There is a serious chance that human society may collapse by 2040 if the global priorities regarding &lsquo;economic growth&rsquo; do not change. This was earlier predicted by MIT&nbsp;and has now been validated in a new assessment.

There is a serious chance that human society may collapse by 2040 if the global priorities regarding &lsquo;economic growth&rsquo; do not change. This has been ascertained recently after a 1972 MIT study was reassessed by a senior director of KPMG.
As per the old report by a team of scientists at MIT, civilization was bound to collapse if corporations and governments continued to pursue economic growth, irrespective of its environmental damage. It also said that natural resources would become so scarce that further economic growth would become impossible, and personal welfare would nosedive.
The most infamous scenario forecast&nbsp;by the report says that by 2040, the world&rsquo;s economic growth would peak but thereafter, the graph will take a sharp downturn. This will severely impact the global population with regard to food availability and natural resources. This imminent collapse will not end the human race, but the standard of human living conditions will degrade drastically.
Now, nearly half a century later, Gaya Herrington who is a Sustainability and Dynamic System Analysis Lead at KPMG,&nbsp;reassessed the MIT study to observe the predictions made in 1972. And to her horror, there is a close alignment to all the predicted scenarios. Herrington wrote in her study that the scenarios indicate that continuing business as usual to pursue constant growth, will not be possible after 2040. &nbsp;
But beyond all this, there is a silver lining. Herrington says that changes in policies like population control, reduced industrial output and prioritising health and education are the factors that can prevent this horrific downfall. Using the example of covid 19 pandemic and how the world dealt with this global crisis, she says that it is still possible to control the situation.
Herrington believes that it's not yet too late for human society to intentionally change its course and alter the trajectory of the future.

This World Earth Day we put the spotlight on startups that are promoting the sustainability story. Waste Ventures India: A Telangana-based for-profit social firm is raising the value to stakeholders across the value chain by transforming paradigms in solid waste management. The start-up claims to reduce waste of a particular gated society or office by up to 90 per cent and leaves a green footprint in return. Its R&D team has designed a scientific, free-from-infested flies and odourless procedure to consolidate organic waste. In the process of ground waste collection, it is spreading awareness about waste management among the local community, which is enabling the people to understand recycling better, composting, and other green initiatives. It is one of the first start-ups which provided a digital doorstep recyclable pickup service in Hyderabad. The company has prevented over 3000 tons of waste from Indian dumpsites since late 2013.3Phool. co is a flower recycling technology start-up. It concentrates on the circular economy, remaking floral waste into charcoal available luxury fragrance products. They accumulate the floral waste from the temples and mosques in Uttar Pradesh, averting 7600 kgs of waste flowers and 97 kgs toxic chemicals from reaching into the river every day. Rustic women self-help groups handcraft the waste into patented organic fertiliser and scent sticks through flower cycling.6 While these startups are playing their part in making the nation sustainable, covering these startups also plays a larger part in encouraging more young and bright minds of India to not just create businesses but make them future-ready in the sense that they are the future themselves.Nexus Power: The start-up creates biodegradable electric vehicle batteries from crop residue by leveraging nanotechnology. The business utilises one of the significant sources of air pollution, unburnt crops, in manufacturing rechargeable energy-storing cells using a distinctive extraction and filtration technique. Such cells are later installed in electric vehicles as they are used to make the IoT and AI-based sensor-enabled battery pack.4
The Summer House:  a Bengaluru-based online-only sustainable apparel and homeware label started in 2015. Working  in close partnership with traditional handloom artisans to create the most beautiful fabrics, the brand also sources the most sustainable fabrics possible and is on it’s way to being a zero waste company. All the garments are made in an in-house studio with a sharp focus on quality and intentional design. In silhouettes that celebrate femininity in every shape.
ZunRoof is a home tech start-up and a residential solar rooftop company. It is a Gurugram established start-up founded in 2016 that delivers solar energy and IoT smart energy solutions for creating next-generation energy technology. It claims over 10,000 solar rooftop installations and 30,000 system designs across India. The five-year-old start-up is currently in over 75 cities across 12 states and claims to have preserved electricity bills worth INR 50 crore. The start-up is supported by the family office of alliance Godrej, Intellicap Investment Network, and alumni of IIT Kharagpur.Health Horizons, a Noida based startup established in 2017 is a GMP certified, USFDA approved hemp seed processing company. It has been actively focusing on breaking the taboo created around hemp/cannabis and educating people about the array of nutritional and medicinal benefits that people can have with its consumption. They have introduced several products like Sativa Nubs, Hemp Powder to the Indian market which are extracted from one of the five sacred plants mentioned in Vedas. The brand is dedicated to making the products readily available in different varieties as superfoods.

