The Nepal Army on Wednesday imposed nationwide restrictive orders followed by a curfew to quell possible violence under the guise of protest, a day after deadly anti-government demonstrations forced Prime Minister K P Sharma Oli&rsquo;s resignation, leaving key buildings in flames and the nation on edge.
Nepal&rsquo;s capital, Kathmandu, and other major cities wore a deserted look as army troops fanned out across the country.
The restrictive orders are in effect throughout the country from morning to 5 pm, and then a curfew will be in place until 6 am on Thursday, the army said in a statement.
The measures were necessitated to curb possible incidents of looting, arson, and other destructive activities "under the guise of agitation", it said.
The army, which took control of nationwide security operations at 10 pm on Tuesday, warned that any form of demonstrations, vandalism, arson, or attacks on individuals and property during the restrictive period would be treated as criminal acts and dealt with accordingly.
"There are also possible threats of rape and violent attacks against individuals," the statement said.
"Keeping in view the security situation of the country, restrictive orders and a curfew have been enforced," it said.
The statement clarified that vehicles and personnel engaged in essential services, including ambulances, fire engines, health workers, and security forces, would be permitted to operate during the restrictive orders and curfew.
In another statement, the army expressed concern over the actions of certain groups, which are "taking undue advantage of the difficult situation" and causing &ldquo;severe damage to ordinary citizens and public property.&rdquo; "We have deployed our troops to prevent any untoward incidents, including looting and vandalism,&rdquo; said an officer from the Nepal Army headquarters.
Authorities have also issued orders for residents to remain indoors unless "absolutely necessary", in a bid to prevent further unrest, he said.
Since early morning, the normally bustling streets of Kathmandu wore a deserted look. Only a few residents ventured out, primarily to stock up on daily essentials.
Roads were heavily patrolled by security personnel, and fire trucks were deployed to douse blazes in government and private buildings torched by agitators on Tuesday.
The army also urged people to return guns, weapons and bullets looted or found during the student-led agitation to the nearest police post or security personnel.
"As there are chances of such weapons being misused, please inform the authorities and return them to the security agencies at the earliest,&rdquo; the military said in another statement.
It warned that legal action would be taken against anyone found possessing such arms or ammunition without returning them.
The army also appealed to citizens "not to wear army uniforms in this sensitive period, as it is illegal to do so".
Meanwhile, security personnel arrested 27 people involved in looting, arson and vandalism from different parts of Kathmandu, officials said.
During the operations, Rs 3.37 lakh in cash, along with 31 weapons, magazines and bullets, were recovered from individuals in Chabahil, Bauddha and Gaushala areas of Kathmandu.
The army appealed to the public to cooperate with security agencies in restoring peace and maintaining law and order.
Prime Minister Oli quit on Tuesday shortly after hundreds of agitators entered his office demanding his resignation for the death of at least 19 people in police action during Monday's protests over corruption and a social media ban. The ban on social media was lifted Monday night.
However, the demonstrations continued even after his resignation.

