Although he initially walked off the field with the help of the physio, his condition worsened as his vital signs dropped, leading to immediate hospitalisation. Subsequent scans revealed internal bleeding from a spleen laceration, necessitating ICU care for close observation.</p>
<p>The BCCI released a statement confirming that Iyer&rsquo;s condition had stabilised: "The injury was promptly identified, and the bleeding was immediately arrested. His condition is now stable, and he continues to be under observation. A repeat scan done on Tuesday, 28th October, has shown significant improvement, and Shreyas is on the road to recovery. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, will continue to monitor his progress."</p>
<p>Speaking ahead of India&rsquo;s T20I series opener in Canberra, captain Suryakumar Yadav described the team&rsquo;s relief at seeing Iyer recover. "Now see, we are not doctors. When we saw from outside, when the catch was taken (by Shreyas), it looked like it was normal," he said. "But none of us were there, only those who were there can tell what actually happened. So they said after going inside it was felt you will have to pay good attention (to him). Then he was rushed to the specialist, and we were told about what happened."</p>
<p>He added, "After that we talked to him, when he was talking normally, we felt that it is a little better now, because doctors and physios told us that it was an unfortunate incident, which happens rarely. But sometimes rare incidents happen to rare talent."</p>

<p>&ldquo;He has been shifted out of ICU and may take a few more days before he is discharged from hospital in Sydney,&rdquo; a BCCI source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity.</p>
<p>Iyer sustained a lower left rib cage injury while attempting a difficult running catch to dismiss Alex Carey off Harshit Rana&rsquo;s bowling. Though he initially walked off the field with assistance from the physio, his condition later deteriorated as his vital parameters dropped, prompting immediate hospitalization.</p>
<p>Subsequent tests revealed internal bleeding caused by a laceration in the spleen, following which he was admitted to the ICU for close monitoring.</p>

<p>"God is with his side, he is recovering really well, doctors are supporting him, BCCI is in full support, he will recover soon and then we will take him home with us," Suryakumar said.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, sources indicated that Iyer&rsquo;s family members are expected to travel to Sydney soon to be by his side as he continues to recover.</p>

<p>India ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been admitted to a hospital in Sydney and is currently in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after suffering internal bleeding resulting from a rib cage injury sustained during the third match against Australia.</p>
<p>Iyer, who had taken a brilliant catch running backwards from backward point to dismiss Alex Carey, appeared to have hurt his left rib cage in the process and was rushed to the hospital soon after returning to the dressing room on Saturday. Scans revealed he sustained a "laceration injury to the spleen".</p>
<p>"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region...He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation," the BCCI said in a statement on Monday. "Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well."</p>
<p>"The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress," the statement added.</p>
<p>The 30-year-old will remain under observation for 2-7 days. "Shreyas has been in ICU for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately," a source privy to the development told PTI on condition of anonymity. "He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding."</p>
<p>The BCCI medical team acted swiftly after Iyer's vital parameters fluctuated upon his return to the dressing room. "The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He&rsquo;s a tough lad and should be fine soon," the source added.</p>
<p>Initially, Iyer was expected to be out of action for about three weeks, but the recovery period may now be longer. "Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it&rsquo;s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket," the source said.</p>
<p>The 31-year-old is expected to remain in the Sydney hospital for at least a week before being declared fit to travel back to India. Iyer is not part of India's T20 squad.</p>

