Nupur Sharma, former BJP spokesperson who kicked up a storm for her controvesial remarks on Prophet has been granted personal gun licence.
Sharma, according to the Delhi Police had applied for the license amid constant death threat over her comments. Sharma was suspended last year after a massive row erupted when she made a derogatory comment about the Prophet on a television channel debate in 2022. The saffron party later suspended the her.
Violent outrage was witnessed in several parts of India demanding action against Nupur Sharma. Notably, the Supreme Court of India in July had directed Sharma to apologise for irresponsible behaviour.&nbsp;

BJP leader Raja Singh was arrested here on Tuesday for his alleged controversial remarks against a particular religion.
On Monday, the BJP MLA released a video criticising stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui, who recently performed in the city. Singh is also purportedly seen making some comments against the religion in it.
Several people belonging to community staged protests in various parts of the city on Monday night demanding Singh's arrest.
Many All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) legislators and corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation reached the police stations, where protests were held and sought stringent action against Raja Singh, party sources said.
According to police, complaints were filed against Singh in several police stations under South, East and West Zones.
Dabeerpur Police Inspector G Koteswar Raos said they received a complaint against Singh, which alleged that the BJP MLA made derogatory remarks against a religion.
An FIR was booked against Singh under various sections of IPC pertaining to promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs and criminal intimidation among others, he said.
During the arrest, the Goshamahal MLA told reporters that his video was pulled down by the social media platform on which it was uploaded and that he will upload “part 2” of the clip after his release.
“They removed my video from YouTube. I don’t know what the police are going to do. Once I am released second part (of the video) will certainly be uploaded. I am doing it for Dharma. I am ready to die for dharma,” he said.
Singh sought to know why several complaints were lodged against him in various police stations.
“Why there are complaints? Our Ram is not Ram? Our Sita is Sita? I requested the DGP with folded hands not to allow the person (Munawar Faruqui) who made comedy with vulgar language against Ram and Sita,” he said.
On August 19, Raja Singh was taken into custody by the police here when he tried to reach the venue of a show held to be held next day by stand-up comedian Munawar Faruqui.
Faruqui performed the show on that day even as the police picked up 50 people who tried to reach the venue and protest.

Singh sought to know why several complaints were lodged against him in various police stations.

In a tweet, Owaisi said the police picked up 90 people from the Shah Ali Banda area on Wednesday and on his representation they were released.
"This situation is a direct result of Raja Singh’s hate speech. He must be sent to jail at the earliest. I also reiterate my appeal to maintain peace. #Hyderabad is our home, it should not fall prey to communalism," Owaisi tweeted.
He further said AIMIM MLA Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala and the party's corporators of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation have been working all night to de-escalate the situation.
Some of the sensitive areas of the city have witnessed sporadic incidents protests against Raja Singh who was arrested on August 23 for allegedly making remarks against Islam and Prophet Mohammed in a video, which was later pulled down by the social media platform on which it was uploaded. Later, he was granted bail by a local court.
Following his release by the court, protests erupted in some parts of the city that went on till Wednesday afternoon.
"On my representation to DCP South, 90 protesting youth from Shah Ali Banda & Asha Talkies have been released. AIMIM MLA Ahmed bin Abdullah Balala & our corporators have been working all night to de-escalate the situation. I have been in touch with them & police too #Hyderabad," he said in another tweet.
According to him in one case, police had used disproportionate force and barged into a home and detained five youths.
"This isn't acceptable. They've been released on my representation. I asked our corporators to drop the youths back home," he said in the tweet.

 The Supreme Court Tuesday granted suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma protection from coercive action in connection with FIRs/complaints filed against her in several states over her remarks on the Prophet made during a TV debate show.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and J B Pardiwala, while taking note of the alleged threats to life extended to Sharma after its July 1 order, also protected her from coercive action in the FIRs/complaints which may be registered or entertained in the future about the May 26 telecast.
Observing that it never wanted Sharma to visit every court for relief, the bench issued notices to the Centre and several states including Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra on her plea and sought their responses by August 10.
The bench posted the matter for hearing on August 10.

A security assessment exercise that involves setting planting and dummy Improvised Explosive Devices in areas with high footfall of people is underway in the national capital New Delhi.   The Indian Express reported that the exercise is being done to check preparedness of police department in light of a warning by Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent that it would orchestrate suicide bombings in Delhi, Mumbai, Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat over comments on the Prophet made by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma. The Delhi Police Special Cell “infiltrated and planted” 30 dummy IEDs in places with high footfall since June of which only 12 were detected — by the public, private security guards and local police. The first batch of 15 dummy IEDs was planted on June 12 across Delhi’s districts, and 10 of them were detected. Of the 10, two were detected.  A police officer told the newspaper that another batch of 15 dummy IEDs was planted on June 28, but this time 13 couldn’t be detected.  The Delhi Police will continue to hold the exercise.

