Former cricketer Shikhar Dhawan appeared before the Enforcement Directorate for questioning in a money laundering case linked to the illegal betting app 1xBet.

Former Indian cricketer Shikhar Dhawan on Thursday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning in an alleged illegal betting app-linked money laundering case, official sources said.
He entered the office of the federal probe agency in central Delhi around 11 am. The agency recorded his statement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) as part of this investigation linked to an "illegal" betting app named 1xBet, the sources said. The 39-year-old former India opener is understood to have been linked to the app through certain endorsements. The ED wants to understand his links with this app during the questioning.
The agency is probing multiple such cases involving illegal betting apps that are alleged to have duped numerous people and investors worth crores of rupees or have evaded a huge amount of taxes.
Last month, former cricketer Suresh Raina was questioned in this case by the federal probe agency.
The Union government has banned real-money online gaming by bringing a legislation recently.
According to estimates by market analysis firms and probe agencies, there are about 22 crore Indian users in various such online betting apps out of which half (about 11 crore) are regular users.
The online betting app market in India is worth over USD 100 billion which is growing at the rate of 30 per cent, according to experts.
The government recently told Parliament that it has issued 1,524 orders from 2022 till June 2025 to block online betting and gambling platforms.&nbsp;

The value of the property is Rs 65.61 crore, and stamp duty is Rs 3.28 crore, taking the total consideration to nearly Rs 69 crore.

Shikhar Dhawan announced himself at the Under-19 World Cup in style. In the 2004 edition, he smashed 505 runs at an average of over 84. It was a record back then as his tally was the most in a single edition of the U-19 World Cup until South Africa's Dewald Brevis bettered it by one run in 2022.

Dhawan however, failed to emulate his domestic form in international cricket to start with. With his ODI career just 5 games old, he had scored just 69 runs. But things were about to change in the 2013 Champions Trophy.

Punjab Kings skipper Shikhar Dhawan, who is nursing a shoulder injury, was ruled out of Friday's IPL match against the Kolkata Knight Riders and the team is hoping for his return against Chennai Super Kings on May 1.
The 38-year-old last played against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 9 and since then he missed three matches with Sam Curran stepping in as the captain.
PBKS spin bowling coach Sunil Joshi said Dhawan is on a recovery course and the left-hander could possibly make a return in their next game in Chennai.
"He was in form and we really missed his batting services. We saw him batting yesterday, going through the nets and everything," Joshi said on the eve of their match against KKR.
"He is on the road to recovery. Hopefully, he should be fit for the next game (against CSK)," he said.
PBKS have failed to fire as a batting unit and are ninth on the table with four points from eight matches.
Wicket-keeper batter Jitesh Sharma has been one of the biggest letdowns for PBKS in the ongoing IPL.
From being in contention as one of India's first-choice wicketkeepers, Sharma has slowly gone off the radar with just 128 runs from eight innings at an average of 16.00 and a modest strike rate of 125.49 in this IPL.
His highest score this season has been 29 and in three matches he has not been able to cross single digits.
Joshi blamed it on being "haunted" by the pressure of performing to meet the expectations.
"Jitesh is a quality batter and we all know that the time has come for him to fire tomorrow. And yes, of course, there are multiple players in the whole IPL.
"They are all eager to be in the T20 World Cup squad. But at times, most of the players are in that phase that (the thought of) making it to the Indian team will always keep haunting. So, it's about focusing on basic, right things."
Asked what's his message to Sharma, he said: "Finally, you got to perform. You have to look at one ball at a time, you can't look beyond. You're playing in IPL, you got to focus on match by match, ball by ball, rest leave it to the selectors." Joshi further said the pressure would be on KKR to perform and win playing at home as they would look to "play freely".
"We've come out of home. The pressure should be on the home team now so we can play freely and get runs," he said.

While Dhawan is set to miss Thursday's match against Mumbai Indians, Dhawan also remains doubtful for the April 21 game against Gujarat Titans.

Sam Curran stood in as Punjab Kings captain in Dhawan's absence in their match against the Rajasthan Royals.
While he is set to miss Thursday's match against Mumbai Indians, Dhawan also remains doubtful for the April 21 game against Gujarat Titans.
"Regarding Shikhar, the medical team will update. As for now, he is under rehab," Joshi said at the pre-match press conference.
Dhawan hasn't had a great time with the bat in IPL 2024, but is still Kings' highest run-getter currently with 152 runs from five innings, scoring at a strike rate of 125.61.
Joshi also said it's high time the top-order batters find their groove and lift the team that is struggling at seventh place with just two wins and four losses.
The only bright spot for PBKS this season has been resolute displays from their unsung Indian players Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma, who both bat lower in the order and have had to make up for the shortcomings at the top more than once.
"See it's always like bowlers win tournaments, batsmen win matches. And our bowling unit is definitely doing well consistently in all the areas. It's time our batters take responsibility," Joshi said.
"We have addressed the areas where we needed to look at, to score runs. And also coming into this wicket, it's a challenge for batters also.
"Straightway, unlike other wickets in India, this is a challenging wickets for every batter, especially for the visitors, it's going to be a challenge because the nature of bounce is completely different. So, it's advantage for us, I guess," the former India left-arm spinner added.
Jonny Bairstow, Dhawan's opening partner, has had a rough time too, scoring just 96 runs in six innings, while Prabhsimran Singh (119 runs in six innings) and Jitesh Sharma (106 runs in six innings) have struggled for consistency and impact also.
With selection for the World Cup squad on the horizon, Jitesh, who is averaging 17.66, would be under the pump.
"In T20s, when you go through the first half of the tournament you will understand what sort of an approach you need to look at.
"At the same time you need to look at the target and whether you can approach it in a different way to approach that target because we have done well in the middle and we have had a great finish.
"Two new boys -- Shashank and Ashutos -- have chipped in. It's time for the top-order to get into the groove and do a good job for us." PBKS will have to find more support for their overseas bowling duo of Curran (126 runs and 8 wickets) and Kagiso Rabada (9). The Indian pair of Arshdeep Singh (9) and Harshal Patel (7) have both been easy targets for batters.
"In T20 anything can happen, even the last over what you saw yesterday (between KKR and RR), but nevertheless, they will all come back stronger.
"They know the conditions better, especially (Harpreet) Brar, because he has played and he plays domestic cricket in the same ground. He understands, and hopefully, he will come back stronger," Joshi said.
He added, "Each and every game is important and always our thought process is that we should strive to do well. If we look at the our last three games, they lasted till the last over, fifth ball of last over. So, it can be anybody's match, especially in this format.
"Our endeavour is to always take the match deep. Definitely, we have not done well in batting in power play, and we have addressed that issue."

