Chandrasekhar emphasized that the IT ministry explicitly instructed platforms against hosting misleading fraudulent loan apps, exploiting internet users.

The government has directed social media and online platforms to ensure that they do not host advertisements of fraudulent loan apps, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar said on Wednesday.
Chandrasekhar said the IT ministry has made it clear to the platforms that they cannot carry fraudulent loan apps as those are misleading and exploit people using the internet.
"One of the areas we are now cracking down on is advertising of fraudulent loan apps that many platforms are carrying and we have, through yesterday's advisory, made it clear that no intermediary can carry advertisements of fraudulent loan apps because it will be misleading and exploits people who are using the internet," the Minister of State for Electronics and IT said on the sidelines of an event.

Police say at least two thousand people mobbed Union Square in New York City after a social media influencer, known as Kai Cenat, planned an event to give away PlayStations.

A New York gathering called by a popular 21-year-old online influencer drew an unexpectedly large crowd on Friday and degenerated into violence that left several people injured prompting a massive police turnout.
It all started with a posting on Instagram from American YouTuber Kai Cenat, calling on fans to meet him in lower Manhattan for a live-streamed event where he would hand out gifts including PlayStation 5 game consoles.
Thousands of young people at least 2,000 according to US media gathered very quickly on Union Square and surrounding streets in the hopes of seeing Cenat, who has millions of followers on Twitch, YouTube, Instagram and other social media.
As the streets heaved, young men started throwing objects from a nearby construction site, targeting people in the crowd and the police, who were rapidly deployed in large numbers. Television footage and news photographs showed rioters surrounding and blocking vehicles, with young men kicking and smashing some of the cars.

For the findings, researchers surveyed 288 participants aged between 18 and 34 to properly understand the relationship between various styles of engagement with social media.&nbsp;

The law, which takes effect March 2024, was brought in response to fears over growing youth addiction to social media, and to security risks such as online bullying, exploitation, and collection of children's personal data.
But it has prompted warnings from tech firms and civil liberties groups that it could curtail access to online resources for marginalized teens, and have far-reaching implications for free speech.
"We're no longer willing to let social media companies continue to harm the mental health of our youth," tweeted Spencer Cox, governor of the western US state, who signed two related bills at a ceremony Thursday.
The bills also require social media firms to grant parents full access to their children's accounts, and to create a default "curfew" blocking overnight access to children's accounts.
They set out fines for social media companies if they target users under 18 with "addictive algorithms," and make it easier for parents to sue social media companies for financial, physical or emotional harm.
"We hope that this is just the first step in many bills that we'll see across the nation, and hopefully taken on by the federal government," said state representative Jordan Teuscher, who co-sponsored the bill.

The guide aims to ensure that individuals do not mislead their audiences when endorsing products or services and that they are in compliance with the Consumer Protection Act and any associated rules or guidelines, says Consumer Affairs Ministry

The government on January 20 made it mandatory for social media influencers to disclose their &lsquo;material&rsquo; interest in endorsing products and services and violations can attract strict legal action, including a ban on endorsements.
The regulations are part of continuing efforts to curb misleading advertisements as well as protect the interests of consumers amid the expanding social influencer market which is projected to be worth around Rs 2,800 crore by 2025.
The new guidelines named &lsquo;Endorsement Know Hows &mdash; for celebrities, influencers and virtual media influencers (Avatar or computer generated character) on social media platforms&rsquo; has been issued by the Department of Consumers Affairs.
In case of violation, the penalty prescribed for misleading advertisements under the Consumer Protection Act 2019 will be applicable.
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) can impose a penalty of up to Rs 10 lakh on manufacturers, advertisers and endorsers. For subsequent offences, a penalty of up to Rs 50 lakh can be imposed. The authority can prohibit the endorser of a misleading ad from making any endorsement for up to 1 year and for subsequent contravention, prohibition can extend up to 3 years.

Similar efforts are underway in the European Union and the United States, but the UK's was one of the most sweeping. In its original form, the bill gave regulators wide-ranging powers to sanction digital and social media companies like Google, Facebook, Twitter and TikTok.
Critics had expressed concern that a requirement for the biggest platforms to remove &ldquo;legal but harmful&rdquo; content could lead to censorship and undermine free speech.
The Conservative government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who took office last month, has now dropped that part of the bill, saying it could &ldquo;over-criminalize&rdquo; online content. The government hopes the change will be enough to get the bill through Parliament, where it has languished for 18 months, by mid-2023.
Digital Secretary Michelle Donelan said the change removed the risk that &ldquo;tech firms or future governments could use the laws as a license to censor legitimate views.&rdquo; &ldquo;It was a creation of a quasi-legal category between illegal and legal,&rdquo; she told Sky News. &ldquo;That's not what a government should be doing. It's confusing. It would create a different kind of set of rules online to offline in the legal sphere.&rdquo; Instead, the bill says companies must set out clear terms of service, and stick to them. Companies will be free to allow adults to post and see offensive or harmful material, as long as it is not illegal. But platforms that pledge to ban racist, homophobic or other offensive content and then fail to live up to the promise can be fined up to 10 per cent of their annual turnover.

The legislation also requires firms to help people avoid seeing content that is legal but may be harmful &mdash; such as the glorification of eating disorders, misogyny and some other forms of abuse &mdash; through warnings, content moderation or other means.
Companies also will have to show how they enforce user age limits designed to keep children from seeing harmful material.
The bill still criminalizes some online activity, including cyberflashing &mdash; sending someone unwanted explicit images &mdash; and epilepsy trolling, sending flashing images that can trigger seizures. It also makes it an offense to assist or encourage self-harm, a step that follows a campaign by the family of Molly Russell, a 14-year-old who ended her life in 2017 after viewing self-harm and suicide content online.
Her father, Ian Russell, said he was relieved the stalled bill was moving forward at last. But he said it was &ldquo;very hard to understand&rdquo; why protections against harmful material had been watered down.
Donelan stressed that &ldquo;legal but harmful&rdquo; material would only be permitted for adults, and children would still be protected.
&ldquo;The content that Molly Russell saw will not be allowed as a result of this bill,&rdquo; she said.

As per an NDTV report, Abhijit Patidar, has claimed to have murdered 25-year-old Shilpa Jharia, apparently for being unfaithful.
What comes as a bigger shock in the case is Patidar confessed to the killing in a video he recorded after slitting the throat of the woman and posted on social media.&nbsp;
The report says, Patidar, in a now viral video, said "Bewafai Nahi Karne Ka" (do not be unfaithful). He then lifts a blanket to reveal a woman lying in a pool of blood with her throat slit.&nbsp;
In a series of posts, Patidar named one Jitendra Kumar who was also allegedly in a relationship with the deceased woman, for which he ended the woman's life.&nbsp;
In another post, he says: "Babu heaven mein phir milenge".&nbsp;
Quoting a senior police officer, it says, the accused had booked a room on November 6 at Mekhla Resort in Jabalpur. The woman met Abhijit the next day on November 7 as captured on CCTV. He then left the room after some time. On November 8, the resort staff broke into the room and found the woman's body.&nbsp;
The police are yet to arrest Abhijit Patidar, who claims to have killed Shilpa Jharia about a week ago.

For the study, researchers collected data of more than 1,000 adults aged between 18 to 30. Depression and personality traits were evaluated with a questionnaire and social media usage was calculated by asking individuals how much time they spent on their phones.
The team observed that social comparison enhances negative feelings about oneself and others, which explains how the risk of depression increases with increased social media use. Apart from this, consuming negative content online and reduced in-person interactions can also increase the risk of depression among young adults.
