A Sikh family from India who was targeted last month in a shooting spree in the Canadian province of Ontario that killed one person was possibly a case of mistaken identity, provincial police have said.
Jagtar Singh, 57, was killed while his wife Harbhajan Kaur, 55, and their daughter were critically injured during a shooting on Mayfield Road near Airport Road, along the Caledon-Brampton border, on November 21.
Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and paramedics upon arrival found Jagtar Singh dead on the scene, and rushed Kaur and their daughter to hospital with life-threatening injuries, the Toronto Star newspaper reported on Monday.
Officers are investigating &ldquo;all aspects of this homicide, including whether or not the victims of this crime were intended targets or not&rdquo;, OPP Detective Inspector Brian McDermott said.
&ldquo;It is still too early to make any firm determinations on that aspect.&rdquo; According to a source close to the victims who spoke on condition of anonymity, the family wants to make clear that they were not involved in anything that might have led to the November 20 shooting in the home they were renting.
Describing them as "innocent" and ordinary people, the source said the victims did not have any ties to criminal activity and had no connection to an illegal trucking operation at the same address, which had recently been shut down by the Town of Caledon.
The source said the man and his wife were visiting family from India when they were shot.
The source said the family believes the attackers who stormed into the home that night were looking for someone else. &ldquo;They mistakenly shot this family thinking it was (that person&rsquo;s) family,&rdquo; they said.
Investigators have not said whether the shooting was linked to the business.
The source said the family was not connected to the business and was simply renting the upper part of the house. The basement unit was also being rented out.
&ldquo;This was a normal family,&rdquo; a representative of Gurudwara Jot Parkash Sahib, a Sikh place of worship in Brampton, said days after the shooting.
&ldquo;Everyone is shocked," the Gurudwara representative added.&nbsp;

Earlier, Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal had said that the statue is an "outrageous violation of Sikh norm", and asked the government to take action.

Councillor Mohini Singh said she heard of the attack shortly after it happened and went to visit Gagandeep. "I was horrified when I saw him. He could only speak in soft tones and he couldn't open his mouth,"' she said to a news channel. She said the young man's eyes were swollen shut and that he was obviously in significant pain.

On Monday, Singh had a fight with Niranjan Singh, a resident of Nurpurbedi in Rupnagar, over some issue.
Singh sustained serious injuries in the clash and later died.
The accused Niranjan also sustained injuries and was undergoing treatment at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, the police said.

Singh's father immigrated to the US in the early 1970s.

Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee chief Harjinder Singh Dhami on December 25 asked the Sikh community to observe the martyrdom day of the sons of Guru Gobind Singh as 'Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas' instead of 'Veer Bal Diwas.'
"Observing the martyrdom day of 'Sahibzadas' as Veer Bal Diwas by the government of India is a mischievous conspiracy to undermine the greatest martyrdom ... in the world's religious history," Dhami said.
"If the government really wants to pay homage to Sahibzadas, then what is the problem in observing this day as 'Sahibzade Shahadat Diwas,'" he asked.
He said that it&rsquo;s a historic fact that sacrifice of Guru Gobind Singh's two sons was important in uprooting the Mughals from north.

The trio of recruits - Aekash Singh, Jaskirat Singh, and Milaap Singh Chahal - had sought an exemption from a Marines grooming rule requiring them to shave their beards, with the men arguing it was their expression of commitment to their religious faith.
The Marine Corps told three Sikh men that they could serve only if they shaved before going through basic training.
They appealed to the US Court of Appeals for the DC Circuit in September after a lower-court judge denied their request for a preliminary injunction that would have allowed them to enter basic training with their articles of faith.
&ldquo;They are now suffering and will continue to suffer grave, immediate, and ongoing injuries to the exercise of their faith,&rdquo; the three-judge bench of the US Court of Appeals here ruled on Friday.
&ldquo;A federal court has just ruled that Sikhs can maintain their religious beards while serving their country in the U.S. Marine Corps. &ldquo;She noted that the Marine Corps has never explained why the Corps cannot apply the same or similar [religious] accommodations that the Army, Navy, and Air Force, and Coast Guard provide,&rdquo; Baxter said.
The US Army, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard all accommodate the religious requirements of Sikhism.
In the Sikh religion, it is mandatory for the male adherents to not trim their hair and beard along with keeping kanga (wooden comb), kirpan (small sword), kara (steel bracelet), and a white cotton undergarment (kachera).
"Sikhs have a long tradition of serving in militaries around the globe, motivated by their religious teaching to defend the defenseless. We are grateful that these Sikh recruits can continue that tradition&mdash;the ruling was made right in time for them to enter boot camp," Baxter tweeted.
&ldquo;They believe, as part of their religious duty, in defending the rights of others," Baxter told National Public Radio (NPR).
&ldquo;This was also a win for our national security. At a time of historic recruiting shortfalls, the Marines now have access to a new community of Americans who have a history of bravely serving in the military,&rdquo; he tweeted.
The Marine Corps allows medically required beards and diverse hairstyles for women, and has relaxed its rules around tattoos.
In 2021, NPR reported that the Marines planned to address its lack of diversity and retention problems. Approximately 75% of Marines leave at the end of their four-year term, the highest turnover rate among the military services, according to the article.
The ruling means that the three men are allowed to go ahead with training, while the Marine Corps considers a possible appeal.
"They should really just recognize it's time to make this change and let all Americans serve without having to abandon their religious &ndash; their core religious belief," Baxter said.

