The North Eastern Hill University (NEHU) has suspended senior faculty Professor Nirmalendu Saha following his arrest by the CBI in connection with a Rs 3.43 lakh bribery case, officials said on Friday.
Professor Saha, who heads the department of zoology and also serves as the dean of the school of life sciences, was arrested on June 12 along with the proprietor of a private firm during a bribery transaction conducted at the university&rsquo;s guest house in Guwahati.
"After receiving the communication from the CBI, the university suspended Saha in accordance with the rules," a senior university official told PTI.
The official added that the suspension order was delayed because the university was waiting for formal intimation from the central agency.
"We could not act earlier as we required the official documentation from the CBI," he explained.
The CBI had registered a First Information Report (FIR) on June 11 against Saha and the supplier of laboratory equipment, identified as Pranjal Sharma.

A 55-year-old assistant professor was arrested for allegedly molesting 12 students at the Government Degree College in Roorkee, the police said Friday.
According to the complaint filed by a victim, Dr Abdul Alim Ansari allegedly touched the students inappropriately during the viva of the B.Sc practical examinations on Thursday afternoon, the police said, adding that the incident occurred in a closed room.
Ansari also allegedly wrote his mobile number on the palm of a student, asking her to call him at night after returning home, Gang Nahar police station inspector in-charge RK Saklani said.
When a victim shared what she went through after coming out of the room, the other students revealed how they had also been touched inappropriately by the professor.
After being confronted by the students, Ansari allegedly threatened to cut their marks.
As the matter came to light, the students protested demanding stern action against the professor, who also teaches at another college in Bhagwanpur near Roorkee.
Following the protests, the college management called the police to pacify the angry students.
A complaint was filed by one of the victims following which Ansari was arrested, Saklani said.
During interrogation, Ansari admitted that he had touched the girls, however, he said that he had no bad intentions behind his act. When asked if he wrote his mobile number on a student's palm, he could not give a satisfactory answer, the police said.
Meanwhile, the two practical examinations conducted by Ansari on Wednesday and Thursday have been cancelled, college authorities informed.

Its key finding has been that the disease is likely to have peaked in the middle of September, and the total number of infections in India is unlikely to exceed 10.6 million. So far, 75 lakh people in India have been infected, of which nearly 66 lakh have recovered.&nbsp;The committee claimed that the lockdown imposed in March has had a powerful impact on slowing down the spread of the disease in the country. In the absence of the lockdown, the death count would have gone up to 25 lakh, it said. As of now, 1.14 lakh people have died in India because of the disease.

If you've been feeling a notch gloomier than you've ever felt before, you're not alone.
A recently released India-specific happiness&nbsp;study has found that we, as a nation, are sadder than we've ever been.
The report, released by MDI&nbsp;Gurgaon's&nbsp;Professor Rajesh K Pillania, ranks all 36 states and Union Territories on the basis of their happiness quotient. According to Pillania's&nbsp;findings,&nbsp;Maharashtra, Delhi and Haryana&nbsp;are the worst affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, with Mizoram and Punjab reporting the jolliest mood.
Echoing a similar sentiment, a global happiness report released in February revealed that India&nbsp;dropped 15 points in the index ranking of global countries in just one year.
The same report also noted that India is one of the five countries facing the steepest decline in happiness since the year 2013.
While none of the reports establishes the key contributor in this decline, a mixture of pandemic anxiety, dwindling job&nbsp;security and over exhaustion from an increase in workload could be some of the factors to blame.
