While Indian wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan proved his worth at No. 5 in the first game against Pakistan in the Asia Cup, former Indian cricketer Suresh Raina believes that India is better off playing Kishan as the opener.
The southpaw, who opens for Jharkhand and his IPL franchise Mumbai Indians, also gives the flexibility to bat at the top of the order.
&ldquo;I always said that Ishan Kishan has to open because he is a strong character who maintains a good team atmosphere," Raina told JioCinema.
The former India and Chennai Super Kings lefthander had a small stint together with Kishan at the now-defunct IPL franchise Gujarat Lions in 2016 and 2017.
Raina remembered his time with the youngster, and how the wicketkeeper-batter brought camaraderie and team spirit to the squad.
Recalling an incident, Raina said, "I told (Aaron) Finch that if Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum aren't playing, then Ishan Kishan should open. I'll bat at No. 3, and you can decide the rest of the batting line-up." "I remember in one match, he hit four-five sixes in Rajkot against Mumbai Indians, and the way he showed intent is what a team needs. Just like Rishabh Pant, who keeps laughing and maintains good team bonding, that's what's crucial,&rdquo; Raina added.
Raina also remembered that MS Dhoni had asked him to keep a watch on the youngster.
"Since he (Ishan) hails from Ranchi, he spoke to MS Dhoni, and everyone wants to be like Dhoni there. Also, because of the way Ishan contributed to Jharkhand, Dhoni told me to observe his wicketkeeping progress," Raina recollected.
India have a set opening pair in skipper Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, both of whom have performed decently in the ongoing Asia Cup.
The current opening duo are expected to continue in the upcoming World Cup in India next month as Kishan's chance to open in the format may have to wait.&nbsp;

Former Indian &amp; Chennai Super Kings batter Suresh Raina has been listed among the players set to be auctioned during the upcoming Lanka Premier League 2023. The auction is scheduled to take place on June 14, with the tournament itself commencing on July 31.
Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released the list of both international and domestic cricketers who will be available for the five-team competition. Raina, known for his powerful striking abilities at the top of the batting order, was an integral part of the CSK side in the IPL from its inception in 2008 until 2021, excluding the 2020 season when he had to return to India due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Having featured in 205 IPL matches, Raina has amassed over 5,500 runs, including an unbeaten century. He played for the Chennai Super Kings and Gujarat Lions in the IPL, while representing Uttar Pradesh in domestic cricket.
To participate in franchise leagues in other countries, players are required to announce their retirement from all forms of competitive domestic cricket as per the rules set by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Among other notable players who have retired from domestic cricket to pursue opportunities abroad is former India U-19 cricketer Unmukt Chand, along with Harmeet Singh. Both have made the decision to move to the United States, with Unmukt Chand having already played in the Big Bash League.

Interestingly, he is the 2nd-highest wicket-taker in the history of the IPL among spinners but it seems that his time may be up.
Saurabh Tiwary
Saurabh Tiwary, who was once being compared to MS Dhoni at the start of his career, also went unsold in the IPL 2022 mega auction. The southpaw from Jharkhand used to play for the Mumbai Indians up till now but a poor strike rate of 120 and fitness issues might have gone against the 32-year-old. Though he still has a few years to bounce back but chances of that look very bleak.

Another Indian pacer who will not feature in this year's IPL is Dhawal Kulkarni. The fast bowler from Mumbai may be a force in domestic cricket but it seems that franchises don't want to invest their trust in him anymore.
