In a blistering critique, RJD leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav accused Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar of squandering a staggering ₹2.25 billion over just 15 days on promoting his image while the state grapples with severe governance issues. Yadav released a press statement on Tuesday, lambasting Kumar for what he termed as "wasteful spending" of public funds amid rampant unemployment, inflation, and corruption in the state.
Highlighting the alleged misuse of taxpayer money, Yadav claimed that the Bihar government is prioritizing propaganda over addressing the pressing needs of its citizens. "For 20 years, Bihar has been thrown into the flames of wild unemployment, mass exodus, murderous inflation, rampant crime, and institutional corruption by Nitish Kumar&rsquo;s wasteful spending spree," Yadav asserted.

The RJD leader questioned the state&rsquo;s priorities, alleging that students and women are being denied basic facilities while funds are being diverted for self-promotion. "There is nothing on the ground for students and women, but billions of rupees are being looted by officials for propaganda," he said.
Yadav also criticized the government&rsquo;s claims of progress, particularly the implementation of smart meters, as an attempt to mask administrative failures. He pointed to various issues, including widespread corruption, crumbling infrastructure, rising crime, unemployment, and the failure of the state's prohibition policy.
"The pain of livelihoods, hundreds of bridges destroyed due to corruption, uncontrolled crime, unbridled inflation, record-breaking unemployment, administrative chaos, and injustice cannot be concealed," he stated.
Tejashwi accused the government of indulging in what he described as an "election picnic" while the state's citizens suffer. "Nitish Kumar is spending ₹2.25 billion on dialogue around 'zero issues' instead of addressing the real problems plaguing the state," Yadav remarked, adding that the move reflects misplaced priorities and disregard for the welfare of the people.

After Patna High Court on Thursday set aside the state government's amendments to increase the reservation for Backward Classes, extremely Backward Classes, Scheduled Tribes, and Scheduled Castes in jobs and educational institutions, RJD&nbsp; leader Tejashwi Yadav targeted BJP and said the party has always been against reservation and tried its best to stop caste-based census.
While speaking with ANI, Yadav said, "We increased the reservation for the most backward, Dalits, tribals and backward society. At that time also, we had requested the Government of India to put it in Schedule 9... Some people of BJP always want to stop such work by filing PILs and the caste-based census was also stopped in the same way."
Stepping up his attacks on the BJP, Yadav said, "The people of BJP have always been against reservation. We had not only doubts but full confidence that these people would try to stop and end the increase in reservations for Dalits, tribals, backward and most backward classes. These people had also tried their best to stop the aste-based survey of our government at every level."
The RJD leader further added, "We are hurt by this and this work was done very impartially. We had given the reservation to the ones who deserved it. We had also requested to include it in Schedule 9 in the Eastern Zonal Council meeting held on 10 December 2023 in Patna under the chairmanship of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, but even after six months, the BJP government did not do so. This shows that the BJP is against caste census and reservation. We continued to demand this in the Lok Sabha elections."
Yadav also targeted the JDU party headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and criticised it for remaining silent on the issue. "I don't know why the JDU people and Nitish Kumar are silent. If the Bihar government does not go to the Supreme Court, then the Rashtriya Janata Dal will go to the Supreme Court."
Notably, a division bench of Chief Justice K Vinod Chandran and Justice Harish Kumar set aside the Bihar Reservation of Vacancies in Posts and Services (Amendment) Act, 2023, and The Bihar Reservation Act, 2023 as ultra vires and violative of the equality clauses under Articles 14, 15 and 16.
The Bihar legislature had in 2023 amended both Acts and increased the reservation from 50 per cent to 65 per cent in jobs and higher educational institutions.&nbsp;
Based on the findings of the caste survey in the state, the state government increased the quota for SC to 20 per cent, Scheduled Tribes to two per cent, Extremely Backward Classes to 25 per cent, and Backward Class to 18 per cent.
With the enactments, Bihar has one the highest reservation percentage among larger states, reaching a total of 75 per cent. This includes a 10 per cent quota for the economically weaker section (EWS) among the upper castes.&nbsp;

