A 21-year-old British Sikh was sentenced to nine-year jail for trying to kill late Queen Elizabeth II.

A UK court on Thursday sentenced a 21-year-old British Sikh man to nine years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the country&rsquo;s first case of treason in over 40 years, having scaled the walls of Windsor Castle on Christmas Day 2021 armed with a loaded crossbow to tell royal guards that he was there to kill Queen Elizabeth II.
Jaswant Singh Chail, who claimed he wanted to &ldquo;assassinate&rdquo; the late monarch as revenge for the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar according to a social media video that emerged soon after his arrest, has been handed a &ldquo;hybrid&rdquo; sentence order to take into account his mental health issues.
During a televised sentencing hearing at the Old Bailey court in London, Justice Nicholas Hilliard ruled that Chail must remain at Broadmoor Hospital, a high-security psychiatric hospital in Berkshire until he is considered fit to be transferred into custody.
&ldquo;The act was conceived in 2021 when he was not psychotic and he went on to become psychotic by a process,&rdquo; the judge noted as he stated his reasoning behind the sentencing.
"The defendant harboured homicidal thoughts which he acted on before he became psychotic. His intention was not just to harm or alarm the sovereign &ndash; but to kill her," he said.
The judge explained that he had taken Chail's autism, psychiatric testimony over his mental health and guilty plea into account when deciding upon the length of the sentence, which could have been over 20 years behind bars.
The court heard how it was during a family visit to Amritsar in 2018 that he learnt more about the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and decided to &ldquo;give his life purpose&rdquo; by avenging the killings by assassinating the late Queen, who passed away aged 96 in September 2022.
Last month during his trial, it emerged that Chail had written a letter to express his &ldquo;distress and sadness&rdquo; as an apology to the royal family and King Charles III.
According to court reports from the hearing, Chail&rsquo;s &ldquo;strong family unit&rdquo; includes his father, a software consultant working in aerospace, his mother, a special needs teacher, and his twin sister, a university student.
Chail was said to be suffering from mental health issues and the threat to the late Queen was instigated by an artificial intelligence &ldquo;girlfriend&rdquo; named Sarai and inspired by his &lsquo;Star Wars&rsquo; fascination.
Earlier, he had pleaded guilty to an offence under Section 2 of the Treason Act, 1842; an offence of threats to kill contrary to Section 16 of the Offences Against the Person Act 1861; and an offence of possession of an offensive weapon contrary to Section 1 of the Prevention of Crime Act 1953.
&ldquo;He had made a video of himself stating his desire to harm the late Queen, which he sent to a group of contacts shortly before he was arrested. Further enquiries into Chail uncovered further evidence of his planning and motives. Evidence recovered by officers showed that he harboured ill-feeling towards the British empire for its past treatment of Indian people,&rdquo; a Met Police statement noted.
The Queen was in her private apartments at Windsor Castle at the time of Chail&rsquo;s intrusion on the morning of December 25, 2021. Two officers saw the intruder within the grounds of the Castle and one approached him.
He was wearing black clothing and a handmade metal mask and said to the officers he was there to kill Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Chail was carrying a crossbow loaded with a bolt, and the officers drew their Taser gun and arrested him.
The social media video which emerged later showed a masked man identifying himself as Indian Sikh Jaswant Singh Chail and saying he wanted to &ldquo;assassinate&rdquo; the Queen as revenge for the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in Amritsar in 1919.
Under the 1842 Treason Act, it is an offence to assault the British Sovereign or have a firearm or offensive weapon in their presence with intent to injure or alarm them or to cause a breach of peace.

The alleged plot had come to light when an officer visited an Irish pub. He was told by a man that he wanted revenge for his daughter who was "killed in Northern Ireland by a rubber bullet".
The possible attack points would have been Golden Gate Bridge or Yosemite National Park.
The 1983 visit eventually went ahead as planned.

The nation's central bank on 2 February 2023 said that the new currency note will feature an Indigenous design honouring the "culture and history of the First Australians". The other side of the note will continue to feature the Australian parliament, the reserve bank said. The $5 bill is Australia's only bank note to feature the monarch.
It said the decision followed consultation with the government, which supported the change. Treasurer Jim Chalmers weighed in on the decision, saying the change was an &ldquo;opportunity to strike a good balance.&rdquo; &ldquo;The monarch will still be on the coins, but the $5 note will say more about our history and our heritage and our country, and I see that as a good thing,&rdquo; he told reporters in Melbourne.

