Bhartiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Saturday accused the Centre of shielding former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is facing sexual harassment allegations.
Country's top wrestlers including Malik, Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, accused the WFI chief of sexual harassment and intimidation.
Alleging that the wrestlers who have revolted against Singh are under government pressure, Tikait, an influential leader of the Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU), accused the central government of trying to save the BJP MP.
The Khap panchayats will support whatever decision is taken by the wrestlers and the committee which carried out the prolonged agitation, Tikait told reporters in Haridwar on the sidelines of a three-day Kisan Mahakumbh.
"The Centre is busy protecting Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. It is a fact reflected in the charge sheet filed against him. When the government has made up its mind about saving someone, it has many ways to do so," he said.
"The wrestlers had negotiations with the government and they were assured of action. The wrestlers are doing government jobs. They had long been agitating. When an agitation goes on for so long, it loses steam and the players make compromises which is what has happened in this case," Tikait said.&nbsp; Tikait's fresh salvo against the Centre comes in the backdrop of Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik's Twitter video where it appeared that the wrestlers were distancing themselves from the farmer unions that have supported them since April.&nbsp;

Calling farmer leader Rakesh Tikait a second rate person in his address to his supporters,  Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni, whose son is in jail over allegations of running over farmers, projected himself as someone "fighting the world". "Dogs bark on the side of the road, have nothing to say about them," the minister said during a speechspeech in his constituency Lakhimpur Kheri on Monday.Ashish Mishra is accused of running over four farmers and a journalist during a protest against farm laws at Lakhimpur Kheri on October 3. Three more were killed in the violence that erupted after the killings. "No one in the world will be able to disappoint you. No matter how many Rakesh Tikaits come - I know him very well, 'do kaudi ka aadmi hai', he fought two elections and lost his deposit (lost badly). If such a person protests, I do not respond. If his politics survives because of this, let it. I have never done anything wrong in my life," he said.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait has said his farmers' group would begin a campaign against the Centre's new military recruitment scheme Agnipath from August 7.
Addressing a farmers' congregation in the Tikri area of Baghpat district in western Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, Tikait said the "fight with the Central government and the Uttar Pradesh government" over the issue was yet to begin.
"The campaign against the Agnipath scheme will begin on August 7 and continue for over a week," the BKU national spokesperson said, seeking support of the farming community.
He also alleged that old police cases against farmers were being dug up to intimidate them in the wake of major protests in recent years.
"When the BJP's government was formed in Uttar Pradesh, the cases against BJP members were closed. So, either they should be prepared for cases or we are ready for a movement," Tikait said.
"Those in Lucknow and Delhi should listen to this carefully," he said. "You can break political parties, you can dissociate leaders of farmers' groups but cannot break the farmers. Farmers will protest against you (the two governments)." Tikait also highlighted issues related to acquisition of land, power tariff and pending sugarcane dues among others as he addressed the crowd of hundreds of farmers.
Tikait rose to national prominence during the 2020-21 protests in Delhi against the now-repealed central farm laws.

Miscreants on Monday threw ink on farmer leader Rakesh Tikait during an event organised by a farmers' organisation at the Gandhi Bhavan here.
Soon after the incident, clashes took place between the organisers and the miscreants leading to both sides attacking each other with plastic chairs.
Reacting to the incident, Tikait alleged that the ink attack on him was in connivance with the state government.
"The local police is responsible for it and it happened due to the connivance of the government," Tikait told reporters.
Black ink was seen on his turban, face, Kurta, and green shawl around his neck.

At a mahapanchayat in Kairana, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait whose outfit was part of the 13-month-long agrarian protests against the Centre, told a mammoth gathering that the Kairana exodus is a government plan and do not get influenced by it.
In 2016, former BJP MP Hukum Singh had claimed that close to 350 Hindus had left Kairana which was affected in the riots, due to threats from criminals. At the time, the Shamli district administration conducted a survey and claimed that only three families had fled the town after receiving alleged extortion threats.

