Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal on Saturday said she was sexually assaulted by her father in her childhood and the trauma led her to fight for the rights of women.
Speaking to reporters after the DCW International Women's Day Awards ceremony here, Maliwal said she faced abuse till the time she was in Class 4.
"I was sexually assaulted by my father when I was a child. I was very small at that time. My father used to beat me up and I used to hide under the bed to save myself," she said.
"While hiding under the bed, I used to think how I will teach a lesson to such men who abuse women and children, and how I can help women get their rights," she said.

The MC Mary Kom-led panel that was earlier asked to submit its report in 4 weeks, has been given another 2-week extension and will now submit its report by March 9.&nbsp;
The committee responsible for the day-to-day functioning of WFI was formed after a sit-in protest by top Indian wrestlers, including Vinesh Phogat, Bajrang Punia &amp; Sakshi Malik, who were demanding the removal of Singh as the federation's president.
Since the formation of the committee, the top Indian wrestlers have not competed at the international meets, missing the Ranking Series events in Zagreb and Alexandria.

Cop arrested for allegedly molesting IIT student in Navi Mumbai

The incident took place on Palm Beach Road in Sanpada in the early hours of Friday, an official said.

A police constable has been arrested for allegedly molesting a 19-year-old woman student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay in neighbouring Navi Mumbai, police said on Saturday.

As per the woman's complaint, she arrived in Sanpada area from the IIT campus in Powai in Mumbai late Thursday night to meet a male classmate.
After strolling on Palm Beach Road, they decided to return to IIT by taking the first local train of the day at 4.08 am, and to kill time by roaming in the area till then.
A police team in a patrolling vehicle questioned them around 3 am and left when they showed their ID cards and explained why they were there.
A constable arrived on a two-wheeler a few minutes later and started questioning them, the complaint said.

He allegedly asked the male student to sit on the motorcycle and leave the woman behind, but the latter refused.
When he asked the woman to sit on the two-wheeler and she too declined, the police constable allegedly molested her, and tried to force her to accept the ride.
A car driver on the road stopped his vehicle and came to their help.
The constable was then taken to Sanpada police station where the woman lodged a complaint.
After she and her friend returned to the IIT, a First Information Report under section 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the constable.
The FIR was transferred to Sanpada police station following which the constable was arrested.
The accused's blood samples were collected to check if he was under the influence of alcohol, the official said, adding that further probe is on.

The Delhi High Court recently dismissed a bail plea by a man accused of raping his fiance on multiple occassions, saying that merely because the parties were engaged did not mean that the accused could have sexually assaulted, beaten or threatened the victim.

The woman has also alleged that the accused forcibly gave her pills to abort her consequent pregnancy.&nbsp;

National coach RK Sharma, who was dismissed recently after India’s top cyclist accused him of sexual harassment, is facing another allegation of objectionable behavior by International gold medallist Deborah Herold. 
While speaking to The Indian Express, the national champion said that she was removed from the national team, after the team’s assistant coach, Gautamani Devi ‘thought she was in a relationship with another female cyclist’. 
Clarifying that Devi misunderstood their relationship, the Andaman-based cyclist spoke about the discomfort she faced before being removed from the national camp. The 27-year-old said that the coach & the assistant coach constantly harassed her by ignoring her, taunting her, and eventually she was also isolated from the rest of the cyclists. 
Herold was removed from the team in 2018, when she was the country’s fastest cyclist in 200m sprint and 500m time trial events. 
The National champion also accused Sharma of ‘slapping’ her in 2015. ‘The ac in my room was not working, I went to a fellow boy’s room for which he slapped me twice, she said.
Apart from Herold, 2 other members of the national team have also accused Sharma of ‘constantly harassing and threatening them’ which they said, affected their performance over the years. 
Sports Authority of India dismissed RK Sharma from his position after a top cyclist alleged that the coach forced her to stay in his room, offered her a post-training massage, forcefully tried to pull her towards himself, and asked her to sleep with him during a camp in Slovenia in May.

