<p>The makers of "Ramayana", billed as an ambitious cinematic event, on Thursday unveiled the first glimpse of the upcoming mythological epic, featuring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash and Sai Pallavi in the lead roles.</p>
<p>Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra&rsquo;s Prime Focus Studios and DNEG, in association with Yash&rsquo;s Monster Mind Creations, the film is a two-part live-action saga set 5,000 years ago and rooted in one of Indian mythology&rsquo;s most enduring epics, a press release said.</p>

<p>The first part is slated to release worldwide in IMAX during Diwali 2026, with part two following in Diwali 2027.</p>
<p>"Ramayana" features Ranbir as Lord Rama, "KGF" star Yash as Ravana and Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita as Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lord Lakshman.</p>
<p>The film's crew includes renowned international artists, including Oscar-winning composers Hans Zimmer and A R Rahman, who are collaborating on the score.</p>
<p>The action sequences are choreographed by Hollywood stunt veterans Terry Notary and Guy Norris, and the film&rsquo;s visual world is being shaped by production designers Ravi Bansal of "Dune 2" fame and Ramsey Avery as "Captain America".</p>

<p>Initially scheduled for a re-release in October 2024 with updated dubs in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu alongside the original English version, the movie will now arrive earlier in a stunning 4K format, thanks to Geek Pictures India, AA Films, and Excel Entertainment.</p>
<p>Arjun Aggarwal, co-founder of Geek Pictures India, expressed the joy of bringing this beloved epic to new and old audiences. &ldquo;This isn&rsquo;t just a movie; it&rsquo;s a celebration of our culture, a bridge between generations, and a testament to the global admiration of Indian heritage through Japanese anime,&rdquo; said Aggarwal.</p>

<p>The film stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Goddess Sita, and KGF actor Yash as Ravana. Sunny Deol will star as Hanuman.</p>
<p>This grand retelling adds to the long history of filmmakers adapting the Ramayana, each offering their own interpretation of the ancient epic.</p>
<p>Before Tiwari's Ramayana, several notable films have drawn inspiration from this mythological story, each adding a modern twist to the ancient narrative.</p>
<p>Singham Again (directed by Rohit Shetty) takes its cues from the Ramayana, with Ajay Devgn&rsquo;s DCP Bajirao Singham and Kareena Kapoor Khan&rsquo;s Avni Kamat mirroring the figures of Lord Rama and Goddess Sita. The movie has performed well at the box office, though mixed reviews have slightly affected its long-term success.</p>
<p>Released in 2023, Adipurush, directed by Om Raut, brought the Ramayana to the big screen with Prabhas as Raghava (Lord Rama), Kriti Sanon as Janaki (Sita), and Saif Ali Khan as Lankesh (Ravana). Despite a massive opening of Rs 103 crore globally, the film was criticized for its visual effects and dialogue, leading to a disappointing box office collection of Rs 353.50 crore.</p>
<p>RRR, SS Rajamouli&rsquo;s 2022 blockbuster, didn&rsquo;t directly adapt the Ramayana, but drew clear influences from it. Ram Charan&rsquo;s role as Rama Raju echoes Lord Rama, while Jr NTR's Komaram Bheem shares traits with Hanuman, both in physicality and loyalty. The film was a massive success, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of 2022.</p>
<p>Ram Setu, starring Akshay Kumar, explored the origins of the Ram Setu (Adam's Bridge) and brought the Ramayana into the modern age. While the film underperformed theatrically, it managed to outdo its Diwali co-release, Thank God.</p>
<p>Mani Ratnam&rsquo;s Raavan (2010) offered a dark, nuanced perspective of the Ramayana through the eyes of the demon king, Ravana. While the film flopped in its Hindi version, it was a success in Tamil. Abhishek Bachchan's portrayal of Beera Munda (Ravana) and Aishwarya Rai&rsquo;s Ragini Sharma (Sita) highlighted the complexity of the characters.</p>
<p>Lastly, Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama (1993), co-produced by Japan and India, remains a nostalgic favorite for many. However, it faced controversy in India when it was initially banned, and its theatrical release was delayed for years. Although it was never released in theaters, its influence remains strong, and a potential re-release is awaited.</p>