At a mahapanchayat in Kairana, Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait whose outfit was part of the 13-month-long agrarian protests against the Centre, told a mammoth gathering that the Kairana exodus is a government plan and do not get influenced by it.
In 2016, former BJP MP Hukum Singh had claimed that close to 350 Hindus had left Kairana which was affected in the riots, due to threats from criminals. At the time, the Shamli district administration conducted a survey and claimed that only three families had fled the town after receiving alleged extortion threats.
In his speech on Sunday, Tikait, who received a rousing welcome at the mahapanchayat, cautioned people to remain alert about attempts to wedge a rift among them and asked them to remain focused on issues such as employment.

While lauding the govt for finally withdrawing the controversial farm laws, Tikait also accused them of diving the farming community
"They understood in one year that these laws are harmful and took the laws back. They did the right thing by withdrawing the laws but tried to divide farmers by saying that they failed to make some people understand the laws. We are some people," Tikait said.

Terming the withdrawal of the three farm laws "historic", Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) leader Hannan Mollah said on Friday that the farmers' have only achieved half of their objective and they will now press for a law to guarantee minimum support price (MSP).
Mollah, the general secretary of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), said that he was cautious till the legislations were scrapped in Parliament as the BJP-led government was "not trustworthy".
"It is indeed a historic victory for all of us. However, I am a bit cautious and unwilling to trust this government until and unless these three laws are scrapped on the floor of Parliament," Mollah told PTI.
"There are instances where this government had said that they are withdrawing an ordinance, but nothing moved forward. We don't trust this government as it has a track record of saying something and doing something exactly opposite," he added.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in an address to the nation, announced that the government has decided to repeal the three farm laws, which were at the centre of protests by farmers for the past year.
Mollah, who is also a politburo member of the CPI(M), said the farmers have only half-achieved their demands.
"To think that our movement is over is not right as the farmers' movement started on two demands -- withdrawal of the three farms laws and bringing in a new law to guarantee MSP. So our demands have been half met. Now, what will be the form of the movement that will be decided through discussions," he said.
Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been protesting at the borders of the national capital since November 26 last year to demand repeal of the three farm laws -- Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, Farmers' (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 -- and enactment of a new law to guarantee MSP for crops.

Tikait said that the farmer groups will gather in Bahraich again on the day of &lsquo;bhog&rsquo;, the 13th day of mourning, and then will discuss and decide the future strategy.

MoS (Home) Misra's son Ashish Misra alias Monu has been named in an FIR lodged at a Lakhimpur Kheri police station.
According to a report from Lakhimpur Kheri, district officials on Tuesday night handed over compensation cheques of Rs 45 lakh each to the kin of two Kheri farmers under the agreement between agitating farmers and authorities.
The deceased farmers whose kin were given the compensation cheques are Lavpreet Singh of Palia tehsil and Nakshatra Singh of Dhaurahra tehsil.

'Arrest minister's son': Tikait's 1-week ultimatum to UP govt

Tikait said that the farmer groups will gather in Bahraich again on the day of &lsquo;bhog&rsquo;, the 13th day of mourning, and then will discuss and decide the future strategy.
Tikait, who visited the house of Gurvinder Singh, a farmer killed in the Lakhimpur violence, said the minister's son was seen by many people at the spot on the fateful day.
He added that people have several videos that will come up as soon as the net is restored.

According to a report from Lakhimpur Kheri, district officials on Tuesday night handed over <a href="https://www.editorji.com/india-news/lakhimpur-kheri-deaths-rs-45-lakh-to-kin-of-dead-farmers-retired-hc-judge-to-probe-1633341116136">compensation cheques of Rs 45 lakh </a>each to the kin of two Kheri farmers under the agreement between agitating farmers and authorities.
The deceased farmers whose kin were given the compensation cheques are Lavpreet Singh of Palia tehsil and Nakshatra Singh of Dhaurahra tehsil.

The minister said that the protesters first pelted stones on the vehicles of BJP workers due to which his driver lost control of the vehicle leading to the accident.

