The court had warned a "very difficult situation" will emerge if proselytisation through deception, allurement and intimidation is not stopped.

Observing that religious conversion is a serious issue which should not be given a political colour, the Supreme Court on Monday sought the assistance of Attorney General R Venkataramani on a plea seeking direction to the Centre and states to take stringent steps to control fraudulent religious conversions.
A bench of Justices M R Shah and C T Ravikumar asked Venkataramani to appear in the matter in which the petitioner sought a check on religious conversions through "intimidation, threatening, deceivingly luring through gifts and monetary benefits", and assist as amicus curiae.
"We want your assistance also, AG. Religious conversions by force, allurement etc. There are ways and ways, anything by allurement, if that is happening, when what should be done? What are the corrective measures?" the bench said.
At the outset, senior advocate P Wilson, appearing for Tamil Nadu, called the petition a "politically motivated" PIL, insisting there was no question of such conversions in the state.

The bench took objection and remarked," You may have different reasons to be agitated like this. Don't convert court proceedings into other things. ... We are concerned for the entire state. If it is happening in your state, it is bad. If not, good. Do not see it as targeting one state. Do not make it political." The court was hearing a petition filed by advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay seeking direction to the Centre and states to take tough steps to control fraudulent religious conversions.
Forced religious conversion may pose a danger to national security and impinge on the religious freedom of citizens, the top court had said recently and asked the Centre to step in and make sincere efforts to tackle the "very serious" issue.
The court had warned a "very difficult situation" will emerge if proselytisation through deception, allurement and intimidation is not stopped.
The Gujarat government had told the top court at an earlier hearing that freedom of religion does not include the right to convert others, and requested it to vacate a high court stay on the provision of a state law that mandates prior permission of the district magistrate for conversion through marriage.
The Supreme Court had on September 23 sought responses from the Centre and others to the plea.

Bharatiya Janata Party MLA Nitesh Rane has said he along with members of the Sakal Hindu Samaj have asked the Maharashtra government to enact a law in the state against "love jihad" and religious conversion.
Speaking to reporters in the state legislature complex in Nagpur on Wednesday, Rane said Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have assured to bring such a law soon in the state.
"Love jihad" is a term often used by right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage Rane said he along with women representatives of the Sakal Hindu Samaj met Chief Minister Shinde and Deputy CM Fadnavis, demanding a law against "love jihad" and religious conversion in Maharashtra, on the lines of Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat and other states.
"The chief minister and the deputy CM have taken our demands seriously and assured to bring a law soon in the state," he said.
Rane said the Sakal Hindu Samaj has been taking out morchas in every district of Maharashtra, demanding a strict law against "love jihad" and religious conversion.
Fadnavis had last week said the government would study laws on "love jihad" framed by other states and take an appropriate decision.
Notably, Maharashtra minister and BJP leader Girish Mahajan recently alleged the death of actor Tunisha Sharma last week was a matter of "love jihad" and that the state was planning to bring a strict law to curb such incidents.
State BJP MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar on Wednesday demanded that a probe be conducted from "love jihad" angle into Sharma's death, in which her co-star Sheezan Khan has been arrested.&nbsp;

UP: 9 booked over alleged forced religious conversion in Meerut

The complaint was filed by a few residents of Mangatapuram Colony.

&nbsp;An FIR was lodged against nine people and a probe ordered following allegations of religious conversion, police said on Saturday.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Rohit Singh Sajwan said a complaint was received regarding religious conversions and Brahmapuri police station had been asked to investigate the matter.
"On the basis of the preliminary investigation report, a case was registered against nine people, including three women, on Friday. The investigation is going on," the officer said.
The complaint was filed by a few residents of Mangatapuram Colony.
According to the complainants, during COVID-19, some people provided food and financial assistance to the poor living in the area. They alleged that the accused then forced these people to convert to Christianity, the police said.
"Not only this, pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses are also being thrown out by the accused from the houses of the people of Mangatapuram Colony. On protesting or complaining about the incident to anyone, the accused come home with knives and sticks and threaten to kill," according to the complaint.

While there is no mention of how many people have been converted, local BJP leader Deepak Sharma claimed that more than 100 people living from Mangatapuram Colony had allegedly been converted to Christianity.
"This has been going on for the past three years. During the COVID-19 period, the people were given ration and money to convert to Christianity. Now, other people are being threatened to convert as well," Sharma alleged.
The nine persons named in the FIR are Chhabili alias Shiva, Binwa, Anil, Sardar, Nikku, Basant, Prema, Titli and Reena under Section 3, 5(1) of the Uttar Pradesh Unlawful Conversion Prohibition Act.
Police are yet to make an arrest.

The plea has also sought directions to the Law Commission of India to prepare a report as well as a Bill to control religious conversion by intimidation and monetary benefits

A Bishop&rsquo;s anti-Muslim sermon at a Church in Kerala has caused quite a stir, leading to calls for action against him. Joseph Kallarangatt of Pala Diocese under the Syro Malabar Church gave a sermon on Thursday wherein he christened a new phrase&mdash; 'narcotics jihad'&mdash;an attempt by Muslims in Kerala to lure Christians towards Islam with the help of drugs.The Bishop said that the Christian community had been facing a lot of issues due to &lsquo;love and narcotics jihad&rsquo; and extremists were using such a route to destroy youth and to lure Christian women in particular.
Various religious organisations, both Christian and non-Christian, denounced the Bishop&rsquo;s remarks. Reformist groups within the Church alleged that the Bishop was making communal statements to appease the right-wing and the BJP for aid. The Bishop had earlier made news for donating money to RSS for the Ram Mandir initiative.
The communal statements also attracted condemnation from both sides of the political aisle. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that there was no need to give narcotics a religious colour. Opposition Congress too called it &lsquo;an unfortunate incident&rsquo;.
Meanwhile, BJP not only supported and backed the Bishop&rsquo;s communal preaching but also appealed to the central government to bring legislation to deal with so called &lsquo;narco terrorism&rsquo; and &lsquo;love jihad&rsquo;.&nbsp;