The student-led "Gen Z" protests in Nepal that began against a government ban on social media expanded into a larger campaign reflecting growing public criticism of the KP Sharma Oli dispensation and the country's political elite over alleged corruption and apathy towards the common people.
Prime Minister Oli resigned in the face of massive protests for a second day, even as the ban on social media was lifted late on Monday night. The demonstrators stormed many government buildings and set the parliament as well as homes of several high-profile leaders ablaze, a day after 19 people died in violence.
Against this backdrop, Nepali students in India are living in anxiety.
A master's student at Delhi University's Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) said he had cancelled his plans to travel home, which is near Kathmandu, for the Dussehra festival.
"I was looking forward to being with my family, but they have advised me to stay back in Delhi until the situation there stabilises," he said.
Manoj Chaudhary from Nepal's Birgunj, pursuing MBA at IIT-Dhanbad, said the situation in his hometown was calmer compared to the capital. Still, he has suspended his plans to visit home.
"I was planning to visit Nepal soon, but now all my plans are on hold. My family is safe, but I am worried about Kathmandu, where buildings have been set on fire and students have lost their lives. That should never have happened. I only hope peace returns quickly," he said.
Another Delhi University student said her immediate parents and siblings live with her in Delhi, but her grandparents and extended relatives are in Nepal.
"I am deeply worried about them. Every day we hear news of protests turning violent, and it is painful not knowing how safe they are," she said.
A first-year DU student said the reports of deaths and destruction had shaken him. "I never thought students would be killed for raising their voice. It feels like the country is being torn apart." "I used to ask friends here to visit Nepal for its beauty, but now I feel sad about what is happening," he said, adding that he calls his family every few hours to check on their safety.
A PhD scholar at the South Asian University, who earlier studied at Jawaharlal Nehru University, said the unrest had left her disturbed even though her family lives in a rural area, which is relatively safe.
"When your country suffers, you feel helpless sitting far away. The violence was tragic, but I hope the protests open the way for something positive," she said.
Another DU student said he had deferred his trip home indefinitely.
"I was supposed to see my parents later this month, but I can't take that risk now. All I do is wait for messages from family and friends, hoping they are safe," he said.
India advised its citizens to defer travelling to Nepal until the condition stabilises.&nbsp;

Nepal reeled under a serious political crisis on Tuesday as Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned in the face of massive anti-government protests with the demonstrators attacking private residences of several high-profile leaders, headquarters of political parties and even vandalising the parliament, a day after 19 people died in police action against the agitators.
The students-led protests appeared to reflect the growing public anger with the Oli dispensation over a range of issues including a ban on social media and inaction against alleged corruption as the protesters, defying curfews and heavy deployment of security forces, resorted to arson and stormed various key buildings and establishments.
Hours before Oli's resignation, the protesters set on fire the Nepalese leader's private house in Balkot, and attacked properties of President Ramchandra Paudel, former prime minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, Communication minister Prithvi Subba Gurung, former home minister Ramesh Lekhak and former prime minister Sher Bahadur Deuba.
The intensity of the protests that began on Monday against the government's ban on social media sites grew on Tuesday with demonstrators taking out anti-government marches in all leading cities and towns.
Flight services at Tribhuvan International airport in Kathmandu have been partially suspended in view of the protests.
