Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Tuesday announced that translation services in Parliament have been expanded to include six additional languages: Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Urdu, and Sanskrit.&nbsp;
While addressing the House, Birla noted that previously, translation services were available in 10 languages&mdash;Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, and Telugu&mdash;along with Hindi and English.
"Now, we have also included six more languages&mdash;Bodo, Dogri, Maithili, Manipuri, Urdu, and Sanskrit. Along with this, for the additional 16 languages, as human resources become available, we are making efforts to provide simultaneous translations in those as well," he said.
Highlighting India's commitment to linguistic diversity, Birla emphasized that the country's parliamentary system is a democratic framework offering translation services in multiple languages.&nbsp;
"When I discussed at the global level that we are making this effort in 22 languages in India, everyone on the international platforms praised it. Our effort is that, for the 22 languages that are officially recognized, we aim to include them in the future as well," he stated.
However, the announcement faced opposition from DMK MP Dayanidhi Maran, who questioned the necessity of including Sanskrit in the simultaneous translation services. Maran argued that Sanskrit is spoken by only a small fraction of the population and questioned the expenditure of public funds on it.&nbsp;
"It is not communicable in any of the states in India. Nobody is speaking that. 2011 population survey said that only 73,000 people are supposed to be speaking. Why should the taxpayer's money be wasted because of your RSS ideologies?" Maran remarked.
Responding to the criticism, Speaker Om Birla strongly defended the decision, questioning Maran&rsquo;s objection to Sanskrit&rsquo;s inclusion. "This is India, whose 'Mool Bhasha' has been Sanskrit. That's why we mentioned 22 languages, not just Sanskrit. Why did you have an issue with Sanskrit?" Birla asked.

Uttarakhand Waqf Board's chairman Shadab Shams has said that Sanskrit will be taught in madrasas in the state.
He added that students will be able to learn both Sanskrit and Arabic along with English and that the curriculum will be an amalgamation of scientific learning and Islamic studies
He further said that the NCERT syllabus will be implemented in madrasas and their infrastructure will be upgraded.
&ldquo;The people of Devbhoomi are different from others. If our language, culture, and traditions are different from others, then our education pattern should also be different from others. Our children should learn our languages and prioritise that. We will appoint Sanskrit Acharyas and Arabic teachers in our madrasas so that we can teach both languages. Our children will speak Sanskrit, Arabic and English too,&rdquo; Shams was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Out of 117 madrasas under the board, it will develop four - one each in Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital districts &mdash; into model madrasas in the first phase.
&ldquo;There will be namaz five times in the model madrasas. After the early morning namaz at around 6.30 am, an hour will be designated for Quran studies. From 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., the madrasa will run like a proper school. During that time, a school uniform would be mandatory just like any English-medium school,&rdquo; Shams said.
He said spiritual leaders favour the implementation of Sanskrit in madrasas and appealed to them to adopt madrasas with less funds.

Indian PhD student at Cambridge University solves 2,500-year-old Sanskrit puzzle

A grammatical problem which has defeated Sanskrit scholars since the 5th Century BC has finally been solved by an Indian PhD student at the University of Cambridge. 

Rajpopat&rsquo;s discovery makes it possible to &ldquo;derive&rdquo; any Sanskrit word, to construct millions of grammatically correct words, using Panini&rsquo;s revered language machine.&nbsp;

