A centuries-old Hindu temple, which has been waiting for the consecration of its new idol for years, and the Muslim community in the neighbourhood, who generously contribute to its renovation. It may sound filmy, but it is a real 'Kerala story' of communal harmony from a nondescript village in Muslim-dominated Malappuram district.
Amidst fictitious stories and hate campaigns -- including the film by Sudipto Sen named 'The Kerala Story', which has been criticised as propaganda -- Hindus and Muslims have joined hands for the renovation of Sree Durga Bhagavathy Temple, a 400-year-old shrine located at Muthuvallur in Kondotty.
The temple authorities here said that half of the nearly Rs 50 lakh cost so far spent for the renovation was contributed by generous members of the Muslim community.
The first phase of the renovation was almost complete and the consecration of the 173-cm-tall idol of Goddess Durga would be held in a three-day-long ceremony beginning on May 7.
Chandran P, president of the management committee of the temple, which comes under the state-run Malabar Devaswom Board, said the renovation of the shrine began in 2015.
"We have requested contributions from people beyond the religious and communal divide...Several people contributed immensely, and I am happy to say that Muslims have contributed a major chunk of it," he told PTI.
Chandran happily recalled how Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) supremo Sadique Ali Shihab Thangal and senior party leaders like P K Kunhalikutty responded positively to their request for contributions and extended all support for the renovation of the shrine.
Thangal even visited the shrine during a function organised there last year to raise money.
Temple tantri Thekkiniyedath Tharananellur Padmanabhan Unni Namboothiripad submitted a 'patrika', a message of love, to Kunhalikutty during a function held at the shrine in March this year.
As IUML MLA Kunhalikutty couldn't attend the function due to some other programmes, the temple committee members handed over the patrika to him at his residence later, Chandran said.
A Muslim man readily donated Rs 2 lakh while another person of the community contributed Rs 1 lakh for the renovation works, he said.
"This is the eighth year of the renovation works at the shrine. A huge idol of the goddess is installed as part of the consecration. The construction of the four sub-temples have already been completed at the temple which sprawls on an one and half acres of land," he said.
The brochure released by the temple authorities in connection with the consecration also stands as a unique example of communal harmony as it prominently features a photo of Thangal along with the tantri.
"It is a place where all communities, including Hindus, Muslims and Christians, live together happily and unitedly. No venomous propaganda or hate campaign can break this long tradition of harmony," the temple official said.
Even the temple organised "nombu thura" (breaking the fast) for Muslims on its premises during Ramzan and the Hindu community members also happily took part in it, he added.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan Thursday condemned the Doordarshan's decision to telecast "The Kerala Story" and asked the public broadcaster to withdraw from screening the controversial movie, saying it would only "exacerbate communal tensions" ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.
He also asked the national broadcaster not to become a "propaganda machine" for the BJP and the RSS.
"The decision by @DDNational to broadcast the film 'Kerala Story', which incites polarisation, is highly condemnable. The national news broadcaster should not become a propaganda machine of the BJP-RSS combine and withdraw from screening a film that only seeks to exacerbate communal tensions ahead of the general elections.
"Kerala will remain steadfast in opposing such malicious attempts to sow hatred," Vijayan said in a post on X.
Doordarshan has announced that the movie will be broadcast on April 5.
In a statement, the ruling CPI(M) also asked the public broadcaster to withdraw its decision to telecast the movie.
The party asked it not to stand with the "BJP's attempt to polarise" the secular Kerala society.
The state secretariat of the CPI(M) alleged that the BJP decided to screen the controversial movie as the general elections are nearing, hoping to advance their political agenda since the saffron party was unable to make inroads in Kerala society.
"This amounts to challenging Kerala. Kerala had witnessed strong protests when it was released. The censor board itself had removed 10 scenes from the movie," CPI(M) said.
A public sector broadcast service should not stand with the "BJP's attempt to polarise" the secular Kerala society, it said.
The Kerala High Court had last year refused to stay the release of the film, stating that the movie trailer does not contain anything offensive to any particular community as a whole.
The court had said that the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had examined the movie and found that it is suitable for public exhibition.
The movie's trailer was severely criticised and challenged before the court for "falsely" claiming that 32,000 women from Kerala got converted and radicalised and were deployed in terror missions both in India and the world.
The BJP had alleged that there was an unofficial ban on the movie in the theatres of the state.
Strong protest was held by the CPI(M) and the Congress against the movie when it was released in 2023.

