From heartbreaks to history, Indian women&rsquo;s cricket completed its long, unfinished journey to glory as Harmanpreet Kaur&rsquo;s fearless team outlasted South Africa by 52 runs in a gripping final to lift their first-ever ICC Women's World Cup crown in Navi Mumbai on Sunday.&nbsp;
Indian women's cricket finally touched its Everest as years of toil and near-misses culminated in an evening of redemption and history for the hosts. India's breakthrough in the 13th edition of the global showpiece made them only the fourth team to win the trophy, joining Australia (7), England (4) and New Zealand (1) in the pantheon of champions.&nbsp;
With the victory, Harmanpreet&rsquo;s team finally buried the ghosts of past heartbreaks &mdash; the 2005 and 2017 finals &mdash; and delivered India&rsquo;s much-awaited World title, a watershed moment for the game in the country. After posting 298 for 7 &mdash; the second-highest total in tournament history &mdash; India held their nerve to bundle out South Africa for 246 in 45.3 overs.&nbsp;
The Proteas&rsquo; charge revolved around captain Laura Wolvaardt&rsquo;s magnificent 98-ball 101, but the brilliance of Deepti Sharma (55 and 5/39) and Shafali Verma (87 and 2/36) ensured India&rsquo;s moment of destiny could not be denied.
Deepti, Shafali script India&rsquo;s golden night
Fittingly, India&rsquo;s triumph was shaped by two players with contrasting journeys. Deepti, the ever-reliable workhorse, finished as the tournament&rsquo;s highest wicket-taker (21) and bowled with guile and grace on the grandest stage. Shafali, on the other hand, was a story of second chances &mdash; drafted into the squad from outside the preferred group after Pratika Rawal&rsquo;s injury.&nbsp;
Confined to domestic cricket with Haryana weeks ago, the 21-year-old dynamo returned to the world stage with an innings of audacity and maturity &mdash; 87 off 84 balls &mdash; before taking two crucial wickets to tilt the game decisively India&rsquo;s way.
Her re-entry into the XI proved a masterstroke as she and Smriti Mandhana (45) gave India the perfect launchpad with a 104-run opening stand, forcing South Africa&rsquo;s bowlers into disarray after a two-hour rain delay. Mandhana&rsquo;s dismissal denied her a half-century, but it capped off a record-breaking campaign &mdash; 434 runs at 54.25, the most by any Indian batter in Women&rsquo;s World Cup history, including a century and two fifties.&nbsp;
Star of India's semifinal win over mighty Australia, Jemimah appeared to be prepping up for another long haul in the middle, but a superb low catch from skipper Laura Wolvaardt at cover off Khaka foiled her plans in the 30th over. With two set batters back in the dugout, India's hopes were pinned on skipper Harmanpreet for a defining innings, but that was not to be.
Proteas resist, India stand tall
South Africa began their reply briskly, with Tazmin Brits (23) and Wolvaardt adding 51 for the first wicket. But the breakthrough came via Amanjot Kaur&rsquo;s direct hit, and from there, India&rsquo;s bowlers tightened the noose.&nbsp;
Shree Charani&rsquo;s immaculate lines on a placid surface fetched Anneke Bosch&rsquo;s wicket, before Shafali&rsquo;s double strike rattled the middle order. When Wolvaardt threatened to take the game away, Deepti struck twice in four balls &mdash; removing the Proteas skipper and Chloe Tryon (9) &mdash; to break the spine of the chase. She fittingly applied the finishing touch, dismissing Nadine de Klerk for her fifth wicket to spark celebrations of a lifetime.
A victory for generations
The night was soaked in symbolism. Harmanpreet lifted the trophy that eluded Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami, India&rsquo;s torchbearers for over two decades. For the younger generation led by Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh, it marked the dawn of a new era &mdash; one where Indian women&rsquo;s cricket finally stood shoulder to shoulder with the sport&rsquo;s powerhouses.
As fireworks lit up the Navi Mumbai sky, the emotion on Harmanpreet&rsquo;s face said it all. The wait was over. From heartbreak to history, India&rsquo;s women had finally rewritten their story &mdash; and this time, they wrote it in gold. If June 25, 1983 was a watershed moment for Indian men's cricket, when Kapil's Devils beat the mighty West Indies at the Lord's, November 2, 2025 will be a seminal moment for women's cricket movement.
Rohit Sharma, who carries the scars of November 19, 2023, was watching the final from the stands with a prayer on his lips that Harmanpreet Kaur doesn't meet his fate. For Harmanpreet, the lady who has done way more for Indian women's cricket than anyone can envisage, knows how much it hurts to lose a final as it happened eight summers back and her girls didn't let her down. As she latched on to Nadine de Klerk's offering while back pedaling at extra cover, Ian Bishop fittingly called the moment "inspiring generations".&nbsp;
For head coach Amol Muzumdar, who couldn't wear the whites that he richly deserved, the global triumph with the women's national team would certainly heal those wounds that he has carried for years.