A grammatical problem which has defeated Sanskrit scholars since the 5th Century BC has finally been solved by an Indian PhD student at the University of Cambridge, it emerged as his thesis was published on Thursday.
Rishi Rajpopat made the breakthrough by decoding a rule taught by Panini, known as the father of linguistics, and is now encapsulated in his thesis entitled &lsquo;In Panini, We Trust: Discovering the Algorithm for Rule Conflict Resolution in the Astadhyayi&rsquo;.
According to the university, leading Sanskrit experts have described Rajpopat&rsquo;s discovery as &ldquo;revolutionary&rdquo; and it could now mean that Panini&rsquo;s grammar can also be taught to computers for the first time.
&ldquo;I had a eureka moment in Cambridge,&rdquo; recalls Rajpopat.
&ldquo;After nine months trying to crack this problem, I was almost ready to quit, I was getting nowhere. So, I closed the books for a month and just enjoyed the summer, swimming, cycling, cooking, praying and meditating. Then, begrudgingly I went back to work, and, within minutes, as I turned the pages, these patterns started emerging, and it all started to make sense. There was a lot more work to do but I&rsquo;d found the biggest part of the puzzle,&rdquo; said the 27-year-old scholar.
Over the next few weeks, he was so excited that he couldn&rsquo;t sleep and would spend hours in the library, including in the middle of the night, to check what he&rsquo;d found and solve related problems. It would take another two and half years before he would get to the finish line.
&ldquo;Panini had an extraordinary mind and he built a machine unrivalled in human history. He didn&rsquo;t expect us to add new ideas to his rules. The more we fiddle with Panini's grammar, the more it eludes us,&rdquo; says Rajpopat.
The 2,500-year-old algorithm decoded by him makes it possible, for the first time, to accurately use Panini&rsquo;s so-called &ldquo;language machine&rdquo;.
Rajpopat&rsquo;s discovery makes it possible to &ldquo;derive&rdquo; any Sanskrit word, to construct millions of grammatically correct words, using Panini&rsquo;s revered language machine, which is widely considered to be one of the greatest intellectual achievements in history.
Panini&rsquo;s system &ndash; 4,000 rules detailed in his renowned work, the Astadhyayi, which is thought to have been written around 500 BC &ndash; is meant to work like a machine. Feed in the base and suffix of a word and it should turn them into grammatically correct words and sentences through a step-by-step process.

Until now, however, there has been a big problem. Often, two or more of Panini&rsquo;s rules are simultaneously applicable at the same step leaving scholars to agonise over which one to choose. Solving so-called &ldquo;rule conflicts&rdquo;, which affect millions of Sanskrit words including certain forms of &ldquo;mantra&rdquo; and &ldquo;guru&rdquo;, requires an algorithm. Rajpopat&rsquo;s research shows that Panini&rsquo;s so-called language machine is also self-sufficient.
"My student Rishi has cracked it &ndash; he has found an extraordinarily elegant solution to a problem which has perplexed scholars for centuries. This discovery will revolutionise the study of Sanskrit at a time when interest in the language is on the rise,&rdquo; said Professor Vincenzo Vergiani, Sanskrit professor and Rajpopat&rsquo;s PhD supervisor.
Six months before Rajpopat made his discovery, Professor Vergiani gave him some prescient advice: &ldquo;If the solution is complicated, you are probably wrong&rdquo;. A major implication of Rajpopat&rsquo;s discovery is that now there is the algorithm that runs Panini's grammar, it could potentially teach this grammar to computers.
"Computer scientists working on Natural Language Processing gave up on rule-based approaches over 50 years ago. So teaching computers how to combine the speaker&rsquo;s intention with Panini&rsquo;s rule-based grammar to produce human speech would be a major milestone in the history of human interaction with machines, as well as in India's intellectual history," said Rajpopat.
Sanskrit is an ancient and classical Indo-European language from South Asia. While only spoken in India by an estimated 25,000 people today, it has influenced many other languages and cultures around the world.
&ldquo;Some of the most ancient wisdom of India has been produced in Sanskrit and we still don&rsquo;t fully understand what our ancestors achieved. We&rsquo;ve often been led to believe that we&rsquo;re not important, that we haven&rsquo;t brought enough to the table. I hope this discovery will infuse students in India with confidence, pride, and hope that they too can achieve great things,&rdquo; added Rajpopat.&nbsp;

Also, a departmental inquiry has been ordered for violation of rule and unilaterally making students to take the Charaka oath. The action has been ordered by Health Minister Ma Subramanian.
The government said it would advise heads of all state-run medical colleges through a circular to always follow the Hippocratic oath without fail.
The National Medical Commission had recently recommended that the Maharshi Charak Shapath should replace the Hippocratic oath. According to new guidelines, "Modified Maharshi Charak Shapath is recommended when a candidate is introduced to medical education." "Unlike Roman or Latin languages, Sanskrit is lively, perpetual and classical language which has the potential to revive, rejuvenate and resurrect itself time and again," he said.
Yoga guru Ramdev, who was a special guest at the function, said Sanskrit was not just a language but a culture and called for imparting lessons in Engineering, Medicine, Law, Management and other streams in Sanskrit.
Ramdev said the new education police had laid renewed thrust on Sanskrit and appealed to the university to meet the requirement of good Sanskrit teachers in the country.
Dr Pankaj Chande, founder vice chancellor of Kavikulaguru Kalidas Sanskrit University and Om Prakash Tiwari, secretary of Kaivalyadham Yoga Institute were awarded honorary D.Litt at the function.
