A battle between the world's richest person and the top court of South America's biggest country has left people in Brazil with a social media headache! Users of X, formerly known as Twitter, in Brazil are stuck with a reload message, unable to log into the platform. But why has X suddenly stopped working in the country?
The disruption has come after Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court ordered the platform to be taken down. The verdict was the outcome of a long-running legal battle over disinformation.
The ruling came after Elon Musk's X failed to comply with the court's order to name a new legal representative for the company in Brazil - a requirement X rejected as "illegal."
Moraes and Musk have been locked in a high-profile feud for months as the judge has vowed to fight disinformation and Musk claims the supremacy of free speech.
The standoff began when Justice Moraes ordered the suspension of several X accounts belonging to supporters of Brazil's former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro had tried to discredit the voting systems used during the country's 2022 elections, which he lost.
The tensions escalated when Justice Moraes slammed Elon Musk in a recent ruling. He said, and I quote, "Elon Musk demonstrated his total disrespect for Brazilian sovereignty and, in particular, the judiciary, positioning himself as a true supranational entity, immune to the laws of countries." - End of quote.
Musk, the richest person in the world, fired back with outrage. He labeled Moraes as an "evil dictator cosplaying as a judge" and accused him of "trying to destroy democracy in Brazil," - an accusation that Brazil's leftist president Luiz In&aacute;cio Lula da Silva refuted.
The reaction from Brazil's citizens has been mixed. A poll conducted by AtlasIntel showed that 50.9% of the respondents disagreed with the decision to suspend X, while 48.1% agreed with it.
However, on the public feud between Musk and Moraes, the majority sided with the judge and said that X should have complied with earlier orders.
To enforce the suspension, Brazil's Supreme Court has also imposed a daily fine of about 8,900 dollars on those using virtual private networks or VPNs to access X.
However, this part of the verdict hasn't gone down well with the citizens, with 64.5% of those polled by AtlasIntel opposing the move.
While the ban in Brazil is a setback for X, which has struggled for ads since Musk purchased the company, the platform is not new to such clashes.
The European Union is currently probing the company for violation of its content moderation law called the Digital Services Act &ndash; a decision in the matter, including possible fines, is expected soon.
In fact, when the European Union opened the probe, Musk had responded on X saying &ldquo;We look forward to a very public battle in court.&rdquo;

Elon Musk has recently indicated through an X post (formerly known as Twitter) that the company is in the process of incorporating audio and video calls on X. Even though the exact release date has not been disclosed, it is expected to be launched shortly.
<h3>Initiating Calls Without Phone Numbers</h3>
Upon its introduction, users will have the ability to make both audio and video calls to other X users from various devices including iPhone, Android smartphones, Mac, and Windows PC. Musk had previously alluded to this feature in an earlier post on X.
A distinct characteristic of this feature is that it does not necessitate the use of a phone number to initiate calls via the platform. It is likely that this functionality will be embedded within Twitter DMs, enabling users to directly initiate both audio and video calls with anyone on the platform.

Andrea Conway, a designer at X, shared a prototype of this feature in action back in July. Based on her post, it seems that the audio and video calling options will be accessible in the top right corner of the DM window, with the ability to toggle between them seamlessly.

At present, there is limited information regarding this upcoming feature. It remains uncertain how it will compare to competitors like Instagram and WhatsApp, whether it will support one-on-one or group calls, allow users to control who can call them, and whether it will be accessible to all users or only to those with a paid subscription.
<h3>Other New Features on X</h3>
Musk has also explored the possibility of enabling users to engage in stock and cryptocurrency trading directly through the platform. It was previously reported that Twitter had collaborated with eToro and TradingView to enable users to take prompt actions based on the information displayed in their timelines.
However, the gradual rollout of these features did not generate much enthusiasm among users. Contrary to these features, Musk's latest initiative does not depend on external variables and could potentially enhance engagement on the platform.
As mentioned by Musk, the platform will not require users to provide a phone number for registration. The X username will suffice for connecting with others, effectively converting the platform into a global address book.

Currently, X has a feature called Spaces that allows a large number of users to participate in an audio call. However, this does not support one-on-one calling, which the platform plans to introduce.

The lawsuit claims that Twitter promised that employees who would be let go will be given two months salary and other benefits as the severance package. However a large number of employees have not received the compensation yet.&nbsp;
Last week a similar case was filed in California seeking more than $500 million in severance payments for former Twitter employees. This lawsuit claims that the company violated federal regulations on employee benefit plans by failing to adhere to the terms of a severance plan established prior to Musk's acquisition.
As per a CNN report, former employees of Twitter Africa who were laid off as part of a global cost-cutting measure after Elon Musk&rsquo;s acquisition have not received any severance pay more than seven months since leaving the company. A former twitter Africa employee has told CNN that the company 'literally ghosted' them after layoffs.
However, Twitter's response to these allegations has been far from conventional. The company resorted for automated response with only a poop emoji for the inquiries by CNN. But, previously Twitter had claimed that all laid off employees had been properly compensated.

