Britain’s King Charles III hosted his first major event in Scotland for the South Asian diaspora since becoming monarch last month as a celebration of charity initiatives geared towards the region.
The event for the British Asian Trust, founded by him as the Prince of Wales in 2007 to tackle poverty and hardship in South Asia, took place on Monday evening at Holyroodhouse Palace in Edinburgh - the 73-year-old monarch’s residence in Scotland. The King was joined by Queen Consort Camilla as they interacted with around 300 members of the South Asian diaspora, including Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami who had his first audience with the King since taking charge in London last week.
“The King has been involved with British Asian communities for many years through his work with British Asian Trust, which he founded in 2007 with a group of British Asian business leaders,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement.
“Their Majesties welcomed guests of South Asian heritage from across the UK to the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh to recognise the contribution that these communities have made to the National Health Service, Arts, Media, Education, Business and the Armed Forces,” it said.
The King and Queen Consort are currently in Scotland undertaking their first set of joint formal engagements since the royal mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II concluded last week. During the hour-long reception, the royals also spoke to community representatives from the city of Leicester, which has been rocked by serious disorder involving sections of Hindu and Muslim communities since an India-Pakistan cricket match at the end of August.
“He was obviously appreciative of what our role has been in terms of policing, and he was very, very interested in hearing the community voice and how the communities are working together to bring back harmony,” said Rob Nixon, Leicestershire Police’s Chief Constable.
Guests at the reception included prominent members of the British Indian community, including British Asian Trust's Indian-origin chair Lord Jitesh Gadhia, and also members of the Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepalese, Bhutanese and Maldivian diaspora from across the UK.

According to a World Bank report the prolonged closure of schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic in India may cause a loss of over $400 billion in the country's future earnings. The report said South Asia region stands to lose $622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario or up to $880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario.&nbsp;The report titled "Beaten or Broken? Informality and Coivid-19 in South Asia" claims that South Asia is set to plunge into its worst-ever recession in 2020 as the devastating impacts of the pandemic on the region's economies linger.

PTI,&nbsp;New Delhi: The prolonged closure of schools due to the COVID-19 pandemic in India may cause a loss of over USD 400 billion in the country's future earnings, besides substantial learning losses, according to a World Bank report.
South Asia region stands to lose USD 622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario or up to USD 880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario, it said, adding while the regional loss is largely driven by India, all countries will lose substantial shares of their GDP.
The report titled "Beaten or Broken? Informality and COVID-19 in South Asia" claims that South Asia is set to plunge into its worst-ever recession in 2020 as the devastating impacts of COVID-19 on the region's economies linger.
"Temporary school closures in all South Asian countries have had major implications for students. They have kept 391 million students out of school in primary and secondary education, further complicating efforts to resolve the learning crisis,&rdquo; said the report.
&ldquo;While most governments have made enormous efforts to mitigate the impact of school closures, it has been difficult to engage children through remote learning initiatives," it said.
The report also noted that the pandemic may cause up to 5.5 million students to drop out from the education system and cause substantial learning losses, which will have a lifetime impact on the productivity of a generation of students.
"Most school systems closed in March, and -- though there are important exceptions -- countries are starting to reopen or have already opened their schools. Children have been out of school for approximately 5 months. Being out of school for that long means that children not only stop learning new things, they also forget some of what they have learned.
"The projected learning loss for the region is 0.5 years of learning-adjusted years of schooling (LAYS), falling from 6.5 LAYS to 6.0 LAYS, an enormous setback from recent advances in schooling," it said.
The &lsquo;Learning Adjusted Year of Schooling&rsquo; (LAYS) concept, introduced by the World Bank, seeks to combine access and learning outcomes into a single measure.
It combines quantity (years of schooling) and quality (how much kids know at a given grade level) into a single summary measure of human capital in a society.
The report has projected that based on country data on household labor incomes, the average child in South Asia may lose USD 4,400 in lifetime earnings once having entered the labour market, equivalent to 5 percent of total earnings.
"These projections are based on what we currently know about returns to schooling, using the reduced level of learning caused by the crisis. Summing these numbers for all children in South Asia, the region stands to lose USD 622 billion from the school closures in the present scenario, or up to USD 880 billion in a more pessimistic scenario.
"While the regional loss is largely driven by India, all countries will lose substantial shares of their GDP. For reference, note that South Asian governments spend only USD 400 billion per year in total on primary and secondary education. The total loss in economic output from the current closures is hence substantially higher than what countries currently spend on education," it said.
The novel corona virus has infected over 3.7 crore people across the globe claiming over 10.5 lakh lives.
India's COVID-19 caseload stands at 71.2 lakhs while the death toll is 1.09 lakh as on Monday.
Universities and schools across the country were ordered shut on March 16 to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus. On March 25, the Centre announced a nationwide lockdown. While several restrictions have been eased gradually in different phases of the 'unlock' since June 8, educational institutions continue to remain closed.
However, according to the latest unlock guidelines, schools, colleges and other educational institutions outside COVID-19 containment zones can reopen after October 15. The final decision on reopening the institutions has been left with the states and Union territories.

