Rahul Dravid, who masterminded India&rsquo;s T20 World Cup 2024 triumph, is set to take over Rajasthan Royals&rsquo; head coach role in the IPL 2025.
Dravid, who is currently on a short career-break since India&rsquo;s victory at Barbados in June, will soon start working with the franchise on important issues such as player retention ahead of the auction later this year.
&ldquo;The talks have reached the final stages and he will soon step into the head coach job,&rdquo; a source close to the development told PTI.
Kumar Sangakkara, who has been Royals&rsquo; Director of Cricket since 2021, will continue in his role and is likely to be more hands-on with Barbados Royals (CPL) and Paarl Royals (SA20).
Dravid has a long-standing association with Royals as their captain for two seasons in 2012 and 2013 before serving as mentor for two more years.
Dravid then moved to Delhi Capitals in a similar role in 2016 and continued with the team till he assumed the role of the head of National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.
In 2021, he moved on from NCA to take up India&rsquo;s head coach role from Ravi Shastri.
Now at Royals, Dravid will reunite with Sanju Samson, who is all set to be retained as RR captain for another season. Samson blossomed first under the 52-year-old.
Meanwhile, ESPNCricinfo reported that Vikram Rathour, who was batting coach of India during Dravid&rsquo;s tenure, could be roped in by the franchise as its assistant coach.&nbsp;

According to fresh reports in the media, the former India head coach is likely to head back to the Rajasthan Royals.
"Talks are going on between RR and Dravid, and an announcement in this regard is round the corner," Times of India quoted a source as saying.
Dravid joined the Royals in 2011 as captain and played for 3 seasons before retiring from the IPL. In 2014, he took over as mentor of the franchise for 2 years. Dravid then headed to the Delhi Daredevils and coached them before leaving in 2017 over 'conflict of interest'. He then shifted focus to grassroots-level cricket in India before being appointed as the director of the National Cricket Academy.

One of the main reasons why Dravid didn't want to continue with that role after 3 years of service was because he didn't want to spend 10 months a year travelling, keeping himself away from the family. However, coaching or mentoring an IPL side will require just 2-3 months of his time in a year, something which will suit him well.
A mentor's position was vacant at KKR after Gambhir left and it was reported that the two might swap career roles. But it seems that Rahul Dravid is set for an IPL homecoming by returning to the Royals.

Rahul Dravid on Monday confirmed that the T20 World Cup will be his last tournament as head coach of the Indian cricket team.
Dravid's announcement was anticipated as he was not expected to reapply for the high-profile job after the BCCI invited the applications last month.
Speaking to reporters ahead of India's World Cup opener against Ireland, Dravid said he enjoyed every bit of his coaching tenure.
"Every tournament is important. Every game that I've coached for India has been very important for me. So for me this is no different just because it is going to be the last one that I'm in charge of," he said when asked if this tournament held more significance as it was his last one in charge of the team.
The former India captain had taken charge of the team in November 2021 following the T20 World Cup that year.
"I love doing the job. I've really enjoyed coaching India and I think it's a truly special job to do. I enjoyed working with this team and it's a great bunch of boys to work with but yeah but just considering you know unfortunately just the kind of schedules and where I find myself in the stage in my life I don't think I'll be able to reapply.
"So yeah, obviously it'll be my last one but having said that it's no different for me to be very honest. From the first day I took the job, I always felt that every game was important and every game mattered and that will not change," he asserted.
India will be aiming to win an elusive ICC trophy here and provide a perfect farewell for the coach.

