A new study published in the journal Neurology found that people who sleep more than nine hours per night had an increased chance of suffering a stroke.
For the study, researchers analysed data from people across 32 countries. Participants were asked if they snored, snorted or had breathing problems while sleeping.
The findings suggested that people who slept for more than 9 hours regularly were more likely to have a stroke than those who didn&rsquo;t.

But our sleep-wake cycle is controlled by a protein called PER. The cycle is maintained well if a person wakes up and sleeps at the same time regularly. The mind at some point starts signaling the body and you start waking up before the alarm. Do you regularly struggle to get sleep for 5 hours or more? Well, be alert! A recent study published in the Journal PLOS Medicine suggests that people over the age of 50 who sleep for 5 hours or less at night are more prone to chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and heart problems.
The study was conducted on almost 8,000 men and women, aged 50 to 70 for over 25 years. Researchers found that people who slept for 5 or fewer hours were 30-40 per cent more likely to be diagnosed with multi-morbidity (the co-occurrence of two or more chronic conditions).
According to Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, the sleep cycle differs with age. Babies under a year need 16 hours of sleep whereas adults do need 7 to 9 hours of sleep.

According to a new study, adding an hour or so of sleep every night could help people reduce their daily calorie intake by 270 calories. The study was published in the journal Jama Internal Medicine.

Researchers from the University of Chicago carried out a clinical trial with 80 adults to examine how sleep interacts with obesity and found that getting more sleep could lead to a weight loss of approximately 11kg over a period of three years. The research did not ask the volunteers to restrict their diets or change their exercise routines.
As per the findings, people who typically slept for less than 6.5 hours a night shed an average of 270 calories from their daily intake when they got an extra 1.2 hours of sleep. The team also found that cutting usage of devices such as mobile phones and laptops before bedtime helped people sleep better and for a longer period.