Anas Haqqani, a senior Taliban leader without an official portfolio, said late Monday that Twitter had "two important advantages" over other social media platforms following the launch of Meta-owned rival Threads.
"The first privilege is the freedom of speech. The second privilege is the public nature &amp; credibility of Twitter," he tweeted.
"Twitter doesn't have an intolerant policy like Meta. Other platforms cannot replace it."
The remarks drew an angry reaction from some users, who noted the Taliban government did not allow its own citizens the same rights.
The Taliban had a low-key presence on social media until they stormed back to power in August 2021. Before that, many of their accounts -- and those of sympathisers -- were frequently blocked as fast as they were created.
Now the government uses Twitter as a major vehicle for announcements, and most ministries and provincial departments have official accounts, although none appear to have paid for a blue tick since Twitter scrapped its verification system earlier this year.

Social media observers say accounts with the name "Taliban", "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" or featuring the movement's distinctive flag rarely last long.
Last year Facebook shuttered the pages of state-owned Radio Television Afghanistan and Bakhtar News Agency, saying at the time it was complying with laws in the United States listing the Taliban as a "terrorist organisation".
Under Musk, who bought Twitter last year, bans on tens of thousands of accounts -- including former US president Donald Trump -- were swiftly reversed.

Threads went live on Apple and Android app stores in 100 countries late on Wednesday, though it is not available in Europe because parent company Meta is unsure how to navigate the European Union's data privacy legislation.
Twitter is thought to have around 200 million regular users but it has suffered repeated technical failures since Elon Musk bought the platform last year and sacked thousands of staff.
Musk, who also serves as the boss of Tesla and SpaceX, has also alienated many users by introducing charges for previously free services and allowing banned right-wing accounts back on the platform.
Several rivals have emerged but most are niche platforms without the capacity to grow at the necessary scale to dethrone Twitter.

The High Court of Karnataka on Friday dismissed a petition filed by Twitter Inc., challenging several blocking and take-down orders issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, saying the company's plea was devoid of merits.
The single-judge bench of Justice Krishna S Dixit which dictated the operative portion of the judgement also imposed a cost of Rs 50 lakh on Twitter and ordered it to be paid to the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority within 45 days.
Twitter had challenged ten different 'blocking orders' issued by the Ministry between February 2, 2021 and February 28, 2022. The Government had directed the microblogging site to block 1,474 accounts, 175 tweets, 256 URLs and one hashtag, Twitter had claimed before the court while only challenging the orders pertaining to 39 of these URLs.
The Ministry had issued the orders under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act. Twitter, in its petition, had however, claimed that the orders "fall foul of Section 69A both substantially and procedurally."
Twitter had claimed that as per 69A, the account holders had to be informed about taking down their tweets and accounts, but no notice was issued by the Ministry to these account holders.
The Government issued notices to the Compliance Officer of Twitter on June 4, 2022 and again on June 6, 2022 to appear before it and explain why the Blocking Orders were not carried out and why action should not be initiated against it.
Twitter replied on June 9 that the content against which it had not followed the blocking orders does not seem to be a violation of Section 69A. On June 27, 2022 the Government issued another notice stating Twitter was violating its directions. On June 29, Twitter replied asking the Government to reconsider the direction on the basis of the doctrine of proportionality.
On June 30, 2022 the Government withdrew blocking orders on 10 account-level URLs but gave an additional list of 27 URLs to be blocked. On July one, 10 more accounts were blocked. Compiling the orders "under protest," Twitter approached the HC with the petition challenging the orders.
Justice Dixit had completed hearing the arguments and reserved the judgement on April 21, 2023. The operative portion of the judgement was pronounced in the court on June 30.&nbsp;

Yaccarino, with her extensive background in advertising and a proven track record of success is now hoping to lead Twitter into a new era of growth and transformation. She was previously with NBCUniversal and held the position of leading global ad sales. Her primary objective is to rebuild Twitter's advertising business that had seen a lot of challenges since Musk took over the company. In November last year, Fidelity lowered the value of its Twitter holding to 44% of the original acquisition price. Further mark downs came in December and February.&nbsp;
Musk has admitted that the $44 billion price tag he paid for Twitter, which included $33.5 billion in equity, was excessive. He recently said that Twitter is now only worth about 50% of what he spent on it.&nbsp;
As per a Bloomberg report, it&rsquo;s unclear how Fidelity arrived at its new, lower valuation or whether it receives any non-public information from the company.
The report also says that Musk&rsquo;s investment in Twitter is now worth $8.8 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, which uses Fidelity&rsquo;s valuation to calculate the value of his holding. Musk spent more than $25 billion to acquire an estimated 79% stake in the company last year.
Since Musk took over, Twitter has faced financial difficulties. Selling Twitter Blue subscriptions has also been an unsuccessful attempt to recover that money. Less than 1% of Twitter's monthly users had signed up by the end of March.