Rahul Dravid underlined the importance of staying together and functioning as a unit to be triumphant in the tough world of Test cricket while delivering a motivational dressing room speech after India registered a memorable 4-1 series win over England.
After losing the opening Test in Hyderabad, the hosts bounced back in stunning fashion to win the next four matches to claim the series.
"Series like this have to be earned and this is tough. Test cricket is hard at times. It's hard in terms of your skill. It's hard physically, as you've seen, it's hard mentally," Dravid said in a video posted on BCCI.tv.
"But it's great satisfaction at the end of it. The satisfaction that you get winning a series like this coming from one behind to be able to win four. I think it's just phenomenal," he added.
As key players like Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul, who played only the opener, were unavailable, India found heroes in some young names in the series. The home side handed debuts to five players -- Rajat Paitidar, Dhruv Jurel, Devdutt Padikkal, Sarfaraz Khan and Akash Deep -- in the marquee series.
In fact, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja too missed a Test each.
The Indian coach was a chuffed man after some of those young names emerged with flying colours from the series.
'For a lot of you young guys, especially coming into this group, you are going to need each other to succeed. Whether you're a batsman or bowler or whatever you are, your success is tied in with other people's success.'
"All of you are invested in each other's success. And that's really important going forward. It's not about your success, but it's about how you can help other people succeed, which will also help you succeed," he said.
The 51-year-old was delighted to see the players finding ways to turn the tide whenever they were put under pressure.
"There were times in the series that we were really challenged and pushed and we found a way to bounce back, which speaks to the skills that we have, the resilience that we have, the character that we have.
"On many occasions in this series the games could have gone either way. But we always found people in this dressing room who stepped up and turned the game our way. And that was fantastic." Dravid also said the team also did well to maximise advantageous positions.
"So, you not only need to win the games when you have to fight back, which we did really well. But you have to also win the games when you're ahead and you don't let the opposition come back in any situation." The former India captain praised the team for emerging winners from a long, gruelling series against a quality opposition.
"We talked about this at the start of the series as well. Irrespective of whether we win or lose this is going to teach us a lot -- a five Test match series. You're going to go through a lot of ups and downs.
"It's a long series, you're going to be tested. And it was going to teach us a lot about us as players or some as a team, and a lot about us and we've come through that exceptionally with terrific flying colours and we face challenges both on and off the field."

India head coach Rahul Dravid on Monday said that the team management does not ask for rank turners while playing at home and it is tough to predict how a particular pitch would play out over the course of 5 days in a Test.
The previous series against England in 2021 and against Australia last year were played on raging turners with most games ending within three days. However, the first two Tests against England in the ongoing series have gone on for four days.
While Hyderabad was a slow turner, Vizag surface remained flat for the major part of the match.
Dravid is someone who is regular with his pitch inspections before and during the game and a lot of times in between sessions as well.
His longtime teammate Sourav Ganguly recently said that India don&rsquo;t need to play on rank turners as they have a well balanced bowling attack.
Asked if more pitches like Vizag could be seen in the next three Tests, Dravid said he was clueless on the subject like anybody else.
&ldquo;Curators make the pitches. We don't ask for rank turners. Obviously tracks in India would spin, how much they'll spin, how less they'll spin, how much. I'm not an expert, obviously, wickets in India in the course of four or five days, they do turn but how much they're going to turn.
&ldquo;I sometimes get told they'll turn on the third day, but they turn on the first day. Sometimes I get told they'll turn on the second day and they don't turn till day four," Dravid said.
"So I'm sometimes as clueless as anybody else. We look at the wicket and we try and do the best we can on what we get. We go to Rajkot, we'll see what we can get and play with whatever we get in front of.&rdquo;
Indian batters have been guilty of throwing away their starts in the series. There were three 80s in the series opener and only Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill played big knocks in Vizag while others failed to cash on to their starts.
Dravid said India could have scored more runs in both the innings and he expects more consistency from the younger crop.
&ldquo;If I'm being honest, I think we left a few runs on the board in both the innings. Again, I think, that's maybe a function of the fact that we do have a lot of young batsmen coming through, I think still figuring out Test cricket a little bit, but you don't have a lot of time to figure out Test cricket.
&ldquo;Certainly in the first innings, 396, I thought, was underpowered, we left 75 on the board. You win a toss, you have one guy who gets a double hundred. You should be pushing 475-450 in these conditions.
"And then in the second innings, maybe after losing a couple of wickets, 250 was probably about par. So, it's a work in progress. We'll hopefully get a little bit better and we'll keep improving,&rdquo; said the coach.
&lsquo;England&rsquo;s batting is not about wild slogging&rsquo; =========================== Dravid praised England&rsquo;s uber aggressive batting approach, also known as Bazball, and said he always expected a tough series. Both teams go into the third Test in Rajkot at 1-1.
&ldquo;They (England) are playing very well. Whether you call it bazball or whatever you call it. I'm not sure how happy they are about it, but they are playing really good cricket. Let's be honest, they played well, they've shown good skills. it's not like wild slogging," said Dravid.
&ldquo;They are actually showing some very good skills. Some of the shots they are playing require a lot of skill and ability. You can't just come there and execute those things and just say, well, I want to play attackingly and not have the skills to execute it.
&ldquo;So, I think there's more to it than just attacking cricket. I've seen at times they know when to pull back, when to attack. So they're playing slightly differently, no doubt about it, but they've been very successful and they're playing it well. We know we're up against the challenge and we're looking forward to it,&rdquo; he said.

