Opposing the free-Palestine movement, renowned author Salman Rushdie, said it would end up becoming a &ldquo;Taliban-like state,&rdquo; governed by Hamas. Rushdie made the comment at the launch of his new book &lsquo;Knife&rsquo; at a literary festival in Germany.
Referring to pro-Palestine student protesters in the US and the Europe, Rushdie said it was &ldquo;strange&rdquo; that progressive youth was supporting a "fascist terrorist group" like Hamas. &nbsp;
"I would like some protesters to mention the role of Hamas, and that's a terrorist organisation. It's quite strange that political progressives support a fascist terrorist group," Rushdie said. &nbsp;
"Is this what the progressive movements of the Western Left want to create," he asked.
Rushdie claimed he had supported the formation of a Palestinian state for a long time, but now believed it would lead to an authoritarian regime like that in Afghanistan. &nbsp;

"I feel great," said Rushdie, wearing a dark collarless jacket and matching pants. "I have a long associated with PEN America and I'm just happy to be amongst writers and book people." Rushdie, 75, attended the gala, where hundreds of writers and other PEN members gathered for the dinner benefit.
"Saturday Night Live" founder Lorne Michaels and Iranian dissident Narges Mohammadi were among those scheduled to be honoured.
Last August, Rushdie was appearing at the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education and retreat center in western New York, when he was assaulted by a young man dressed in black and carrying a knife. Rushdie sustained multiple wounds, leaving him blind in his right eye and struggling to write.
The alleged assailant, Hadi Matar, has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and attempted murder.
Rushdie was in hiding for years after Iran's Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa in 1989 calling for his death because of the alleged blasphemy of the novel "The Satanic Verse", but he had long moved about freely before the attack in August.
He has since granted few interviews and otherwise communicated through his Twitter account and prepared remarks. Earlier this week, he delivered a video message to the British Book Awards, where he was given a Freedom to Publish prize.&nbsp;

Salman Rushdie, the Mumbai-born author of Booker Prize-winning novel 'Midnight&rsquo;s Children&rsquo;, said on Monday that he feels lucky to have survived the last year&rsquo;s brutal stabbing at a literary event in the US as he spoke for the first time about the &ldquo;colossal attack&rdquo;.
The 75-year-old British American novelist was giving a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution in New York &ndash; where he is based &ndash; on August 12 last year when a man stormed the stage and stabbed and punched him several times.
In his first interview since the attack which has caused loss of vision in one eye, the author told &lsquo;The New Yorker&rsquo; magazine that his main feeling was one of gratitude to those who showed their support and his family, including sons Zafar and Milan.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;m lucky. What I really want to say is that my main overwhelming feeling is gratitude,&rdquo; Rushdie told the magazine.
"I'm able to get up and walk around. When I say I'm fine, I mean, there are bits of my body that need constant check ups. It was a colossal attack," he said.
Asked if he felt it had been a mistake to let his guard down in New York, years after the fatwa by Iran&rsquo;s former supreme leader Ayatollah Khomeini called on Muslims to assassinate the author over the allegedly &ldquo;blasphemous&rdquo; novel &lsquo;The Satanic Verses&rsquo;, he replied: &ldquo;Well, I&rsquo;m asking myself that question, and I don&rsquo;t know the answer to it. I did have more than 20 years of life. So, is that a mistake?" &ldquo;Also, I wrote a lot of books. &lsquo;The Satanic Verses&rsquo; was my fifth published book &mdash; my fourth published novel &mdash; and this [&lsquo;Victory City&rsquo;] is my twenty-first. So, three-quarters of my life as a writer has happened since the fatwa. In a way, you can&rsquo;t regret your life,&rdquo; he added.
The celebrated author told the magazine that he was very moved by the tributes that his near-death inspired and is determined to look forward.
&ldquo;It&rsquo;s very nice that everybody was so moved by this, you know? I had never thought about how people would react if I was assassinated, or almost assassinated,&rdquo; he said.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ve tried very hard over these years to avoid recrimination and bitterness. I just think it&rsquo;s not a good look. One of the ways I&rsquo;ve dealt with this whole thing is to look forward and not backwards. What happens tomorrow is more important than what happened yesterday,&rdquo; he added.
&ldquo;She kind of took over at a point when I was helpless,&rdquo; he said of his wife, poet and novelist Rachel Eliza Griffiths.
His latest novel, &lsquo;Victory City&rsquo;, completed before the attack, traces back to a trip decades ago to Hampi, the site in Karnataka of the ruins of the medieval Vijayanagara empire.
&ldquo;The first kings of Vijayanagara announced, quite seriously, that they were descended from the moon... It&rsquo;s like saying, &lsquo;I&rsquo;ve descended from the same family as Achilles.&rsquo; Or Agamemnon. And so, I thought, well, if you could say that, I can say anything,&rdquo; the author said.
Rushdie&rsquo;s attacker Hadi Matar is being held in the Chautauqua County Jail in the village of Mayville, charged with attempted murder in the second degree and facing a lengthy prison sentence.&nbsp;