A petition filed against permission to members of the Sikh community to carry 'kirpan' or daggers on flights has been dismissed.
The Delhi High Court on 22 December 2022 rejected a public interest litigation (PIL) which sought the setting-up of a committee of stakeholders to examine the issue.
The petitioner contended that he was &ldquo;not questioning&rdquo; the right to profess and practice a religion under Article 25 of the Constitution but only wanted the constitution of a committee of stakeholders to examine the issue.
&ldquo;I admit that Article 25 allows the carriage of a kirpan. But when you are flying, the regulator must apply its mind. I want constitution of a committee of stakeholders to examine the issue. If the committee feels that the notification is good, so be it. Not a problem,&rdquo; he had said.

The petitioner, a lawyer, challenged a March 4, 2022 notification by the Centre which said Sikh passengers shall have exceptional regulatory sanction to carry kirpans having blade length of not more than six inches and total length of not more than nine inches whilst on board any civilian flight in India that is operating on all domestic routes.

A 24-year-old Indian-origin Sikh man has died of gunshot wounds in the Canadian province of Alberta, with police citing homicide as the reason for his death, the second such incident this month in this country.
The victim, identified as Sanraj Singh, was located by the police in Edmonton city when they responded to a gunshot report on December 3 night, an Edmonton police news release said.
Singh was found sitting in a vehicle in medical distress. The police performed CPR, a life-saving technique, until the Emergency Medical Services arrived and declared him dead.

The autopsy report revealed homicide to be the manner of death, the press release said.
According to the police, a suspect vehicle was seen leaving the area, and photos of the same were released by homicide investigators. Residents were also asked to check their CCTV cameras or dashcam footage for any suspicious activity on the night of December 3.

A 40-year-old Sikh woman has been killed at her home in Canada and her husband arrested as a suspect, according to Canadian police.
Harpreet Kaur was stabbed multiple times at her home in Surrey, British Columbia on Wednesday night in Surrey, CBC news reported on Friday.
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said that they were called to a residence in the Newton area shortly before 9:30 pm on Wednesday for reports of a stabbing.
When the officers arrived, they found a woman with life-threatening injuries who was rushed to the hospital where she died of her injuries, the report said.
Sgt. Timothy Pierotti of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) is investigating the homicide along with the Surrey RCMP serious crime unit.

"These incidents have a significant impact, not only on the family and friends of the victim but the entire community. Surrey RCMP's victim services have been engaged and are available to anyone in need of assistance", he was quoted as saying.

A 21-year-old Canadian-Sikh woman has been shot dead, in an apparent "targeted" killing in Canada's Ontario province, according to the police.
The victim, identified as Pawanpreet Kaur from Brampton, was fatally shot by an unidentified assailant on the night of December 3 in Mississauga city of Ontario province, according to a press release by the Peels Regional Police on Sunday.
According to the Toronto Sun newspaper, Kaur was shot outside a gas station.
Police received information about a woman being shot at around 10:39 pm, and located the victim with apparent gunshot wounds upon arrival at the scene. Life-saving measures were attempted however the victim succumbed to her injuries, as per police.

A statue of a Sikh soldier was unveiled on Sunday in UK's Leicester city to honour Sikhs who fought for Britain in conflicts around the world.
The bronze figure on a granite plinth went on display in Victoria Park on Sunday, the BBC reported.
The Sikh Troops War Memorial Committee said it would complement the existing war memorials already there.
Sikhs made up more than 20 per cent of the British Indian Army at the outbreak of World War I, the report added.
The statue was created by artist Taranjit Singh and paid for with council funding and donations from Sikh congregations.
"We are so proud to be unveiling this memorial to honour the sacrifice of all those brave men who travelled thousands of miles to fight for a country that wasn't their own," Ajmer Singh Basra, president of the committee, was quoted as saying by the report.
He said the statue would serve as a reminder to Sikhs who have made Leicester their home, the report added.
Piara Singh Clair, from Leicester City Council, said: "For many decades, the Sikh community has significantly contributed towards the success of our city.
"I am very pleased that the idea of a Sikh memorial statue - envisaged by the late councillor Culdipp Singh Bhatti MBE - will be unveiled in Victoria Park.
"It will provide a fitting tribute alongside other memorials in the park." The unveiling took place at De Montfort Hall on Sunday and was attended by hundreds of people, including representatives from the armed forces.

