman laboured as a house help and was beaten up by the accused couple who have chopped her hair as well, Police recorded the victim's statement.
A case has been registered under voluntarily causing hurt, wrongful confinement, and assault The victim is identified as Rajni who hails from Siliguri in West Bengal and works in Delhi as domestic help.
The placement agency owner reportedly said that the couple dropped Rajni at his office in very poor condition. After some time he noticed that she was lying in her urine and wasn't able to move. He immediately rushed to the Safdarjung hospital where Rajni claims on Sunday the couple dragged her out of her room and chopped off her hair. She had injuries all over her body, he added. Police said the medical examination report of Safdarjung Hospital asserted that she had suffered from “physical assault”, “head trauma, and was “vomiting”. She also had injuries on her eyes, face, limbs, abdomen along with other body parts.Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Ghanshyam Bansal said that all efforts are being made to arrest the accused couple.

Local teacher Ingebsorg Spangelo said she brought her students to visit the memorial where candles, flowers and stuffed animals had been laid in a central square.