Ishan Kishan needs to decide when he will start playing "some form of cricket" and then only can he be considered for national selection, head coach Rahul Dravid said on Monday addressing queries on his prolonged break from both international and domestic cricket.
A regular member of the Indian team across formats not so long ago, Kishan has been missing from action since he asked for a break in the middle of the South Africa tour in December citing personal reasons. He last turned up for India in November and has not featured for Jharkhand in ongoing Ranji Trophy.
After the series levelling win over England, Dravid tried to clear the air over Kishan&rsquo;s absence once again.
"There is a way back for anyone and everyone. I don&rsquo;t want to go on labouring about the Ishan Kishan point. Have tried to explain this as best as I can, the point was he had requested a break, we were happy to give him the break," said Dravid in the media interaction.
"Whenever he is ready, I didn't say he has to play domestic cricket, I said whenever he is ready, he needs to play some cricket and come back. The choice is his. We are not forcing him to do anything," Dravid didn't seem too amused with the queries and also made it team management's stance clear on the issue.

Considering KS Bharat&rsquo;s ordinary run with the bat in the ongoing series against England, India could do with Kishan's services. Rishabh Pant has not yet full recovered from the injuries he suffered in a horrific car accident in December, 2022. Besides K S Bharat, Dhruv Jurel was also part of the first two Tests.
"We are in touch with him, it is not that we have not been in touch. He has not yet started playing right so at the moment it is not something we can consider. Because you know he maybe he is not ready. He decides when he wants to be ready. We have got options with Rishabh injured and stuff. I am sure the selectors will weight all options,&rdquo; he said.
Bharat himself would agree he could have done better with bat&nbsp;
Dravid was satisfied with the way Bharat kept in the first two Tests but could not say the same about his batting.
He mistimed a half tracker to be caught at mid-on in the second innings and has not done much with the bat so far in the series.
"Disappointed is a strong word (for Bharat). I would not use that word. At times, young players do take time to develop. They grow at their own pace. Yeah I mean as a coach, you want players to grab the opportunities. His keeping has been good, he will also agree that he could have done better with the bat," added the head coach.

Shubman Gill, who had a wonderful run in white-ball cricket over the last year, faltered twice against England left-arm spinner Tom Hartley in the first red-ball assignment of the year at home.
"I wouldn't be so harsh to judge them. But it was a challenging wicket, and it's been a bit of a challenge for some of our young batsmen to adapt. But you know, they've got the skill," Dravid said in his post-match press meet.
However, the batting legend expressed satisfaction with the way junior batters have been progressing.
"They've come here by scoring a lot of runs in domestic cricket. They are being picked on merit. Sometimes it does take time for people to adjust. They're working really hard and there's a lot of thought going into their batting," the coach said without taking names.
Every batter is unique and at this level, everyone needs to have their own methods to counter tougher challenges that lay ahead of them.
"It's just a question of them looking to constantly improve and develop skills that may help them counter these kinds of conditions a little bit better,&rdquo; said Dravid.
Such has been the Indian senior team's calendar that some of the younger players hardly get time to play first-class cricket.
Dravid thought the young batsmen's minimal game time in First Class was behind their travails.
"We've to get better as a lot of players are quite young. A lot of these guys do play a lot of white-ball cricket and maybe don't get a lot of time to play First-Class cricket. So, they're learning and I think they're getting there," Dravid said.
However, Dravid said the failure of some of the batsmen to convert that start did hurt India in the first innings.
India were bowled out for 420 in their first dig, and the Bengaluru man felt that they were probably 70-80 runs short.
"I thought we left probably 70 runs on the board in the first innings. Conditions were good to bat on day two and got some good starts but we didn&rsquo;t really capitalise. We didn't get a 100, you know, a really big hundred. The second innings is always going to be challenging," he elaborated.
However, Dravid was not ready to blame the Hyderabad pitch for India's troubles, and, if anything, his words were an exhortation for the younger batters to improve their craft.
"I wouldn't say this was a flat wicket by any stretch of the imagination. It was a good cricket wicket and it turned through the course of the game. It allowed you to score runs. As we saw, even in the fourth innings, you could score runs," said Dravid.
The former India captain, however, said the team could make a turnaround and looked forward to a keenly contested series.
"Batsmen have bailed us out in a few games, in some close games that we've had recently. But not this time but a great series to look forward to now. We've fallen behind but we have to show some character and look forward to that.
"I thought 190 was a really good lead but then again, not many teams will come in and score 420 in the third innings in India and not many players will make 196," he signed off.

