The man you see lying down on a damaged mattress as others watch is Dr Raj Bahadur, the vice-chancellor of Baba Farid University of Health Sciences in Punjab&rsquo;s Faridkot district.&nbsp; &nbsp; Media reports say the top doctor was forced by Punjab&rsquo;s Health Minister Chetan Singh Jouramajra to lie down on a damaged mattress in front of staff and patients at a hospital during an inspection. &nbsp; &nbsp; The incident hasn&rsquo;t gone down well with the Indian Medical Association&rsquo;s Punjab unit and the Opposition who say the doctor who has over 45 years of experience was humiliated by the Aam Admi Party Minister. &nbsp;

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday said former MLAs will now get pension for only one term, doing away with the practice of drawing the benefit for each term served by them.
"Ex-MLAs in Punjab, even if they have won twice, five times or ten times, they will now get pension for one term only," said Mann in a video message while adding that several MPs are also getting pension for remaining MLAs earlier.
The CM said money saved from it will be spent on the welfare of people.
"Our political leaders, including MLAs, seek votes from you with folded hands by saying that give us a chance to serve you," Mann said addressing people.
But you will be surprised to know that several MLAs who won thrice, four times or five times and then after losing the elections or after not getting tickets for contesting the polls, get lakhs of rupees in pension per month, Mann said.
"Somebody gets Rs 3.50 lakh and somebody gets Rs 4.50 lakh and somebody gets Rs 5.25 lakh as pension. It puts a financial burden of crores of rupees on the exchequer," Mann said.
A reduction will also be made in their family pensions as well, Mann stated.
Mann said he has given necessary directions to the officers concerned in this regard.
An MLA gets a pension of Rs 75,000 per month for one term. Thereafter, an additional 66 per cent of the pension amount is given for each subsequent term.
A few days ago, SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal, who is 11-time legislator, had said he will not accept pension as an ex-MLA.
The nonagenarian had asked the Punjab government and the Vidhan Sabha speaker to divert his pension to some social work, "preferably to help some needy girl students in their education".

Exit Polls are out for five state Assembly polls. While the exact results will be out on March 10, exit polls keep up the political excitement in the run-up to counting.
The latest tranche of exit polls have predicted a BJP win in UP, an Aam Aadmi Party surprise in Punjab, a tight BJP-Congress contest in Uttarakhand, advantage BJP in Manipur and a hung house in Goa.
But how far have the exit polls been from the exact polls. A look at the last few <a href="https://www.editorji.com/elections" target="_blank">Assembly polls</a> shows that exit polls have been getting it all wrong in big contests.

Let's look at West Bengal.
Almost all exit polls predicted a close contest between the BJP and Trinamool. Some even gave the BJP a thumping majority. The poll of exit polls for Bengal pitched BJP at 138 seats Vs Trinamool's 141. But when the actual results came, it was a Trinamool landslide, while BJP remained a distant second. Didi's party romped home in 213 of the 294 seats, while the BJP won just 77.
Ditto in Haryana in 2019. With Assembly elections coming within months of BJP's emphatic Lok Sabha win, exit polls predicted an impressive win for the BJP in the state. As per the poll of polls, BJP was projected to romp home in close to 70 of the 90 seats, and Congress was relegated to a mere 13. But again the results were totally different, where BJP failed to secure a majority. The saffron party won 40 seats, much less than what exit polls gave it and Congress secured 31 seats, much more than the exit polls predictions.
Similarly in Bihar 2020, all exit polls predicted a win for RJD alliance. A couple of exit polls even gave RJD a landslide win with around 180 seats in the 243 member house. Here too the actual results were opposite of the exit polls. When the votes were counted, BJP-JDU alliance won a majority with 125 seats and the RJD alliance lost with 110 seats.
Even in Maharashtra 2019, exit polls had totally written off the Congress alliance. The exit polls largely predicted a sweeping win for the BJP alliance with some polls handing the alliance 220 out of 288 seats. What were the exact results? BJP alliance 164, Congress alliance 96.

So while exit polls may be good for political excitement before the actual counting, they need to be taken with a pinch of salt.