According to the makers, the film will be based on a &lsquo;true incident&rsquo; and it will hit the screens on April 5, 2024.
Vipul Shah&rsquo;s Sunshine Pictures, the banner behind the upcoming movie, shared the announcement on social media.

&lsquo;The Kerala Story&rsquo; depicted how women from Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and were recruited by the terror group Islamic State (IS).
The film, directed by Sudipto Sen and produced by Vipul Shah, was released on May 5.
The movie emerged as one of the most successful films at the box office with over Rs 200 crore in reported earnings.
However, it was banned by the West Bengal government, fearing tensions among communities.
Theatres in Tamil Nadu also decided to stop the screening, citing the law and order situation and a poor audience turnout.
&lsquo;The Kerala Story; also received tax-free status in BJP-ruled states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Haryana.
Besides Adah Sharma, &lsquo;The Kerala Story&rsquo; also starred Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani, and Siddhi Idnani.

The Supreme Court on Thursday stayed the West Bengal government's order banning the screening of the film "The Kerala Story" and asked Tamil Nadu to ensure the safety of moviegoers after theatre owners decided to stop screening the film due to security concerns.
A bench headed by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud also directed the producer to put a disclaimer in the movie by 5 pm on May 20 on the claim that 32,000 Hindu and Christian women were converted to Islam.
According to the apex court, the disclaimer should say that &ldquo;there is no authenticated data to back up the suggestion on the figure of conversion and the film represents the fictionalised version&rdquo;.

The Supreme Court on Friday sought replies from the West Bengal and Tamil Nadu governments on a plea of the producers of "The Kerala Story" challenging the ban in the two states.
A bench of Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha questioned the West Bengal government saying the film is being screened in the rest of the country without any problem and there appears to be no reason for the ban.
"Movie is running in the rest of the country including in states having similar demographic composition and nothing has happened. This has nothing to do with the artistic value of the film. If people do not like the movie, they will not watch the movie," the bench told senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, appearing for the West Bengal government.
Singhvi said according to intelligence inputs, there may be a situation of law and order problem and peace among different communities may be breached.
The bench also asked the Tamil Nadu government to specify measures taken to provide adequate security to theatres screening "The Kerala Story".
"The state government cannot say that it will look the other way when theatres are attacked and chairs are being burnt," the bench told advocate Amit Anand Tiwari, appearing for the Tamil Nadu government, after he submitted that there is no ban on the movie.
Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for producers of the movie, said there is de facto ban in Tamil Nadu as theatres screening the movie are being threatened and they have dropped the screenings.
"For West Bengal, we are seeking quashing of the ban order," he said.
"We are issuing notices to both the states and they may file their response by Wednesday. We will take up the matter on Thursday," the bench said.
"The Kerala Story", starring Adah Sharma, was released in cinemas on May 5. Directed by Sudipto Sen, the film claims women from Kerala were forced to convert to Islam and recruited by the terror group Islamic State(IS).&nbsp;

Speaking with The Times of India, Shatrughan Sinha he has always been a firm believer in the freedom of expression, &lsquo;but not at the cost of a state&rsquo;s law and order&rsquo;. He said that if a film poses such a threat, then freedom of expression should be &lsquo;curbed&rsquo;.
He further described Mamata as a &lsquo;far-sighted leader&rsquo; and said that if she has imposed a ban on the film, she must have a valid reason.
&lsquo;The Kerala Story&rsquo; has been embroiled in controversy ever since the release of its trailer. The movie initially claimed that 32,000 women from Kerala had gone missing and joined the terrorist group ISIS. However, after facing protests, the figure in the trailer was withdrawn and changed to a story of three women from Kerala.
Mamata Banerjee&rsquo;s West Bengal government has banned the film, while the film has been declared tax-free in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Haryana.