The big-hitting Shafali Verma led the way with a blazing 37-ball-71 as a dominant Delhi Capitals secured direct qualification into the final of the Women's Premier League with a 7-wicket hammering of Gujarat Giants on Wednesday.
Table-toppers Delhi Capitals entered the game looking to bag a direct spot in the final and once their bowlers restricted Giants to 126/9 with a disciplined show at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the hosts inched closer to realising their goal.
In the final on Sunday, the Capitals will play the winner of the eliminator between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
As she is wont to, Shafali launched into a furry of boundaries, including hitting as many as five sixes and seven fours, to help her side complete the chase of 127 without much ado.
DC finished the game with as many as 41 balls remaining.
Shafali reached her fifty in just 28 balls. She got to the landmark with a four over extra cover off Mannat Kashyap.
The duo of Shafali and Jemimah Rodrigues (38 not out) then bludgeoned Meghna Singh for 20 runs, and Ashleigh Gardner was also carted for 28 runs in two overs.
Earlier, Delhi Capitals' bowlers produced a fine effort to restrict Gujarat Giants to a modest total.
If it was not for Bharati Fulmali's 36-ball 42 and Kathryn Bryce's unbeaten 28, the Giants would have finished with a much lower total.
South African veteran Marizanne Kapp led the way with fine figures of 2/17 in four overs, bowling beautifully in the powerplay, while there were also two wickets apiece for Shikha Pandey and Minnu Mani.
Gugarat Giants' decision to bat first on winning the toss backfired as they found themselves in a spot of bother at 12/2 in the fourth over, including losing the big wicket of skipper Beth Mooney for a duck to South African all-rounder Kapp in the match's very first over.
Mooney shaped up to flick a length delivery on the leg stump but the ball brushed past her thigh pad before going on to disturb the leg and middle stump.
Dayalan Hemalatha (4) was the next batter to depart, bowled by Jess Jonassen as Delhi Capitals rejoiced the early success.
Another setback awaited the Giants as they lost Laura Wolvaardt (7), the successful bowler being Kapp again as the visitors slumped to 16 for three in the beginning of the fifth over.
Unable to force the pace, Wolvaardt was under pressure and succumbed in the face of some disciplined bowling by Kapp.
Experienced Australian player Ashleigh Gardner (12) and Phoebe Litchfield (21) looked to steady the innings but having added 23 runs for the fourth wicket, the former perished to a lovely flighted delivery from off-spinner Mani.
The Giants were tottering at 39 for four in the ninth over and the situation became worse for them when Radha Yadav pulled off a nice catch to send back Litchfield off the bowling of Mani.
At 48 for five in the 11th over, the Giants were in a hopeless situation but Fulmali and Kathryn Bryce put on 68 runs to help the side cross 120 and give their bowlers something to defend.

Incidentally, it is India's first-ever ICC title in women's cricket.
The victorious team will reach Mumbai from South Africa on Tuesday and then will head to Ahmedabad on Wednesday for the felicitation ceremony.
The felicitation ceremony will be held on the sidelines of the deciding third and final T20I between India and New Zealand here.&nbsp;

Shafali told ICC that she will look to take the winning confidence and will now shift her focus towards winning the senior World Cup as well.