"In the annals of judiciary, the unfortunate comments have no parallel and are indelible scar on justice system of the largest democracy. Urgent rectification steps are called for as these have potentially serious consequences on democratic values and security of the country," the statement signed by 15 former judges, 77 ex-all India services officers and 25 veterans said.  
The signatories include former chief justice of the Bombay High Court Kshitij Vyas, former Gujarat High Court judge S M Soni, former Rajasthan High Court judges R S Rathore and Prashant Agarwal and former Delhi High Court judge S N Dhingra.  Former IAS officers R S Gopalan and S Krishna Kumar, ambassador (retired) Niranjan Desai, former DGPs S P Vaid and B L Vohra, Lt Gen V K Chaturvedi (retired) and Air Marshall (retired) S P Singh have also signed the statement which said the SC observations are not in sync with judicial ethos.  
"By no stretch these observations, which are not part of the judicial order, can be sanctified on the plank of judicial propriety and fairness. Such outrageous transgressions are without parallel in the annals of Judiciary," it said.  
The Supreme Court had on July 1 come down heavily on Sharma for her controversial comments against Prophet Mohammad, saying her "loose tongue" has "set the entire country on fire" and that she is "single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country".
Refusing to entertain her plea for clubbing of FIRs lodged in various states against her for the remark, the bench held that the comment was made either for cheap publicity, political agenda or some nefarious activities.
Criticising the observations, the statement said, "We, as concerned citizens, do believe that democracy of any country will remain intact till all the institutions perform their duties as per the constitution. Recent comments by the two judges of the Supreme Court have surpassed the Laxman Rekha and compelled us to issue an open statement."
These "unfortunate and unprecedented" comments have sent shockwaves in the country and outside, it claimed.  Noting that Sharma sought access to justice system before the highest court, the statement said the court's observations have no connect jurisprudentially with the issue raised in the petition and "transgressed in an unprecedented manner all canons of dispensation of justice".
"She was defacto denied access to judiciary and in the process, there was an outrage on the preamble, spirit and essence of the Constitution of India," it alleged. In the observations, there is virtual exoneration of the "dastardliest beheading at Udaipur in broad daylight," it claimed.  It further said, "Legal fraternity is bound to be surprised and shocked at the observation that an FIR should lead to arrest. The observations on other agencies in the country, without notice to them, are indeed worrisome and alarming."
The signatories also defended Sharma's plea for clubbing all FIRs against her citing previous orders of the apex court.  "One fails to understand, why Nupur's case is treated at a different pedestal. Such an approach of the Supreme Court deserves no applause and impacts the very sanctity and honour of the highest court of land," it said.  
Sharma's comments against the Prophet during a TV debate had triggered protests across the country and drew sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP subsequently suspended her from the party.
The apex court had also pulled up the Delhi Police which has registered an FIR against her. The bench said, "What has happened in the investigation so far? What has Delhi Police done so far? Don't make us open our mouth? They must have put a red carpet for you."

The Congress on Friday said the Supreme Court has rightly called out suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for being "single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country" with her remark against the Prophet, and that the ruling party should hang its head in shame.
In a statement after the Supreme Court's observations against Sharma, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the court has strengthened the party's resolve to fight "destructively divisive ideologies".
"The court has very rightly called out the BJP spokesperson for being 'single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country', and that she should apologise to the entire nation," Ramesh said.
"These remarks by the Supreme Court, which resonate with the entire country, should make the party in power hang its head in shame," he also said.
The Supreme Court slammed Sharma for her "disturbing" remark against Prophet Mohammad and said it led to unfortunate incidents and ignited emotions across the country.
Sharma's remark against the Prophet, made during the course of a TV debate, triggered protests across the country and invited sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP had subsequently suspended her from the party.
Ramesh said the Supreme Court has held a mirror to this government and called out the "base ugliness" of its actions.

The Congress on Friday said the Supreme Court has rightly called out suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma for being "single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country" with her remark against the Prophet, and that the ruling party should hang its head in shame.
In a statement after the Supreme Court's observations against Sharma, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh said the court has strengthened the party's resolve to fight "destructively divisive ideologies".
"The court has very rightly called out the BJP spokesperson for being 'single-handedly responsible for igniting emotions across the country', and that she should apologise to the entire nation," Ramesh said.
"These remarks by the Supreme Court, which resonate with the entire country, should make the party in power hang its head in shame," he also said.
The Supreme Court slammed Sharma for her "disturbing" remark against Prophet Mohammad and said it led to unfortunate incidents and ignited emotions across the country.
Sharma's remark against the Prophet, made during the course of a TV debate, triggered protests across the country and invited sharp reactions from many Gulf countries. The BJP had subsequently suspended her from the party.
Ramesh said the Supreme Court has held a mirror to this government and called out the "base ugliness" of its actions.

