Indian consumers are set to incur an additional 47,500 crore rupees annually due to tariff hikes by the country's top three telecom operators, according to a Kotak Institutional Equities research note cited by the Economic Times. This increase aims to monetize new 5G services and end the price war that began in 2016. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in a report has revealed that there has only been a modest increase of 0.19% in wireless subscribers in India. The mobile users in India&nbsp; increased, reaching a total of 1160.71 million by the end of January 2024 as against 1158.49 million at the end of December 2023.
Across both wireless and wireline services during the month, the total telephone subscriber base increased to 1193.25 million in India as of January 2024, with net additions of 2.92 million subscribers.
<h3>Increase in mobile users</h3>
Among all the telecommunication companies, Reliance Jio has topped by adding 41.78 lakh (4.178 million) mobile subscribers, according to the latest figures from TRAI. With this, Jio's total mobile user base is increased to 46.39 crore.&nbsp;
Bharti Airtel followed Jio and added 7.52 lakh wireless users in January. This growth elevated Airtel's mobile subscriber tally to 38.24 crore. Meanwhile, Vodafone Idea lost subscribers with the numbers going down by 15.2 lakh wireless subscribers during the same time. The reduction in numbers brought its mobile subscriber base down to 22.15 crore

The wireless mobile users also went up in urban areas to 633.96 million in January, slightly up from 633.44 million in December. Likewise, rural areas also saw an increase from 525.05 million to 526.75 million. In January, 12.36 million mobile number portability requests were submitted.
Private access service providers accounted for 92.01% of the wireless market share, while BSNL and MTNL, the two public sector units, held a combined market share of just 7.99%.

People will be able to block and track their lost or stolen mobile phones across India with the rollout of a tracking system by the government this week, a senior government official said.
Technology development body Centre for Department of Telematics (CDoT) has been running the pilot of the Central Equipment Identity Registry (CEIR) system in some of the telecom circles, including Delhi, Maharashtra, Karnataka, and North East region, and the system is now ready for pan-India deployment, a DoT official, who did not wish to be identified, told PTI.
"CEIR system is scheduled for pan-India launch on May 17," the official said.
When contacted, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Project Board at CDoT Rajkumar Upadhyay did not confirm the date but confirmed that the technology is ready for pan-India deployment.
"The system is ready and now it will be deployed across India in this quarter. This will enable people to block and track their lost mobile phones," Upadhyay said.
CDoT has been able to add features to check the use of cloned mobile phones across all telecom networks.
The government has made it mandatory to disclose IMEI -- a 15-digit unique numeric identifier -- of mobile devices before their sale in India.
The mobile networks will have access to the list of approved IMEI numbers which will check the entry of any unauthorised mobile phones on their network.
Telecom operators and CEIR system will have visibility into IMEI number of the device and mobile number linked to it, and the information is being used in some states to track your lost or stolen mobiles through CEIR.
Recently, Karnataka Police recovered and handed over more than 2,500 lost mobile phones to their owners using the CEIR system.
Apple already has a system to track lost mobile phones with the help of Apple ID but major issues have been around Android mobile phones.
With the new system in place, it will be futile to use stolen mobile phones.