On Sunday, Sir John Major told The Mail that his meeting with King Charles never happened and called the scene a &lsquo;barrel load of malicious nonsense&rsquo;.

The 73-year-old monarch, who acceded to the throne on the passing of his mother Queen Elizabeth II last month, will be officially bestowed with his crown and royal paraphernalia at the coronation ceremony to be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The palace said the King will be crowned alongside his wife, Queen Consort Camilla.
&ldquo;The coronation will reflect the monarch&rsquo;s role today and look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry,&rdquo; the palace said.
During the coronation ceremony, the sovereign is &ldquo;anointed, blessed and consecrated&rdquo; by the Archbishop of Canterbury. After receiving the orb and sceptres, the Archbishop places St Edward's Crown on the Sovereign's head.
Traditionally, the coronation is a solemn religious service, together with an occasion for celebration and pageantry. The ceremony has retained a similar structure for over a thousand years, and next year&rsquo;s coronation is expected to include the same core elements while recognising the spirit of our times.
For the last 900 years, the ceremony has taken place at Westminster Abbey &ndash; also the site of the Queen&rsquo;s state funeral. Since 1066, the coronation service has almost always been conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury. The coronation of the new sovereign traditionally takes place some months after accession to the throne, following a period of national and royal mourning as well as allowing time for the preparation required to organise the ceremony.
It is expected that King Charles will sign a proclamation formally declaring the date of the coronation at a meeting of the Privy Council of senior advisers later this year.
According to reports, Charles is expected to opt for a scaled down version of the grand ceremony, with fewer costume changes and a shorter service.
The Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in June 1953 was attended by representatives of the Houses of Parliament, Church and State. Prime ministers and leading citizens from the Commonwealth and representatives of other countries also attended.
During the ceremony, the sovereign takes the coronation oath, the form and wording of which have varied over the centuries. The late Queen undertook to rule according to law, to exercise justice with mercy and to maintain the Church of England.

For over 1,000 years, England has been led by a royal family, a hereditary monarchy. But with the death of Queen Elizabeth II, is Britain's royal era over? As Charles III becomes king, anti-monarchists in the United Kingdom are more hopeful, confident, and preparing to go on the offensive.
In the last 1,000 years, there was one brief period when England was a republic, with no monarch as the head of state, ironically during the reign of the first king named Charles.
This happened around 400 years ago, in 1649, when King Charles I was convicted and executed for high treason. However, England's republican era ended after around a decade. In 1660, the monarchy was restored with Charles II as king.

New Zealand held a referendum in 2016 which decided to keep the UK flag a part of the New Zealand flag. But Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has said that she expects the country to become a republic in her lifetime. Jamaica has already started the process of becoming a republic. The Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda has announced a referendum within 3 years to decide the issue. Belize has also announced its intention to get rid of the British monarch.

The man was arrested under the UK’s Public Order Act and taken into custody, Metropolitan Police said. The incident occurred on Friday night and eyewitnesses reported seeing the man “run up” towards the raised platform on which the late monarch's coffin is laid along with the Imperial crown and other regalia.
"Around 10pm on Friday 16 September, officers from the Met's Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command detained a man in Westminster Hall following a disturbance,” the Met Police said in a statement.
"He was arrested for an offence under the Public Order Act and is currently in custody," the statement said.

Philip was apparently not a fan of the show. Matt recalled how a good friend of his, who sat next to the late Duke of Edinburgh at dinner, asked if he had watched the Netflix series. To this, Prince Philip apparently replied: ‘Don't be ridiculous.’
Matt said, ‘A friend of mine sat next to him at a dinner once and I think Philip asked my friend if he made The Crown," Smith said. "Then the first course came out, and then the second course came out and then the third course came out and my friend couldn't resist by the end of the meal he was like, 'Philip I have to ask, have you watched The Crown?' and apparently he turned round to him and went, 'Don't be ridiculous.'
Smith, who will not be able to return to the UK for The Queen's funeral procession on September 19, said that he might watch it at a local pub with a group of friends.
‘I think it's a piece of history. I don't think we'll ever have a monarch that serves for 70 years again. She saw 13 prime ministers come and go, 14 presidents or something like that and I just want to be in London. I want to experience it, I want to share in the ceremony of it, really,’ he said.
Season 5 of ‘The Crown’ is expected to release in November this year.