He knew Rushdie lived there and decided he wanted to meet him. It was years before &ldquo;The Satanic Verses&rdquo;, and Eugenides found his name and address in the phone book.
&ldquo;I took the tube out to his house. As it turned out, Salman wasn't at home; he was in Italy, vacationing," said Eugenides, who was greeted by Rushdie's then-mother-in-law and left a note for the author.
&ldquo;That was the world we used to live in," Eugenides added.

Dressed in a black and white jail uniform, Matar stayed quiet during the hearing while his lawyer unsuccessfully tried to persuade the judge that he should be released while he awaited trial. Public defender Nathaniel Barone said Matar had no criminal record and wouldn't flee the country if released.
Barone also asked the judge to do something to stop reporters from trying to contact Matar at the Chautauqua County jail. The lawyer said the jail had received “several hundred phone calls” from people trying to reach Matar.
Some of that media outreach resulted in Matar giving a brief interview to The New York Post, in which he talked about disliking Rushdie and praised Iran's late supreme leader, Grand Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.
Khomeini issued an edict in 1989 demanding Rushdie's death over his novel “The Satanic Verses,” which some Muslims consider blasphemous. A semiofficial Iranian foundation had posted a bounty of over $3 million.
Matar's lawyer complained that the media coverage could potentially lead to a biased jury.
“He's entitled to a fair trial. He's entitled to due process, no matter what he's accused of,” Barone said.
Judge David Foley declined that request, but he ordered the lawyers involved in the case not to give interviews.
“No speaking to the press until we have resolved this issue,” the judge said.
Rushdie, 75, is getting treatment in a Pennsylvania hospital for severe wounds. His literary agent, Andrew Wylie, has said Rushdie had a damaged liver and severed nerves in an arm, and could lose an eye.
Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt called the attack “preplanned.” The author had just taken the stage at the normally tranquil lakeside retreat for a discussion of protections for writers in exile and freedom of expression when Matar jumped onstage.
Henry Reese, 73, the cofounder of Pittsburgh's City of Asylum, was onstage with Rushdie and suffered a gash to his forehead, bruising and other minor injuries.
Matar, who lived in Fairview, New Jersey, with his mother, is charged with attempted murder and assault. He could get decades in prison if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty.

The family thanked the police and doctors for their care. They also expressed gratitude for the “outpouring of love and support from around the world.” “We ask for continued patience and privacy as the family come together at his bedside to support and help him through this time,” the statement said.

The same year, Kamlesh Tiwari, President of a group called Hindu Samaj Party, was shot and stabbed to death in Uttar Pradesh's Lucknow. A fatwa had been issued against him in 2016 by 2 UP clerics, according to Tiwari's wife. The fatwa had been issued over remarks made by Tiwari about a religious figure.
Rafiq Tagi, an Azerbaijani journalist, was killed in 2011 over a fatwa issued by an Iranian cleric in 2006. The fatwa was issued over articles critical of Islam written by Tagi. He was stabbed, and died in a hospital.
Another high-profile target of a fatwa was Pervez Musharraf, the former military ruler of Pakistan. In 2010, a conference in Quetta issued a fatwa which reportedly labelled Musharraf 'fit to be killed'. The death warrant was issued over the assassination of some Baloch nationalists.