&ldquo;We've had different people play after the last ODI World Cup for a variety of reasons. But I think it's just nice to see that there are some options (ahead of World Cup) who have put their hand up, and certainly shown that they've got skills to address.
"Some areas we might need some addressing in, and we were thinking about it,&rdquo; Dravid said in his post-match press conference.
The only concern for Dravid was the lack of team time ahead of the showpiece to be held in the West Indies and the USA.
The three-match series against Afghanistan, which India won 3-0, was India&rsquo;s last T20 assignment ahead of the World Cup.
&ldquo;Unfortunately, we really won't have much cricket as a team anymore. We will obviously have the IPL, and you know, everyone will be watching closely to see how some of those guys play and what are the slots we need to fill in the team,&rdquo; he said.
Dube emerged player of the series against Afghanistan for his 124 runs and two wickets, and Dravid was excited to have an all-rounder option to consider.
&ldquo;He's come back after a long time. He's certainly very much an improved player after coming back. There's no doubt that he always had the talent, but just really happy to see the way he performed in the series.
"I'm sure it will give him a lot of confidence as well, you come back in and play a series and you become the man of the series. It's great and has certainly put his hand up. He's going to have that opportunity to show it in the IPL again, like he did last year,&rdquo; said Dravid.
The wicketkeeper&rsquo;s slot too will come under scrutiny as India now have multiple choices in Jitesh, Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, who is yet to regain full fitness.
The former Indian captain did not rule out anyone from contention.
&ldquo;We've got quite a few keeping options out there. We saw a couple of guys in this game. There&rsquo;s Sanju, Kishan and Rishabh, I mean, we have all these guys. "We'll just have to see how things pan out over the course of the next few months and make a decision on what we think is the best way to go.&rdquo; The 51-year-old Bengaluru man was also impressed by captain Rohit Sharma&rsquo;s decision to give the ball to leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi in the second Super Over against Afghanistan on Wednesday night.

&ldquo;Rohit went with Bishnoi and it was his gut call. I think he felt that a spinner had a better chance to take two wickets. If they batted six balls, with the power that they had, they probably would have got 12 runs.
"But I thought Bishnoi was brilliant because he bowled two super balls. He pulled the length back. If the length had gone slightly fuller, you know, it would have gone for six. It was a really good gut call from Rohit to go for the wickets and be more aggressive rather than looking for a safer option,&rdquo; Dravid added.

"We are also talking about whether continuity (current coach/captain combination) is needed for the (T20) WC. We are hoping to reach a decision soon so that path forward is clear," he added.
It is also understood that the board is quite happy with the way Dravid has managed the team along with captain Rohit over the last two years despite not landing any global trophies The pair has guided India to the semifinals of the T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia and finals of the World Test Championship 2023 in England and the 50-over World Cup at home.
However, India won the Asia Cup beating Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in Colombo in September under their regime.
The official hinted that all the stakeholders involved including Rohit, chief selector Ajit Agarkar and a few other higher BCCI office-bearers will sit together soon to arrive at a final call.
VVS Laxman, the current NCA chief, is tipped to succeed Dravid as India head coach, and the official said they have kept their options open.
"Options are open (for head coach). He (Laxman) is familiar with the team, players and the methods. He also has experience working with the national team," he explained.
Laxman is currently with the Indian team as head coach for the five-match T20I series against Australia, and the former Indian batter has often stepped in for Dravid in the past whenever the latter was given a rest.