An Indian cyclist has accused the national sprint team chief coach, RK Sharma of inappropriate behaviour, during her Slovenia camp, as per a report in The Indian Express. The Indian cyclist who has now been brought back to India on the orders of the Sports Authority of India (SAI) had reportedly complained to the SAI and the Cycling Federation of India. Both the bodies did not reveal the name of the complainant and have formed separate inquiry committees to look into the allegations. As per the report, CFI in its statement said that they have identified the complainant and coach, and they now stand with the complainant. 'Following the complaint by the athlete, SAI has immediately brought her back to India to ensure her safety and has also constituted a committee to investigate the matter',SAI said.

Forcibly kissing someone on the lips, and touching private parts are not unnatural offences under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code. The Bombay High Court reportedly said this while granting bail to a man accused of sexually assaulting a 14-year-old boy.
The man was arrested last year after the boy's father filed a police complaint. The boy used to visit the accused man's shop in Mumbai for recharging an online game 'Ola Party', according to news agency PTI.
The boy claimed that one day when he visited the shop, he was forcibly kissed, and his private parts were touched. Subsequently, the man was booked under IPC Section 377, and some sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences, or POCSO, Act.
IPC 377 pertains to "carnal intercourse against the order of nature with any man, woman, or animal". It carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
Bombay High Court's Justice Anuja Prabhudessai said that the element of unnatural sex was not prima facie applicable. The judge also said that a medical test conducted on the boy did not support his statement of sexual assault.

The man then proceeded to undress himself, muttering obscenities at one of the students and later also urinated in front of the class, the statement further alleged. When the incident was brought to the attention of the school authorities by the survivors, they were reportedly told to keep quiet and forget about it, DCW added. 
The commission has sent notices to Delhi Police and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) commissioner demanding action against the accused. It has also issued a statement to the school for allegedly hiding the incident. 
Delhi Police said they have registered a case under sections of the POCSO Act and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused. They said a case was registered the same day. 
The women's body demanded a copy of the First Information Report (FIR), details of the accused, and probe details from the police. They also asked the police whether they had booked the school authorities under the POCSO Act. It has also summoned the East MCD commissioner in connection with the matter and demanded a detailed action report.
A statement by the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) said that the matter is being investigated and any allegations, lapses or wrongdoing, if recorded, will be probed and appropriate action will be taken against school authorities.

The "bane of live-in relationship", a "byproduct" of rights conferred under Article 21 of the Constitution, is leading to a rise in sexual offences and promiscuity, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has said. Justice Subodh Abhyankar of the Indore bench of the high court made the observation while rejecting a pre-arrest (anticipatory) bail plea of a 25-year-old man accused of raping a woman. In the order dated April 12, the court said, “Taking note of the spurt of such offences in recent times arising out of live-in relationships, this court is forced to observe that the bane of live-in-relationship is a by-product of Constitutional guarantee as provided under Art. 21, engulfing the ethos of Indian society, and promoting lascivious behaviour, giving further rise to sexual offences.” Article 21 guarantees the right to life and personal liberty. The courts, over the years, have widened its ambit to cover many things including the right to dignity and privacy. Highlighting the rise in legal disputes arising out of live-in relationships, the high court said, “Those who wanted to exploit this freedom are quick to embrace it, but are totally ignorant that it has its own limitations, and does not confer any right on any of the partners to such relationship." The case diary and documents revealed that the complainant woman got pregnant more than twice and aborted the foetus under pressure from the applicant (her then live-in partner), the court noted. When their relationship fell apart, the woman got engaged to some other person, but the applicant, "being a jilted lover" resorted to blackmailing her, the judge said. The applicant even sent video messages to the would-be in-laws of the woman where he threatened that he would commit suicide and they would also be held responsible for it besides the woman's family, the court noted. This led to the cancellation of the woman's marriage, the high court said, citing the prosecution's case. Amit Singh Sisodia argued on behalf of the state government in this case.

The case diary and documents revealed that the complainant woman got pregnant more than twice and aborted the foetus under pressure from the applicant (her then live-in partner), the court noted.&nbsp; When their relationship fell apart, the woman got engaged to some other person, but the applicant, "being a jilted lover" resorted to blackmailing her, the judge said.&nbsp; The applicant even sent video messages to the would-be in-laws of the woman where he threatened that he would commit suicide and they would also be held responsible for it besides the woman's family, the court noted.&nbsp; This led to the cancellation of the woman's marriage, the high court said, citing the prosecution's case.&nbsp; Amit Singh Sisodia argued on behalf of the state government in this case.
