The Defence Ministry has inked a Rs 62,370 crore contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to procure 97 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

The defence ministry on Thursday sealed a Rs 62,370 crore deal with the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) to procure 97 Tejas light combat aircraft for the Indian Air Force.
The signing of the contract came over a month after the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi green-lighted the mega procurement.
It is the second such contract awarded to the state-run aerospace behemoth.
In February 2021, the defence ministry sealed a Rs 48,000 crore deal with HAL for procurement of 83 Tejas MK-1A jets for the IAF.
A contract was signed with the HAL for 97 Tejas Light Combat Aircraft- Mk1A with associated equipment for the IAF at a cost of Rs 62,370 crore (excluding taxes), the ministry said.
The advanced jet will feature Swayam Raksha Kavach and control actuators, with over 64 per cent indigenous content and 67 new indigenous items, it said.
The deliveries will start in 2027-28, it said.
The single-engine Mk-1A will be a replacement for the IAF's MiG-21 fighters.
The IAF is looking at inducting the warplanes as the number of its fighter squadrons have gone down to 31 from officially sanctioned strength of 42.
Tejas is a multi-role fighter aircraft capable of operating in high-threat air environments.It has been designed to undertake air defence, maritime reconnaissance and strike roles.&nbsp;

India's indigenous fight aircraft Tejas Mark 1A successfully completed its maiden flight in Bengaluru on Thursday.&nbsp; The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited said that the flight was airborne for 15 minutes.
"First flight of the Made in India indigenous LCA Mark 1A fighter aircraft has been completed in Bengaluru by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited today," HAL said, according to ANI news agency.
"The aircraft was airborne for 15 minutes during its first flight," it added.
Tejas Mark 1A is an indigenously designed, developed, and manufactured fighter aircraft with more than 65 per cent indigenous components. It is the advanced variant of LCA Mark 1, which has currently been inducted by the Indian Air Force.&nbsp;
According to an India Today report, the fighter aircraft is likely to be deployed at Nal airbase in Rajasthan&rsquo;s Bikaner near the Pakistan border. The first squadron of aircraft is planned to be deployed at the Nal airbase from where it can take care of the western adversary.
A Times of India report stated that the Mk-1A will come with digital radar warning receivers, a superior AESA (active electronically scanned array) radar, advanced beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air missiles and external self-protection jammer pods, among other improvements.
The HAL is expected to begin delivery of 83 Tejas Mk-1A in the March 2024-Feb 2028 timeframe. The IAF had signed a contract worth over Rs 48,000 crore with the HAL for supplying 83 LCA planes. The IAF has clearance to buy 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets at Rs 65,000 crore.&nbsp;
The IAF already has two Tejas squadrons, the &lsquo;Flying Daggers&rsquo; and &lsquo;Flying Bullets&rsquo;, one of which is now deployed in the southwestern sector facing Pakistan.

Kangana Ranaut starrer &lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; was released in cinemas on October 27 and it received mixed reviews from the critics as well as the audience.
The action thriller film has failed to leave a mark at the box office and its lifetime collections are likely to be less than Rs 10 crores.
Recently, several exhibitors from across the country opened up about &lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; debacle and shared that they cancelled 50 percent of their shows because of low occupancy.
Manoj Desai, the owner of Mumbai&rsquo;s iconic Gaiety Galaxy, called the response to Kangana Ranaut starrer &lsquo;worse&rsquo;.
He told Bollywood Hungama, &lsquo;On Sunday, we managed to get 100 viewers.
For the rest of the shows, the number of moviegoers was less than 100.&rsquo;
Desai added that even though he has decided to continue playing &lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; on the weekdays in Gaiety, the film will not be played in the smaller audis.
&lsquo;The occupancy was bad even on a Sunday. There are hardly 10-12 people in each show. From Monday, more than 50% of shows are discontinued,&rsquo; another exhibitor told the entertainment portal.
Vikrant Massey&rsquo;s &lsquo;12th Fail&rsquo;, which was released on the same day, is doing better business.
&lsquo;Tejas&rsquo; marks Kangana Ranaut&rsquo;s fifth flop in a row after &lsquo;Dhaakad&rsquo; (2022), &lsquo;Thalaivii&rsquo; (2021), &lsquo;Panga&rsquo; (2020) and &lsquo;Judgementall Hai Kya&rsquo; (2019).
Kangana&rsquo;s recently released &lsquo;Chandramukhi 2&rsquo; earned nearly Rs 40 crore.

