The Sikkim government has introduced a special leave scheme for its permanent and temporary employees to increase work productivity.
The &lsquo;Sabbatical Leave&rsquo; scheme aims to provide extended leave opportunities to employees while ensuring that there is no break in service.
The scheme was announced on April 7 by the Department of Personnel.
A sabbatical is an extended leave or break from work an employee takes without losing continuity in service. It can be paid or unpaid.
The leave will allow the employees to pursue personal or professional endeavours, including business.
The scheme will allow employees to pursue further studies and diplomas, or receive specialised training in their respective fields of work, making them more qualified and efficient, sources said.
This initiative is part of the government's ongoing efforts to support personal and professional growth among its workforce, the CM had said earlier.
Monday's circular also outlines details such as eligibility criteria, terms and conditions.
The heads of departments (HoDs) are authorised to approve the sabbatical for the Group C and D employees, including all temporary staff, according to the notification.
For the Group A and B employees, the secretary of the Department of Personnel has been designated as the approving authority.
The temporary employees will become eligible for a sabbatical after completing a minimum of six months in service.
The government has also emphasised the importance of maintaining sufficient staff when employees are on leave to ensure the smooth functioning of all departments, the circular said.

The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday said it is set to take its flagship One District One Product (ODOP) scheme to unprecedented heights in 2025-26 and has finalised category-wise budget allocations to enhance its effectiveness.
With a comprehensive and visionary action plan in place, the initiative aims to deepen the impact of entrepreneurship, self-employment, and skill development across the state, an official statement said.
"The new roadmap includes provisions for financing for self-employment, skill upgradation, and toolkits, ensuring holistic support to local artisans and entrepreneurs.
"This strengthened ODOP model is expected to create vast employment opportunities and reinforce Uttar Pradesh's emergence as a key player on the nation's economic map," the UP government said.
Targets will be set for each district, and pending cases will be renewed and forwarded to banks for the 2024-25 period, it said.
Additionally, disbursal will be ensured for loans that have been approved but not yet distributed. Under the scheme, 20 per cent of the annual target will be approved and distributed, it added.
"Beneficiaries who successfully established enterprises through the first phase of loans will now be eligible for a second loan. A new system will be introduced by amending the government policy to provide these loans. This initiative will particularly benefit entrepreneurs who have made significant strides with limited resources," it added.
The government said that to further elevate the ODOP program, the government is working towards getting the ODOP 2.0 action plan approved.
Building on previous experiences, current schemes will be simplified. The inauguration of Common Facility Center (CFC) projects in Unnao, Bijnor, and Gonda is planned, with new projects also in the pipeline.
The ODOP scheme will be expanded to include new aspects of branding, packaging, marketing, and quality enhancement. With the support of sectoral experts, the state's special products will be promoted on both national and international platforms.
Additionally, efforts are underway to integrate traditional food items from various districts into the formal economy, it said.
The scheme has allocated a budget for training, toolkits, and skill upgradation. District-wise annual targets will be set, and trainees will be selected through the e-portal. The list of beneficiaries will be shared with selected training institutes for further action, it added.

Under the visionary leadership of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, a total of 196 modern libraries have been successfully established and are operational in rural areas of the state as part of the &ldquo;Rural Library Scheme&rdquo;, aimed at promoting a reading culture among youth and involving them in the socio-economic progress of Punjab.
Additionally, 135 more libraries equipped with modern facilities are currently under construction.
Punjab Rural Development and Panchayats Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond shared that the Chief Minister had launched this ambitious scheme on August 15, 2024, from village Issru (Khanna).
On that day, the Chief Minister inaugurated the first library built under this scheme and interacted with school children, emphasizing his vision of transforming rural libraries into pillars of growth and prosperity in the state.
Highlighting the initiative&rsquo;s purpose, the Minister said that these libraries aim to foster a love for reading among the youth and create an environment for intellectual and personal development.
He expressed confidence that these libraries will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of Punjab's youth, helping them become successful officers, scientists, doctors, and technical experts.
Providing district-wise progress, the Minister informed that Amritsar district has 4 operational libraries, while Bathinda has 29. Barnala has 6 operational libraries and 5 under construction.
In Fatehgarh Sahib, 10 libraries are functional and 2 are under progress. Faridkot has 5 operational and 7 under construction, while Fazilka boasts 21 operational libraries and 9 under development. In Ferozepur, work is underway on 22 libraries.
Hoshiarpur has 2 operational libraries and 13 under construction. Ludhiana features 15 operational and 26 under development. Mansa has 8 libraries functioning and 10 under construction. Malerkotla has 6 operational libraries and 5 more being built.
In Sri Muktsar Sahib, work is progressing on 6 libraries. Moga has 13 libraries currently operational and 1 under progress, while Patiala has 18 functional libraries and 11 under construction. Rupnagar has 12 operational libraries and 1 under progress.
In Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, 6 libraries are running successfully, while in Shahibzada Ajit Singh Nagar, 12 libraries are under development.
Sangrur leads with the highest number of libraries, with 28 currently operational and 5 more under construction. In Tarn Taran, 11 libraries are running, and Jalandhar has 2 functional libraries.
These libraries have been equipped with high-end facilities like Wi-Fi, solar power, digital analogs and others. These libraries have world-class books on contemporary literature and curriculum books, providing a rich learning experience.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday attacked the government asking why no data has been maintained on healthcare staff who were affected by Covid-19 or died from it. Rahul said it is an insult to corona warriors of the country. The Congress leader's jibe comes after Minister of State for Health Ashwini Choubey informed the Rajya Sabha this week that health is a state subject and so data is not maintained by the Centre. Referring to PM's campaigns honouring 'corona warriors', Gandhi tweeted, safety and respect of healthcare workers is more important than beating plates or lighting lamps. According to the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Package Insurance Scheme for healthcare workers fighting Covid-19, as many as 155 healthcare staff, including 64 doctors, have died due to the infection.
