Published in the&nbsp;European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, the study suggests a possible link between cardiovascular and maternal health.&nbsp;The research team assessed data from over 18,000,000 pregnancies&nbsp;for women aged between 15 and 44 years, taking into account cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, self-reported smoking, and being either underweight or overweight.
The team found that the risk factors contributed to a higher chance of complications like&nbsp;pre-term birth, low birth weight, and&nbsp;fetal&nbsp;death.&nbsp;&nbsp;
With every additional cardiovascular risk factor, the research team observed&nbsp;there was a graded and consistently higher risk for each of the pregnancy complications.&nbsp;Making matters worse,&nbsp;more than 50% of the women studied were found to be living with at least one of the risk factors and younger women had a tendency to be unaware of their own cardiovascular disease risk.&nbsp;

Researchers in the US have found associations between drinking alcohol and the chances of becoming <a href="https://www.editorji.com/story/pregnant-women-can-now-take-covid-vaccine-can-register-on-cowin-or-opt-for-walk-in-1625242661159" target="_blank">pregnant</a>. Publishing in&nbsp;Human Reproduction, the study claims that&nbsp;alcohol intake and fecundability, which is defined as the probability of conceiving during a single menstrual cycle are closely linked.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Assessing self-reported data from&nbsp;313&nbsp;women collected over 19 menstrual cycles, the team found that heavy&nbsp;and moderate&nbsp;alcohol consumption&nbsp;during any phase of the cycle was substantially linked to a reduced probability of conception compared to non-drinkers.&nbsp;Heavy drinking&nbsp;during the ovulatory part of the cycle&nbsp;reduced the odds of pregnancy by&nbsp;as much as&nbsp;61&nbsp;per cent.&nbsp;
For the purpose of this research, heavy drinking was defined as more than six alcoholic drinks a week, while moderate drinking was measured as three to six drinks in a week.&nbsp;
The researchers cautioned that the findings must not be misconstrued to&nbsp;look at alcohol as a birth control option. Drinking heavily or not,&nbsp;if someone has unprotected intercourse, pregnancy is always a&nbsp;possibility.

Researchers used fetal MRI to study 33 patients with COVID-19 infection during pregnancy. The patients were roughly 28 weeks into their pregnancies, with symptom onset occurring at 18 weeks into the pregnancy. The most common symptoms were loss or a reduced sense of smell and taste, dry cough, fever and shortness of breath.
Two board-certified radiologists with several years of experience in fetal MRI evaluated the scans. They found that the brain development in the assessed areas was age-appropriate in all fetuses. There were no findings indicative of infection of the fetal brain.
There was no evidence that a maternal COVID infection has any effect on the brain development of the unborn child. However, active protection against SARS-CoV-2 infection during pregnancy remains important.

If a mother is obese or overweight, the child born from such a pregnancy has a greater risk of developing fatty liver disease in their 20s, finds a new study.&nbsp;&nbsp;
Researchers from Europe have&nbsp;found evidence&nbsp;showing how&nbsp;conditions in the womb may play a major role in the risk of developing the condition.&nbsp;Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (or NAFLD) can be&nbsp;caused by obesity and later turn into more critical health problems like liver cancer. NAFLD&nbsp;has&nbsp;also&nbsp;been&nbsp;linked to a higher&nbsp;susceptibility&nbsp;to developing&nbsp;type 2 diabetes and heart disease.&nbsp;&nbsp;
The team will be presenting their findings at the International Liver Congress 2021 convened by the European Association for the Study of the Liver.&nbsp;The same study, which assessed&nbsp;liver scans from 2,961 England-born participants, also discovered&nbsp;an increased risk associated with obese fathers but the increase was much smaller than for overweight mums.&nbsp;

Researchers from Oxford University have published&nbsp;for the first time, detailed comparative information about the effects of Covid-19 in pregnancy.
Based on&nbsp;findings of the INTERCOVID Study, the team concluded that&nbsp;the risk to mothers and babies is far greater than acknowledged at the beginning of the pandemic.&nbsp;
It was found that women with COVID-19 during pregnancy were over 50% more likely to experience pregnancy complications (such as premature birth, pre-eclampsia, admission to intensive care and death) compared to pregnant women unaffected by the virus.
Secondly, the babies birthed by infected mothers were&nbsp;also nearly three times more at risk of severe medical complications, mostly due to premature birth, noted the researchers.&nbsp;
However, breastfeeding does not seem to heighten the risk of babies contracting Covid-19 from their mothers, scientists said.
Published in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, the study assessed over 2,100 pregnant women across 18 countries.&nbsp;
At the same time, a separate study from Harvard Medical School, reveals that even mother-to-newborn transmission of coronavirus is rare, newborns of infected mums can still suffer indirect adverse health risks, usually prompted by the mother's worsening&nbsp;illness due to the disease.&nbsp;

But in some good news, new evidence from the US on&nbsp;Covid-19 vaccination finds that&nbsp;Pfizer&rsquo;s and&nbsp;Moderna&rsquo;s jabs were safe for the women as well as their babies.&nbsp;The researchers found no &ldquo;obvious safety signals&rdquo; among any of the more than 35,000 women&nbsp;who were followed in the peer-reviewed study.&nbsp;