Union Minister Ajay Mishra on Sunday refuted allegations that his son Ashish Mishra was involved in the incident at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh in which farmers died and said that three BJP workers and a driver were beaten to death by "some elements" present among the protesting farmers there.
He also told PTI that the protesters first pelted stones on the vehicles of BJP workers due to which his driver lost control of the vehicle leading to the accident.
Some opposition leaders and farmer unions have alleged that the protesting farmers were run over by Mishra's son.
Mishra said his son was not present at the spot and he has photographic and video evidence to prove it.
"My son was present at the venue of the (UP deputy chief minister's) event and thousands of people, officers of the administration and police were present there," he said.
He said the incident happened when some BJP workers were going to receive UP Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya who had come to attend an event at Lakhimpur Kheri.
"Some elements in farmers, who were protesting, showed black flags and pelted stones on the car which turned turtle. Two farmers came under the car and died.
"Three BJP workers and the driver of the car were beaten to death by some people present there," he said.
"Had he (Ashish) been in that car, he would not have been alive today," the minister said, adding two vehicles were torched and their driver was killed by the mob.
Asked if there were any intelligence inputs about the incident, he said that there was information about peaceful protests, and termed the incident as a "betrayal".
There were anti-social elements in the farmers' agitation, who made efforts to make the agitation violent, he said.
"The farmers organisation must take this incident very seriously, as anarchists are trying to create instability in the country. We have to be alert, and identify them," he said.
He also claimed that extremist organisations like the Babbar Khalsa have infiltrated into the farmers' protest.
"Over 10 party workers are seriously injured and have been hospitalised," he said.
The minister's son Ashish Mishra also said that he was not present at the site.
"Our cars were torched and workers were attacked. So many of our workers are still missing. Would I be standing here if I had been in one of the cars," he told mediapersons.
Eight people were killed in the violence on Sunday during a protest by farmers who are agitating against the Centre's three agri laws.

It has been more than an year since farmers started protesting against the three contentious farm laws.