Chief of AIMIM (All-India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen) Asaduddin Owaisi has demanded that suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma be arrested for her controversial remarks on prophet Mohammad, and said she would be projected as a "big leader" and it is also possible she may also be made the Delhi Chief Ministerial candidate in the coming months.
"BJP is protecting Nupur Sharma. We are demanding the BJP and the Prime Minister (Narendra Modi), but he doesn't speak. We tell the Prime Minister to arrest her. We demand action against her and her arrest as per law," the Hyderabad MP said, addressing a public meeting organised by United Action Forum here on Saturday.
He further said, "I know that after six-seven months Nupur Sharma will be projected as a very big leader. It is also possible that she will be made the Delhi Chief Minister candidate. This is the reality of our country. The more you abuse Muslims, higher the post you get." Owaisi said a complaint was given and an FIR was registered in Hyderabad against Nupur Sharma.
"We would like to tell our (Hyderabad) Police Commissioner and the Chief Minister of this State (Telangana) to send police to Delhi and bring "Mohtarma". Do something. What will happen only with an FIR? At least say that you will be going (to Delhi). You should bring her (Nupur Sharma)," Owaisi demanded.
Owaisi said if someone says anything against Prime Minister Modi, (Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister) Yogi Adityanath, (West Bengal Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee, it is immediate jail (one is arrested).
On the protests by youngsters against the Centre's ‘Agnipath’ scheme in several parts of the country, Owaisi said youngsters were protesting against the alleged wrong decision of Modi.

"We encourage India to promote respect for human rights. The Secretary (of State) said, when he was in New Delhi last year, that the Indian people and the American people believe in the same values: human dignity, human respect, equality of opportunity, and the freedom of religion or belief," Price said in response to a question.
These are fundamental tenets, he added.
"These are fundamental values within any democracy, and we speak up for them around the world," Price said.

Protests erupted in several parts of the country, including outside Delhi's Jama Masjid, on June 10 against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by now-sacked BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.
In Jharkhand, some policemen were injured in a bid to control demonstrators, while authorities in Jammu imposed a curfew in a few areas. In parts of Uttar Pradesh, protesters pelted stones at the police, prompting the force to baton-charge them and use tear gas shells.
"Against the growing extremist incidents by Islamic Jihadi fundamentalists in the country, the VHP's youth wing Bajrang Dal will now take to the streets," the saffron outfit's Secretary General Milind Parande said in a statement.
"Bajrang Dal activists will hold a sit-in across all district headquarters on Thursday against continuous attack on Hindus by the Jihadi fundamentalists and submit a memorandum to the President," he added.
Parande demanded that a strict vigil be kept at the mosques from where the mobs allegedly came out after Friday prayers and carried out violence in parts of the country on June 10.
"Those who instigated the mob should be arrested immediately and strict action be taken against them," Parande demanded, adding, "Security of those being threatened be ensured. Those threatening be arrested and criminal cases be filed against them." He demanded that authorities should also tighten the noose around Muslim outfits "like Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind, mosques and people of jihadi mindset who are source of food and inspiration for such rioters".

Khanna also urged managers and priests of temples to put up notices informing devotees to spread the information.
"It is absolutely necessary to showcase our strength in such a manner and constitutionally respond to the unethical pressure being built on the Hindu society," he said.
"To get rid of such kind of jihad, we must gather in our temples at least once a week," he said.

"Illegal fatwas were issued for the killing of Nupur Sharma... The Hindu society rejects and strongly condemns the pressure that was built on the Hindu society due to such illegal demonstrations," Delhi VHP chief Kapil Khanna said in the statement.
"To protest against this, I call upon the Hindu society of Delhi to assemble at small and big temples in the city and participate in mass recitation of Hanuman Chalisa at 8.00 pm tomorrow (June 14, 2022)," he added.
Khanna also urged managers and priests of temples to put up notices informing devotees about the mass recitation of Hanuman Chalisa.
"It is absolutely necessary to showcase our strength in such a manner and constitutionally respond to the unethical pressure being built on the Hindu society," he said.
"To get rid of such kind of jihad, we must gather in our temples at least once a week," he said.

The VHP's Delhi unit on Monday called on people in the city to assemble in temples and participate in mass recitations of Hanuman Chalisa on June 14 to register protest against the June 10 violence in parts of the country.
In a statement, the Vishva Hindu Parishad alleged violent demonstrations were held and stones pelted at temples and houses after prayers in mosques on June 10 as part of a well-planned conspiracy to defame India globally.
Protests erupted in several parts of the country, including outside Delhi's Jama Masjid, on June 10 against the controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad by now-sacked BJP functionaries Nupur Sharma and Naveen Jindal.

