Catholic leader

Head of State

The pope has his own diplomats but often meets world leaders at the Vatican, in what are known as private audiences.
Moral guide 
The pope has influence well beyond the world's Catholics, as a pre-eminent moral voice on the global stage.
Many non-Catholic leaders seek an audience at the Vatican, while his pronouncements often carry more weight than those of many elected politicians.
The Vatican has a non-member observer status at the United Nations and is often called in as a neutral party in conflict zones.
Doctrine and Teaching Through his homilies and written texts, Pope Francis provided guidance on everything from daily life -- for example, urging against gossip -- to weighty doctrinal issues.
He published several encyclicals, open letters written by the pope to the Church worldwide, covering subjects such as social friendship or climate change.
Other formal texts include apostolic exhortations, which are teaching documents, and the motu proprio, which means "by his own motion" and is a legal change delivered on the pope's initiative.
During his time as pope, Francis paved the way for the blessing of same-sex couples, restricted the use of the Latin Mass and took measures to combat sexual abuse of children by clergy, among other things.
Appointments The pope approves the appointment of bishops, the approximately 3,000 clergy who lead Catholic dioceses around the world, and also cardinals.
Cardinals, sometimes known as princes of the church, are the most senior clergy and those under the age of 80 can vote in the election of a new pope.
The pope also has the final say in elevating individuals to become "blessed" or a "saint", following an investigation conducted on the grounds of miracles and virtues.
He has the power to convene Synods -- worldwide gatherings that Francis opened to lay people for the first time -- to discuss specific issues.
Travel
The pope travels to connect with the faithful around the world. John Paul II conducted the most apostolic voyages, counting 104 visits abroad in 26 years as pope.
Francis followed with 47, using the visits to shine a spotlight on marginalised communities or issues he wanted to highlight, such as migration or inter-religious dialogue.
Bishop of Rome As Bishop of Rome, the pope is responsible for administering his diocese. The constraints on his time mean that this is in fact delegated to a Vicar General.
The pope, however, takes part in local events, regularly visiting churches in Rome for celebrations or other symbolic sites in the city.

One of the main characters in the documentary is Juan Carlos Cruz, the Chilean survivor of clergy sexual abuse whom Francis initially discredited during a 2018 visit to Chile.
Cruz, who is gay, said that during his first meetings with the pope in May 2018, Francis assured him that God made Cruz gay.
Cruz tells his own story in snippets throughout the film, chronicling both Francis' evolution on understanding sexual abuse as well as to document the pope's views on gay people.
Director Evgeny Afineevsky had remarkable access to cardinals, the Vatican television archives and the pope himself.
He said he negotiated his way in through persistence, and deliveries of Argentine mate tea and Alfajores cookies that he got to the pope via some well-connected Argentines in Rome.
&ldquo;Listen, when you are in the Vatican, the only way to achieve something is to break the rule and then to say, 'I'm sorry,'&rdquo; Afineevsky said in an interview ahead of the premiere.
The director worked official and unofficial channels starting in early 2018, and ended up so close to Francis by the end of the project that he showed the pope the movie on his iPad in August. The two recently exchanged Yom Kippur greetings; Afineevsky is a Russian-born Jew who lives in Los Angeles.
But &ldquo;Francesco&rdquo; is more than a biopic about the pope.
Wim Wenders did that in the 2018 film &ldquo;Pope Francis: A Man of His Word,&rdquo; which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. &ldquo;Francesco,&rdquo; is more a visual survey of the world's crises and tragedies, with audio from the pope providing possible ways to solve them.
Afineevsky traveled the world to film it: the settings include Cox's Bazaar in Bangladesh where Myanmar's Rohingya sought refuge; the U.S.-Mexico border and Francis' native Argentina.
&ldquo;The film tells the story of the pope by reversing the cameras,&rdquo; said Vatican communications director Paolo Ruffini, who was one of Afineevsky's closest Vatican-based collaborators on the film.
Ruffini said that when Afineevsky first approached him with the idea of a documentary, he tried to tamp down his hopes for interviewing the pope.
&ldquo;I told him it wasn't going to be easy,&rdquo; he said.
But Ruffini gave him some advice: names of people who had been impacted by the pope, even after just a brief meeting. Afineevsky found them: the refugees Francis met with on some of his foreign trips, prisoners he blessed, and some of the gays to whom he has ministered.
&ldquo;I told him that many of those encounters had certainly been filmed by the Vatican cameras, and that there he would find a veritable gold mine of stories that told a story," Ruffini said. &ldquo;He would be able to tell story of the pope through the eyes of all and not just his own.&rdquo;