<p>Nitesh Tiwari&rsquo;s &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo;, starring Ranbir Kapoor, has landed in legal trouble over intellectual property rights. According to a Money Control report, Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP, and Prime Focus Technologies Limited are arguing about who owns the rights to the title &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo;. They started talking about it in April 2024, but negotiations failed because the payment was not completed to finalise the agreement.</p>
<p>&lsquo;Allu Mantena Media Ventures LLP claims that the rights to &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo; continue to belong to them, and any use or exploitation of the script or material by Prime Focus Technologies Limited or any affiliated entities would constitute an infringement of their copyright. The notice also states that Prime Focus Technologies Limited has no right, title, or interest in the &lsquo;Project Ramayana&rsquo; material. The production company has expressed its intention to take legal action to protect its rights if necessary,&rsquo; the report stated.&nbsp;</p>
<p>It's uncertain whether this issue will cause any delays in the project.</p>
<p>Nitesh Tiwari and co-producer Yash have not yet responded to the reports.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yash had previously confirmed his involvement in &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; as a co-producer, expressing his ambition to showcase Indian cinema globally. He mentioned collaborating with a VFX studio in L.A., where he met Namit, with whom he shared a vision for Indian cinema. They discussed various projects, and &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; became a focal point of their discussions, as Namit had already begun working on it.</p>
<p>He continued, &lsquo;The &lsquo;Ramayana,&rsquo; as a subject, deeply resonates with me and I had an approach in my mind for it. <p>Yash has reportedly been roped in to play the role of Raavan, but there has been no confirmation yet.</p>

<p>Indian actor-producer Yash's Monster Mind Creations and producer Namit Malhotra's Prime Focus Studios have collaborated on an adaptation of the Indian epic &lsquo;Ramayana&rsquo; for global audiences.&nbsp;</p>
<p>The film will be directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for &lsquo;Dangal,&rsquo; the highest-grossing Indian film of all time.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Yash is renowned for the &lsquo;K.G.F.&rsquo; action film franchise, with its second part being the fourth-highest-grossing Indian film ever.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Malhotra's recent credit includes &lsquo;Fighter,&rsquo; the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024 so far. He is also the global CEO of visual effects company DNEG, which has contributed to seven VFX Oscar-winning films, including &lsquo;Dune: Part One&rsquo; and &lsquo;Tenet.&rsquo;</p>
<p>Over 60 film and TV adaptations of the mythological epic &lsquo;Ramayana,&rsquo; a timeless story of good triumphing over evil, have been produced, including Indian, anime, and Thai versions. Malhotra has been working on a big-screen adaptation for years and connected with Yash, finding a shared vision for the project.</p>

Bobby Deol and Vijay Sethupathi are also reportedly in talks for the roles of Kumbhakarna and Vibhishana, respectively. &nbsp;According to the reports, Ranbir Kapoor will join the shoot in mid-April while Yash will join much later after completin the shoot for his another project &lsquo;Toxic&rsquo;. The video featured several glimpses of huge pillars and massive palace-like structures. In the caption of the video, Akruti wrote, &lsquo;Ramayana day 1&rsquo;. However, the video was deleted later.</p>
<p>Reports from April 2 revealed that Nitesh Tiwari conducted a puja on the sets before commencing shooting for the film with secondary actors. Ranbir Kapoor, set to portray Lord Ram, is expected to join the shoot soon.</p>

<p>A source close to the development said, &lsquo;It's understandable that a magnum opus like Ramayana requires time and intense pre-production work, as they are going into the smallest details of everything to get it right on screen. Which is why things are progressing at a slower pace. Also, as far as the casting is concerned, Ranbir Kapoor is still committed to playing Lord Ram, while Alia Bhatt, who was approached for the project, is no longer part of it. The actress was in talks for the role of Goddess Sita, but the collaboration didn&rsquo;t work out because of date issues.&rsquo;</p>