Nearly six million people tried to follow a British Royal Air Force transport aircraft taking Queen Elizabeth II's coffin from Edinburgh in Scotland to London, making it the most tracked flight in history, website Flightradar24 said on Wednesday.
The Queen's coffin was flown on a RAF Globemaster C-17 on Tuesday evening, after lying in state at St Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh.
The previous record was when a US military aircraft carrying US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan last month was followed by 2.2 million people on Flightradar24.
On Tuesday, nearly six million people tried to follow the British military plane's route from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt within its first minute in the air, the website said.
The huge traffic caused disruptions to the site, where users can track the path of planes in the air.
More than 4.79 million people watched on its site and app and 296,000 were watching on a YouTube stream, the BBC reported.
The flight used the callsign "Kittyhawk", used for any military flight with the Queen on board.
The C-17 Globemaster transport aircraft was earlier used to take humanitarian aid and weapons to Ukraine following Russia's invasion.
Prime Minister Liz Truss and Defence Secretary Ben Wallace were among those waiting at RAF Northolt for the flight carrying the coffin of the late monarch.

Flightradar24 said it had taken steps to make its platform as stable as possible before the plane took off.
The 82-year-old US politician's visit to Taiwan took place on August 2 amid the uncertainty about whether Pelosi would follow through on her pledge to visit the self-ruled island, which China says is a rebel province that should be reunified with the mainland, even by force.
The flight to Taiwan taken by Pelosi, the US House of Representatives Speaker, in August attracted interest as she was the highest-ranking American official in 25 years to visit Taiwan.
Pelosi flew aboard a Boeing C-40C jet (a military version of the Boeing 737 jetliner) operated by the US Air Force. The flight flew under the call sign “SPAR19.” Explaining how Tuesday's figures had dwarfed that traffic, Flightradar24 said: "Based on our experience last month, we expected a large influx of users, but this immediate, massive spike was beyond what we had anticipated." It said about 600,000 users were able to "successfully follow the flight before performance degraded".
"Even though our platform suffered under such heavy load, Queen Elizabeth II's final flight from Edinburgh to RAF Northolt is by far the all-time most tracked flight on Flightradar24 and will likely remain at the top for a long while," it said.

The coffin of Queen Elizabeth II departed Scotland on Tuesday evening for London, ahead of Monday’s state funeral.
Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died last week at Balmoral Castle in Scotland after reigning for 70 years. She was 96.
In a final farewell to the late monarch who was also Queen of Scotland, the cortege made its way by road to Edinburgh Airport at the conclusion of the Scottish ceremonial events to mark her death. 
“Scotland has now bid our Queen of Scots a sad, but fond farewell. We will not see her like this again,” said Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon.
The Scottish government said around 33,000 people filed past the coffin while it lay at rest at St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh for 24 hours since Monday.
“Scotland has bid a final and poignant farewell to our much-loved Elizabeth, Queen of Scots. Over these past few days, we have seen just how much Her Majesty meant to the people of Scotland. As anticipated, people from all walks of life gathered across the country and in our capital city to pay tribute to the only Monarch most of us have ever known,” said Sturgeon.
“The scenes on Sunday as Her Majesty’s cortege made the journey from Balmoral Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse, and then yesterday and today as thousands gathered along the Royal Mile and queued to enter St. Giles to see the Queen’s Coffin, will forevermore form a very special part of the history of Scotland,” she said.
The First Minister of the devolved government expressed sympathy and good wishes for King Charles and the royal family, as was also conveyed in the parliamentary ceremonies held in the region over the past few days since the Queen died in Scotland on Thursday.
“Thousands across the emergency services, local authorities, armed forces, volunteer networks, transport and government agencies have helped ensure that Scotland paid fitting tribute to The Queen, and that Scots from all walks of life could celebrate the unparalleled contribution she made in her 70-year reign. The events of recent days have provided a sincere, solemn and fitting tribute from the people of Scotland to Her Majesty The Queen,” added Sturgeon.
The Queen's oak coffin was taken by road to Edinburgh Airport and flown to London, accompanied by the Queen’s daughter Princess Anne, on a Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft that was used to evacuate thousands of people fleeing the Taliban in Kabul last year.
The C-17 Globemaster has also been used to take humanitarian aid and weapons to Ukraine following Russia's invasion.