The document reportedly said that life and death are in the hands of Allah, and the income from interest earned by insurance companies is 'haram' or forbidden.
The same clerics had earlier issued a fatwa banning women from uploading their photographs online. The fatwa said that Muslim women cannot show their faces in public. It was issued by Darul Uloom Deoband in Uttar Pradesh in 2017. The seminary issued another fatwa banning designer, and slim-fit burqas. Burqas are meant to protect women from prying eyes, the 2018 fatwa by Darul Uloom Deoband said.
But out of all these, the death fatwa remains the most destructive. It's latest high-profile victim - Salman Rushdie - had been facing the threat for over 30 years.

A few days earlier, Ettore Capriolo had been attacked in Italy. Capriolo had translated Rushdie's book into Italian. He was attacked at his Milan apartment, suffering knife wounds in his neck, chest, and hands, but survived.
In October 1993, William Nygaard was shot 3 times. He was the Norwegian publisher of 'The Satanic Verses'. Nygaard was shot outside his home in Oslo, but managed to survive, spending many months in a hospital.

It was issued by Darul Uloom, Deoband, which said that Islam orders that daughters be treated well.Recently, a fatwa was issued against the beheading of a tailor in Udaipur. Kanhaiya Lal was killed allegedly for supporting Nupur Sharma over her remarks against Islamic Prophet Mohammad. The fatwa against his murder was published by Dargah-e-Aala Hazrat in UP's Bareilly.

In Iran's first public reaction on the attack on author Salman Rushdie, its government official denied on Monday that Tehran was involved in the assault on the notable author. 
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said nobody has the right to accuse his country in this regard.
He added that Iran did not have any other information more than what the American media has reported.
Rushdie, 75, was stabbed Friday while attending an event in western New York. He suffered a damaged liver and severed nerves in an arm and an eye, his agent. He was likely to lose the injured eye.

A semiofficial Iranian foundation had put up a bounty of over $3 million for the author, though it has yet to offer any comment on the attack.
While fatwas can be revised or revoked, Iran's current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who took over after Khomeini has never done so.
As recently as February 2017, Khamenei said, “The decree is as Imam Khomeini issued.” Since 1979, Iran has targeted dissidents abroad in attacks. Tensions with the West, particularly the United States have spiked since then President Donald Trump unilaterally pulled America out of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers in 2018.

In Iran's first reaction to the attack on author Salman Rushdie, its government official denied on Monday that Tehran was involved in the assault on the notable author.&nbsp;
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani said nobody has the right to accuse Iran of the incident.
Kanaani said that Iran did not "have any other information more than what the American media has reported.&rdquo; The West &ldquo;condemning the actions of the attacker and in return glorifying the actions of the insulter to Islamic beliefs is a contradictory attitude,&rdquo; he added.
Rushdie, 75, was stabbed Friday while attending an event in western New York. He suffered a damaged liver and severed nerves in an arm and an eye, his agent said. He was likely to lose the injured eye.

His assailant, 24-year-old Hadi Matar, allegedly sympathetic to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, a branch of the Iranian Armed Forces, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the attack through his lawyer.
Former Iran Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini had issued a fatwa on Rushdie in 1989 demanding his death. The Islamic edict came amid a violent uproar in the Muslim world over Rushdie's novel 'The Satanic Verses' which some viewed as blasphemous.
A semiofficial Iranian foundation had put up a bounty of over $3 million for the author, though it has yet to offer any comment on the attack.
While fatwas can be revised or revoked, Iran's current Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who took over after Khomeini has never done so. As recently as February 2017, Khamenei said: &ldquo;The decree is as Imam Khomeini issued.&rdquo;&nbsp;