Not content with the U-19 T20 World Cup triumph, batting sensation Shafali Verma has already set her sights on replicating the success with the senior women's team in less than two weeks' time.
She will get her chance when the Women's T20 World Cup gets underway from February 10 in South Africa, the same country where the country just won the inaugural U-19 world tournament.
Shafali, 19, has already established herself in India's senior side and wants to make the visit to South Africa even more memorable with another silverware.
"No, the big one also," Shafali said when asked if the U-19 trophy was the only one she was hoping to take back from South Africa.
"I am someone who focuses on task at hand. When I entered the Under-19s, I only focused on winning the Under-19 Cup and we have won that today (Sunday).
"I will look to take this winning confidence with me and win the senior World Cup. I will try and forget this and get involved with the senior setup and gel with the team and win the World Cup," she was quoted as saying by the ICC.
India on Sunday won their maiden ICC title in women's cricket as a bunch of supremely talented teenagers lifted the inaugural U-19 World Cup with a seven-wicket victory over England.
The Shafali-led India squad managed to do what their seniors could not by clearing the final hurdle in a global event.
India first bundled out England for 68 in 17.1 overs and then returned to knock off the paltry target in 14 overs to lift the coveted trophy.
Shafali was part of India's squad that fell at the final hurdle at the 2020 T20 World Cup, when Australia defeated the side by 85 runs in front of more than 85,000 fans at the MCG.
She said she still feels the pain from the loss.
"Melbourne was a very emotional day for me in that final game, we didn't win the game," Shafali recalled.
"When I joined the Under-19 team, I'm just thinking, 'you know, we have to win this Cup.' I'm just telling all the girls, 'We have to win this Cup, we are here for the Cup.' "We had lost the World Cup and it was tears of sadness. Today, they were tears of happiness because we achieved what we came here for.
"I tried controlling it but it couldn't happen. I will look at this as a big achievement and look to use this to learn something more. I will try to score more runs for India and am not going to be satisfied with this Cup. This is just the beginning.

After opting to bat first the South African women set a challenging target of 167 which India chased down with ease. Shweta Sehrawat &amp; Shafali Verma, the Indian opening pair provided a blazing start to India. The team achieved the target within 17 overs as the duo did most of the work with Sehrawat punching an impressive 92 not out and Shafali scoring a quickfire 16-ball 45 which included 9 fours and a six.&nbsp;
Earlier, the Indian captain, Verma also starred with the ball, picking up 2 wickets as South Africa scored 166/5 in the first innings. With 61 in 44 balls, Simone Lourens scored the maximum for the home team.&nbsp;

BCCI have announced the Indian squad for the Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa.
The Women in Blue have made two changes to the squad that lost 1-4 to Australia recently.
Pacer Shikha Pandey returns to the side, with Meghna Singh dropping into the reserves.
All-rounder Pooja Vastrakar is also part of the squad but her availability is subject to fitness. Sabbhineni Meghna &amp; Sneh Rana though have been included as reserves.
Meanwhile, Newcomers Devika Vaidya &amp; Anjali Sarvani have been rewarded for their performances against Australia and will be on the plane to South Africa.

18-year-old Shafali Verma was named as the captain of the Indian women's team for the ICC U-19 World Cup in South Africa.
Shafali will lead the 15-member Indian squad in the inaugural edition of the women's U-19 World Cup, scheduled to start on January 14 next year.
Hard-hitting opening batter Shafali will also lead India Under-19s against the South Africa Under-19s in 5 T20 games from December 27 to January 4 in Pretoria. These 5 games will be very crucial as far as preparations for the Under-19 World Cup are concerned.
Shafali has played two Tests, 21 ODIs and 46 T20Is after making her debut in the senior national team in 2019.
Wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh is the other senior India player picked in the under-19 World Cup squad.

Chasing a daunting 188-run target, Mandhana and Shafali Verma started off with a powerful opening stand of 76 runs.

Even as India lost wickets in search of big runs, Richa and Devika Vaidya's lusty blows at the death helped the Women In Blue tie the game.
The Super Over was again ruled by Mandhana who got a chance to redeem herself for not finishing the game earlier.
Needing 21 runs to win the match in Super Over, Alyssa Healy smacked the first ball for four.
However, Renuka Thakur held her nerves and stopped mighty Australia to just 16 runs, ending Australia's winning streak in 2022.
Earlier, Tahlia McGrath (70 not out off 51) and Beth Mooney (82 not out off 54) tore into the Indian bowling attack with their belligerent knocks to power Australia to 187 for one after the visitors were put in to bat first.