<p>Courtesy Rohit&rsquo;s 97-ball knock and his 118-run stand for the third wicket with Shreyas Iyer (61 off 77 balls), India managed a fighting total after losing skipper Shubman Gill (9) and Virat Kohli (0) in quick succession.</p>
<p>Towards the back-end, Axar Patel (44 off 41 balls) did what Ravindra Jadeja has been doing for the Test team. His innings and a stand of 39 with a gutsy Washington Sundar (12) gave the bowlers something to bowl at.</p>
<p>Harshit Rana (24 not out) and Arshdeep Singh (13) added 37 off 29 balls for the ninth wicket to take the team score past the 260-run mark.</p>
<p>For Australia, Adam Zampa, back after attending the birth of his second baby, got 4 for 60 with most of the batters getting dismissed trying to attack him. Xavier Bartlett (3/39 in 10 overs), with the prized scalp of Kohli and a maiden over, also stood out.</p>
<p>However, the Indian innings was about Rohit&rsquo;s determination as he had to survive a lot of anxious moments in the Powerplay when Josh Hazlewood (0/29 in 10 overs, including two maidens) made the ball talk.</p>
<p>There was a point when Rohit had played 17 consecutive dot balls off Hazlewood and both him and Iyer looked overtly cautious due to the underlying moisture and lateral movement.</p>
<p>In case of Kohli, he was shaping for an outswinger but Bartlett got one to move in sharply after pitching and the maestro was caught plumb in front.</p>
<p>While leaving the ground, he acknowledged the fans at Adelaide, a venue where he has scored multiple Test hundreds and a World Cup century against Pakistan.</p>
<p>For Rohit, the first 50-odd balls were about consolidation and keeping the bat close to his body, trying to leave the deliveries on the length and taking a few on the body.</p>
<p>The only positive shot in that phase was a flicked boundary over square leg off Mitchell Starc.</p>
<p>The first time one got a glimpse of vintage Rohit was when he played back-to-back customary pick-up pulls off Mitchell Owen&rsquo;s friendly medium pacers.</p>
<p>India got 17 from that over and with Iyer also rotating the strike with an upright stance, the scoreboard suddenly saw movement and momentum.</p>
<p>The innings was, however, far from being silken smooth.</p>
<p>It was about a veteran, who wanted to make his naysayers eat humble pie. He was ready to grind it out and look ugly initially before eventually opening up.</p>
<p>The 2027 World Cup is far away but what Rohit intended to prove was that there is still some fuel left in the tank. Once the initial phase was negotiated, Rohit didn&rsquo;t look in any kind of discomfort.</p>
<p>There was enough time for a 33rd ODI hundred but the swivel off his hips while trying to deposit Starc over the square leg boundary became his undoing.</p>
<p>While Rohit got much-needed breathing space, Kohli continued to be under pressure and left the ground raising his fist for the Adelaide spectators who probably saw the last of him.</p>
<p>It is not the first time that Kohli scored consecutive ducks but it seems that the intensity that added to his legend has diminished considerably. India had lost the opening match of the three-game series by seven wickets in Perth.</p>

<p>Phil Salt is a perfect foil for the Indian superstar who goes all-out in his attack, while Mayank Agarwal, skipper Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma are the trusted lieutenants of that batting line-up.</p>
<p>Since he has missed RCB's last two games, it remains to be seen if Tim David is fit for this contest as he forms a vital death overs batting pair with another burly hitter in Romario Shepherd.</p>
<p>Like Kohli in their batting, the calm and composed Josh Hazlewood (21 wickets) has been at the helm of RCB's rise and the fourth highest wicket-taker and the Australian would want to add more to move up the ladder in one last game.</p>
<p>On their part, stung by that crushing defeat in their homeground at Mullanpur, Iyer's Kings showed no scars from that defeat as they knocked out five-time winners Mumbai Indians in Qualifier 2 to reach their first final after 11 years.</p>
<p>It's only fitting that PBKS and RCB, who finished at the top two positions respectively after a gruelling 70-match league round, have a crack at the trophy which has eluded them from the time the competition began.</p>

<p>Punjab's bowling, without Marcus Jansen, did look a little depleted but having managed to keep a lid on Mumbai Indians' for the entirely of an innings on a batting-friendly wicket tells that there is more to it than what has been perceived.</p>
<p>Yuzvendra Chahal is still dealing with a hand injury and was not at his absolute best in the Qualifier 2 but Punjab would need him to fire against his former franchise.</p>
<p>While there are no predictions of rains impacting the contest, an additional hour to the playtime extending the duration to 120 minutes and having a reserve day in the final are the measures in place to ensure the contest is completed.</p>

