Two suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed when army troops scuttled an infiltration attempt along the Line of Control in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, officials said on Wednesday.
The latest encounter comes two days after security forces eliminated three hardcore terrorists, involved in the Pahalgam terror attack, in a forest in Srinagar.
Codenamed operation 'Shivshakti", the army said the two terrorists neutralised in Poonch during the intervening night were attempting to infiltrate into this side from across the border.
"In a successful anti-infiltration operation, alert troops of the Indian Army eliminated two terrorists attempting to infiltrate across the Line of Control. Swift action and accurate firepower thwarted the nefarious designs. Three weapons have been recovered," Army's Jammu-based White Knight Corps said in a post on X.
The army said synergistic and synchronised intelligence inputs from own intelligence units and J-K Police led to a successful operation which is still in progress. Earlier in another post, the army said suspected movement of two individuals was observed by Indian troops along the fence in general area of Poonch sector, leading to a the gunfight. Officials said troops on ambush duty, following information about possible attempt by Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists to sneak into this side, saw the movement of infiltrating terrorists in Maldivalanarea of Degwar sector late Tuesday night.
The terrorists opened fire and in the ensuing encounter lasting for several hours, two terrorists were hit and fell down.
A search operation was launched with the first light of the day and both the terrorists were confirmed dead in the encounter, they said.

Accompanied by his advisor Nasir Aslam Wani and MLA Ajaz Jan, Abdullah visited Poonch to assess the regions most impacted by the shelling. He met with families who lost loved ones, including those of Amarjeet Singh and Amrik Singh, and expressed his condolences.
During his visit, locals briefed the Chief Minister about the challenging conditions they face. Abdullah's primary aim was to offer support and comfort to the grieving families, according to his team.
In the Surankote area, Abdullah interacted with residents relocated to safer places due to the shelling. He received updates from Minister Javed Rana on the administrative measures underway.
The Chief Minister highlighted the critical need for bunker construction to bolster the safety of border residents. He also plans to visit Rajouri to further assess the situation.
In a positive development, the night passed peacefully in Jammu and Kashmir, with no reports of cross-border firing&mdash;the first such occurrence in recent days. This calm follows an agreement between New Delhi and Islamabad on Saturday to immediately cease military actions, after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

Authorities in Jammu and Kashmir's Poonch on Thursday disbursed immediate relief and ex-gratia assistance from the district Red Cross fund to individuals and their families affected by Pakistani shelling, an official spokesperson said.
Thirteen people, including four children and two women, were killed and more than 40 injured in intense Pakistani shelling in Poonch district after Indian armed forces carried out missile strikes on terror infrastructure across the border on Wednesday.
An ex-gratia amount of Rs 6 lakh each has been provided to the next of kin of the deceased, Rs 50,000 to those who sustained serious injuries and Rs 20,000 to individuals with minor injuries, the spokesperson said.
He said the relief has been extended in accordance with established norms to ensure timely support to the victims.
Poonch Deputy Commissioner Vikas Kundal reaffirmed the administration's commitment to public welfare and said all necessary assistance will continue for those affected.
The district administration is actively monitoring the situation and taking all measures to safeguard the wellbeing of the residents, he said.
Kundal also visited the district hospital to inquire about those injured in the shelling and admitted to the facility.
During his visit, the deputy commissioner interacted with the injured and expressed his heartfelt solidarity with the bereaved family members.
He assured them of comprehensive support and assistance from the administration amid this challenging time.
In a directive to the medical staff, Kundal emphasised the importance of providing the best possible treatment to the injured.
He also visited the blood bank to review the availability of blood and directed the staff there to ensure an adequate and uninterrupted supply to meet any emergency needs.
Later, the deputy commissioner visited the Government Polytechnic College Sathra, one of the nine designated shelter camps for the border residents of Mandi tehsil.
All necessary facilities, including food, power, water and sanitation, have been made available at the shelter camps, he said.
The deputy commissioner also convened a meeting to review the status of essential services and initiate measures to expedite the restoration of critical supply chains across this border district.
He directed the jal shakti and power development departments to ensure the restoration of water and electricity supplies within two hours in all affected areas, while the consumer affairs and public distribution department was asked to take immediate measures to ensure adequate and uninterrupted supply of ration, particularly in areas along the Line of Control (LoC).
The district administration is closely monitoring the situation and remains committed to ensuring the safety and welfare of all citizens, Kundal said.

