Scientists develop eco-friendly plastic film that can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus

The film is coated with a thin layer of particles that absorb ultraviolet (UV) light and produce reactive oxygen species -- ROS.

Scientists in the UK have developed a plastic film that can kill the SARS-CoV-2 virus particles which land on its surface with just room light.
The self-sterilising film developed by a team at Queen's University Belfast, UK, is less costly to produce, can be readily scaled and used for disposable aprons, tablecloths, and curtains in hospitals.
The film is coated with a thin layer of particles that absorb ultraviolet (UV) light and produce reactive oxygen species -- ROS.
These kill viruses, including SARS-CoV-2, the researchers said. The technology used to create the film also ensures it is degradable -- unlike the current disposable plastic films -- making it environment-friendly, the researchers said.
The research, published in the Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, could lead to a significant reduction in the transmission of viruses in healthcare environments but also in other settings that uses plastic films.
The researchers tested the film for anti-viral activity using four different viruses -- two strains of influenza A virus, a highly-stable picornavirus called EMCV and SARS-CoV-2.
They exposed the film to either UVA radiation or with light from a cool white light fluorescent lamp. The researchers found that the film is effective at killing all of the viruses - even in a room lit with just white fluorescent tubes. SARS-CoV-2 was particularly prone to photocatalytic inactivation even under very low UV irradiation conditions, they said.
"This film could replace many of the disposable plastic films used in the healthcare industry as it has the added value of being self-sterilising at no real extra cost," said Professor Andrew Mills from Queen's University Belfast.
"Through rigorous testing we have found that it is effective at killing viruses with just room light &ndash; this is the first time that anything like this has been developed and we hope that it will be a huge benefit to society,&rdquo; Mills said. The researchers noted that pathogenic viruses like SARS-CoV-2 and influenza will continue to be global problem for years to come.
"In developing self-sterilising thin plastic films, we have created a low-cost technology that could have a significant impact on the transmission of such concerning viruses in a healthcare environment and other sectors where they are used," Professor Andrew Mills added.

The active cases constitute 0.05 per cent of the total infections. The country's COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.74 per cent, the health ministry said.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease rose to 4,25,38,976, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.22 per cent.
The cumulative doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive has exceeded 189.23 crore.

To test whether masks work in blocking the virus from being transmitted among people, the study measured the amount of&nbsp;SARS-CoV-2 virus that is exhaled by the infected subject first without a mask, and then after putting on a cloth or surgical mask.&nbsp;
The researchers found that covering the face and mouth using masks reduced the amount of virus that got into the air by about 50%. The study compared the original form of SARS-CoV-2 to the Alpha variant,&nbsp;the dominant one when experimentation was conducted&nbsp;and was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases.
As research indicates that successive variants keep getting better at traveling through the air, better ventilation and tight-fitting masks, in addition to vaccination, can help offset the increased risk.

This grim statistic has emerged from the first national serosurvey conducted by the ICMR and published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research. The survey was conducted from May 11 to June 4 and covered 28,000 individuals whose blood samples were tested for Covid antibodies. The low prevalence observed in most districts indicates that India is in early phase of the epidemic and the majority of the population is still susceptible to Covid-19 infection, the survey report stressed.

New Delhi, PTI: More than 64 lakh adults in India were exposed to Covid-19 by early May. This grim statistic has emerged from the first national serosurvey conducted by the ICMR and published in the Indian Journal of Medical Research.
The survey was conducted from May 11 to June 4 and covered 28,000 individuals whose blood samples were tested for Covid antibodies using Covid Kavach ELISA kit.
Also, seropositivity was the highest in the age group of 18-45 years (43.3 per cent), followed by those between 46-60 years (39.5 per cent) and it was the lowest among those aged above 60 (17.2 per cent).
A total of 64,68,388 adult infections were estimated in India by the early May, the survey report said.
"The findings of our survey indicated that the overall seroprevalence in India was low, with less than one per cent of the adult population exposed to SARS-CoV-2 by mid-May 2020.
"The low prevalence observed in most districts indicates that India is in early phase of the epidemic and the majority of the Indian population is still susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection," the survey report stressed.
It highlighted the need to continue to implement the context-specific containment measures including the testing of all symptomatics, isolating positive cases and tracing high-risk contacts to slow transmission and to prevent the overburdening of the health system.
Males, living in urban slums and occupation with high risk of exposure to potentially infected persons were associated with seropositivity.
According to the survey report, seroprevalence ranged between 0.62 and 1.03 per cent across the four strata of districts.
The stratification of districts as zero cases (15 districts), low (22 districts), medium (16) and high (17) was done on the basis of the reported number of COVID-19 cases as on April 25.
Based on the overall adjusted seroprevalence of 0.73 per cent and reported number of Covid-19 cases, it was estimated that for every RT-PCR confirmed case of Covid-19 there were 82-130 infections in India.
As part of the survey, a total of 30,283 households were visited from 700 clusters in 70 districts across the four strata. About one-fourth (25.9 per cent) of the surveyed clusters were from urban areas. A total of 28,000 individuals consented to participate, the report stated.