Queen Elizabeth II, the UK's longest-serving monarch, died on September 8 at the Balmoral Castle in Scotland after reigning for 70 years. She was 96.
The national anthem played as the coffin was flown from Edinburgh Airport to London, accompanied by the Queen&rsquo;s daughter Princess Anne on a Royal Air Force (RAF) aircraft that has been previously used for humanitarian aid missions.
In an emotional statement, Anne &ndash; the Princess Royal described the journey with her late mother's coffin from Scotland to England as an &ldquo;honour and privilege&rdquo;.
&ldquo;I was fortunate to share the last 24 hours of my dearest Mother&rsquo;s life. It has been an honour and a privilege to accompany her on her final journeys,&rdquo; she said in a statement.
&ldquo;Witnessing the love and respect shown by so many on these journeys has been both humbling and uplifting. We will all share unique memories. I offer my thanks to each and every one who share our sense of loss. We may have been reminded how much of her presence and contribution to our national identity we took for granted,&rdquo; she said, while expressing gratitude for the support offered to her &ldquo;dear brother,&rdquo; King Charles III as he takes on the role of the monarch.
On landing at the RAF Northolt air base in west London, the cortege began its journey by road into central London.
King Charles III, who was in Northern Ireland earlier on Tuesday, had arrived at the royal residence in time to receive the coffin with Queen Consort Camilla.
The oak coffin was placed in a state hearse as a royal salute was given by an RAF guard of honour to set it off on its journey to the palace.

At the grand entrance of Buckingham Palace, the hearse was received by a guard of honour formed by the King&rsquo;s Guard and a bearer party then took the coffin to the Bow Room in the palace where it will be placed on trestles in the centre of the room.
Besides the senior royals including the Queen&rsquo;s children and grandchildren, the Rt Revd Dame Sarah Mullally, Dean of the Chapels Royal, conducted prayers followed by a rota of chaplains to the King keeping watch over the coffin overnight.
The Imperial State Crown and a wreath of flowers was placed on the coffin as the prayers were said in the presence of the King and other members of the royal family.
The coffin will remain overnight in the Bow Room before a royal procession on Wednesday afternoon to Westminster Hall for the start of the Lying-in-State when the public will be able to file past in Westminster Hall. The Bow Room is where the Queen has entertained several high-profile figures over the years, including former US President George Bush, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia and Premier League footballers.
The room was formerly known as the Bow Library and is situated in the west wing of Buckingham Palace behind Marble Hall.
It was named after the window that runs along one side and the room also has direct access to the palace's garden.
Despite the pouring rain, crowds remained steadfast with umbrellas in the queue that has already been forming of members of the public preparing to pay their respects at the Lying-in-State from Wednesday evening.

King Charles III on Monday addressed Parliament for the first time as Britain's monarch during which he pledged to follow the example of selfless duty set by his "darling late mother" Queen Elizabeth II in upholding "the precious principles of constitutional governance”.
Responding to the condolences offered by the House of Commons and Lords at Westminster Hall in London, the monarch reflected upon the "weight of history" as he pointed to the many symbols of his mother’s reign around the historic Westminster Hall within the Houses of Parliament complex and quoted from William Shakespeare to pay tribute to the Queen, who passed away aged 96 in Scotland on Thursday.
"While very young her late Majesty pledged herself to serve her country and her people and to maintain the precious principles of constitutional government which lie at the heart of our nation,” said Charles.
"This vow she kept with unsurpassed devotion. She set an example of selfless duty which with God's help and your counsels I am resolved faithfully to follow," he said.
Quoting Shakespeare, he noted: "As Shakespeare said of the earlier Queen Elizabeth, she was a pattern to all princes living." In setting the tone for his own relationship with MPs and peers, Charles described Parliament as "the living and breathing instrument of our democracy" and highlighted the “tangible connections to my darling late mother” all around, including the great bell of Big Ben – “one of the most powerful symbols of our nation throughout the world and housed within the Elizabeth Tower also named for my mother’s Diamond Jubilee”.
Around 900 members of Parliament and peers gathered for this stage of the constitutional ritual of State Mourning, as they pledged loyalty to the new sovereign. The Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, read out the condolence message, which was then handed to the new monarch.
"Deep as our grief is, we know yours is deeper... There is nothing we can say in the praise of our late Queen, your mother, that you do not already know," said Hoyle.