CW Projects - Mumbai Ahemdabad High Speed Rail

Railways is one of the most efficient and cheapest methods of speedily transporting people and goods. The Mumbai-Ahemdabad high speed rail corridor is an under construction high speed rail line connecting Mumbai in Maharashtra and Ahmedabad in Gujarat. Upon completion it will be India's premier high speed rail line. The high speed rail project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai covers the total distance of 508 km, 55.6 km of the proposal alignment falls in Maharashtra, 350.5 kilometers in Gujarat and 2 kilometers in the union territories of Dadra &amp; Nagar Haveli. The high speed rail is expected to run at an average speed of 320 kilometers per hour going as fast as 350 kilometers per hour. It will stop at 12 railway stations including Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar, Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand/Nadia, Ahemdabad and Sabarmati for 165 seconds each. The train is designated with two categories of seats - Executive and Economy. 471 kilometers of the corridor is to be elevated and there is a construction plan for a 21 kilometer underground tunnel between Thane and Virar of which seven kilometers will be under sea. The expected total journey time is approximately two hours and seven minutes. The corridor were used 24 Shinkansen E5 series of the Japanese railways as its rolling stop, six of which are going to be assembled in India. The trains will be adapted to function under Indian wheather to withstand temperatures exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. This will be done through the use of special cooling systems and air conditioners. Air conditioners and blowers in the high speed rail will be fitted with fine mesh dust filters to prevent dust from getting in. The shinkansen train will be modified further to make extra space by removing a few seats from the last coat of each train for storing heavy luggage. These trains will come equipped with multipurpose rooms that include foldable beds for feeding mothers and patients. The rooms will also be furnished with mirrors and baggage racks. In 2012 the ministry of trailways established the high-speed rail corporation of India limited for the development and execution of high speed rail projects. The feasibility of the project was assessed by the Japan international cooperation agency and the ministry of railways in 2013. The government also set up a special purpose vehicle - The National High Speed Rail Corporation in February 2016 to implement the project of high speed rail corridor from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. The total cost of the project is valued at approximately 17 billion dollars. 85% of the total cost is funded by the Japan international cooperation agency as loan at an interest rate of 0.1% for the moratorium of 15 years and repayment period of 50 years. The leftover cost will be sustained by the state government of Maharashtra and Gujarat. As of July 2020, 60% of the required land has been acquired. A tender for 28 steel divers have been allocated while the rest are underway. As per the terms of the loan agreement with the Japan international cooperation agency signaling equipment and power systems for the corridor will be imported from Japan. The corridor is expected to make its first run on August 15, 2022 on account of India 75th independence day. The marker of any good economy is the development of its transport system. With more high-speed rail corridor plans underway India is on its way to set a benchmark for an intricate transport network in the South Asian region.

White rice and diabetes: 21 nation study highlights risk

There may be a high risk of diabetes related to the consumption of white rice, South Asians more at risk, study observes.

There may be a high risk of diabetes linked to the consumption of white rice, a new analysis of over 1,30,000 adults from 21 countries over a span of a decade has shown. Comparing the data from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh with the rest of the world, the study stated that the risk may be more prominent for the South Asian population.&nbsp;
Led by&nbsp;Bhavadharini Balaji,&nbsp;The PURE study considered&nbsp;participants who consumed over one cup or 150 g of white rice a day. Over the course of the study, 6129 participants developed diabetes out of the 132,373 people involved.&nbsp;
It was found that the highest consumption of white rice was seen in South Asia, where people ate 630 g a day, followed by South East Asia at 239g. The study noted that a high consumption of rice meant a lower consumption of foods like wheat, fibre and dairy products. Onset of diabetes was correlated to the amount of white rice consumed.
There was a discrepancy in China however, where rice is a staple. Incidences of diabetes associated with white rice were fewer, which could be attributed to the kind of sticky rice which is consumed there.
White rice has a high glycemic index, which may lead to a high glycemic load in the diet. As milling the rice makes it lose its Vitamin B content, the authors recommended adding more legumes and pulses to the diet.