She took to the microblogging platform to share screenshots of the 'threatening' tweets from a user.
In response to a tweet wherein 57-year-old Rowling was expressing her distress over the news of Rushdie's attack calling it &ldquo;horrifying news&rdquo; a user commented, &ldquo;Don't worry you are next&rdquo;.
The writer shared the screenshots of the replies from the user, and tagged Twitter Support's account seeking support. She wrote, &ldquo;any chance of some support."
According to the screenshots, the Twitter handle which issued the 'death threat' had also praised Rushdie's attacker.
The tweet read, &ldquo;The name of this man is hadi matar. He is a revolutionary Shia fighter followed the fatwa of late ayatollah rohullah khomenei&rdquo;.

After receiving support online, Rowling thanked her supporters in the same thread and informed that the police were investigating the issue.
&ldquo;To all sending supportive messages: thank you. Police are involved (were already involved on other threats),&rdquo; she wrote.
Rowling later shared a screenshot of Twitter's feedback after she reported the user, which stated that there were &ldquo;no violations of the Twitter rules&rdquo; in the comment.
The British author has of late been mired in controversies over her stand on transgenders that has left the LGBTQ+ community upset.

"We definitely had people coming in looking for anything that he's written," said floor manager Katie Silvernail.
"Some of our younger employees had never heard of him. So it was interesting yesterday to have conversations... with our younger staff about who he was and what his impact was on the literary world."
She added: "Honestly, I feel like people just came here yesterday because they wanted to talk about how they felt about what happened."
On Twitter, some users urged people to buy Rushdie's books in a show of solidarity.

K Natwar Singh, who was a Union minister in the Rajiv Gandhi government that banned Salman Rushdie's controversial book "The Satanic Verses", strongly defended the decision on Saturday asserting it was taken "purely" for law and order reasons.

Singh, who was the minister of state for external affairs when the book was banned in 1988, said he had told the then PM that the book could cause serious law and order problems as emotions were running high.

With focus back on Rushdie's book in the wake of the attack on him in New York, Singh, who was the minister of state for external affairs when the book was banned in 1988, said he was part of the decision and had told the then prime minister the book could cause serious law and order problems as feelings were running very high. Singh (91) rejected as "rubbish" the charge by critics the Rajiv Gandhi government's decision to ban the book was driven by appeasement towards Muslims.
"I don't think it (the decision to ban the book) was wrong because you see it had led to law and order problems, particularly in Kashmir. In other parts of India also there was disquiet," Singh told PTI.
"Rajiv Gandhi asked me what should be done. I said, 'all my life I have been totally opposed to banning books but when it comes to law and order even a book of a great writer like Rushdie should be banned'," the diplomat-turned-politician said. Rushdie's 'Midnight's Children' is one of the great novels of the 20th century but the decision to ban "The Satanic Verses" was taken purely for law and order reasons, Singh asserted.

Strongly defending the Rajiv Gandhi government's decision, Singh said, "I completely think it was justified because it was going to cause serious law and order problems as feelings were running very high particularly among our Muslim population." "I said, 'the entire Muslim world is going to flare up, we have a large number of Muslims and apart from that, what the book contains at this time, is not acceptable'," he recounted. Rushdie, who faced death threats for years after writing "The Satanic Verses", was stabbed on stage on Friday while he was being introduced at the event of the Chautauqua Institution in Western New York.
The New York State Police identified the suspect as Hadi Matar from Fairview, New Jersey, while the motive behind the act is still unknown.
The suspect ran up onto the stage prior to the speaking event and attacked the 75-year-old. The author was rushed to a nearby hospital where he underwent surgery. Singh said he was "very distressed" over the attack.
"Here is a man 75-years old, not harming anybody and contributing to literature and then some rascal comes and nearly kills him and that too when he was making a speech in New York," he said.
Singh said Rushdie had left England for the simple reason that there were more Muslims in the UK than there are in America.
"There is no doubt that he is one of the great writers of the 20th century. So I am very distressed. I did not know him personally but I admired his Midnight's Children, I read it several times, it is high class literature," he said, lauding Rushdie for his contribution to the world of literature.