With the situation deteriorating rapidly, the top brass of Nepali Army and other security agencies issued a joint appeal calling for restraint and resolution of the crisis through dialogue.
"As the prime minister's resignation has already been accepted by the president, we call upon all to restrain and not to allow more loss to life and property in this difficult situation," they said.
"A peaceful resolution through dialogue is the only way to restore order and stability,&rdquo; they said in a joint statement.
The statement was signed by Nepal Army chief Ashok Raj Sigdel, Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, Home Secretary Gokarna Dawadi, Chief of Armed Police Force (APF) Raju Aryal, Inspector General of Police Chandra Kuber Khapung and Chief of National Investigation Department Hutraj Thapa.
Oli stepped down shortly after hundreds of agitators entered his office shouting slogans demanding his ouster for the death of at least 19 people in police action during the protests on Monday as well as for his alleged "inaction" against widespread corruption.
In his resignation letter to President &nbsp;Ramchandra Paudel, the 73-year-old Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist&ndash;Leninist) cited the "extraordinary circumstances" facing Nepal and said he is quitting to pave the way for a "constitutional and political" resolution of the current situation.
Oli, known to be close to China, had become the prime minister in July 2024 for the fourth time with the support from the Nepali Congress Party. He was scheduled to visit India this month.
Though the Nepal government last night revoked its ban on social media websites following the protests led by 'Gen Z' youths, the agitators continued their demonstration against corruption and demanding accountability for deaths of 19 people.
The agitators under the banner of Gen Z, shouted slogans such as "KP Chor, Desh Chhod" (KP thief, leave the country) and "Take Action Against Corrupt Leaders".
Protesters also torched the residence of former home minister Ramesh Lekhak at Naikap in Kathmandu, just a day after he resigned from his post, according to officials.
Demonstrations were reported from Kalanki, Kalimati, Tahachal, and Baneshwor in Kathmandu, as well as Chyasal, Chapagau, and Thecho areas of Lalitpur district. Protesters, mostly students, chanted slogans such as &ldquo;Don&rsquo;t kill students&rdquo;, defying the restrictions on public gatherings.
In Kalanki, demonstrators burnt tyres to block roads from the early hours of the morning, according to eyewitness accounts.
The agitating youths also pelted stones at the residence of Communication Minister Prithvi Subba Gurung in Sunakothi at Lalitpur district, eye witnesses said. Gurung had ordered a ban on the social media sites.
They also vandalised former PM Sher Bahadur Deuba's house at Budhanilkantha in Kathmandu.
The Gen Z group, which has been campaigning against corruption for some time, has used social media platforms like Reddit and Instagram to expose what they called the "extravagant lifestyles of the children of ministers and other influential figures." They have posted videos and images, questioning the sources of wealth that fund such opulence, purportedly derived from corrupt practices.
The ban of social media sites was an attempt to suppress freedom of speech, the agitators said.
The Nepalese government had ordered the ban of 26 social media sites, including Facebook and &lsquo;X&rsquo;, over their failure to register with the government.
However, in a late-night development on Monday, the government announced the restoration of access to social media platforms, in an apparent bid to ease public anger.
Among the other demands of the protesters include guarantee for freedom of expression, and the introduction of a retirement age for those holding political office, according to Gen Z activists.
Nepal Army has also issued a separate statement expressing its commitment to protect the country's independence, sovereignty, territorial integrity, independence and national unity.
"We are analysing the latest developments of the Gen Z movement being launched in Nepal in the recent period," it said.&nbsp;