Shares of Vodafone-Idea spiked more than 20% after the government agreed to convert over 16,000 crore worth of AGR interest dues into equity. On Friday, in a filing with the Bombay Stock Exchange, the telecom company said that the Centre had directed it to issue shares worth Rs 16,133 crore at an issue price of Rs 10 per share.&nbsp;
What does this mean?&nbsp; Post conversion of Vodafone-Idea&rsquo;s Rs 16,133 crore dues to the govt, into equity, the govt of India will have around 33% stake in the telecom company, making it the single largest shareholder. The promoters&rsquo; stake will come down to about 50% from nearly 75%.&nbsp; At a press conference, FM Nirmala Sithraman made it clear that the govt is not bearing Vodafone-Idea&rsquo;s debts. She said, &ldquo;The company is not in the position of giving the dues to the govt. That&rsquo;s why we are taking the company&rsquo;s shares. This means we are shareholders in the company. When the company will gain profit, we will also get the profit.&rdquo; The govt has also clarified that it will not be part of the company&rsquo;s management, nor will it have any representative on the board.&nbsp;
Why did Vodafone-Idea need this?&nbsp; The telecom company is reeling under a massive debt of about Rs 2.2 lakh crore, which includes around 1.5 lakh crore of AGR dues (usage and license fee that the Department of Telecommunications charges to telecom operations), as well as dues to banks, which stands at around Rs 15,000 crore. Without the govt stepping in to help the cash-strapped telecom company, there was a realistic possibility of the company going bankrupt and collapsing.&nbsp; The telecom company had been awaiting this ever since the govt announced a relief package for the telecom sector in September 2021, which allowed for conversion on deferred AGR dues owed to the govt, into equity.&nbsp;
Why did the govt agree to this?&nbsp; The govt agreed to this conversion of dues into equity, after receiving an assurance from the company that they were committed to the company and would bring in the necessary funds. Union Minister of Communications, Ashwini Vaishnaw said, &ldquo;We had sought a firm commitment that the Aditya Birla Group would run the company and bring necessary investments. Birlas have agreed and hence we have agreed to convert. We want India to be a three-player market plus BSNL and ensure healthy competition for consumers. &nbsp;
Aside from protecting its own dues and the thousands of crores owed to banks, the govt also wanted to avoid a duopoly. If Vodafone-Idea collapsed under its debt burden, it would mean that just two players, Jio and Airtel would own the giant&rsquo;s share of the market. This may prove to be unfair to consumers, as without a third player to keep the balance, two players could drive market prices.&nbsp;
Does this solve Vodafone-Idea&rsquo;s debt troubles?&nbsp; Analysts believe that this move will only solve part of the problem. The total debt of the company is over Rs 2 lakh crore. The AGR dues to the govt alone is around Rs 1.5 lakh crore. This move is a conversion of only the interest dues on AGR which is around Rs 16,000 crore. Rohan Dhamija of Analysys Mason tells Economic Times, &ldquo;VI needs around Rs 45,000 crore fresh equity infusion to bolster its 4G operations and roll out 5G networks to sustain and compete effectively with Jio and Airtel. Raising additional debt via fresh loans would further strain its already weak balance sheet&rdquo;. However, experts are of the view, that this is a big step in the right direction to help get the company back on its feet. With the govt sending out this strong message that it is behind Vodafone-Idea and is taking strong and decisive steps to make sure the company doesn&rsquo;t collapse, investors will be more confident and encouraged to infuse capital into the company. With this, the company may be able to repay some part of its dues to its vendors as well as infuse money towards its 4G operations.&nbsp;

Reliance Jio has revamped its Rs 98 plan and introduced a new Rs 119 plan with some additional features.
This would be the cheapest prepaid plan from Reliance Jio that will offer 1.5 GB of internet per day. With all the changes, the plan validity has also been reduced from 28 days to 14 days.

This would be the cheapest prepaid plan from Reliance Jio&nbsp;that will offer 1.5 GB of internet&nbsp;per day. With all the changes, the plan validity has also been reduced from 28 days to 14 days.
This bundling makes it the most affordable data pack in this category. Reliance revised its prepaid tariffs starting December 1 making the entire structure costly by a minimum of 21 percent.

Bharti Airtel is one a move as the stock has been hitting a new life time high for the last three sessions.
At nearly Rs 4 lakh crore, Bharti Airtel today has surpassed state-owned banking giant State Bank of India (SBI) in market-cap ranking. SBI market-cap stood at Rs 3.88 lakh crore, the BSE data shows.
Scrips of Bharti Airtel moved over 3% to Rs 717 level on Tuesday. The stock has gained more than 40% this year.