Robert Solis, the man convicted of murdering Sandeep Dhaliwal, the first turbaned Indian-American Sikh police officer in the US state of Texas while making a traffic stop in 2019, has been sentenced to death, according to a police official.
The verdict was handed down by the jury, a panel made up of citizens. Solis showed no emotion as the sentence was read on Wednesday. Jurors deliberated for just 35 minutes before recommending the death penalty in the punishment phase of the trial. They deliberated for 25 minutes in the guilt phase.
&ldquo;Verdict is in: Jurors sentence Robert Solis to death. We are extremely grateful that justice has been served,&rdquo; Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez tweeted.
Solis, 50, was convicted by the jury of the Harris County Criminal Court in Houston of the capital murder of 42-year-old Dhaliwal, a 10-year-veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
Dhaliwal made national headlines when he was allowed to grow a beard and wear a turban on the job. He was gunned down in an ambush-style shooting while conducting a routine mid-day traffic stop in northwest Houston on September 27, 2019.
Authorities said Dhaliwal was shot multiple times from behind after he had stopped Solis in a residential neighbourhood and was walking back to his patrol car.
"...Basically just shot him in a very ruthless, cold-blooded way," said Sheriff Gonzalez in 2019.
Jurors saw multiple angles of the shooting and heard from 65 prosecution witnesses, who testified about a criminal history that goes back more than 30 years.
During the trial, Solis testified in his own defense and told jurors he had accidentally shot Dhaliwal.
But prosecutors argued Solis deliberately shot Dhaliwal because he didn't want to go back to jail. At the time of the traffic stop, Solis had a warrant for violating parole, CBS News reported.
During his closing argument, his last chance to address jurors, Solis merely said, "The only thing I have to say is that it's your decision to make. My life is in your hands," KTRK-TV Houston reported.
Solis asked for several delays during the trial. He told the judge he was sick, and also said he had not been given proper time to prepare.
His behaviour throughout the trial stands in direct contrast to the life and legacy of Dhaliwal, who leaves behind a wife and three children.
"Anybody I talked to, they say, 'I wish we had a Dhaliwal at this time. How many people get justice today? How many families?" Dhaliwal's older sister, Harpreet Rai was quoted as saying in the report.
"We should all aspire to be a Dhaliwal. He left such a legacy. He was a humanitarian and he helped so many beyond his work," Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said.
Just moments after Solis received the death sentence, a teenager gave a victim's impact statement, speaking directly to Solis.
"You're a nobody, Robert. You're the least powerful person in this room," she told the court.
Dhaliwal worked with United Sikhs, a global humanitarian relief and advocacy nonprofit, to help organise the donation of truckloads of supplies for first responders after Hurricane Harvey.
A post office in west Houston has been renamed in his honour and Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher, who brought the renaming legislation to the US House of Representatives, had said at the dedication ceremony: &ldquo;I am honoured to play a role in commemorating Deputy Dhaliwal's remarkable life of selfless service&rdquo;.
&ldquo;He represented the very best of our community: he worked for equality, connection, and community through his life of service to others. I was glad to work with a bipartisan delegation, our community partners, and those in the Sikh community, to pass legislation to rename this building the Deputy Sandeep Singh Dhaliwal Post Office,&rdquo; Fletcher added.
However, this wasn't the first dedication for Deputy Dhaliwal. A year after his death, a portion of Beltway 8 near Highway 249 was renamed in his honour.

Brar, a respiratory therapist, was called a "phenomenal addition to Brampton City Council" by Mayor Patrick Brown, who won a second term in the recent election. Brar had previously run as the Ontario NDP candidate in Brampton West, and had lost to the current Progressive Conservative MPP Amarjot Sandhu.
As many as 40 Punjabis were in the fray for Brampton civic elections, as per reports. Brar focused on three areas in her campaign - building new infrastructure, reducing crime, and improving road safety.

Hargobind refused to be released without the freedom of 52 princes imprisoned alongside him. The Sikh guru had finally prevailed.
Trudeau said that the festival is an occasion to "reflect on the importance of standing in solidarity with those around us facing injustice and serving those in need".
The north American country has a large Sikh-Canadian population.

The statement said, "The individual was placed in handcuffs while officers took possession of the object. The handcuffs were removed after the object was retrieved. Further investigation showed the item was a kirpan, an article of faith in Sikhism."
The statement by the university's chancellor and chief diversity officer added, "State law and University policy prohibit the possession of a knife or other edged instruments on campus, but we will use this as a learning opportunity by engaging in constructive dialogue with Sikh students and employees.  Together, we are confident we can find reasonable measures and educational opportunities that both protect the safety of our campus and the religious practices of our community members."
The statement ended by saying, "Our diversity makes us a better, richer, more successful community.  We want every Niner to feel welcomed, supported and safe. We apologize that is not what this young man felt in our union yesterday.  We are committed to ensuring it doesn’t happen again."