Jadeja has scored 81 runs in three innings and taken nine wickets in 55.3 overs with an economy rate of 3.78. These are very solid figures without being exceptional like the 400-plus runs from Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli or the 29 wickets that Jasprit Bumrah (15 in seven games) and Mohammed Shami (14 in three games) have shared between them.
"It's been exceptional. I think, you know, Jadeja, someone, if you look at the numbers, we look at stats, we look at data, we look at it quite a lot. I mean, he has been exceptional in this tournament," Dravid said when asked about someone like Jadeja's contribution.
"Because of how good our seamers have been and how fantastic it has been to watch them upfront, the performances of people like Jaddu (Jadeja) and Kuldeep (Yadav) have probably gone slightly unnoticed," said Dravid as he tried to put things in context.
A timely 39 not out against New Zealand in a tricky chase, 35 that took India past the 350-run mark versus Sri Lanka and tying Australia in knots in the opening game, Jadeja has been the 'impact player' for India in this campaign.
Give him a situation and the Super King from Chennai is almost sure to come up trumps.
"Sometimes even having to bowl with a slightly wetter ball, because the ball has been slightly wet. Just the kind of control that he's given us through the middle, the way the control he's given Rohit has been sensational," said Dravid.
Jadeja has changed his bowling and is now landing the ball more on the seam to get purchase and also hitting one area consistently.
"And just the areas he's bowled as well, I think every metric point tells us that he's up there with anyone in this tournament in terms of just the areas he's been able to hit, the speeds he's been able to bowl at. And there's a lot of good conversations around the group in our bowlers' meetings with him," said the coach of his senior player.
Dravid feels that Jadeja is now in a phase where he knows exactly what he wants from himself.
"Just to see him in that kind of relaxed space and very clear about what he wants to do and what he wants to achieve. And just having that confidence to do that consistently over and over again has been fantastic." Dravid spoke about the two innings that he has played so far.
"When you're batting in the top three, you know that every single game you're going to get an opportunity to play. Sometimes at six and seven, you're not really sure when you're going to get a chance. Or even sometimes you won't even get a game. Or you won't even get a hit like they haven't for the first two or three games, the way we batted.
"He's (Jadeja) just come in and played critical knocks. Even the last one, he was able to really give us that little bit of a flip, a nice little 30 there. And so that's really good. And then his fielding is incredible, to have someone like him at point and taking some of the catches that he has. So really great all-around package for us, and someone who's really had a fantastic tournament. A little bit, maybe, gone under the radar a bit," the coach added.
The coach seemed happy that Suryakumar Yadav was showing a different side to his batting with a gritty 49 on a tough track against England.
"You've got to keep evolving. You've got to keep getting better. And the more kinds of situations he (Surya) finds himself in and he comes out of it, like he did really well against England, the better he's going to get at it," Dravid said about 'Mr 360'.
What has impressed Dravid the most is the areas of scoring which Surya has improved upon, and he is not just looking to play his T20 game.
"Yes, I mean, there are just in terms of just the areas in which he scores in T20 cricket and how quickly he has to go in T20 cricket. He's obviously been exceptional at that.
"And it's good to see that in one-day cricket, he's also realising that maybe at times you can give yourself a little bit more time to settle in. And then you know how dangerous he can be at the death." Nearly 10 years of quality domestic cricket and 82 first-class games have really helped Surya, feels Dravid.
"I think he has that experience because he's played so much of domestic cricket. He's been around for the last 10 years. So, I think, we're sort of relying a lot also on his experience to be able to read a situation really well.
"Like against England, when we have wickets down, then probably you need him to play a slightly different kind of role for a while and then look to go hard at the end." Surya and Jadeja are two players, who are expected to be the X-factors at the back-end in Hardik Pandya's absence.
"It's nice to have that experience of people like him and Jadeja at the back-end just to be able to read that situation and play according to the situation. And that's really important in one-day cricket.
"T20 cricket sometimes, you know, you just have to play in one way. One day, sometimes lower down the order you can actually, you need to be able to be smart enough to read a game and read a situation."&nbsp;