Since the passing of the three contentious farm laws in both the houses last year, farmers continue to protest on Delhi borders and across the country demanding to repeal them. Here is a look at the farmer protest which has continued for 365 days and counting. 
Several trains were cancelled, highways and key roads blocked and many thousands stranded for hours on Monday as a nationwide 10-hour shutdown against the Centre&rsquo;s three agri laws disrupted lives across parts of India, particularly in the north.
The impact of the 6 am to 4 pm Bharat Bandh, which saw demonstrations in many places, passed off relatively peacefully with no reports of injuries or serious clashes. It was felt the most around Delhi, Punjab, Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh, the centre of the farm protests, and also in large pockets of Kerala, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.
Protesters blocked highways and arterial roads and squatted on tracks in several places from morning as the shutdown called by the Samyukta Kisan Morcha, an umbrella body of 40 farmer unions got underway.
The blockade was lifted at 4 pm.
The day marks one year since President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the three controversial laws and 10 months since thousands of farmers set up camp at Delhi&rsquo;s border points to voice their protest.
Though large parts of India were untouched by the shutdown, north India felt the pinch with about 25 trains being affected and massive jams that prevented the cross border movement of commuters as well as trucks carrying essentials.
The Delhi-NCR region, including the satellite towns of Gurgaon, Ghaziabad and Noida, where thousands cross the borders each day was particularly hit. Delhi itself was mostly unaffected, but there was chaos at its borders with traffic snarls that stretched through much of the day and commuters who couldn&rsquo;t get to office, or college or even to that important doctor&rsquo;s appointment. Images of cars waiting to be let through, lined up back to back as far as the eye could see, told their own story.
While there were instances of unwell patients being let through, among those stuck at the Delhi-Gurgaon border was a man who couldn&rsquo;t make it for his appointment at the Medanta Hospital in Gurgaon.
Farmers blocked other roads leading into the national capital, including at Ghazipur in western Uttar Pradesh Not far away in Sonipat in Haryana, some farmers squatted on tracks. In nearby Patiala in Punjab, too, members of the BKU-Ugrahan sat on the tracks to register their protest.
Punjab saw a complete shutdown in many places, including Moga, where farmers blocked national highways. Farmer leaders from Punjab have, in many ways, spearheaded the year-long protest.
&ldquo;#I Stand With Farmers &amp; appeal the Union Govt. to repeal the three anti-farmer laws. Our farmers have been struggling for their rights since more than a year &amp; it is high time that their voice is heard&hellip;,&rdquo; Punjab&rsquo;s new chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi said in a tweet.
In neighbouring Haryana, highways in Sirsa, Fatehabad and Kurukshetra were blocked.
There were also reports of farmers squatting on rail tracks at a few places in the two states.
&ldquo;More than 20 locations are being blocked in Delhi, Ambala, and Firozepur divisions. About 25 trains are affected due to this," a Northern Railway spokesperson said.
Farmer leader Yogendra Yadav told a TV channel that the bandh was &ldquo;extraordinarily successful&rdquo;. Expressing happiness at the &ldquo;geographical spread&rdquo; of the strike, he said farmer organisations were out on the street in many states. He also apologised to those who were affected saying, "Please bear with us." Many non-NDA parties extended support to the bandh. These included the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, Samajwadi Party, Telugu Desam Party, Bahujan Samaj Party, Left parties and Swaraj India. The YSR Congress government in Andhra Pradesh had also announced support to the Bharat Bandh.
In West Bengal, life was largely unaffected but Left activists blocked roads and railway tracks in many places. Images from Kolkata showed protesters swarming a section of a railway track. Similar images came in from West Midnapore with Left Front supporters blocking the IIT Kharagpur-Hijri railway line.
The ruling Trinamool Congress stayed away but said it supported the demands of the SKM.
Elsewhere in the region, vehicular movement was impacted and shops shut in several places in Jharkhand, including in the state capital Ranchi and Dumka. Road blockades led to congestion on key highways.
In Bihar and Odisha, too, there was a mixed response.
RJD and CPI members blocked railway lines in Patna, Ara, Jahanabad and Madhepura in Bihar and several roads were closed too but markets were mostly open and offices registered usual attendance. Most private schools in the state were, however, shut.
In Odisha, reports came in of protesters at different places in towns such as Bhubaneswar, Balasore, Rourkela and Sambalpur. They also blocked the railway lines at Bhubaneswar station.
In Kerala, where the strike was supported by the ruling LDF and the opposition Congress-led UDF, KSRTC bus services were off the road with almost all trade unions in the state taking part. People who had to travel opted for private modes of transport while others stayed home.
The shutdown did not have any major impact in the initial few hours in Karnataka with all business and establishments functioning normally and transport services available. However, attempts to organise a 'Rasta Roko' at national and state highways led to disruption of vehicular movement in some places, especially in Bengaluru.
All emergency establishments and essential services, including hospitals, medical stores, relief and rescue work and people attending to personal emergencies were exempted from the strike.
Expressing support for protesting farmers, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the farmers' non-violent 'satyagraha' is still resolute.
Posting rhyming lines in Hindi on Twitter, Gandhi said, "Kisano ka ahimsak satyagraha aaj bhi akhand hai, lekin shoshankar sarkar ko ye nahi pasand hai, isliye aaj Bharat Bandh hai (Farmers' non-violent satyagraha is resolute even today, but the exploitative government does not like this and that's why it is Bharat Bandh today)." "We have to stand unitedly with the farmers, otherwise the future of our nation is dark," Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera told reporters.
The SKM on Sunday had appealed for complete peace during the bandh and urged all Indians to join the strike.
&ldquo;It is a day to express support to the annadatas (farmers) of the country, the ones who keep all Indians alive,&rdquo; it said in a statement.
The government and farmer unions have held 11 rounds of talks so far, the last being on January 22, to break the deadlock and end the farmers' protest.&nbsp; Talks have not resumed following widespread violence during a tractor rally by protesting farmers on January 26.
The three laws -- The Farmers' Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020 -- were passed by Parliament in September last year.
Farmer groups have alleged the laws will end the 'mandi' and the MSP procurement systems and leave farmers at the mercy of big corporates. The government has rejected these apprehensions as misplaced and asserted that these steps will help increase farmers' income.