The appeal came as protesters set fire to the parliament, Singha Durbar premises, Supreme Court, political party offices, and homes of senior leaders.
In a separate statement, the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balen Shah, urged everyone to remain calm. His statement came soon after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli announced his resignation.
He also asked everyone to be ready to hold talks with the Army chief, but stressed that Parliament must be dissolved first.
&ldquo;We had made it clear from the beginning &mdash; this is purely a Gen-Z movement. Dear Gen-Z, the resignation of your oppressor has already come. Now, please remain calm,&rdquo; he said in a social media post.
The agitating youths burnt the house belonging to former prime minister and Nepali Congress chief Sher Bahadur Deuba situated at Budhanilkantha in the east of Kathmandu.
A video has gone viral on social media showing protesters capturing Deuba and his wife, Arzu Rarna, the former foreign minister, from their residence. They sustained minor injuries in the scuffle.
The agitators also set fire to the Hilton Hotel, a five-star property situated in Kathmandu. Deuba's son Jaybir is believed to have a major share in the hotel. They have also vandalised Ullens School in Khumaltar, Lalitpur, owned by Arzu.
The situation has become tense as the agitators were seen capturing various government offices and vandalising them. The security personnel have become almost spectators.

Veteran politician K P Sharma Oli, who wrecked many governments in the past, kindled hopes for much-needed political stability in Nepal when he assumed power for the third time in 2024, but that proved to be short-lived due to his own actions.
Known for his pro-China stance, Oli was forced to resign in the face of massive protests by youths over corruption and a government ban on social media that resulted in the death of at least 19 people in police firing and injuries to hundreds.
The 73-year-old leader's ouster has once again pushed Nepal, which has had 14 governments in the last 17 years, into political instability.
He came to power in July 2024 after he ditched his one-time friend Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' and joined hands with his foe-turned-friend Sher Bahadur Deuba, who was leading the largest party - Nepali Congress - in the House of Representatives.
Oli, the CPN-UML Chairman, defended his party's decision to ditch 'Prachanda' and form a coalition government with the Nepali Congress, saying it was required for maintaining political stability and development of the country.
Oli, who joined politics as a student activist in his teenage years and spent 14 years in jail for opposing the now-abolished monarchy, became Nepal's prime minister for the first time in October 2015. During his 11-month stint, Kathmandu's ties with New Delhi strained.
He publicly criticised India for interfering in Nepal's internal matters and accused it of toppling his government. He, however, promised to forge a partnership with India to move forward towards the path of economic prosperity ahead of assuming office for the second term.
Oli became prime minister for the second time in February 2018 when the alliance between the CPN (Unified Marxist&ndash;Leninist) and &lsquo;Prachana&rsquo;-led CPN (Maoist Centre) won a majority in the House of Representatives in the 2017 elections. After their victory, the two parties formally merged in May 2018.
During his second term, Oli claimed that efforts were being made to oust him after his government redrew Nepal&rsquo;s political map by incorporating three strategically key Indian territories, a move that strained ties between the two countries.
India had termed as "untenable" the "artificial enlargement" of the territorial claims by Nepal after its Parliament unanimously approved the new political map of the country featuring Lipulekh, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura areas, which India maintains belong to it.
Oli accused his rivals within the party of making efforts to topple his government.
He served as the prime minister from February 5, 2018, to May 13, 2021. He continued to serve from May 13, 2021, to July 13, 2021 -- because of an appointment by the then President Bidya Devi Bhandari, described by local media as a success of Oli's Machiavellian tricks.
Later, the Supreme Court ruled that Oli's claim to the post of prime minister was unconstitutional.
Born on February 22, 1952, in Terhathum of the eastern Nepal district, Oli is the eldest child of Mohan Prasad and Madhumaya Oli. His grandmother raised him after his mother died of smallpox.
He left his school in Class 9th and joined politics. He, however, did an Intermediate level in Arts from jail later. His wife, Rachana Shakya, is also a communist activist, and the two had met in the course of party activities.
Oli started his political career as a student activist in 1966 by joining the fight against the autocratic Panchayat System under the direct rule of the King.
He joined the Communist Party of Nepal in February 1970. He went underground soon after taking the party's membership. The same year, he was arrested for the first time by the Panchayat government.
In 1971, he took leadership of the Jhapa Rebellion, which was initiated by beheading landlords in the district.
Oli is one of the few political leaders of Nepal who spent several years in jail. He was imprisoned for 14 consecutive years from 1973 to 1987.
After his release from prison, he became a central committee member of UML in charge of the Lumbini Zone until 1990.
Following the 1990 democratic movement that brought down the Panchayat regime, Oli became a popular name in the country. In 1991, he became the founding chairman of Prajatantrik Rastriya Yuwa Sangh. A year later, he became the party&rsquo;s publicity department chief and established himself as a key figure in Nepali politics.
He was elected as a member of the House of Representatives for the first time from Jhapa district in 1991. Oli had also served as the minister of home affairs in 1994&ndash; 1995. He was re-elected to the House of Representatives from Jhapa electorate no 2 in 1999.
He had served as deputy prime minister during the interim government led by Girija Prasad Koirala in 2006 after the successful conclusion of the second People's Movement.
Oli was elected as leader of the CPN-UML Parliamentary Party in the Second Constituent Assembly on February 4, 2014, and further consolidated his position when he became the prime minister for the first time in October 2015.&nbsp;

The portal noted that the agitation, spearheaded by young Nepalis, was not politically motivated but fuelled by frustration over corruption, nepotism, unemployment and growing social disorder.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress general secretary Gagan Thapa has called for the immediate resignation of PM Oli.
"PM Oli should immediately resign, taking responsibility for the situation," he wrote on social media.
Senior Nepali Congress leaders Bimalendra Nidhi and Arjun Narsingh Kesi have suggested that the party withdraw all its ministers from the Oli-led government, form a government, and initiate dialogue with the agitating Gen Z group.
Talking to PTI, Nidhi said as the largest party in Parliament, Nepali Congress must safeguard democracy and the Constitution during these critical times.
"Nepali Congress should withdraw support to the Oli-led government and initiate the process of forming a national government," he said.
Kesi also said that Nepali Congress should withdraw from the government and initiate the process of forming an all-party government.
He also demanded the creation of a powerful anti-corruption body to investigate the assets of those in power and take decisive action, alongside initiating dialogue with the Gen Z group.
Meanwhile, two Nepali Congress ministers resigned from the government. Agriculture Minister Ramnath Adhikari and Health and Population Minister Pradip Poudel stepped down, citing the government's harsh response to student protests on Monday.
However, some ministers remain in the Oli government.

