India reported 34,113 new Covid-19 cases and 346 related deaths in the last 24 hours ending 8 AM, Monday, as per data released by Union Health Ministry.
After close to 3.5 lakh Covid cases being reported daily between January 20-26, the cases have dipped under 40,000 per day. However, it is necessary to closely analyse and see if the cases have dropped due to less testing or there has been a general decline in the spread of the virus.
Active cases amount to 1.12% of total cases and stood at 4,78,882. On Sunday, the country's active cases stood at the 5 lakh mark. 
There was a marginal increase reported in the daily positivity rate at 3.19% in comparison to Sunday's 3.17%. However, the weekly positivity rate climbed down to 3.99% from Sunday's 4.46%.

346 fatalities were reported in the past 24 hours, taking the total toll to 5,09,011 deaths. On a better note, 91,930 patients were discharged as per Union Health Ministry's data and the daily recovery rate was recorded to be 97.68%. 4.16 crore patients have recovered so far. 
India also vaccinated nearly 12 lakh individuals in a span of 24 hours and total jabs administered till date are 172.9 crore.
As India continues to report lower cases each day, five states currently have more than 10 districts with a positivity rate of more than 10 per cent: Rajasthan (17), Kerala (14), and Maharashtra, Arunachal Pradesh, and Mizoram (11 each).

The prediction for Mumbai is slightly better with daily cases around 30,000 to 60,000, and hospital bed requirement at 10,000.
This model has been developed by experts from IIT Kanpur and Hyderabad, the Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute, and the Maharashtra University of Health Sciences.

IIT Kanpur professor Manindra Agrawal has predicted that a mild Covid-19 third wave is likely to peak in India between January and February next year.&nbsp;
In contrast to a South African research study, Agrawal said that Omicron does not seem to be bypassing natural immunity from Covid-19 in any significant way.&nbsp;&nbsp;
He said that there is no need to panic about the new variant but citizens must remain careful.&nbsp;
Agrawal also&nbsp;said that the Omicron variant is not leading to critical cases but only mild infection. The data gathered so far suggests that the variant has only mild symptoms, even as its transmissibility appears to be high.&nbsp;
Recommending the&nbsp;mild lockdown&nbsp;including night curfew, restrictions on crowding to&nbsp;control the spread of the virus and reduce the peak value, he said that&nbsp;the third&nbsp;wave in the country is nearly certain; however, how bad it will get will depend on how the government tackles it.&nbsp;&nbsp;

She further added that Minister Nitin Raut had said that the third wave has come in Nagpur.
Her office also issued a press statement saying what she meant was that the third wave of Covid-19 was on the "threshold of Mumbai".
In the first six days of September, Mumbai had recorded over 28% of the total Covid-19 cases that it had reported during the entire last month, as per civic data.
The spike has left the Mumbai civic body BMC officials worried ahead of the festive season beginning on September 10 with the 'Ganesh Chaturthi'.

The daily positivity rate was recorded at 2.66%. It has been less than 3% for the last 33 days. The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.19%.

Delhi has put into force a graded action plan to manage surge in Covid-19 cases in the coming days amid a fear of the third wave. &nbsp;The action plan lays down separate guidelines for four levels of severity that are marked by different colour codes. It came into effect on Sunday.
According to the action plan, a yellow alert will mark Level 1 of severity, while level 4 will flag the red alert. In between there is the amber alert for level 2 and orange alert for level 3 of severity.
Positivity rate, spike in single day cases and occupancy of oxygen beds will determine the level of severity.
Availability of services, public transport, working hours for shops, markets, malls and restaurants, need for weekend or night curfew, organization of events and cap at number of people in public places will all be determined by the severity level.
Under the red alert the city will be placed under complete curfew.
Under every alert, schools, colleges and other educational institutions will remain shut. Cinema halls, banquet halls, auditoriums, salons, spas, gyms and yoga centres, and entertainment parks will also stay closed. Religious places will be allowed to open but devotees would not be permitted to visit them.