Despite the anticipation surrounding the movie, it experienced a lackluster response, with minimal audience turnout in cinema halls on its release day.
Early estimates from Sacnilk.com revealed that "Tejas" managed to collect a mere ₹1.25 crore on its first day, indicating a tepid start.
The film struggled with a meager 6.83 percent occupancy, reflecting the audience's limited interest in the movie.
"Tejas" narrates the remarkable journey of Tejas Gill, an Air Force pilot, aiming to instill pride in every Indian by showcasing the dedication and challenges faced by Indian Air Force pilots in defending the nation.
In the film, Kangana Ranaut's character embarks on a mission to rescue hostages from terrorists, adding intensity to the plot.
Directed by Sarvesh Mewara and produced by Ronnie Screwvala, the film features a cast including Anshul Chauhan, Varun Mitra, Ashish Vidyarthi, Vishak Nair, Kashyap Shangari, Sunit Tandon, Rio Kapadia, Mohan Agashe, and Mushtaq Kak.

In December 2021, production house RSVP Movies had announced that Kangana Ranaut starrer ‘Tejas’ will release in theatres on October 5, 2022, coinciding the festival of Dussehra. However, now it is being reported that the film’s release might get postponed.
A source told Bollywood Hungama, ‘Tejas was to release in October. However, since the film is very VFX there is still quite a bit of work pending. However, the work pending isn’t much yet it will still take a while. So to avoid doing a rushed job on the film, it was decided to defer the release date.’
The source added that the film will now release in December later this year or in January 2023. An official statement from the makers of the film is still awaited.

While the Hurjet has a payload capacity of over 2,700 kg, Tejas trumps it here too with 5,300 kg. The Hurjet has a range of&nbsp;over 2,200 km. While HAL has not given this statistic, the Tejas' radius of action is 300 km.

 In November last year, the Tejas put on a stunning display at the Dubai airshow. It was perceived to be aimed at the Malaysian audience. The HAL has also reportedly announced that it is ready to adapt the Tejas to Malaysia's standards. If India clinches the deal, then it would reportedly be the first export deal involving the Tejas. It might also help Delhi's case with Argentina and Egypt, the other countries reportedly interested in buying the LCA.
 Apart from India and Turkey, Malaysia's own ATS with MiG-35,&nbsp;China&rsquo;s Catic with the L-15, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with the FA-50, and Italy&rsquo;s Leonardo with the M-346, are reportedly in the running for the Malaysian contract. But the Tejas and Hurjet are considered to be the frontrunners.
 If India does end up winning the contract, it would be even sweeter given that Malaysia reportedly floated the tender for fighter jets after incursions by the Chinese military in Malaysian airspace. India has its own border troubles with an aggressive China.