Founded by Aditya Ruia, Anuj Ruia and Akshay Varma, the startup aims to quadruple its sales and encourage consumers to switch to sustainable living through their eco-friendly product range with the funding. The startup utilizes biodegradable and compostable raw materials like corn starch and bamboo to prepare various use-products, and claims to be a 100% eco-friendly and zero plastic company. ZunRoof|&nbsp;is one of India&rsquo;s leading residential solar energy rooftop installers. It&nbsp;has been actively focusing on breaking the taboo created around hemp/cannabis and educating people about the array of nutritional and medicinal benefits that people can have with its consumption.&nbsp; It sells a variety of organic hemp products such as hemp oil, body creams, and shampoos. The company is focused on making ecological and natural hemp products regular popular in the mainstream consumer market. Other than developing products, this aspiring startup is also published new recipes involving hemp oil and hemp seeds on their website.

Gadkari said that introduction of green hydrogen which is generated from water will be revolutionary as imports will be curbed and jobs will be added as the sector booms. Nitin Gadkari has earlier urged his fellow parliamentarians to switch to electric vehicles and said if you are spending ₹100 now for fuel, you will be spending ₹10.

Winner of the&nbsp;Circular Design Challenge 2021, the brand also encourages people to send the bags back to them after use so that they can be further turned into smaller products.&nbsp;

Buying ethical leather is a complicated affair. Kolhapur-based Desi&nbsp;Hangover makes shoes using&nbsp;upcycled leather&nbsp;from the waste laid off by the meat industry that would otherwise end up in landfills. Supporting a dying industry, the brand is working to form rural craft clusters through social innovation.&nbsp;

We buy more than 80 billion items of clothing every year globally, which is 400% more than what we bought just two decades ago.&nbsp;And not surprisingly, we throw away most of it, creating mountains of textile waste that clogs up landfills.
As more and more people become aware of the environmental cost and impact of the fashion industry, many are trying to come up with sustainable solutions.
One of them has been the concept of renting clothes, as opposed to buying them. But is rental fashion actually a more eco-conscious&nbsp;alternative? A new&nbsp;study&nbsp;has answered this question with a&nbsp;resounding&nbsp;&lsquo;no.&rsquo;&nbsp;

Published in the&nbsp;scientific journal&nbsp;<a href="https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.1088/1748-9326/abfac3/pdf">Environmental Research Letters</a>, the Finnish research compared&nbsp;five different ways of owning and discarding clothes, including rentals, resale and recycling.&nbsp;The team found that renting clothes had the highest adverse environmental impact of all, thanks to hidden costs like&nbsp;multiple deliveries between the warehouse and renter, packaging material costs and repeated&nbsp;rounds of dry cleaning.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Renting has recently gained a lot of popularity as the frugal and sustainable alternative to permanent ownership, thanks to the&nbsp;advent of companies like Rent the Runway,&nbsp;ThredUp&nbsp;and India&rsquo;s Stage3.&nbsp;Even celebrities have adopted and promoted the practice.&nbsp;However, research suggests&nbsp;that the growing&nbsp;fashion rental&nbsp;sector, valued at US $1.86 million in 2021,&nbsp;needs to be regulated much better before we can look at it as a game-changer.
