The Kremlin confirms that President Vladimir Putin is open to talks with Donald Trump, who has expressed his intention to meet Putin in an effort to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

The Kremlin said Friday that President Vladimir Putin was open to talks with Donald Trump, after the incoming US president said a meeting between the pair was being set up.
"The president has repeatedly stated his openness to contact with international leaders, including the US president, including Donald Trump," Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
Trump, who will be inaugurated on January 20, has repeatedly said he can bring a swift end to the nearly three-year conflict between Russia and Ukraine, without presenting a concrete plan.
On Thursday he said a meeting with Putin was being arranged.
"He wants to meet, and we're setting it up," Trump said at a meeting with Republican governors at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Florida.
"President Putin wants to meet, he's said that even publicly, and we have to get that war over with, that's a bloody mess," he said.
The Kremlin welcomed Trump's "readiness to solve problems through dialogue," Peskov said Friday, adding Moscow had no prerequisites for staging the meeting.
"No conditions are required. What is required is mutual desire and political will to solve problems through dialogue," he told reporters in a daily briefing.
Trump's hopes for a swift end to the conflict have stoked concern in Kyiv that Ukraine could be forced to accept a peace deal on terms favourable to Moscow.
Washington has delivered tens of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale military offensive in February 2022.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that without such support his country would have lost the conflict.
He is pushing Trump to back his "peace-through-strength" proposal, seeking NATO protections and concrete Western security guarantees as part of any settlement to end the fighting.

As per reports atleast 150,000 people on each side have died. The ecnomic ramifications have also been immense. Ukraine itself has seen economic output contract about over 30%. Not just Ukraine, over the past year, the war has caused multiple shocks to the global economy. As per estimates, the war could cost the global economy about $2.8 trillion in terms of lost output. Russia and Ukraine together constitue a large part of the world's energy and food supply. The war&nbsp; disrupted wheat, barley and cooking oil supplies from Ukraine and Russia, to Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia.
Infact both countries account for 25% of the world's wheat imports. In fact, Ukraine, known as "breadbasket of the world", was unable to continue with its supplies, sending food prices soaring across the world.&nbsp;
The spikes in energy and food prices led to inflation spiking to a multi-decade high of 9% in the U.S. and over 10% in Europe. The Food and Agriculture Organization says its food price index reached a record high in 2022, up by 14.3% from 2021.
Supply chain disruptions, which were still prevalent from the pandemic, once again saw a set back. As a result, there was a spike in both food and energy prices.&nbsp;
However, now, supply chains have returned to pre-war levels. As per Moneycontrol, the Baltic Dry Index was as high as 5,650 in early October 2021 before it fell to under 1,300 by the end of January 2022. However, the Russia-Ukraine war pushed the index over 3,000 by May 2022. It has since collapsed to under 1,000. This index measures the average price of shipping dry bulk across several routes and is considered a lead indicator of economic activity.
The World Bank has warned that the global economy could slip into recession in 2023.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday said that on the one hand Prime Minister Narendra Modi mediates in the Russia-Ukraine war, while on the other he turns a blind eye to the simmering Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute, which is "not a sign of a good politician".
In his weekly column 'Rokhthok' in the party mouthpiece Saamana, Raut also said that the border dispute between Maharashtra and Karnataka was a struggle for humanity, and not a fight between people and governments of the two states.
Maharashtra has been long claiming Belagavi and surrounding border areas in north Karnataka as they have a sizable Marathi-speaking population. The decades-old border dispute resurfaced again after Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai recently claimed that some villages in Sangli district in Maharashtra have passed a resolution to become a part of the southern state owing to lack of basic facilities there.
"The struggle of the Marathi-speaking population in Belagavi and nearby areas who were included in Karnataka against their wishes during the reorganisation of states, cannot be crushed cruelly," Raut said.

If the central government and the Supreme Court cannot resolve the issue, where should one seek justice from, the senior leader of the Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) asked.
"PM Modi mediates in the Russia-Ukraine war, but turns a blind eye to the Maharashtra-Karnataka border dispute. This is not a sign of a good politician," he alleged.

The commander-in-chief of Ukraine's armed forces expects a new Russian attack on Kyiv in the early months of 2023, according to an interview with The Economist released Thursday.
Much of the fighting has been concentrated in the east and south recently but General Valeriy Zaluzhny told the British weekly the capital would be targeted again.
A "very important strategic task is to create reserves and prepare for the war which may take place in February, at best in March, and at worst at the end of January," he said in a December 3 interview released on Thursday.
"The Russians are preparing some 200,000 fresh troops. I have no doubt they will have another go at Kyiv," he said in the interview.
"We have made all the calculations -- how many tanks, artillery we need and so on and so on."

At the end of February, Moscow sent its forces into Ukraine with the aim of swiftly capturing Kyiv.
In a victory for the Ukrainian army, the invaders were held up several dozen kilometres from the capital before pulling back from the region at the end of March and early April.
The general said among his current problems was "to hold this (front)line", which runs south to east, "and not lose any more ground" after pushing back the Russians from the Kharkiv region in the northeast in September and Kherson in the south last month.
For Zaluzhny, the Russians have bombarded energy infrastructure since October following a series of humiliating battlefield reverses because "they need time to gather resources" for a broad offensive in the coming months.