The BJP had been in power for more than seven years and was still blaming first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for the problems of the people, former prime minister and Congress leader Manmohan Singh said on Thursday in a scathing attack against the Modi-led government.
Targeting the Central government on a host of issues, including the farmers’ agitation, foreign policy, price rise and unemployment, Singh said ahead of the Punjab elections on February 20 that the BJP’s nationalism was based on the British policy of “divide and rule”.
The Congress played the message delivered in Punjabi at a press conference here.
According to Singh, the government had proved to be a “complete failure” on the issue of foreign policy. The Chinese army, he alleged, was occupying “our pious land for the last one year but efforts are being made to bury this issue”.
“Our relations with neighbouring nations are also deteriorating,” Singh said.
He said the government does not have trust in the country's constitution and “institutions are continuously being weakened”.
"On the one hand, people are facing problems of price rise and unemployment, on the other, the present government, which has been in power for the last seven and a half years, rather than admitting their mistakes and making amends, is still blaming first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru for being responsible for people's problems," Singh said in his video statement.
The former prime minister also referred to the security lapse of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s convoy being stuck on a flyover in Ferozepur last month.
"A few days ago, in the name of the prime minister's security, an attempt was made to defame Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and the people of the state," he said.       "During the farmers’ agitation too, an attempt was made to defame Punjab and Punjabiyat," he said.
     The world salutes the bravery, patriotism and sacrifice of Punjabis, but the NDA government did not talk about any of this, Singh said.
“As a true Indian hailing from Punjab, all these things deeply hurt me,” he added.
Singh said there are many challenges before the people of Punjab and it is very important to deal with them effectively.
It is very important to address the issues of Punjab's development, its farming and unemployment, he said.
“And this work can only be done by the Congress,” he said as he appealed to the people of Punjab to vote for the Congress.
The Congress leader said he had worked as prime minister for 10 years and had always preferred that his work should speak for itself.
"We never divided the country for political gains. We never tried to put curtains on the truth. Never allowed the country’s prestige to be lowered," he said.
At the international level, prestige of India and Indians was enhanced, he said, while adding that the country remembers the good work done during the Congress-led UPA rule.

Noting that it was a serious issue and the budget for freebies goes beyond the regular budget, a bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana and Justices AS Bopanna and Hima Kohli observed that ‘even though it is not a corrupt practice but it creates a uneven playing field’.

Hitting back at Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, Punjab Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu joined the protest of Delhi government guest teachers outside Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's residence on Sunday.
As per a report by India Today, the teachers were protesting over demands for permanent jobs.

When asked whether he would enter politics, Sood said he has not thought about it.
"It is a very big decision in life. I think Malvika is strongly rooted in Moga… For me (joining politics), I have not thought of it," he said.
Asked about his recent meetings with Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, Sood said both of them are good people.
On SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, Sood said he would meet him too, adding that Badal has vast experience in politics.
About the ongoing farmers' protest, the actor said it was necessary that the farmers get their rights, asserting that their issues should be resolved so that they can return to their fields.
"What we are eating is because of them. It is important they should be happy," he said.
He also emphasized on improving the healthcare system in the state.
"There are several dispensaries in villages in Punjab where nobody is there (for patients). Sometimes in government hospitals, doctors and medicines were not available. These things should be set right," Sood said.
To a question on income tax raids on his premises in September, he said he had faced many difficulties in the past but he continued his fight for the people.
Replying to another query, Sood said unemployment was the biggest issue in Punjab.
"The biggest problem of Punjab is unemployment, and when people do not get jobs, they take to drugs. We are already working on it," he said.
He stressed that the IT industry should be promoted in the state in a big way for generating employment opportunities.
Sood also announced a dialysis service for needy patients free of charge.
Later talking to reporters, Malvika said she had been working towards addressing issues related to healthcare and education.
The Punjab assembly polls are due early next year.
Sood grabbed the national spotlight for helping migrants reach their home states during the nationwide lockdown clamped last year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Asked about joining any political party, Sood said no decision has yet been taken in this regard.
"We have not yet taken a call about the party. Whenever the time comes, we will make sure that we let you know," he said.
When asked whether he would enter politics, Sood said he has not thought about it.
"It is a very big decision in life. I think Malvika is strongly rooted in Moga&hellip; For me (joining politics), I have not thought of it," he said.
Asked about his recent meetings with Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and his Delhi counterpart Arvind Kejriwal, Sood said both of them are good people.
On SAD chief Sukhbir Singh Badal, Sood said he would meet him too, adding that Badal has vast experience in politics.
About the ongoing farmers' protest, the actor said it was necessary that the farmers get their rights, asserting that their issues should be resolved so that they can return to their fields.
"What we are eating is because of them. It is important they should be happy," he said.
He also emphasized on improving the healthcare system in the state.
"There are several dispensaries in villages in Punjab where nobody is there (for patients). Sometimes in government hospitals, doctors and medicines were not available. These things should be set right," Sood said.
To a question on income tax raids on his premises in September, he said he had faced many difficulties in the past but he continued his fight for the people. Replying to another query, Sood said unemployment was the biggest issue in Punjab.
"The biggest problem of Punjab is unemployment, and when people do not get jobs, they take to drugs. We are already working on it," he said.
He stressed that the IT industry should be promoted in the state in a big way for generating employment opportunities.
Sood also announced a dialysis service for needy patients free of charge. Later talking to reporters, Malvika said she had been working towards addressing issues related to healthcare and education.
The Punjab assembly polls are due early next year.&nbsp;Sood grabbed the national spotlight for helping migrants reach their home states during the nationwide lockdown clamped last year in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