A 50-year-old home guard was killed when a police vehicle escorting RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav collided head-on with a car in Bihar's Purnea district, a senior official said on Monday.
According to Purnea SP Upendra Nath Verma, six personnel of Bihar Military Police (BMP), who were in the same police jeep, were also injured in the accident late Monday night.
"Tejashwi Yadav, the former deputy chief minister and the leader of the opposition, was passing through the district, on his way to Katihar. As per protocol, we had sent a vehicle from the police lines to escort him," the superintendent of police said.
The police jeep, while trying to keep pace with Yadav's vehicle, "ended up on the wrong side of the Purnea-Katihar road and crashed into a car coming from the opposite side. Home guard Mohd Halim who was driving the vehicle, died on the spot", the SP said.
Notably, Yadav is touring the state as part of "Jan Vishwas Yatra".
The injured BMP jawans were admitted to the government medical college at Purnea where their condition was said to be out of danger, the police official said.
The occupants of the car received minor injuries as airbags installed in their vehicle minimised the impact of the crash.

The chief minister had moved a confidence motion after he brokes ties with the RJD and joined hands with the BJP.&nbsp;

The Bihar assembly on Monday passed a resolution for the removal of RJD leader Awadh Bihari Chaudhary as the Speaker of the House, ahead of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led NDA government's trust vote.
Chaudhary, who had refused to step down despite his party losing power a fortnight ago, was removed with 125 members of the 243-strong assembly voting in favour of the no-confidence motion moved against him by the ruling NDA.
Only 112 members voted against the motion.
Earlier, Deputy Speaker Maheshwar Hazari, who was in the Chair, had sought to declare the no-confidence motion as passed through voice vote, but agreed to a headcount following vociferous protests from the RJD.
A new Speaker is likely to be elected by the House after the completion of the government's trust vote.&nbsp;
The NDA, which includes JD(U), BJP, former chief minister Jitan Ram Manjhi&rsquo;s Hindustani Awam Morcha and an Independent, has a combined strength of 128 MLAs in the 243-strong assembly, six more than the majority mark.
The 'Mahagathbandhan' has a combined strength of 114 MLAs, eight short of the majority mark, but claims that while all its legislators were firmly intact, quite a few in the NDA camp were unhappy over the sudden change of tack by JD(U) and BJP and might turn the tables on the new government.
In a show of solidarity, notwithstanding the sudden loss of power, a number of legislators belonging to the 'Mahagathbandhan', which comprises RJD, Congress, CPI(ML), CPI and CPI(M), have been staying at the residence of the coalition&rsquo;s leader Tejashwi Yadav, who lost the deputy CM&rsquo;s post as a result of Kumar&rsquo;s abrupt parting of ways.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, whose party on Sunday lost power following Nitish Kumar's latest volte-face, claimed that the latter's JD(U) will be "finished in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls".
The former deputy chief minister described his ex-boss as a "respectable" but "tired" leader and warned the BJP, which has teamed up with the JD(U) chief, that the septuagenarian did not like to share "credit" with allies.
"Nitish Kumar seems to have a problem with me getting the credit for many achievements of our government. It should ring alarm bells for the BJP," remarked Yadav.
"Nitishji is a respectable leader. He used to mock me when I was in the opposition for promising 10 lakh jobs during the 2020 state elections. I made him work in that direction", said the young leader.
He added, "whatever may be the excuses Nitish ji makes for switching sides, his JD(U) is all set to be finished (khatam hone wala hai) in Lok Sabha polls".
Yadav, who is RJD supremo Lalu Prasad's younger son, became the deputy CM in August, 2022, when Kumar had severed ties with the BJP and joined the Mahagathbandhan.&nbsp;

"It is wrong if someone misinterprets it. The statement of the CM was regarding sex education. People are hesitant whenever the topic of sex education is discussed...This is now taught in schools. Science and biology are taught in schools. Children learn it. He said what should be done practically to stop the increase in population...This should not be taken in a wrong manner. It should be taken as a sex education," said Yadav.
Meanwhile, BJP MLA Nikki Hembrom slammed Kumar for his comments.
"What he said could have been stated in a dignified manner. But (Nitish Kumar) is insensitive in matters related to women. He has no respect for women," said Hembrom.