<p>"The way Priyansh started was fabulous; young players are fearless. They tick the boxes in the nets; the effects of the prep is now showing on the field.</p>
<p>"Inglis is the only player whose position has been chopping and changing. Since he loves playing the new ball, I wanted him to play more deliveries. It worked wonders. We know he's destructive and a big-match player with a great attitude," he said.</p>
<p>MI skipper Hardik Pandya believed they were 20 runs short of what could have been a winning score.</p>
<p>"The way the wicket played, we were definitely 20 runs short. That happens, we've been playing really good cricket, we couldn't play our best cricket.</p>
<p>"We were definitely 20 runs short. We could have capitalised either at the start or in the middle; we'll figure it out," he said.</p>
<p>Pandya said it was a wake-up call for MI before they head into the playoffs.</p>
<p>"IPL is like that; this franchise has won five trophies, and it has always been tough. Anytime you take your leg off the accelerator, the other teams are also keen to win. The message would be simple: This was just a blip; learn from this and look forward to the knockouts," he said.</p>
<p>He said MI's bowling unit was not clinical on Monday.</p>
<p>"They really took on certain balls whenever we erred, and I don't think as a bowling unit we were clinical; we gave some balls that they really capitalised and at certain times, they played some good shots as well.</p>

Iyer was eventually removed from the Test squad, and he supposedly took a break to heal from an injury before making a comeback in Ranji Trophy cricket. While he was back, the BCCI also did not consider him for a central contract.</p>

He has won two titles previously with KKR, and his strategies have been spot-on in terms of what execution we have to make against the opposition.&rdquo; Iyer seemed confident that KKR would come up trumps against SRH with Gambhir offering his invaluable inputs from the dug-out.</p>
<p>&ldquo;Hopefully, we keep continuing with the same momentum with his knowledge.&rdquo; The last six months has been quite a roller-coaster journey for the stylish right-hander, whose initial reluctance to play red-ball domestic cricket saw him lose the BCCI central contract.</p>
<p>Iyer did come back and play the Ranji Trophy final against Vidarbha where he scored a 95 in the second innings.</p>
<p>The 29-year-old had a middling IPL so far and also wasn't remotely in contention for a berth in the T20 World Cup side.</p>
<p>The scars have not healed, and were evident when he spoke about how people didn't believe him when he talked about his struggles with a back injury, which seemed to have resurfaced.</p>

<p>For Iyer, it was important to stay focused on the job at hand rather than thinking about what all had gone wrong.</p>
<p>&ldquo;When IPL was approaching, all I wanted was to put my best foot forward. Whatever planning and strategizing we did before it and executing it to the best of our abilities, and that's where we are right now,&rdquo; he added.</p>
<p>Iyer had pulled out of the England Tests at home after the first two games and once he started training for the IPL.</p>
<p>Unlike others who loosely use the word adjustment and adaptability, Iyer admitted that it was easier said than done.</p>
<p>&ldquo;The transformation from red ball to white ball is difficult as a batter and also as a bowler. So, it was difficult at the start, but once you get used to it, you pick up the pace and match on with the other players.&rdquo; While Iyer did have a torrid time during February-March, he gradually started to get over his concerns about national selection once he appeared for Mumbai in the Ranji final.</p>
<p>&ldquo;We won the final. I was a part of the team and also contributed in the final. It gives me immense pleasure to be playing so well in the last few months,&rdquo; said Iyer, who headlined his team's chase in the Qualifier 1 against SRH with a well-timed unbeaten 58.</p>
<p>&ldquo;All I did was stay in the present and not think about what was going to happen to me or was worried about the selection process.</p>

<p>"We have to go back to the drawing board and got to learn from that. I am glad this happened at the start of the tournament. When we go back, we know our home conditions pretty well. We need to analyse the situations and need to make the best use of it."</p>

<p>The 29-year-old had missed the last season as he underwent a back surgery in April. He returned to action in September but his back continues to cause him discomfort.</p>
<p>He played the opening two Tests against England before complaining of back stiffness following which he was removed for the Indian squad for the last three games.</p>
<p>Iyer skipped Mumbai's Ranji Trophy quarterfinal as well but played the semifinal and final.</p>
<p>However, he was unable to take the field on the last two days of the final against Vidarbha due to back trouble.</p>
<p>KKR open their 2024 IPL campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens on March 23.</p>