The Kathmandu District Administration Office issued the curfew orders effective from 8:30 am until further notice, covering the entire capital city.
The decision was taken to bring the situation under control following clashes between security forces and youth groups over a social media ban on Monday, which left 19 dead and over 300 injured. The previous curfew expired at 5:00 am.
"No movement of people, any type of gathering, demonstration, protest, meeting and sit-in will be allowed during the curfew," said the notice issued by Chhabilal Rijal, Chief District Officer of Kathmandu.
"However, emergency services, including ambulances, fire engines, vehicles carrying health workers, tourists, media personnel, and air travellers will be permitted to operate in coordination with security personnel," the notice said.
The administration of the adjoining Bhaktapur district also imposed an indefinite curfew from 8:30 am in several areas, including Pepsikola, Radheradhe Chowk, Sallaghari, Duwakot and Changu Narayan Temple.
The administration also issued restrictive orders in parts of the Lalitpur metropolis, adjoining Kathmandu.

Gurung said the Ministry of Information has ordered the concerned agencies to resume the social media sites as per the demands of &lsquo;Gen Z&rsquo;, which spearheaded a massive protest in front of the Parliament in the heart of Kathmandu.
The Nepalese government had ordered the ban of 26 social media sites, including Facebook and &lsquo;X&rsquo;, over their failure to register with the government.
The minister also requested the protesting 'Gen Z' group to withdraw their protest programme.
The demonstration on Monday turned violent when some protesters entered the Parliament complex, prompting police to use water cannons, tear gas, and live rounds to disperse crowds, eyewitnesses said.
At least 19 people died and over 300 others were injured in Monday's violence. Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak resigned over the situation.
Meanwhile, social media sites such as Facebook, &lsquo;X&rsquo; and WhatsApp have come back into operation from Monday night.&nbsp;

A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi recorded their presence and directed them to file their replies to the petition.
They are accused of poking fun at the disabled and those suffering from Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) and blindness.
They were directed to again appear in-person on the next hearing.
The top court, however, allowed influencer Sonali Thakkar alias Sonali Aditya Desai to appear virtually owing to some physical condition.
The social media influencers were asked to file their replies within two weeks beyond which they won't get any extension.
Besides, their absence on the next date of hearing will be viewed seriously, the court said.
The top court asked Attorney General R Venkataramani, representing the Centre, to prepare social media guidelines while balancing the freedom of speech and expression and the rights and duties of the others.
Venkataramani sought time to assist the court on the issue and said the enforceability of guidelines would require a detailed consideration.
The court said the freedom of one person should not violate the rights of others, underlining enforceability of the guidelines as the most difficult part.
"There are many free advisors in the market. Ignore them. The guidelines should be in conformity with constitutional principles balancing freedom and the rights and duties of a person. Then we will examine it. We will have open debate on such guidelines. Let all members of the bar and stakeholders including the so-called stakeholders also come and give their viewpoints," Justice Kant said.
Article 19, the judge said, deals with freedom of speech and expression and cannot overpower Article 21 of the Constitution, which provides right to life and liberty.
The court mulled examining individual misconduct brought under scrutiny and said the petitioner NGO Cure SMA Foundation of India had raised a serious issue.
"We need to understand that the right to dignity also emanates from the right which someone else is claiming. Article 19 of the Constitution," the judge said, "can't overpower Article 21. Suppose a race takes place between Article 19 and 21, Article 21 has to trump Article 19".
Justice Kant went on to tell senior advocate Aprajita Singh, appearing for the NGO, that the court was doing it for posterity and the parties must ensure not a single word of the guidelines were misused.
"What we are doing is for posterity. You have to ensure that not a single word is misused by anyone. You have to ensure balance. We have to protect citizens' rights. A framework must be there that the dignity of anyone is not violated," the bench said.
On May 5, the top court directed the five social media influencers to appear before it or face coercive action after a plea alleged that they ridiculed persons suffering from SMA, a rare disorder, and also those suffering from other disabilities on their show.
Besides Raina, the apex court had issued notice to four other influencers Vipul Goyal, Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, Sonali Thakkar alias Sonali Aditya Desai and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar.
The court termed the influencers' conduct as "damaging" and "demoralising" and said some serious remedial and punitive action was needed so that these things don't happen again.
No one, the apex court said, can be allowed to demean anybody under the garb of the right and mulled framing guidelines on social media content concerning the disabled and people with rare disorders.
It asked Mumbai police commissioner to serve notice on the five influencers to ensure their presence in the court, failing which coercive action will be taken.
Raina was booked by Maharashtra and Assam police over derogatory comments on his YouTube show &ldquo;India&rsquo;s Got Latent&rdquo; along with podcaster Ranveer Allahbadia.
On February 18, the top court granted interim protection from arrest to Allahbadia while calling his comments "vulgar" and saying he had "dirty mind" which put society to shame. Aside from Allahbadia and Raina, others named in the case in Assam are comics Ashish Chanchlani, Jaspreet Singh and Apoorva Makhija.