Shikhar Dhawan's 11-year marriage with Ayesha Mukherjee officially ended on Wednesday as the family court of Delhi granted the India cricketer divorce.

Shikhar Dhawan's 11-year marriage with Ayesha Mukherjee officially ended on Wednesday as the family court of Delhi granted the India cricketer divorce.
The court stated that Dhawan was entitled to a decree of divorce on the grounds of cruelty.
'There is no dispute that both parties had agreed to take divorce by mutual consent and that their marriage is otherwise dead long ago and have not been living as husband and wife since August 8, 2020,' the court added.
Shikar Dhawan through plea stated that he discovered post-marriage that the primary reason for the respondent to induce the petitioner into marrying her was merely to extort crores of rupees from him. Shortly after the marriage, the respondent threatened to fabricate defamatory and false material against the petitioner and circulate the same to destroy the reputation and cricketing career of the petitioner if he did not comply with her demands for money.

Senior India batter Shikhar Dhawan was a "bit shocked" at his exclusion from India's Asian Games squad but remains determined to make a national comeback in the near future.

The 37-year-old left-hander was tipped to lead the second-string India team in China, a role he performed until 10 months ago, but the selectors did not pick him and named Ruturaj Gaikwad as captain.
"When my name was not there (for Asian Games), I was a bit shocked. But, then, I was like they have a different thought process, you just have to accept it. Happy that Rutu (Gaikwad) will lead the side. All the young boys are there, I am sure they will do well," Dhawan told PTI on Thursday.
With Shubman Gill joining Rohit Sharma at the top, it seems the Indian team has moved on from Dhawan, who had become a one-format player until he was dropped from the ODI side following the Bangladesh tour in December 2022.
The ever-optimistic Dhawan, who has been among India's leading ODI batters over the past decade, said he can't foresee what is in store for him but will be ready if an opportunity knocks on the door.
"I will be ready, of course (for the comeback). That is why I keep myself fit (so whenever I get a chance I am ready). There is always a chance whether it is one percent or 20 percent.
"I still enjoy training and I still enjoy the game, these are the things in my control. Whatever decision is made, I respect that," said the southpaw who remains a centrally-contracted cricketer and spends a lot of time at the National Cricket Academy.
If the India comeback doesn't happen, Dhawan has an IPL trophy to win for Punjab Kings. He also expressed his keenness to play in the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy and 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy before the IPL.
"I have not spoken to any selector (about my future). I keep going to NCA. I enjoy my time there, the facilities are great. NCA has shaped my career and I am grateful for it.
"Also I have to prepare for the IPL. I will be playing the Syed Mushtaq Ali and, hopefully, the Vijay Hazare as well," he said referring to the two domestic tournaments.
Tough to maintain flow as one-format player =========================== Dhawan was playing only ODIs before being sidelined from the team. He said that turning up at the highest level in a single format can negatively impact the game.
"You keep getting breaks and you have to come back. But if you think it is difficult, it will be difficult. I never thought like that. At the same time, when the other players are involved in multiple formats, the flow (in the game) is a bit more and that matters a lot. If they do well, then it strikes in your eyes as well (attracts attention)." With more than 10,000 international runs in his kitty, Dhawan has a lot to be grateful for. It is highly unlikely that he will get to feature in his third straight ODI World Cup but he is prepared to embrace whatever comes his way.
"I am in a very happy state of mind. When you play the World Cup it is a great feeling. I am very blessed to have such an amazing career and contribute to the Indian team.
"At this stage, you go year by year. Physically I am very fit and I have an IPL to win for Punjab Kings. Hopefully, we can do that next year," said Dhawan, who has three World Cup hundreds to his name.
As he is not part of the Indian team anymore, Dhawan has a lot more time at his disposal. Besides working on his game and fitness, he spends a lot of time on his varied commercial ventures, which fall under the Da One Group umbrella.
"It is important to be productive. We live quite a high-paced life, especially when you are playing all formats like I used to at one point. Now I have enough time, so I keep myself involved with my business interests.
"I train well and don't sit at home and make sure it doesn't get into my head. Working on my fitness and my body gives me a lot of positivity." I would go with Surya at number four
With question marks over the fitness of Shreyas Iyer, the number four position in the Indian ODI set-up is up for grabs ahead of the World Cup. Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson are the contenders while R Ashwin thinks rookie batter Tilak Varma can be a good choice at that position.
"I would go with Surya at four as he is an experienced player and has been playing international cricket for a while.
"Also, really looking forward to see how Shubman Gill does in the World Cup. Another batter to watch out for will be Rohit Sharma as he did exceptionally well in the last World Cup," he said referring to Rohit's five hundreds in the 2019 edition.
On India's chances in the World Cup, he added, "We have got a very good side which has the right blend of experience and youth. We will have the home advantage. We know the grounds and pitches and that is going to come in very handy."