Tension prevailed in Jharkhand capital Ranchi on Sunday, as police strengthened security in sensitive areas and registered 25 FIRs against "thousands" of people in the aftermath of violent protests over controversial comments on Prophet Mohammad.
Internet services, however, were restored in the district after nearly 33 hours, Ranchi Deputy Commissioner Chhavi Ranjan said.
Around 3,500 security personnel are on guard at sensitive areas in Ranchi, where two people were killed and more than two dozen people critically injured, as protests and clashes rocked the city after the Friday prayers.
The protesters have been demanding the arrest of suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and expelled leader Naveen Jindal for their controversial remarks on Prophet Mohammad.
Ranchi Senior Superintendent of Police Surendra Kumar Jha said personnel of the Rapid Action Force, anti-terrorism squad, special task force and district police have been deputed at strategic locations, including “38 identified vulnerable pockets”.
Fifty motorcycle patrol teams have also been pressed into service.
"Twenty-five FIRs have been registered against 22 named people, and thousands of unnamed people. No arrests have been made so far. Interrogation is underway based on inputs from intelligence, CID and social media," Jha said at a press conference here.
In reply to queries regarding police firing, he said there are certain standard operating procedures to deal with such situations, which were adhered to.
"Firing is the last resort. We followed all norms before resorting to firing, as the crowd was aggressive and uncontrollable. I don't want to talk much on this as the matter is under investigation," Jha said.
Ranjan said prohibitory orders under Section 144 have been lifted from six of the 12 police station areas.
Restrictions on movement of five or more persons continue in Kotwali, Lower Bazar, Chutia, Daily Market, Doranda and Hindipiri stations, but people have been allowed to purchase daily essentials while adhering to the provisions, he said.
Security in other parts of Jharkhand has also been beefed up, as per reports from districts.
Md Haji Hasim, the president of Daily Market Traders Association, told PTI that nearly 1,100 shops are shut.
Meanwhile, internet services in Ranchi district, which were suspended from 7 pm on Friday as a precautionary measure, resumed after 33 hours.
The internet services were restored at 4 am on Sunday, Ranjan said.
Police had on Saturday said 12 of its personnel and an equal number of civilians were injured in the protests that turned violent.
Eyewitnesses, however, have claimed the number could be over 60.
A RIMS official told PTI that eight injured people undergoing treatment at the medical facility are critical, with one Nadeem Ansari, 24, still on a ventilator and battling for life.

For the second day in a row, bulldozers have been put to work in Uttar Pradesh. After demolitions were undertaken in Saharanpur and Kanpur on Saturday, authorities are busy razing houses on Sunday in Prayagraj. 
The bulldozers, accompanied by a large number of police personnel, reportedly demolished the home of a politician accused of leading the violence on Friday. 
The bulldozers brought down the gates and outer walls of Javed Mohammed, a Prayagraj-based politician. 
Reports say the demolition came just hours after a notice was put up outside his residence claiming illegal construction on the ground and first floor of the property. Javed had been asked to raze the illegal construction by June 9, failing which another notice was sent to vacate the house by 11 am on June 12.

One day after violent clashes erupted across different cities of Uttar Pradesh over the controversial remarks of now-sacked BJP functionaries on Prophet Mohammad, Saharanpur police took action against the accused. 
The police on Saturday reached the residences of two accused along with a team of the local civic body to raze parts of their house claiming illegal constructions. 
The action was taken by a joint team of Saharanpur administration including development authority, magistracy, revenue team, municipal corporation and police on 'illegal properties of accused in yesterday's incident, Saharanpur SSP Akash Tomar told news agency ANI.
He added that 64 people have been arrested and more than 200 identified in connection with the clashes.
Uttar Pradesh police arrested 237 people from various districts in the state in connection with Friday's violence with Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath warning of "strictest" action against those attempting to vitiate the atmosphere.

A week after the city witnessed chaotic protests marred by stone-pelting, the Kanpur Development Authority (KDA) on Saturday demolished a high-rise building owned by a close aide of the main accused in the incident, police here said.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Law and order) Anand Prakash Tiwari said that the KDA has demolished a newly-constructed building owned by one Mohammad Ishtiyaq, who is said to be a close relative of prime accused Zafar Hayat Hashmi.
The building was in Swaroopnagar locality of Kanpur.
“There are reasons to believe that the investment has been made by the prime accused of the violence case,” Tiwari said, and claimed that the demolition was carried out in accordance with “norms and regulations.” A local court had on Friday approved 72 hours’ police remand of Hashmi along with Jawed Ahmad Khan, Mohammad Rahil, and Sufiyan. "The accused were taken into police custody following the court's order on Saturday morning and will remain in custody till Tuesday morning," said Tiwari.
Violence broke out in Kanpur on June 3 after some people gathered demanding strict action against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her comments on Prophet Mohammad. Sharma's remark riled many Arab nations and stoked like protests across parts of north India, and West Bengal.