The Bombay High Court on Tuesday granted bail to a 19-year-old student from Pune arrested for her social media post on Indo-Pak hostilities and ordered her immediate release while rebuking the Maharashtra government for its "radical" reaction to her post.
A vacation bench of Justices Gauri Godse and Somasekhar Sundaresan said it was "absolutely shocking" that the student has been treated like a "hardcore criminal" by the government.
The court ordered the student to be released on bail forthwith, noting that she should not have been arrested at all since she had deleted the post immediately, expressed remorse and apologised for the same.
This is not a case where the girl has to remain in custody anymore, the HC said, adding the girl has to be released on Tuesday itself.
"The applicant (girl) shall be released on bail by the Yerwada prison on Tuesday itself," the bench said.
The concerned officer of the prison is directed to ensure that she is released today evening itself so that she can appear for her college examination, the court said.
The court also suspended the rustication order passed by the girl's college and directed the institution to issue her a hall ticket so that she can appear for the examination.
The rustication order has been issued hurriedly without giving the student an opportunity to give her explanation, the HC said.
The student from Pune was arrested earlier this month for her social media post criticising the Indian government during the Indo-Pak hostilities amid Operation Sindoor.
She is presently in judicial custody.
While the girl had initially moved the HC challenging the decision taken by her college rusticating her, her lawyer Farhana Shah on Tuesday also filed a petition seeking quashing of the FIR and bail.
The court granted the girl bail and allowed her to appear for the ongoing examinations.
It also cautioned the girl from acting responsibly and refrain from uploading such posts on social media.
The bench said such a "radical" reaction from the state government was unwarranted and has turned a student into a criminal.
"This is an absolutely shocking case. Are the police bent upon ruining the girl's life? Is she a hardcore criminal?" the court remarked.
At the most, the girl's act of sharing such a post can be termed as an "act of indiscretion" by a young student, the bench said.
"The girl has posted something and then realised her mistake and apologised. Instead of giving her a chance to reform, the state government has arrested her and turned her into a criminal," it added.
The court questioned the conduct of the government and the college.
"Someone is expressing their opinion, and this is how you ruin her life? A student's life has been ruined," it said.
Additional government pleader P P Kakade said the girl's post was against the national interest.
The court, however, said national interest would not suffer because of a post uploaded by a student who has realised her mistake and apologised.
"How can the state arrest a student like this? Does the state want students to stop expressing their opinions? Such a radical reaction from the state will further radicalise the person," the court said.
The bench also rapped the college for rusticating the girl, saying that an educational institution's approach should be to reform, not punish.
The job of an educational institution is to not just impart academic education but also to help students reform, the court said, adding that the college ought to have given the girl an opportunity to explain.
"Instead of reforming her and making her understand, you have turned her into a criminal. You want the student to turn into a criminal?" the court asked.
It said the girl is at an age where mistakes are bound to happen and she had suffered enough.
The teen, in her plea, stated that the college's decision was arbitrary and a gross violation of her fundamental rights.
She requested the high court to quash the rustication, order her reinstatement, and allow her to appear for the semester exams scheduled to begin on May 24.
The second-year student of Information Technology contended that the rustication order passed by the Sinhgad Academy of Engineering, a private unaided college affiliated with the Savitribai Phule Pune University, was "arbitrary and unlawful".
The petitioner claimed she had reposted the social media post without ill intent and immediately apologised.
On May 7, the girl reposted a post on Instagram from an account called 'Reformistan', which criticised the Indian government for provoking a war against Pakistan.
Within two hours, she realised her mistake and deleted the post after receiving a barrage of threats.
In its May 9 rustication letter, the college stated that since the girl had brought disrepute to the institution, it was justified to preserve the institution's ethos.
It further said the petitioner had anti-national sentiments and posed a risk to the campus community and society.
The girl had to be escorted out of college due to protests against her, and she was arrested the same day by the Kondhwa police after an FIR was registered against her.
She is currently lodged in the Yerwada Prison in Pune in judicial custody, and a local court rejected her bail plea.

