A brother, a son, a world famous musician, and a politician - Sidhu Moose Wala wore many hats. He was beloved to many, as evident by the thousands of people who came to mourn him at his funeral. Before he tragically lost his life to bullets on May 29, Punjabi Rap&rsquo;s rising star lived life at breaking pace, already achieving many accolades by the age of 28.
Born Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu in the village of Moosa in the Mansa district of Punjab, Moose Wala chose his stage name to honour his place of birth. He reportedly started listening to hip hop music from Grade 6, and admired the music of Tupac Shakur, widely considered one of the most influential rappers of all time.
In 2016, after completing an engineering degree, Moose Wala moved to Brampton in the Ontario province of Canada, where he shot to fame with his 2017 song &lsquo;So High&rsquo;. Moose Wala&rsquo;s success on the global stage came fast. In 2018, he released his debut album &lsquo;PBX 1&rsquo;, which charted in Canada, and won awards. He had 6 singles chart in the Billboard Hot 100 in Canada, and one in the UK. In 2020, the Guardian included him in their 50 best new artists&rsquo; list, noting that South Asian music rarely crosses over to the UK.

In India, his popularity knew no bounds, with songs regularly topping Hot 100 charts. Along with music, he also starred in Punjabi films. He started his own music label, in his own name, under which he released two of his own albums, along with works by other artists. The label later came to be called 5911 records, in reference to a popular tractor. It was on a 5911 tractor that his body was carried for last rites at his funeral.
In his lyrics, Moose Wala often evoked imagery of rural life from Punjab, even when writing from Canada. Along with references to farms and tractors were lyrics about bravado, self-belief, and rebellion. They included aggressive lines about firing guns, pot shots at rivals, and lines referencing rebellion against religious norms. These lyrics, which spoke deeply to fans and endeared him to many, also landed him in controversy. Moose Wala was criticised for promoting gun culture, a problem many see as endemic to the Punjabi film and music industries. In 2019, police barred him from performing in Surrey in the UK, citing a risk of violence. In India, he was booked under two sections of the Arms Act in 2020 for a video where police officers were showing him how to fire guns.
Moose Wala was also active in Indian politics. He supported the farmers&rsquo; protests against the government&rsquo;s three proposed farm laws, now repealed. He later joined the Indian National Congress ahead of the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, which he contested from his home constituency of Mansa. Despite massive crowds at his political rallies, much like his concerts, he lost to the Aam Aadmi Party&rsquo;s Vijay Singla by a margin of over 63,000 votes. He released his song &rsquo;Scapegoat&rsquo; in April, lamenting his failure in the elections.
On May 29, Sidhu Moose Wala was driving his car in Mansa when he was shot at by assailants, and perished as a result. Reports indicate he was shot over two dozen times. It was in Canada that Sidhu Moose Wala made his name as a global star, and it&rsquo;s those ties that seem to have come back to haunt him.

Punjab police linked the murder to a gang run by Lawrence Bishnoi, a criminal who is linked with over two dozen murder and extortion cases, and is presently incarcerated in Tihar jail. A Facebook profile claiming to be Goldy Brar, a Canada-based gangster linked with the gang, has taken responsibility for the killing, saying that Moose Wala was killed to avenge the murders of his cousin, and a fellow gang member. Moose Wala&rsquo;s manager, Shaganpreet, was reportedly linked with the murders.
Parts of Canada have long suffered from organised crime by Indo-Canadian gangs, many of whom are staffed by second-generation immigrants from Punjab. According to a report, between 2006 to 2014, South Asians accounted for 21.3% of gang-related deaths in the British Columbia region. In April 2021, police busted an Indo-Canadian drug trafficking network in the city of Brampton, where Moose Wala made his name, and seized over $2.3 million in drugs, and 48 fire arms.
Moose Wala&rsquo;s family has denied all links to gang-related crimes, and demanded an independent probe into the shooting, presided over by a sitting High Court judge.
Sidhu Moose Wala&rsquo;s life eerily resembles that of his icon, Tupac Shakur. On May 15, a fortnight before his eventual death, Moose Wala released a song titled &lsquo;The Last Ride&rsquo;. In it, he talks about how the glow on the young man&rsquo;s face expresses, that he knows he will die young. The cover art for the single is an image of Tupac Shakur&rsquo;s car, in which he was shot and killed in 1996. He was only 25, and the controversial murder was purported to have ties to organised crime.
Like Tupac, Sidhu Moose Wala had a short career, in which he moved fast, broke rules, courted controversy, and endeared himself to many. Like Tupac, Moose Wala&rsquo;s legacy will likely outlive him, and reach far and wide.

The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the murder case of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala is making steady progress, Additional Director General of Punjab Police Pramod Ban said on Tuesday.
Moosewala, the singer-politician who had joined the Congress months before the state assembly polls, was shot dead on May 29 by unidentified assailants in Mansa district, a day after the state government curtailed his security cover.
"The SIT headed by Inspector General of Police Jaskaran Singh is making steady progress in the investigation and connecting the dots by working on the leads gathered so far through interrogation of the suspects already arrested and other inputs," Ban, who also heads the Anti-Gangster Task Force, was quoted as saying in a statement issued by the Punjab government on Tuesday night.
Following “strenuous” efforts made by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to put Moosewala's killers behind bars, the Punjab Police on Tuesday got the transit remand of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi from the Patiala House Court in Delhi, the statement said.
Bishnoi is being brought to Punjab under heavy security cover and is expected to reach early Wednesday, it said.
The court passed the order as Punjab Police produced Bishnoi before it after formally arresting him in the case, according to the statement.
The statement said Bishnoi, who has been named as an accused and conspirator in Moosewala's murder case, was in the custody of Delhi Police for the last 14 days.
The Delhi Police had brought the gangster on production warrants from Tihar Jail and on completion of his police remand on Tuesday. The Special Cell of Delhi Police produced Bishnoi in the court.
According to the statement, the Advocate General of Punjab appeared in the court in Delhi on the directions of Mann to demand Bishnoi’s transit remand.
An application was moved by the SIT investigating the murder case to seek permission of the court to arrest Bishnoi against whom the local Mansa court had already issued arrest warrants.
The plea of the Punjab Police was contested by the lawyers of the accused on the grounds of his security in the custody of the Punjab Police, which was opposed by the Advocate General of Punjab.
After hearing the contentions of both the parties, the court granted permission to arrest the accused and also gave a transit remand, it said.

The Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against gangster Goldy Brar who claimed responsibility for the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
Brar is currently living in Canada and the Red Corner Notice comes eight days after the CBI submitted a request to the Interpol. 
The CBI had acted after the Punjab Police had sought the Red Corner Notice against Brar on May 30 in connection with two old cases.
Brar, a native of Sri Muktsar Sahib, had gone to Canada on a student visa in 2017 and he is an active member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Moose Wala's murder was allegedly in retaliation to Akali youth leader Vicky Middukhera's killing that took place last year.
The Punjab Police on Tuesday had said it had arrested eight people so far in connection with the 27-year-old singer's brutal murder.

The Interpol has issued a Red Corner Notice against gangster&nbsp;Goldy Brar who claimed responsibility for the killing of singer Sidhu Moose Wala.
Brar is currently living in Canada and the Red Corner Notice comes eight days after the CBI&nbsp;submitted a request to the Interpol.&nbsp;
The CBI&nbsp;had acted after the Punjab Police had sought the Red Corner Notice against Brar on May 30 in connection with two old cases.
Brar, a native of Sri Muktsar Sahib, had gone to Canada on a student visa in 2017 and he is an active member of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang.
Moose Wala's murder was allegedly in retaliation to Akali youth leader Vicky Middukhera's killing that took place last year. The Punjab Police on Tuesday had said it had arrested eight people so far in connection with the 27-year-old singer's brutal murder.

On Saturday, the parents of Moosewala had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah here. Earlier, Punjab Chief Minister Bhgawant Mann had also expressed grief with the family.   Senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa had written to CM Mann, urging him to "transfer the murder case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) or the National Investigation Agency (NIA) so that justice can be delivered to the family at the earliest".

Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, who is suspected to be involved in Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's killing, on Wednesday withdrew from the Delhi High Court his plea in which he had sought necessary safeguards as he apprehended a "fake encounter" by the Punjab Police.
At the outset, his counsel submitted before Justice Swarana Kanta Sharma that he wishes to withdraw the petition and wants to file it before the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
The court said, "the petition is dismissed as withdrawn".
Delhi Government Standing Counsel (criminal) Sanjay Lau said the petition was not maintainable in Delhi.  The plea, in the Delhi High Court, had sought direction to the Tihar Jail authority and the Delhi Police to ensure that necessary safeguards, including videography, are taken for his safety before giving his custody to any other state police, including the Punjab Police.
Bishnoi had earlier approached a district court here which refused to entertain his plea.
He was lodged in Tihar Jail in connection with a case lodged under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crimes Act (MCOCA) and was on Tuesday remanded in three-day custody of the Delhi Police Special Cell after it arrested him in an Arms Act case.
On May 29, Moosewala was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Punjab's Mansa district, a day after the state government curtailed his security cover. His cousin and a friend, who were travelling in a jeep with him, were also injured in the attack.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced setting up a judicial commission headed by a sitting high court judge to probe the killing of 28-year-old Moosewala.
Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu, known as Sidhu Moosewala, was among the 424 people whose security was withdrawn or curtailed on May 28 temporarily.
Bishnoi, in his petition filed in the high court through advocate Vishal Chopra, sought a direction to Central Tihar jail authorities to give prior intimation to his advocates before giving his custody to any other state police on any production warrant.
He said he apprehends a fake encounter by the Punjab Police due to "political unrest between political parties there".
"Pass a direction to the Delhi Police and Tihar Jail authority to ensure all necessary security arrangements for the petitioner as he shall be duly handcuffed, shackled and videographed during the production warrant and on transit remand if any warrant produced by the Punjab Police for the safety of his life," the plea said.
Punjab police chief V K Bhawra had claimed that prima facie, it seemed to be an inter-gang rivalry between the Lawrence Bishnoi Group and Lucky Patial group.
Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar has allegedly claimed responsibility for the murder on May 29, and said it was planned by him and the Lawrence Bishnoi group.

The Delhi Congress staged a protest near Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence in Delhi on Monday accusing the Aam Aadmi Party of being responsible for Sidhu Moosewala's killing in Punjab a day before.
The protesters, including Delhi Congress president Anil Kumar, marched from Sushruta Trauma Centre towards Kejriwal's residence but were stopped by the Delhi Police at a barricade.
"The AAP government is responsible for the daylight murder of Sidhu Moosewala. Arvind Kejriwal should answer why Moosewala's security cover was withdrawn although his life was under threat and it was known to intelligence agencies in Punjab," Kumar said.
The Punjabi singer and Congress leader was shot dead by unidentified attackers in Mansa district of Punjab on Sunday, a day after his security was curtailed by AAP government in the state.
Congress also protested outside AAP&nbsp;office in Chandigarh.