Both India and Turkey are reportedly vying to supply their light combat jets to the Royal Malaysian Air Force.&nbsp;Amid the tussle, Turkey's TAI displayed is Hurjet at a defence expo in Malaysia recently.&nbsp;The&nbsp;17th Defense Service Asia Exhibition and Conference was held in the city of Kuala Lumpur between March 28 and 31.&nbsp;Turkey has claimed that its pavilion invited great interest at the defence expo.
<h3>Tejas Vs Hurjet</h3>
So, what are the features of the Hurjet, and how does it compare with the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/lca-tejas-gets-python-5-1621830174482">Tejas</a>?&nbsp;The Turkish aircraft has a maximum speed of 1.4 Mach. Tejas is faster with speeds up to 1.6 Mach. Mach 1 is the speed of sound.&nbsp;While the Hurjet has a payload capacity of over 2,700 kg, Tejas trumps it here too with 5,300 kg.&nbsp;The Hurjet has a range of&nbsp;over 2,200 km. While HAL has not given this statistic, the Tejas' radius of action is 300 km.
In November last year, the Tejas put on a stunning display at the Dubai airshow.&nbsp;It was perceived to be aimed at the Malaysian audience.&nbsp;The HAL has also reportedly announced that it is ready to adapt the Tejas to Malaysia's standards.&nbsp;If India clinches the deal, then it would reportedly be the first export deal involving the <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/air-force-chief-tejas-far-better-than-china-pak-jf-17-fighters-1610676501880">Tejas</a>.&nbsp;It might also help Delhi's case with Argentina and Egypt, the other countries reportedly interested in buying the LCA.
Apart from India and Turkey, Malaysia's own ATS with MiG-35,&nbsp;China&rsquo;s Catic with the L-15, Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) with the FA-50, and Italy&rsquo;s Leonardo with the M-346, are reportedly in the running for the Malaysian contract.&nbsp;But the Tejas and Hurjet are considered to be the frontrunners.
If India does end up winning the contract, it would be even sweeter given that Malaysia reportedly floated the tender for fighter jets after incursions by the Chinese military in Malaysian airspace.&nbsp;India has its own border troubles with an aggressive China.

The induction&nbsp;comes at the crucial time when India is engaged in an escalating border row with China in eastern Ladakh.&nbsp;A number of dignitaries including defence minister Rajnath Singh, his French counterpart Florence Parly, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria&nbsp;will attend the ceremony.&nbsp;The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29. These jets&nbsp;are known for air-superiority and precision strikes.

New Delhi, PTI: The first batch of five Rafale fighter jets will be formally inducted into the Indian Air Force on Thursday at the&nbsp;air base&nbsp;in Ambala,&nbsp;at a time India is engaged in an escalating border row with China in eastern Ladakh.
A galaxy of dignitaries including Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, his French counterpart Florence Parly, Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat, Air Chief Marshal RKS Bhadauria and Defence Secretary Ajay Kumar will attend the ceremony.
"The program will include ceremonial unveiling of the Rafale aircraft, a traditional 'Sarva Dharma Puja', air display by Rafale and Tejas aircraft as well as by 'Sarang aerobatic team'," an IAF spokesperson said, describing the ceremony as a "very important milestone" in the history of the force.
The Rafale jets, produced by French aerospace major Dassault Aviation, are known for air-superiority and precision strikes.
IAF Spokesperson Wing Commander Indranil Nandi said a traditional water cannon salute will be given to the Rafale fleet before its ceremonial induction into the 17 squadron of the force.
The first batch of five Rafale jets arrived in India on July 29, nearly four years after India signed an inter-governmental agreement with France to procure 36 of the aircraft at a cost of Rs 59,000 crore.
The French delegation at the ceremony will include French envoy Emmanuel Lenain, Air Gen Eric Autellet, Vice Chief of French Air Force, Chairman and Chief Executive of Dassault Aviation Eric Trappier and CEO of missile maker MBDA Eric Beranger.
After the ceremony, Parly and Singh will hold talks in Ambala on ways to further deepen bilateral defence and security cooperation after the ceremony, they said.
Ten Rafale jets have been delivered to India so far and five of them stayed back in France for imparting training to IAF pilots. The delivery of all 36 aircraft is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021. A second batch of four to five Rafale jets are likely to arrive in India by November. Sources said a preliminary discussion on a possible procurement of another batch of 36 Rafale jets by India from France may figure in the talks between Singh and Parly.