"One of the areas we are now cracking down on is advertising of fraudulent loan apps that many platforms are carrying and we have, through yesterday's advisory, made it clear that no intermediary can carry advertisements of fraudulent loan apps because it will be misleading and exploits people who are using the internet," the Minister of State for Electronics and IT said on the sidelines of an event.

The survey conducted by OnePoll found that social media is no longer just for young individuals; in fact, the average American aged 65 and above spends 300 hours annually engaging with social media platforms.

The survey was conducted on 2,000 seniors who use social media and it noticed their usage and habits found that they spend an average of 47 minutes a day on these platforms.&nbsp;
It was noted that seniors spend the most time on Facebook i.e. 75 per cent, 28 per cent spend time on on YouTube and 10 per cent on Instagram.&nbsp;
It also proved useful in other ways, with the majority saying they have learned something useful from social media in their lives.&nbsp;

New York: police action after fans of young influencer create ruckus in Lower Manhattan

Police say at least two thousand people mobbed Union Square in New York City after a social media influencer, known as Kai Cenat, planned an event to give away PlayStations.

A New York gathering called by a popular 21-year-old online influencer drew an unexpectedly large crowd on Friday and degenerated into violence that left several people injured prompting a massive police turnout.
It all started with a posting on Instagram from American YouTuber Kai Cenat, calling on fans to meet him in lower Manhattan for a live-streamed event where he would hand out gifts including PlayStation 5 game consoles.
Thousands of young people at least 2,000 according to US media gathered very quickly on Union Square and surrounding streets in the hopes of seeing Cenat, who has millions of followers on Twitch, YouTube, Instagram and other social media.
As the streets heaved, young men started throwing objects from a nearby construction site, targeting people in the crowd and the police, who were rapidly deployed in large numbers. Television footage and news photographs showed rioters surrounding and blocking vehicles, with young men kicking and smashing some of the cars.

A recent study published in the journal Behaviour &amp; Information Technology, titled 'Social media use', loneliness and psychological distress in emerging adults, found that people who use social media passively are more prone to feel lonely and experience psychological distress.
For the findings, researchers surveyed 288 participants aged between 18 and 34 to properly understand the relationship between various styles of engagement with social media.&nbsp;

Passive users - These users exclusively browse content by other users.&nbsp;
Active non-social users - This category of users includes individuals who post their own content but did not engage with other users.&nbsp;
Active social users - These kind of users post their content and interact with other users as well by liking their post and commenting.&nbsp;
However, it was found that increased passive social media use is linked to anxiety, depression and stress, while non-social media users were associated with decreased stress.&nbsp;