The blast was reported in a lane adjacent to a religious place in the vicinity of the district hospital in Poonch town around 11.15 pm, causing panic among the locals, they said.
Police and army personnel along with forensic experts rushed to the scene to investigate the nature of the blast, officials said, adding preliminary probe suggests that the blast occurred after suspected terrorists hurled a Chinese grenade.
They said the whole area has been cordoned off and senior officers are on the spot.

Suspected terrorists fired upon a convoy of vehicles carrying security personnel in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday evening, prompting security forces to launch a search operation, officials said.
No security personnel was injured in the attack, they said.
"At around 1800h today, a Security Forces convoy of vehicles was fired upon by suspected terrorists from a jungle near Krishna Ghati, Poonch sector. No casualties to own troops. Joint search operations by Indian Army and JKP (Jammu and Kashmir Police) are in progress," the White Night Corps of the Army posted on X.
The vehicles that came under attack were carrying security personnel back to the camp, the officials said.
The incident came after a high-level security meeting chaired by Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi to chart out an anti-terror operation plan for the new year to foil design of terrorists in the region.
A similar ambush on Army vehicles took place in Poonch's Dhatya Morh in Dera Ki Gali area on December 21. Four Army personnel were killed in the attack.
Rajouri and Poonch districts, which were peaceful in the past, have witnessed targeted attacks by terrorists on the Army and civilians, they said.

Battling difficult terrains and dense forests, security forces continued to carry out cordon and search operations for the sixth consecutive day on Tuesday to track down the terrorists behind the ambush that left four soldiers dead in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Poonch last week, officials said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to visit ground zero on Wednesday with top Army and civilian officials monitoring the situation in Poonch in view of the terrorist attack which was followed by the death of three civilians in the area, official sources said.
Over 30 suspects have been questioned during the past few days and several of them have been released, they said.
"The cordon and search operation is going on to track down the terrorists involved in the ambush on Army vehicles," a senior official told PTI.
The official said that the operation includes sniffer dogs, surveillance equipment and aerial mechanisms. Additional forces have been deployed to plug seven infiltration routes amid area domination operations in the area, he said.
Operations are being carried out cautiously as there are dense forests, deep gorges and caves, official sources said.
Mobile internet services will remain suspended in Rajouri and Poonch for the fourth day in a row.
The defence minister is likely to visit the area on Wednesday and hold meetings with top commanders on the measures being taken to deal with the situation, they said.
His visit follows Chief of Army staff (CoAS) General Manoj Pande's visit to ground zero in Poonch on Monday where he reviewed the anti-terrorist operation under way in Surankote and nearby Rajouri district's Thanamandi forest belt.
General Pande asked security personnel to remain resolute and steadfast against all challenges.

The Chief of Army Staff (CoAS) also asked them to remain resolute and steadfast against all challenges.

The officials said General Pande visited Dhera Ki Gali and reviewed the anti-terrorist operation going on in Surankote and nearby Rajouri district's Thanamandi forest belt for the last five days to neutralise the terrorists behind the dastardly attack that left four soldiers dead.
The Army chief later flew to the 25 Infantry division headquarters in Rajouri and was briefed by the commanders on the ground about the overall security situation, they said.
Mobile Internet services remained suspended in both Poonch and Rajouri districts for the third day on Monday as a precautionary measure to check rumour-mongering and prevent miscreants from creating any law and order problem, the officials said.
The services were suspended early Saturday following the killing of the three civilians.
General Officer Commanding-in-chief, Northern Command, Lt Gen Upendra Dwivedi, General Officer Commanding of Jammu-based White Knight Corps, Lt Gen Sandeep Jain, and senior civil and police officers are camping in the twin districts of Rajouri and Poonch to supervise the anti-terrorist operation and maintain law and order.

Fourteen people including some school students were injured when an overcrowded cab they were travelling in skidded off the road and plunged into a gorge in Jammu and Kashmir&rsquo;s Poonch district on Sunday, officials said.
The accident happened near Keri Galhuta village of Mendhar around 10.30 am, they said.
The school students were on their way to appear in the board examination when the driver lost control of the vehicle, they said.
A rescue operation was immediately launched and the injured were shifted to a hospital.
Two girls -- Zahira and Rukhsana -- suffered serious injuries and were later referred to Government Medical College, Rajouri for specialised treatment, the officials said.
A case has been registered and further investigation is on, they said.

The DIG of Poonch-Rajouri Range Haseeb Mughal reportedly said that the terrorists would be eliminated soon. He also asked people to share information regarding suspicious movement or objects with security forces for quick action.
